Radio production has changed a lot since Ken Bruce began presenting in 1977. And yet, when it comes to the basics of good radio – a close, one-to-one relationship with the audience – things haven't changed much at all.“For years, people have been saying to me, ‘Radio's dead, dying. It's finished,'" said Bruce. "Even in the 70s, they were saying that to me. And I thought, well, no – I don't believe it is. Because there's a person there. It's a human interaction. And while that remains, radio will always have some kind of life.”Alongside Hits Radio presenter Fleur East, the Greatest Hits Radio presenter chatted with Bauer Media director of audio Gary Stein at The Future of Media London in October about the day-to-day challenges and excitements of producing a contemporary radio show. The pair reflected on the continued success of radio, even in an era marked by declines in audience for other traditional media channels. I remember sitting next to someone at a conference, eating lunch, making small talk. And it came up that his brand had no competition. And I said, ‘wow, what a dream position to be in.' I was used to working with a competitive sales office, hyper-focused on differentiating from competitors. You know, us vs. them.He said, ‘No, no, no. It's not a dream position, it's horrible. When you have competition, you know you're going to get into a set amount of RFPs or bakeoffs, and win a certain percentage of them. When you have competition there is a line item in the budget to choose some vendor, you'll get a certain percentage of those. We need to start from ground zero and tell them why they should even care about this category.'Which is why I loved a lesson I read in a recent podcast guest application – creativity matters for category of one. There are no questions around the popularity of BNPL. It has been hailed as the payments product of GenZ and Millennials, but use by all generations has flourished over the last year. The questions left around it are about whether it is a safe, smart, and fair credit product, or is it a path to bad credit? Is this going to lead to a giant consumer debt issue, or is it a healthy alternative lending product that allows families and those with minimal access to credit to stretch their budgets? We spoke with Gary Stein, Chief Product & Compliance Officer at Opy (and formerly with the CFPB) to bring some clarity to this, and one thing was clear. BNPL isn't going anywhere. During Justice Stein's tenure, the New Jersey Supreme Court handed down a series of far reaching decisions in the Abbott v. Burkelitigation; decisions which have significantly changed the shape of urban education in New Jersey for millions of our poorest students, and which laid the groundwork for the ongoing legal battles that continue today to promote equity and access to high quality education for all students, regardless of race, income level or zip code. Justice Stein takes us inside the debates that resulted in theAbbottdecisions, reflects on the legacy ofAbbott, and reviews the equity challenges that still need to be overcome.
In this episode, we sit down with Gary Stein, Chief Product & Compliance Officer at Opy to discuss what's fueling BNPL - this new category's growth, whether the data will be reported to the credit bureaus and what led this former regulator back to the private sector.Follow us on social media!youtube.com/vantagescorefb.com/vantagescoretwitter.com/vantagescorevantagescore.com/linkedininstagram.com/vantagescore

Although New Jersey is an extremely diverse state, segregation by race, ethnicity, and class in New Jersey’s public schools is among the worst in the United States. We sit down with former Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court the Honorable Gary Stein who helped coordinate this lawsuit and Bishop of the United Methodists of Greater New Jersey John Schol to ask what the lawsuit is and why desegregation of NJ schools matters.
