Atlantic Place has new tenants and a big renovation plan. Charlie Oliver, founder of Martek. joins us to chat about it.
Do you know how to anticipate the future and develop a mindful innovation? We may not be able to necessarily fix the fact that there are biases about the algorithms with the technologies. We don't know what's coming but we do know that we do need to develop the things that make us uniquely human that will help us to solve the problems that are coming as a result of the technology. In this episode, we interview Charlie Oliver, the founder, and CEO of tech 2025, a futurist organization that focuses on the innovations that are coming and their impact on business and society. She discusses how getting people on board early with regards to emerging technologies can help them capitalize on these opportunities when they arrive. Let's dive in! Key Highlights: [00:01 - 08:15] Opening Segment • Charlie shares her background and story • We need to be prepared for the future, and we shouldn't be afraid of AI • How we should be preparing for the future, and how technology will change our lives for the better [08:16 - 15:54] Our Intuition and Creativity Are Essential • How she met with Eric Schmidt and Mark Zuckerberg, and how his meeting with them changed her perspective • The way technology is being used, and how we need to be more mindful of our cognitive abilities to keep up • If we don't start investing in our intuition and creativity, we may lose them as technology advances [15:55 - 23:37] Is Technology Ruining Our Lives? • How technology has changed in the past few decades and how it will continue to change in the future • Entrepreneurs need to be aware of changes in technology and be ready for what is coming [23:38 - 31:10] Black Women Empowered by Startup • What Charlie decided to create to give voice to women across America after feeling that they were not being heard • Charlie shares her experience with her first startup and what happened during the recession in 2008 [31:11 - 38:49] Closing Segment • Why Charlie decided to follow her own path instead of subscribing to others' ideas Want to connect to Charlie? Charlie OliverIs a certified professional life coach, student of integral theory, mediator and meditator, poet with two self published works, trained in Reki, therapeutic touch…a lover of cycling, roller blading and he is a serial entrepreneur for 40 years. Charlie's philosophy is There is always a solution!! He leads by being part of the team. Charlie's entrepreneurial evolution started mid-year 1981. He crafted Martek to provide start-up solutions to young entrepreneurs, it strayed from this early course in its growth when confronted with identifying solutions to difficult real estate situations. It successfully established radical approaches to stagnant realty. Story after story prompted more creative undertakings to effect successful conclusions. Consulting led to management led to leasing led to sales. Under Charlie's leadership and team approach, through the times of challenging interest rates in the 80's, to the growth of the 90's and the market-tightening effects in this new century and now COVID, Martek continues to act with professionalism, patience, dedication as the market changes, and change it always does. As a diversified real estate creature, we simply thrive on change!!! Charlie's evolution from the early days of Martek, helping young entrepreneurs, has come full circle with him engaging in philanthropic endeavours around the globe, to just spending time with folks who need his ear right here in his own backyard. Folks we have a great episode for you today with Charlie discussing “critical Inflection points”, “wicked Problems and wicked solutions”, “balance in life”, “Chasing Risk”, “positive Action” and the list goes on but how about you listen for yourself…New episodes every Tuesday evening on Youtube or wherever you get your podcasts. You can also visit www.GaleForceWins.comTo message Gerry visit: www.linkedin.com/in/gerrycarew/To message Allan visit: www.linkedin.com/in/allanadale/
Part 2 of 4 interviews from our end-of-year event, The Pain and Triumphs of 2020: The Biggest Lessons We Learned This Year, where we asked guest speakers (several of our favorite people who have been part of the Tech 2025 community for years!) what their most profound lesson of 2020 was and how it changed their outlook on the future. They gave us much food for thought! In this episode, David Ryan Polgar (Tech Ethicist, Founder of All Tech is Human) explains how this past year has shown him things about building communities (which he specializes in) that we will continue to grapple with as we work remotely more post-pandemic. David is a pioneering tech ethicist who paved the way for the hotly-debated issues around Facebook, privacy, ethical design, digital well-being, and what it means to be human in the digital age. He is the founder of All Tech Is Human, an initiative to better align tech with the human interests of users and society, and is the co-host of Funny as Tech–a live show and podcast that tackles the thorniest issues in tech. David serves on the advisory boards for Common Sense’s Digital Citizenship Advisory Council, the non-profit #ICANHELP, and Hack Mental Health. In 2015, he co-founded the global Digital Citizenship Summit. David is currently researching the impact that “scaling intimacy” has on human relationships, and whether we are becoming botified (and less authentic) in our communications. SHOW NOTES Welcome to the first episode of Fast Forward: The Post-Pandemic Innovation Podcast! To kick the show off, Charlie Oliver shares a bit about the topics we'll be discussing on the show in the coming months. She then takes us on a brief jaunt back to the future to explore how the word "innovation" has been defined in the past (including why being called an innovator centuries ago would've gotten you thrown in jail with a decapitated ear!) and how our modern, American definition of (and extreme pride in) innovation might be detrimental in the post-pandemic world. How will we define the new, post-pandemic culture of innovation? This is the start of an ongoing conversation and exploration Charlie will have on the show! ARTICLES MENTIONED . Innovation: The History of a Buzzword -- In the 17th century, "innovators" didn't get accolades. They got their ears cut off. In this episode, I welcome Anne T. Griffin, a human and product manager, in that order (as she says), who studied engineering at the University of Michigan. She is passionate about the human aspects of technology and building machine learning and AI products rooted in the realities of the human experience. She is also an Emerging Tech Correspondent for Tech2025, a platform and community for learning about, and discussing emerging technologies such as AI. Tech2025, incidentally, company founded by another Tech Intersect Guest, Charlie Oliver—so listen to ep 4 to hear my conversation with Charlie about the future of technology. Anne's current focus is on exploring what "fairness" means at a product level and how teams can integrate empathy and awareness of the impact of bias into the creative and development process. She has worked with major companies such as Microsoft, Mercedes-Benz, American Express, Comcast, and Colgate-Palmolive. So her background and expertise make her uniquely qualified for the work she does today. Anne shares her origin story, thoughts on some of the most promising technologies in the Web 3.0 build, the most pressing challenges and concerns about bias in the build of Web 3.0. We talk also talk solutions and the imperative for inclusion to ensure there are diverse people with diverse perspectives and talents at the laptop as we usher in the fourth industrial revolution. **Rate This Podcast** Guest social assets: Twitter: https://twitter.com/annetgriffinWeb: https://www.annetgriffin.com/Email: ANNE@ANNETGRIFFIN.COM Mentions: Tonl: https://tonl.co/ (stock images reflecting POC)Episode 4 with Charlie Oliver of Tech 2025: https://share.transistor.fm/s/42b73883Full Show Notes: https://techintersectpodcast.com/listen/episodes-shownotes/**Watch the mental health and wealth expert Anthony Ware Ask Me Anything (AMA) Replay** Contact:Questions and requests: hello@techintersectpodcast.com Follow: Twitter @AtTechIntersect Instagram @TechIntersect Web: http://www.TechIntersectPodcast.com Subscribe to the Triple L Weekly: http://eepurl.com/gKqDyP (early episode access + info)Want early access to episodes, exclusive content including full show notes, live video chats and replays, a copy of my e-book, The Gen Xers Guide to Upskilling for a Web 3.0 World and self-guided course of the same name? How can we demystify AI? Why is the general public often both awed and afraid of artificial intelligence? Why is there a gulf between the excitement from enterprise to utilize AI and trepidation from the public? In this episode of thinkPod, we are joined by Sameer Maskey (Founder & CEO of Fusemachines) and Charlie Oliver (Founder & CEO of Tech2025). We talk to Sameer and Charlie about increasing the accessibility of AI, the importance of ethics and how that can be determined, and how talent is evenly distributed by opportunity is not. We explore algorithmic bias, our complicated feelings towards AI, the importance of gathering insight into how the general public is feeling about emerging technology, and why you may want to take a MOOC right now. “Within AI, there's such a variety of work that needs to be done. There is obviously the building of AI Systems and that's where a lot of conversation gets focused on. What we lose sight of [is] all the different parts of AI from ethics to...all the questions around culture, and there's so many other things that could make AI much more accessible to other human beings and make it more conducive to people.” -Sameer Maskey “[D]on't believe what they tell you about what you know and don't know. Because we've been talked down to about technologies for so long, especially women, especially people of color...You know more than you think you know in your ideas are really necessary right now.”-Charlie Oliver Connect with thinkLeaders and our panelists: @IBMthinkLeaders @sameermaskey @itscomplicated BIOS CHARLIE OLIVER In the Fall of 2016, Charlie Oliver launched Tech2025 to educate entrepreneurs and consumers on the next wave of disruptive, emerging technologies that are expected to drastically change our world in the next decade (AI, machine learning, driverless vehicles, IoT, blockchain, VR, etc.), through live-events and interactive workshops with industry experts. The mission of Tech2025 is to help entrepreneurs and the general public to understand and embrace emerging technologies. SAMEER MASKEY Sameer Maskey is the founder and CEO of Fusemachines Inc., a company that makes Artificial Intelligence accessible to everyone through education, software, and services. Tech 2025's Charlie Oliver stops by the Foursquare office to discuss her approach to engaging and energizing the public with topics on emerging technology. We discuss: - The evolving attitudes of some of the industry leaders and technical experts, and the disconnect between themselves and the people affects by their creations. - How to engage the public on topics like Machine Learning, AI, and Blockchain without going the route of the "technical boring lecture" - How passions and emotions can be stirred up by product creation; and can take the creators completely by surprise. This is a packed episode. Check out tech2025.com, and enjoy!
Charlie Oliver is the CEO and founder of ServedFresh Media and founder of Tech2025, a leading technology focused community based in the New York City area. Our conversation covered the emergence of online communities in the late 2000s and the genesis of Tech2025 in late 2016. She discusses the divide that exists between people that work in the tech industry and average citizens, and the potential value that emerges from putting people together from different backgrounds. Charlie shares her observations of the changing views of AI and tech companies by the public, and the need for to have collaborative conversations to avert further backlash against the tech industry. Charlie is an experience podcaster and communicator, and this conversation highlights the challenges and opportunities that emerge from curated communities.
How are emerging technologies like artificial intelligence shaping our world and how we interact with one another? What do different demographics think about AI risk and a robot-filled future? And how can the average citizen contribute not only to the AI discussion, but AI's development? The gang is joined by first re-occurring guest and former Northern Illinois soccer play Charlie Oliver to discuss the World Cup. We also touch on the Pirates, Doc Ellis' no hitter on LSD and beating your friends in sports. The Stanley Cup and NBA Finals is wrapped up, and Ovechkin may be on the best bender ever.
