Ten years ago, Chaz Ebert talked to us about grief and loss as she was mourning the 2013 death of her husband, movie critic Roger Ebert. Her deep sense of connection to Roger continued after he was gone, including, she described, hearing his voice and feeling like they were still in conversation. When Chaz talked about this a decade ago, though, she was skittish about sharing too much about their ongoing communication, nervous that it would sound too out there.  No longer.  When we talked just a few weeks ago, Chaz described a lifetime of intuitive sensing, a skill she inherited from her mother. While her conversations with Roger have stopped, her intuition still powers much of what she does, including writing her new book, which she describes as “a download from the universe.” It's called It's Time to Give a FECK: Elevating Humanity through Forgiveness, Empathy, Compassion and Kindness. This week, we listen back to our original conversation with Chaz and hear what has shifted in the ten years since.  Podcast production by Andrew Dunn.  Death, Sex & Money is now produced by Slate! It is hard to pinpoint when Chaz Ebert first experienced Life Itself, Steve James's documentary about her late husband and the legendary film critic, Roger Ebert. Initially conceived as a multi-year project to capture Roger's vibrant life and career, the film also documented what would become the final weeks of Roger's life. Film icons like Werner Herzog, Ava Duvernay, and Martin Scorcese illustrate the ways in which Roger's work inspired them individually and impacted culture on a broad scale. Tracing Roger's journey from cub reporter to cultural icon and devoted family man, the film is a testament to his ardently populist sensibility, larger-than-life personality, fierce love of movies, and the vigor with which he met every day even as he endured life with cancer and its effects. In conversation with Cooper and Tabitha, Chaz reveals the one movie review Roger acknowledged he got wrong, her reluctance to continue filming as Roger's health deteriorated, what it meant to experience the film's premiere with an audience at Sundance, and how their shared concern for humanity continues to inspire her work today. We return to explore the theme of passing – and the duality of preserving one's identity while being forced to navigate the world in certain ways.  Joining us for this episode are producer and philanthropist Brenda Robinson and CEO and civil rights attorney Chaz Ebert. As Executive Producers on the film Passing (2021), Brenda and Chaz have so much to share on their respective roles, as well as the vital importance of the critically-acclaimed movie.  Together, we examine systems of oppression and share personal stories of what we gotta do – and what we've had to do – to survive and thrive historically. We also examine Modern Day Passing and the many ways we might pass (intentionally or otherwise) outside of skin color.   What is modern-day passing and what are the roles we play to gain equity? How do you find ways to fit into the dominant culture? How do you stay true to self and show up empowered and authentic to everything that you are?   QUESTIONS Power-producers Chaz Ebert and Brenda Robinson join hosts Jason and Yvonne Lee to talk access. In this mini-reunion, these four friends and film professionals share why they do what they do – and that is to lift and provide opportunity for voices of color working in film. By highlighting impactful projects like Regina Hall's award-winning debut film, Passing, to new projects like veteran Lisa Cortes' documentary Empire of Ebony which covers 70 years of culture from Ebony and Jet magazines, we learn from the inside what it's like to operate from what can often feel like the outside. We also learn that what matters in this industry is being empowered from within, showing up to the table as your authentic self… and knowing that the table you're at is THE table.     What do you gain by not having to pass as anything?   In our very first episode with a delicious mocktail, we acknowledge the increasingly popular addition of inclusive mocktails as a beverage choice in social situations. Jason whips up a non-alcoholic French 75 and the conversation flows, as always. Knowing that modern-day passing takes on many, many forms, our guests also share personal stories of how passing has affected them and how it has shown up in their own families. Yvonne poingantly presents Chaz and Brenda with their confessional question, what more needs to be done  so that people of color can show up authentically and not have to pass for anything?   For more spirited discussions, make sure to subscribe to the podcast. And if you've enjoyed thinking and mocktailing along with us, we'd love for you to leave us a review.   Cheers … and Please Drink Responsibly!   Links:   Guests: Brenda K. Our first episode of the year features our new friend of the show, director Melissa Haizlip. Her film, Mr. Soul, features her uncle, Ellis Haizlip - a queer, Black, television producer and host of the first known Black variety show called Soul out of New York City.  We talk with Melissa in depth about the importance of the show Soul that ran from 1968 - 1973 on PBS stations across the country, James Baldwin, Black culture, Lenny Kravitz, poetry, the magic of Robert Glasper, and more. The show Soul is an extremely important part of American culture and we hope that Melissa's film will spark a new interest in Ellis Haizlip and his Black culture movement. You can find Soul on different platforms here. “The movies are like a machine that generates empathy.” In the debut episode of the Remainders podcast, Darren Vorel and Patrick McIntyre dive into the Roger Ebert documentary Life Itself. Ebert was a man who won a Pulitzer for film criticism, had a severe drinking problem, and was unafraid to share his excruciating crawl to death for the world to see. But what does he have to say about life? And what did Darren and Patrick learn from his philosophy? And who the fuck is Pauline Kael? Join us as we grapple with the questions that comprise life itself. Explore More:www.remainderspod.com

“Chaz is a strong woman, sure of herself. I'd never met anyone like her,” wrote her late husband, Roger Ebert. Truth be told: neither have I. Chaz Ebert is a singular soul. Wise, kind, and extremely busy. She's the CEO of Ebert companies, including RogerEbert.com. She's a publisher of books, a philanthropist, and a TV and film producer. I've known Chaz for seven years, and this week we finally sat down to talk– about her upbringing on the West Side of Chicago, her marriage with Roger, the time spent grieving in his absence, and how she plans continue creating her legacy. Strange Fruit #120: Portland Poetry Series to Feature LGBTQ Poets in June

The Portland Poetry Series will focus on LGBTQ poets at their June event, in honor of Pride Month. Co-producer Eli Keel joins us this week, along with poet and writer Adriena Dame, who will read at the event. The series happens in the Tim Faulkner Gallery, once a month, and has been going strong since last December. While there's always a strong LGBTQ presence at the event, Keel says that this time, it will be more intentional than incidental. "We decided for Pride Month we wanted to really focus in on that, and not have it just be a thing that happened as we reached out to the poets that we know and love." We asked Adriena Dame whether her intersecting identities influence her work. She said that coming out changed her writing in ways she didn't expect. "I thought, ok well that just means that people will know that I'm queer," she remembers. But suddenly her poems and stories were populated with lesbians, bisexual, and transgender characters. "They became all of those other dynamics of an entire population that I sort of neglected in my writing, prior to coming out." Keel says the series wants to shake up old ideas of how poetry readings are structured, and even who poets are. ("They're not just old white guys," he says). This installment of the Portland Poetry Series is on June 8th at 7:30, and will have three or four open mic slots in addition to the featured readers - so get there when the doors open at 7 if you want to put your name in the hat! The event is free. In our Juicy Fruit segment this week, we talk about the biker gang shootout in Waco, Texas, and try to imagine how the media coverage would have been different had black urban gangs opened fire on each other in a public place. The bikers involved were largely white and middle aged, with the oldest being in his mid-60s. "Where are the headlines for that?" Jai wonders. "Where are the people asking what's wrong with middle aged and elderly white America, that y'all need to ride around on motorcycles and shoot each other with AK-47s?" We also talk about what Emmett Till (and his mother Mamie) meant to America and the Civil Rights movement. Till's murder will be the subject of a movie that's currently in development. Chaz Ebert will produce the film, which is based on the book "Death of Innocence: The Story of the Hate Crime That Changed America." And R.I.P. "dancery." This week, Mary J. Blige revealed that the lyrics to her beloved dance floor masterpiece "Family Affair" might not be what we thought!
