** PLEASE SUBSCRIBE ** It's the world premiere episode of Where'd You Get Your Funk From! Featured in WYGYFF Episode 1: Legendary bassist and leader of one of the most successful funk, R&B and pop bands of all time – Robert "Kool" Bell of Kool & the Gang! He is the last original surviving member of a band that was founded 55 years ago – notching 25 Top 10 R&B hits, 31 gold & platinum-selling albums and 7 Grammy Awards along the way – and recorded classics like “Jungle Boogie,” “Hollywood Swinging,” “Funky Stuff,” “Summer Madness,” “Spirit of the Boogie,” “Open Sesame,” “Ladies Night,” “Celebration,” “Too Hot,” “Get Down on It” and dozens more. This year, Kool and the Gang is FINALLY being inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. RECORDED SEPTEMBER 2024 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright. Reflecting on George's remarkable career, his widow, Hahn Brown, shares insights into his creative journey. "George was always immersed in music," she recalls. "He began writing for the band early in our relationship, but it wasn't until later that he pursued his solo work." Hahn describes George's songwriting as deeply personal and reflective. "He drew inspiration from his own experiences and the world around him. His lyrics were a reflection of his emotions, relationships, and observations of life." Danny Painter had the honour to chat to his widow, Hahn Brown, about the legacy, the music and the album! His legacy continues through the remaining members of Kool and The Gang who are still touring the world and set for a stop in South Africa this November in Cape Town and Pretoria.

For over fifty years, Kool & the Gang have been essential innovators of funk, soul, disco, and R&B, creating rock & roll's most danceable anthems. They are one of the grooviest and most sampled bands of all time, with a recognizable sound that resonates across generations and has brought joy to millions of fans around the globe.Kool & the Gang took their funky groove all the way to the top with a mix of pop songwriting, fantastic vocals, and a killer horn section. Formed in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1964, brothers Robert "Kool" and Ronald Bell got their start in clubs, mastering a repertoire of jazz standards and Motown covers. In 1969, they signed to newly formed De-Lite Records and released the up-tempo instrumental "Kool & the Gang." They subsequently released two live albums showcasing their ability to produce brilliantly crafted songs and blistering jams over an infectious beat. Their big break came in 1973 with the album Wild and Peaceful, which leaned deep into funky grooves, horn arrangements, and chanted vocals on the songs "Funky Stuff," "Jungle Boogie," and "Hollywood Swinging" - three instant dance floor classics. They slid easily into the growing disco scene, with their "Open Sesame" featured on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. In the 1980s, Kool & the Gang added lead vocalist James "J.T." Taylor and released two massive hits, the bumping "Ladies Night" and the smooth "Too Hot." With this, they accomplished something rare in the music industry - maintaining the fans who loved their funky roots, while reaching an entirely new audience tuned into their growing pop sensibilities. In 1980, they blew the roof off with the international hit "Celebration" and produced nineteen charting singles during the decade. Kool & the Gang's impact cannot be understated - from the throwback grooves of Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars to the inclusion of the group's songs in almost every party playlist. Countless samples of their music laid the foundation for some of hip-hop's biggest hits by artists including Eric B. & Rakim, Tupac, Lil' Kim, and JAY-Z.
