It was a weekend of firsts across the state as October drew to a close. Notre Dame-Fairfield is 7-0 after beating Masuk for the first time since 2005. Coming off its first loss of the season, No. 7 West Haven handed No. 4 Newtown its first loss. Shelton, meanwhile, handed No. 6 North Haven its first on-field loss of the season while returning to the top 10 poll for the first time in a month. Up north, Manchester rallied to defeat Berlin 27-21 and is 5-1 for the first time since 2008 (a fact we didn't learn 'til after). Windham rallied to hand Stonington its first loss of the season. Back south, Wilton defeated Darien for the first time since 2007. And FIVE teams simultaneously earned their first victories of the season. Greenwich is still first in the latest GameTimeCT Top 10 football poll, but St. Joseph was the first team to hold the Cards under 30 points since Stamford did it Week 2. (Greenwich still won, 23-9, and might have become the first team to unofficially clinch a CIAC playoff spot. In Preps, Salisbury became the first team to beat Cheshire Academy. Everybody's anxious to see who'll emerge first in the Founders League when Choate and Avon Old Farms meet Saturday. This is also our first week without a guest. Coincidence? Hmm... But never fear, it's yet another jam packed episode with all the highlights and playoff outlooks you'll need on this first of November. So join us, won't you? Welcome to another edition of The Meat Grinder, Connecticut's only award winning high school football podcast, brought to you by GameTimeCT and CT Insider. A supposed off-week was anything but as several big results rocked the early 2023 season — Cheshire topped Shelton in overtime, Darien rallied to beat McMahon and Hand bested Fairfield Prep in overtime. All three featured crucial, if not controversial, late-game calls. Those games at least matched, if not overshadowed, several big games on the docket, including North Haven's triumphant return to the field after forfeiting its season opener due to alleged student misconduct, and Cheshire Academy's big New England showdown with defending champ Brunswick. Join GameTimeCT's Sean Patrick Bowley and Pete Paguaga as they sift through the wreckage of the week that was, including a rundown of the latest top 10 poll and the upcoming slate of Alliance games, headlined by No. 1 Greenwich at No. 3 Maloney. Veterans Advocate, Scott Freyer is the Awakened Soul Story of the Week! Scott and I live in the same town, Griswold Connecticut we have both lived there for 9 years and for some reason, never officially met. We would see each other at basketball games – and in passing at a local restaurant – but never were introduced. I would see his posts on social media and on various town FB pages – I always admired the way he would handle himself on some pretty contentious comments made by others. He seems to take the mediator side of things or with a comical comeback. I also noticed that he was very involved in his children's lives, his community and has a strong advocate interest in veteran's organizations. This is what piqued my interest in what he was really all about. I wanted to know more about him and what drove him to help others. We have chatted a few times about various things, local politics, helping people during the lockdown and about how we could do better to help others in the community. So, I was very excited that he agreed to an interview for Awakened Soul Stories. I had a great time taking to him during the interview and came away with a renewed admiration and respect for Scott and the kind of person that he is. I hope you will listen to this episode and get to know Scott like I have. He is a very AWAKENED human as you will hear, he does a lot to help the human race elevate the vibration so that one day – we can all, just get along and understand each other on a whole other level. Peace and prosperity will prevail with people like Scott doing their part! About Scott: Scott Freyer was born in Red Bank, NJ in August of 1970 and grew up on the Jersey Shore. After graduating high school in 1988, he enlisted in the United States Navy and joined the submarine force. During his time in the service, Scott was stationed in Charleston, SC and Groton, CT. He deployed during Operation Desert Storm, Operation Deliberate Force, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. In 2012, Scott retired from the Navy after 24 years as a Chief Petty Officer. Scott is currently employed by the US Navy as a Mechanical Engineer at Electric Boat. In 2001, Scott met his wife Brenda on a blind date, and they were married in May of 2003. In December 2004, Brenda gave birth to their first child Dylan, who is currently an All-State soccer and lacrosse player at Cheshire Academy in Cheshire CT. In January 2007, they had their second child, Olivia. Olivia is an Honor Student at Griswold High School and is on the volleyball and lacrosse teams. Scott and his family reside in the town of Griswold Connecticut. Scott is also the Co-founder of B3 Media with his friend Chris Nott, and they produce and co-host a weekly baseball podcast called "Bronx Baseball & Beer" and is currently the #1 baseball podcast in the state of Connecticut. Scott is also heavily involved in the military community, specifically veterans and veterans suicide prevention advocate groups. He participates in several events every year including the Norwich Irreverent Warriors Silkies Hike and Tough Ruck Boston and has raised over $5000 for these charities. He feels, as a veteran himself that we as a country, can do a better job with making veterans feel that we care and appreciate their service. By raising awareness and fundraising, Scott is doing his part to make sure these Veterans are taken care of. Please feel free to reach out to Scott to make a donation or find out how you can help our veterans. Our guests today are the Rev. Canon David Cannon (Canon Cannon), vicar emeritus of St. James’ Episcopal Church in Poquetanuck (aka Preston) and the Rev. Ron Kolinowski, a former vicar of St. James, Poquetanuck now priest in charge at St. Peter’s, Hebron. David shares his memories and his reflections on two Native American tribes that live there and operate huge casinos: Foxwoods Resort Casino, established by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and first opened in 1992, and the Mohegan Sun, established by the Mohegan Tribe, and first opened in 1996. They were bound by the same contract with the State of Connecticut, but had different histories and approaches David Cannon was born in 1937 and this year will celebrate the 55th year of his ordination. In 2013 a local newspaper did a feature on Fr. Cannon. The writer described how the '60s shaped David as a young man; how he, with his wife, Ann-etta, remained active in the community, particularly in education; and how he spent nearly all of his ministry at St. James in Poquetanuck, located near the casinos in southeast Connecticut. David lived and raised his family in a house on the edge of St. James’ property. He retired from St. James in 1999 and after a few years was invited back as “vicar emeritus,” which went against the wisdom and advice of the bishop and diocesan staff, but it worked there. His beloved wife died in 2009 and his eldest son, also named David, died from illnesses in 2010. Father Cannon,” as he’s usually known, has two other children, plus grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He recently has moved to assisted living in Groton. He was joined for this podcast by the Rev. Ron Kolinowski, one of the priests who later served with him at St. James’, and who remains a colleague and friend. During the podcast David also talks about another former vicar at the parish with whom he worked, the Rev. Jaclyn Sheldon, whom he refers to as, "Amma Jackie." We asked him to share his memories, as filtered by time and experience, and recognize there are other people with other perspectives. He starts by talking about his visits to the Mashantucket Pequot reservation with a Roman Catholic nun in the days before the casino. Skip Hayward was the grandson of the guardian of their tradition. "Never leave the reservation," was her mantra. He didn't name her, though it's likely this was Elizabeth George. The precedent for gambling in Connecticut was set by the Roman Catholic and Episcopal churches, David says, because we were allowed bingo and also lotteries to raise funds. (David and Ron reference Bishop Williams and the 1938 hurricane but we couldn't find links to documents. We did find, however, a history of the Episcopal Academy of Connecticut (aka Cheshire Academy) by Lucy Cushing Jarvis, published in 1902, among the Project Canterbury documents. It said the Episcopal Academy needed to raise funds and petitioned the General Assembly for a lottery. It states that: "In 1802, an act was finally passed, granting a lottery, to raise the sum of $15,000." http://anglicanhistory.org/usa/lcjarvis1902/34.html) Because of that, the legal sticking point for the casinos wasn't gambling per se, he said, it was the slots. When Ella Grasso served as governor, the legislature promised that if she approved the casino, they'd only use the income for education. But that didn't last long at all. The casinos certainly led to jobs for tribal nation members, and, to controversy and conflict in the community. David experienced a difference in the way the Mashantucket Pequots and the Mohegans approached the casinos and the expansion over the years, and he sounds disappointed that the "get rich quick" mentality still pervades.
