This week I dive into some of the work Freud wrote later in his life, particularly a book called Civilization and its Discontents published in 1930. Freud believed that the evolutionary process we can use to trace the changes humans have gone through over the centuries can also explain why culture itself has evolved as it has. He basically thinks we are all self-deceiving, chronically unfulfilled and unsatisfied bots programmed to lie to ourselves above all else, and to avoid feeling guilt or shame based on unavoidable urges we all have by lying to ourselves and everyone else about those urges existing. Instead we redirect them. Killing someone in revenge becomes laser tag this weekend. Driving 100mph like an asshole to work everyday becomes gokarts and beers on Friday night. Cheating with the neighbor becomes an Only Fans subscription or a weekend at a swinger's convention. In this episode I cover morality, guilt, shame, intoxication, sublimation, civilization, and Freud's views on why all of these things exist in the human species. Support the show

Who is Jesus? Who is it that we say He is? Who is it that He desires us to know Him as?

Abstract The Theological and Christological conversations between Chrisianity and Islam have historically centered on Jesus as either prophet or messiah. But Mary or Mariam, mother of Jesus is also mentioned more times in the Qur'an than in the entire New Testament. Some consider her role to be a bridge between the two faiths, an icon of purity and piety. But there is no cult of Mary in Islam and as some have pointed out, her virginal status does not represent the ideal of the feminine in Islamic cultures. Yet Mary as both a woman and devotee, enjoys a distinct position in Islamic thought even if ultimately it is Jesus who became the star of the story. Reverend Eloise Oliver, an African American elder who is Pastor of the East Bay Church of Religious Science speaks about her life, the Bible, our addictive society, and other things of spiritual and social import. The East Bay Church of Religious Science is a "new thought" church and the East Bay Church, based in Oakland, California is especially inclusive in terms ethnicity and religious traditions. The majority of the members are African American and all of the members of many ethnicities may come from a range of traditions of Islam, Buddhism, Judaism and Chrisianity. It has a very very positive approach and emphasizes the the empowerment of individuals as well as love. Rev. E, as she is called, is very inspiring and contributes much to the community.
