An episode that reshapes holiday traditions. Here's what's in store for today's episode: * In today's episode, we explore how to have a joyful neurodivergent Christmas by prioritizing your needs and letting go of expectations.* We discuss how autistics rely on routines, and how the holidays can disrupt them, leading to dysregulation and chaos.* Matt and Angela dive into how Hallmark movies portray the stereotypical, picture-perfect version of Christmas—a version that often feels far removed from reality, especially for autistics. They explore how these idealized depictions can create unrealistic expectations and fail to consider the unique ways neurodivergent individuals experience the holiday season.* We talk about how, since autism is genetic, many people in the household during the holidays might also be silently navigating sensory overload while juggling holiday pressures.* Our hosts discuss the challenges of having family members who are autistic but don't identify as such or seek a diagnosis, and how this lack of acknowledgment can increase masking for the openly autistic individuals around them.* Having meltdowns around Christmas doesn't have to feel overwhelming or unmanageable—as long as you have the right tools in place, like sensory supports or safe people to help you navigate the moment.* We discuss the importance of advocating for accommodations and using the acceptance of those accommodations—such as turning off the TV, avoiding twinkle lights, or lowering noise levels for sensory reasons—as a baseline for deciding whether or not to attend holiday gatherings.* We also discuss how unusual and counterintuitive it is for autistics that physical touch, like hugging and kissing relatives, is so heavily emphasized during the holidays. We also dive into how odd—and frankly creepy—it is that kids are expected to sit on a mall Santa's lap and share their secrets.* Having a comfort kit is essential for an autistic person during the holidays—packed with stim toys, eye masks, comfort blankets, and other items to support sensory regulation.* We talk about Matt's Christmas Dragon tradition, which he created with his son, and the importance of crafting personalized family traditions that cater to your sensory and emotional regulation needs.* Matt and Angela discuss the importance of setting and enforcing boundaries at holiday events, including creating a plan to leave early if overstimulation occurs or if the situation calls for it.* We discuss the autistic tendency to be thoughtful gift-givers, as we often pay close attention to and deeply consider people's interests when selecting presents.* Holidays can be especially challenging for autistic people because we're not always able to access our safe foods. We discuss autistic food rules around the holidays, emphasizing that you don't have to eat the family meal if it's unbearable for you. Sometimes, a McNugget platter might be the best food tradition to introduce in an autistic household.* Self-care strategies during the holidays are vital for autistic people. We share some strategies that might work for you, including creating a list of holiday comfort shows and movies, using Christmas-themed comfort blankets and candles, and doing the planning work to ensure your holiday aligns with your needs and preferences.“So, if you're listening to this on the day it's released, you have somehow survived Thanksgiving if you celebrate. And now there is Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, the day after Christmas, Boxing Day. There's still all of the New Year's expectations. And then there's this entire week or two off school, which, if you're a parent, you have your children at home and still have to figure out how to work. So everything is jumbled and out of order. If you're somebody who has created a life and a schedule to minimize sensory interruptions and other jilted expectations, the holidays are here to f**k with that.” - Angela “We are told what Christmas is, but yet there are an infinite number of variables that impact upon that. Everything from credit card debt to the thing that you're supposed to buy, you can't find.” - Matt“Create a safety plan, do self-care because honestly, the gauntlet between Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, and Valentine's Day is just this long stretch of psychological horror.” - MattIn today's episode, we dive into navigating the holiday season as an autistic person, focusing on how to manage sensory overload, advocate for accommodations, and create a comfortable environment. At the birth of Christ was Mary, baby Jesus, and a... dragon? Well, that is how John describes the story of Jesus' birth in the book of Revelation. The dragon waiting to devour the child. The child who would become king. The King of kings and Lord of lords. The dragon doesn't devour the child at His birth, but certainly continues to try and destroy Him and all the rest of His people. Unfortunately, the victory will never belong to the dragon. After this, though, maybe you'll consider adding the red dragon to your nativity/manger scene!

#ActuallyAutistic podcast hosts, Dr. Angela Lauria and Matt Lowry, LPP, discuss their complicated feelings around Christmas—there is holiday magic but also overstimulation, family stress, and past trauma. They talk about Christmas TV specials that resonate with autistic experiences, like Charlie Brown feeling overwhelmed while others find joy, or the Grinch hating loud noises. They talk about Autistic glimmers (the opposite of triggers) like time with special interests, sensory delights, and routines; using the example of Matt's son who loves Christmas villages and light decorations. They also validate the seasonal triggers like excessive noise, increased social expectations, gift-giving misalignments, and food sensitivities.“Every gift you receive is a risk and then every gift you give is a risk. And…expectation sensitivity and Christmas, it's hard to find that magic…I think that's like the lights, like…Every year, the lights are pretty much the same. Yes! and I get so excited to see them every year.” - AngelaThey analyze Santa Claus' many Autistic traits and discuss certain elements of Christmas stories that reflect Autistic characteristics. Connections are drawn between neurodivergent people feeling excluded for being "different," and outcast characters like Rudolph and Hermie the elf/dentist.“It very much resonates with neurodivergent people and, you know, people who have been excluded for being different—even though our differences matter and our differences are valuable. Because we need dentists in the world. We need bright lights in the fog. Because just by being like the other ‘normal' reindeer, Santa would have failed.” - MattThe hosts emphasize wishing for more openness and peace during the holidays and the entire year. Matt shares another “Autistica” story he wrote about an Autistic child who meets a magical Christmas dragon that understands him when Santa could not. The dragon embodies acceptance, celebration of difference, and bringing people joy.“The dragon huffed and it puffed and held its breath for a bit, and all of a sudden, this dragon was lit. The dragon's horns and its spikes lit up every hue. The boy basked in the glow. What a marvelous view.” - The Christmas Dragon, by MattWhat are some of your holiday glimmers? Scripture: Revelation 12:7-12 The heavenly vision of that first Christmas—according to the Apostle John in the Book of Revelation—was of a dragon (Satan) seeking to devour the newborn King (Jesus). However, Jesus conquered the dragon and now sits enthroned in the heavens. The follow-up question that gets dealt with in this sermon is, “If Jesus won the victory, why does it often feel like defeat?”

Having heard the Christmas story many times, it stirs up familiar images in our mind's eye. The Lord Jesus is welcomed into the world by his mother and father. A young couple, just getting started, stare down at the baby boy wrapped in swaddling clothes. They smile with delight and have all of the normal reactions that come with being a first time parent, “He has your nose. Look at all that hair.” But in addition to the delight one experiences in taking the child in, finally being able to see after nine months what this kid looks like, they have other thoughts to contend with, thoughts that none of us as parents have ever had to deal with, thoughts like, “What is to become of this child? I hold the messiah in my hands. I am a virgin mother. The angel said to me, ‘He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.' And it is my job to raise Him. God help me.”

Scripture: Revelation 12:1-6 This is not your average nativity story. There’s no mention of Bethlehem, Shepherds, Wise Men, or an inn; but there is a woman, a baby being born…and a dragon. This is Christmas according to Revelation 12. And in the first few verses we are introduced to three main characters: A Woman, A Dragon, and a Baby.

Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church (REPC) - Sermons

In all the Christmas nativities I have seen, I have never run across one that included this particular character. Of course, there is always Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus. Often you will have the shepherds and a few sheep. Larger scenes will include the three wisemen and even their camels. I have even seen boys with drums, ladies offering eggs, and multiple angels included. However, I have never seen one of the most central figures in the birth of Christ including the Red Dragon. Come this Christmas to see why we must begin to acknowledge his presence if we would fully appreciate the birth of Christ into this world. To come prepared for worship, take time this week to read and meditate upon Revelation 12:1-17, Genesis 3:15, Matthew 2:16, 1 Peter 5:8, and Westminster Confession of Faith 8.

In today's program, it's our 2022 Christmas Special. We've been putting this show together annually since 2018 and I want to thank personally J. Blake Fischa for making sure we did produce this show this year. I've been so ridiculously busy during the latter stages of this year that I didn't think I'd have time to put this together. I really thought that All Request Christmas was going to be our Christmas Special this year but Blake DM'd me on Twitter and ask if we were going to do the show.  I said, "No".  I got a reply back with just the letter "K". I know it's tough to reading tone online but I could just feel the disappointment. So, I slept on it, woke up the next day and wrote Blake back saying, "You know what... I got to thinking last night and I think we should still do the Holiday Celebration episode anyway. It's something that all of us at CSR can work on together. So, yes, we are going to do our annual Christmas show as well as the All Request Show." So there, you can thank Blake for this show and we will always put together an annual Christmas show for you from now on. I promise! Before we begin I just want to again personally offer my thanks to the great team here at Cinematic Sound Radio.   55 new shows went out this year including this one and not including any new shows that go up from now until the end of the year. We are almost 25,000 downloads away from 500,000 total downloads since we made this show a podcast... or at least as long as I've been tracking the show on Podtrac and Chartable. We are up 101,000 downloads since this time last year, which is incredible. We've been ranking in the top 200 all over the world. People really like the show and so I have to send out a big thanks to Jason Drury, Eric Silver, J. Blake Fichera, Robert Daniels, Randy Andrews, the voice of CSR Tim Burden, in-house composer David Coscina, and Ley Bricknell. And of course, I cannot forget you... the listener. Thank you very much for spending some time with us today! And a big shout out to the Cinematic Sound Radio Patreon family. It's been a great year conversing with you, getting to talk to some of you personally on the show and as well as sharing some of your favourite music on the podcast via the All Request Show, which is one of my favourite things ever in the 26-year history of the show. I can't wait to do more in 2023. As we did over the course of the past FIVE years, this show is a collaborative effort. Each participating host will get a segment of their own on the program to play whatever festival score they see fit. On today's program, seven CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST hosts join me again to celebrate the holiday season by playing Christmas-themed music from a wide variety of film, TV and video game scores. Join Robert Daniels from OBSCURE SCORES, Jason Drury from THE ARCHIVE & TALKING SOUNDTRACKS, Ley Bricknell from FILMIC, J. Blake Fichera from SCORED TO DEATH RADIO, Randy Andrews from THE ANIME SPECTACULAR & THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS, Eric Silver from THE 1UPBEAT, the voice of CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO, Tim Burden and me, Erik Woods, for our annual Yuletide spectacular. A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars[1] on her head. She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth. Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon[2] with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns[3] on its heads. Its tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth. The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her child the moment he was born. She gave birth to a son, a male child, who “will rule all the nations with an iron scepter.”[4] And her child was snatched up to God and to his throne. The woman fled into the wilderness to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days[5]… The dragon pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle,[6] so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time,[7] out of the serpent’s reach. Then from his mouth the serpent spewed water like a river, to overtake the woman and sweep her away with the torrent. But the earth helped the woman by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that the dragon had spewed out of his mouth.[8] Then the dragon was enraged at the woman[9] and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring—those who keep God’s commands and hold fast their testimony about Jesus. (Revelation 12: 1-6, 13-17) Did you know that was a Christmas story? Here’s what part of it looks like in Matthew’s Gospel.

Chip and Cern are already off topic talking about “winter ales/beers” that are seasonal around Xmas time. Cern recalls some beer called Snow Cap that Chip and Cern had to choke down because Tony and Dana wouldn’t drink the beer. Chip and Cern get back on track and cover the Christmas lights, decorations, and Chip and Cern compare lighting setups.    Egg Nog? Yay or nay? Cern says big NAY! Chip doesn’t weigh in.   A few years ago Chip moved up and got a house, in the ‘burbs, so he would have to get a proper Christmas tree. Chip dropped some big bucks, say $400, on a pre-lit Xmas Tree, so he puts the tree up in the first weekend in November. Cern was appalled.    Cern compares lighting setups to Chip. Several different styles, animals and colors.   Cern shares some stories about his dad getting pissed off about the lights getting ripped off the house because of the bulbs being out.   Chip shares a story from his youth about his mom’s hella extra Xmas decorations and she took it as a challenge from Chip.    Cern has been begging his wife for a Christmas Dragon, but no dice.    Chip has always wanted to do an X Rated X-Mas Album with the likes of “I saw mommy blowing Santa Claus”   Chip inquires about Cern’s LED light projector which is a good investment for a 2 story house.    Chip’s wife says “this is the most dad podcast of all time.”   Is Nov 3rd too early to put up all the Xmas stuff? When your mom has a beard on her knee from a man who may or may not be your dad or Santa, you're best option is to obsess over Christmas until you're in your thirties and then you go all Buffalo Bob so that you can become the actual Santa. Not just copy cat. Actually Santa. Christmas Evil is arguably one of the strangest Xmas films ever created. It was made a time when horror movies tried to play on any holiday and the jingly time was no different. See (but don't watch) such films as Santa's Slay, Santa Claws, Don't Open til Christmas, Black Christmas, etc... However there's a complete banana-factor to this feature. Unfortunately to get to that banana-factor you have to go through a fairly uneventful montage of a man going all Santa. The performances are all solid and the cinematography is competent especially considering this is a drive-thru film. So that leaves you with an hour of not really having much to do. It's quiet, slow-moving and leaves not much room for riffing. I wouldn't call it boring, per se, but if you're coming for a mover-this ain't the one. However, in the end, you've been left with one of the most clear, "Wait, what?" moments in any genre of film, let alone a holiday film. We won't go into the final 10 seconds of Christmas Evil here, but it makes the whole experience worth it.  Happy Holidays, Stinker Family! “Do not pray for an easy life; pray for the strength to endure a difficult one.” Sometimes this quote is misunderstood—out of context it seems like Bruce is encouraging you to toughen up because winter is coming. But these words are not about praying for the strength to fight against a hard life. Within the context of Bruce Lee’s philosophy of harmony, the “strength” Bruce is referring to is one of calm and flow. An easy life is not something you get because you pray for it or fight for it, the ease comes when you practice self-actualization and achieve peace of mind. If you only look at Bruce Lee as the ripped warrior, it is easy to misinterpret this quote to be about getting tough and developing physical strength to defend against a difficult life. When you understand who Bruce Lee was as a total human being, you know he could not have had the negative mentality that life was a constant struggle to be defended against. Bruce Lee was about keeping the mind on the positive and being in the flow. Endurance is about having the stamina to experience your whole life. It’s about inviting all of the experiences, including the challenges and catastrophes, because every experience has a lesson in it. “The good life is a process, it’s not a state of being. The good life constituted a direction selected by the total organism when there is freedom to move in any direction.” The first step in the good life process is freeing your mind from the limiting thoughts that are preventing you from engaging fully in life. “The cultivation of the spirit is elusive and difficult and the tendency toward it is rarely spontaneous.” You have to work at this, the cultivation of your spirit and root does not happen automatically. You cannot quit when it gets tough. “The true stillness is the stillness in movement.” If you develop your inner being and you have a strong root from which you function, then your life can be moving around you in a spiral of ups and down, but you at the root can maintain your stillness in the middle of it. “Wisdom does not consist in trying to wrest the good from the evil, but in learning to ride them as a cork adapts itself to the crests and troughs of the waves.” Take Action: What happens to you when you get thrown by life’s difficulties? Can you be more flexible and adaptable? Notice what kind of escape fantasy you have and when you have it. What are you praying for to take you out of your current life? Where are you trying to force instead of flow? #AAHA James Wong Howe was a Chinese American cinematographer born in 1899 and worked on over 130 films. In the 1930s and 1940s, Howe was one of the most sought after cinematographers in Hollywood. He was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and won twice for The Rose Tattoo (1955) and Hud (1963). Howe was prevented from becoming a U.S. citizen until the repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1943. Prior to WWII, he met his wife and they married in Paris in 1937. Due to anti-miscegenation laws, the marriage would not be legally recognized in the U.S. until 1949. James Wong Howe died in 1976 at age 76. Howe, you were a creative and social pioneer, and we think you’re awesome! #BruceLeeMoment A moment from Daniel: “My wife and I went out of town to visit our parents over Thanksgiving, and we came back home on Sunday the 27th, I wasn't even aware that it was Bruce Lee's birthday. I previously went out and bought a inflatable Christmas Dragon for the yard, right after Halloween, in Bruce's honor of course. I put it up as soon as we got back home, which just happen to be his birthday, which would come to my attention through your podcast the following day. I just thought the Dragon was perfect and so was the timing, with his work being a more in depth influence on my life, as of the last 2 years.” Share your #AAHAs, #BruceLeeMoments, and #TakeAction progress with us at hello@brucelee.com Find the full version of our show notes at BruceLee.com/podcast
