Tara Clerkin Trio - "The Turning Ground," a 2023 single on World of Echo On today's hypnotic and dreamy Song of the Day, the Bristol-based band Tara Clerkin Trio draw influence from the dub-step-heavy influences of their backyard (think Portishead and Massive Attack), combined with their own past as the eight-piece psych-folk group the Tara Clerkin Band. (“You could say the Tara Clerkin Trio started mainly because everyone else un-joined the Tara Clerkin Band,” Clerkin tells Loud & Quiet. “A lot of the other members went traveling or had babies, so we're basically the leftovers.”) The track will appear on the five-song EP titled On the Turning Ground, out November 3rd via World of Echo, the partner label of the esteemed London record store of the same name. Páiric Clerkin, CEO of the Irish Primary Principals' Network, reacts to Government criticism of special educational provision in some schools.
In my opinion, Carl Clerkin is one of the most original – and certainly one of the wittiest – designers currently practicing. He graduated from the now-defunct furniture course of the Royal College of Art in the late '90s, a time when many of his contemporaries were dreaming of fame and fortune with a glamorous Italian manufacturer. However, he steered a very different – more local – course. His work, which ranges from industrial to fine art pieces, is always imbued with a sense of narrative and not a little charm. Clerkin is also a teacher at Kingston University and has curated exhibitions such as The Learned Society of Extra Ordinary Objects at London's Somerset House. He returns to the London venue this month with The Beasley Brothers' Repair Shop, as part of the gallery's new show Eternally Yours – an exhibition about repair, care and healing. In this episode we talk about: his new installation at Somerset House and the importance of mending; the role narrative and humour plays in his work; feeling uncomfortable in the art world and becoming a designer by default; growing up in London's Eastend; the influence of Michael Marriott; his love of teaching… and his fascination with buckets. The Round 1 qualifier draw has been made, with the pairing that pits Mayo against Monaghan giving supporters of both counties a first-ever Championship meeting between them to look forward to. In this episode of the Mayo News Football Podcast, host Rob Murphy is joined by podcast regular Edwin McGreal and by Monaghan native Malachy Clerkin of the Irish Times for a first look at what's set to be a seismic knockout clash. With Mayo and Monaghan having suffered deflating losses within their respective provinces, the lads consider the aura of pessimism in both counties, looking at how Monaghan so often trade consistency in the League for inconsistency in the Championship and examining Mayo's current woes, including how they compare with Monaghan's. Malachy also chats about Banty and his management team, the Farneymen's playing style, the evergreen Conor McManus and loads more besides. Make sure to join our brand new Patreon community. Recruitment Journeys: The Podcast Series (from Mint Recruitment)
Niall Clerkin was, as he puts it himself, “fit as a fiddle”. He was running marathons left, right and centre, and living his best healthy life. He was also a Recruiter by day, and had enjoyed a wonderful recruitment career, proudly listing “million dollar biller” and senior recruitment executive as some of his accolades. Then, after a relatively inconspicuous visit to the doctors, he found himself, surprisingly, on the wrong end of a quadruple heart bypass. With no clues for the cause of this life changing event coming from his lifestyle or family history, Niall had to seriously consider whether the stress of being a career Recruiter could have been a factor. This podcast is an eye opener and a real wake up call to all us “fit and healthy” Recruiters who reckon it couldn't happen to us.
Eddie Brennan has been in Henry Shefflin's shoes before as a former player turned manager facing his old master and he joins Will and Michael on this week's Throw-In to analyse and discuss the fall-out from that handshake between Shefflin and Cody after yesterday's game between Galway and Kilkenny. Elsewhere they discuss the manner of Galway's win and what Kilkenny need to do as they face Dublin next in Parnell Park. Munster's only game was the meeting of Cork and Clare and the Banner county have made it two wins from two with their two point win following on from their victory over Tipperary the previous week. Dick Clerkin was on the show to look back on all the weekend football action with the main talking point the defeat of All-Ireland Champions, Tyrone, at the hands of Derry. Tyrone may have been under-performing this year but don't write Tyrone off, warns Dick. Let's not forget the form of Derry in winning either who nearly got promoted to Division 1 this year and now face Monaghan in the Ulster semis who beat Down on Saturday. In Leinster, it was a comprehensive 23 point win for Dublin over Wexford and compared to their performance last year it bodes well for their season after all the talk of the Dubs faltering. Their next opponents are familiar foes, Meath, who beat Wicklow by 10 points. In the other semi in Leinster, it will be Kildare v Westmeath. Elsewhere, in Connacht, Roscommon beat Sligo while in Munster, Tipperary beat Waterford and Limerick made history winning the first-ever penalty shoot-out in the senior football Championship. Every Monday the Throw-In brings you the best insights and analysis from all the weekend GAA action. And don't forget to listen to Philly McMahon's show every Friday where he gives his take on the Football Championship. Listen and follow on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts from. We haven't even eaten our Easter eggs yet and we're looking ahead to the first weekend of the All-Ireland football championship. Mikey Stafford and Rory O'Neill are joined by Malachy Clerkin and Eamonn Fitzmaurice to look ahead to the new look, early summer championship.
Kerry are the 2022 football league champions with a fifteen point hammering of Mayo over the weekend but it was David Clifford's magic that once again set the game apart. Donnchadh Boyle and Dick Clerkin joined Sinéad Kissane on this week's Throw-In podcast to discuss all the football action and while Clifford's 1-06 was breathtaking, it's the rest of his game that really makes him special says Clerkin. “He is so creative, not just with himself, and to me that almost sets him apart. He just does so much damage to a team - again not just from his own boot, but from his own hands and vision - you could probably associate at least a goal and fifteen to him directly yesterday. It's just a phenomenal return for one player in an attacking unit that you know I've never seen myself, but I guess we're just privileged to be watching it at the minute.” Roscommon collected the Division 2 title with an injury time goal to seal the win over Galway while Cavan took Division 4 with victory over Tipperary and in Division 3 Mickey Harte continues to work his managerial wonders with Louth's win over Limerick that sees the Wee County return to Division 2. Meanwhile, in the hurling, John Mullane joined Sinéad and Donnchadh to look back on Waterford's fourth hurling league title after the Déise beat Cork by six points and 2022 could be a special year for the county he says. “They went up, collected the cup, took the congratulations, took the pats on the back and it was a case of we move on, Championship in two weeks' time and that's a sign of a really, really good team and what possibly could become a great team. They know what they want to achieve and I think everything's in place for them to go and possibly achieve the ultimate this year.” Every Monday the Throw-In brings you the best insights and analysis from all the weekend GAA action. We met with Patrick the host of the Man V Mob podcast to discuss his ideas about the decentralization of modern society. We debated whether the Government should in fact be decentralized into smaller operating units or perhaps be updated to resemble other modern 21st century organizations? Will the Government be forced to adapt to new technological innovations and decentralize in order to survive? What are some good examples of decentralization that we have already seen in our society? And of course Bitcoin. Enjoy! Find Patrick at: https://manvmobpodcast.podbean.com/
