Upper Limb Therapy for Infants and Young Children with Unilateral Cerebral Palsy: A Clinical FrameworkSusan Greaves, Brian HoarePMID: 39598017 PMCID: PMC11594546 DOI: 10.3390/jcm13226873AbstractEarly detection and rehabilitation interventions are essential to optimise motor function in infants and young children with unilateral cerebral palsy. In this paper we report a clinical framework aimed at enhancing upper limb therapy for infants and young children with unilateral cerebral palsy during a sensitive period of brain development. We describe two major therapeutic approaches based on motor learning principles and evidence: constraint-induced movement therapy and bimanual therapy. These two therapies have demonstrated efficacy in older children and emerging evidence is available for their application to infants younger than 2 years of age. To provide clinicians with guidance as to when to implement these therapies, we discuss the key consideration when undertaking upper limb therapy programs. In addition, we describe the factors to consider when choosing which approach may be suitable for an individual child and family. Detailed strategies for implementing these therapies in infants and young children of different ability levels are given. Keywords: bimanual therapy; constraint-induced movement therapy; early intervention; unilateral cerebral palsy; upper limb.https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39598017/
On Gramsci in the 21st century. [Patreon Exclusive] Sociologist Nathan Sperber and our own George Hoare talk to Alex H and Lee Jones about the new edition to their book, An Introduction to Antonio Gramsci: His Life, Thought and Legacy, which includes a new chapter on Gramsci's relevance to contemporary politics and events and a new section on Gramsci's influence on the New Right. We discuss: How does this book differ from other introductions to Gramsci? What is wrong with the post-Marxist, post-colonial or culturalist version of Gramsci? What are Gramsci's top 3 insights into politics? How has Gramsci been taken up by the political Right? How has Gramsci been used and abused by the Left? What to make of the post-Marxist radical democracy of Laclau and Mouffe ("left-populism")? Why is the concept of the "national-popular" that Gramsci takes from the Jacobins so important to rediscover?

Today we'll be talking about the material of worship. The literal material. We sat down with Robert Hoare, the managing director of vestment maker, Watts & Co, to talk about its venerable and sometimes quirky history, and the ancient and unbelievable craftsmanship of the chasubles, cassocks, copes, surplices, maniples, mitres, stoles, and humeral veils Christian clergy wear today, to lead the people of God into the presence of God. And this episode isn't just for people who know what a maniple is. Anyone interested in history, art, sustainable industry, English stuff, or a good yarn will also enjoy this episode. We'll hear about commissions for the royal family, the formidable women of Watts & Co, the flood that took out several centuries of hand embroidery, secrets of the craft, how vestments might be attracting young people to church, and our longing for beauty in a world of technologized homogeneity. Robert Hoare and his sister, Marie-Severine de Caraman Chimay, are fifth-generation owners of Watts. Is this a conversation about art and worship, or a sales pitch for beautiful vestments? We hope we thread that needle. We hope you enjoy the conversation.Watts & Co websiteOpus Anglicanum needleworkSubscribe to The Living Church for $9.95.Give to support this podcast.

What does Kim Kardashian, dog training, Sarah Jessica Parker, fringes & J-Lo's password all have in common? This episode with the gorgeous Jo Hoare!!!!! Editorial Lead at Boots, celebrity journalist, multi author and former Beauty Editor at heat Magazine, Jo has some incredible stories to tell! Such a brilliant conversation, Jo begins by telling me about how she always knew she wanted to write, it was something that came so naturally for her, although she wasn't sure which direction it would take her. A chance meeting at a party was to change the course of her career, catapulting her into the world of Heat Magazine 20 years ago. An initial short term role turned into over a decade as the Fashion & Beauty Editor of the publication, citing it as a time for her that she wished she could bottle! Jo's life was hectic, fast paced and fun, at the height of when we as a society would live for the weekly gossip that was crammed into the glossy pages of our favourite magazine. We reminiscence about the days when we would wait all week to sit and devour a copy, and the nostalgia of the everchanging landscape of the media industry. Gone are the times when we would all huddle together at the same time every week to watch the likes of Pop Idol & X Factor, an excuse for family and friends to get together and so often the thread that bound communities in gossip! Jo takes me on a journey, having left Heat 7 years ago, as the rise of |Instagram was taking hold, she tells me that it took a while to get used to, as her life was so all consumed by her work for such a long time, being in that full on environment, leaving it was a transitional period for her. We chat celebrities, social media, and the age in which we now live where people can become overnight sensations. Also the drawbacks to this when talent is often getting overshadowed in favour of the people who are constantly showing their face online. We explore the rise in TikTok when it comes to the fashion and beauty industry, Jo says although she was reluctant to join at first, she's so glad she did as it's a wealth of information and being able to keep your finger on the pulse (and also not wanting to feel old she says!) when it comes to trends, it is a "revolution"! We talk about the dangers of the platform, and the ease of which people can cement themselves as "experts" which can make for a dangerous outlet. In her role as Fashion & Beauty Editor at Boots, she is driven by the passion to educate their audience, by giving them the correct information which is always backed up by the science and the best industry expertise. More recently she has hosted The Skin Clinic, which covers a wide range of health and beauty topics, again featuring industry professionals and experts to make sure that women know that it's information they can trust and rely upon. The biggest game of the year for Galway's senior footballers takes place on Saturday (29th June 2024) when they challenge reigning champions Dublin in the All-Ireland quarter-final. It's 90 years (1934) since the last of two championship victories for Galway over Dublin. “I think I'm ready for it. I'm excited for it. I have a lot of self-hatred, anger and adrenaline kicking in for this race. I know it's just the beginning of my season…With this, it's just about proving where I belong in Australian running and I have to back myself thinking I am in record holder in the event and I should act like it and train like it. I feel like we've been training smart and training well over the past few months. I've gone from a little confidence to a lot of confidence in about six weeks.” Australian Olympian and 1500m national record holder Olli Hoare unfortunately had to miss last year's World Championships with a sports hernia and some swelling in the groin area. He had just run a personal best of 3:29.41 at the Oslo Diamond League but the pain was too much to race through. After some time off and some heavy cross-training, he rejoined his OAC teammates for workouts in the fall and will race for the first time this weekend at the Australian National Championships. In this episode, Mac Fleet and him talk about the comeback process, what it was like watching his teammate have success at the World Indoor Championships, the way 1500m racing has evolved and more. Go To Statement Considered Harmful is a solid classic entry in the X Considered Harmful metafiction genre, authored by renowned computer scientist and idiosyncratic grump, Edsger Wybe Dijkstra. Surprisingly (given the impact it's had) this is a minuscule speck of a paper, lasting only 1-ish pages, and it even digresses several times from the main point. Fear not! Jimmy and I spend the entirety of these two podcast hours thoroughly analyzing the paper, wringing every last drop of insight from it, speaking directly to how programming ought to be reimagined from the molten venture capital core on up. Yes indeed, this is another episode in the fine tradition of Future of Coding where we stay faithfully close to the text, we leave the second-order implications alone, and there's nothing more than that. Nothing portended, nothing changed. Links => patreon.com/futureofcoding Hest, which Jimmy is convinced that I refuse to call by name, or even talk about. He's clearly mistaken — and yet, I feel his philosophical force on my hand even now. Conundrum considered harmful. When did you negotiate for yourself last time? I bet it was quite recently! That's why it's time to sharpen your negotiation skills and find the hidden value in your next negotiation, may it be for a job interview or a client meeting. Please meet my guest, Richard Hoare, of this week's Reaching your Goals episode. Richard just won the UK business book award for the book "Do Deal: Negotiate better. Tap hidden value. Enrich relationships." Richard has worked as a lawyer in the music industry for the past 20 years. His firm Hoare Associates represents a dazzling array of talent, and some of the most innovative and exciting businesses working in music today. When he is not negotiating deals for these clients, Richard enjoys spending time in his shed with his synthesisers, or out in the wilds, walking or climbing. Richard lives in Somerset in the UK , with his wife Rowena, 2 young boys and infuriating beagle called Mara. "When we're talking about Do Deal, we're really talking about the verb of how you deal with people... as an ongoing kind of living thing." Richard Hoare didn't set out to become an expert on negotiation. In fact his first attempt at negotiation, when he was offered a poorly paid first job in the music industry involved, he admits, no negotiation at all. But after a career at the top of legal services in the music industry he's learned a thing or two, and recognized the need for a short, straightforward book that set out the principles of successful negotiation in a way that anyone could grasp and use. Spoiler alert: It's not about getting your own way, it's about uncovering value and nurturing relationships. And because it was written with a co-author, the book involved some negotiation along the way itself. In this week's conversation Richard shares his tactics for writing collaboratively, and indeed writing at all alongside a busy work schedule, together with some practical and profound insights on the art of the (better) deal.
In 1520 the artist Albrecht Dürer was on the run from the Plague and on the look-out for distraction when he heard that a huge whale had been beached on the coast of Zeeland. So he set off to see the astonishing creature for himself. In this beautifully-evoked episode the award-winning writing Philip Hoare takes us back to those consequential days in 1520. We catch sight of Dürer, the great master of the Northern Renaissance, as he searches for the whale. This, he realises, is his chance to make his greatest ever print. Philip Hoare is the author of nine works of non-fiction, including biographies of Stephen Tennant and Noël Coward, and the studies, Wilde's Last Stand and England's Lost Eden. Spike Island was chosen by W.G. Sebald as his book of the year for 2001. In 2009, Leviathan or, The Whale won the 2009 BBC Samuel Johnson Prize for non-fiction. It was followed in 2013 by The Sea Inside, and in 2017 by RISINGTIDEFALLINGSTAR. His new book, Albert & the Whale led the New York Times to call the author a 'forceful weather system' of his own. He is Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Southampton, and co-curator, with Angela Cockayne, of the digital projects http://www.mobydickbigread.com/ and https://www.ancientmarinerbigread.com/ As ever, much, much more about this episode is to be found at our website tttpodcast.com. Show notes Scene One: Nuremberg, home of Albrecht Dürer, at the height of its power as an imperial city, of art and technology. Scene Two: The Low Countries. Driven out of Nuremberg by the plague and a city in lockdown, Dürer escapes to the seaside. Scene Three: Halfway through his year away, Dürer hears a whale has been stranded in Zeeland. This is his chance to make his greatest print, a follow up to his hit woodcut of a rhinoceros. What follows next is near disaster, a mortal act. It changes his life. Memento: Memento: A lock of Dürer's hair (which Hoare would use to regenerate him and then get him to paint his portrait) People/Social Presenter: Violet Moller Guest: Philip Hoare Production: Maria Nolan Podcast partner: Colorgraph Follow us on Twitter: @tttpodcast_ Or on Facebook See where 1520 fits on our Timeline
