Bean and Dan are joined once more by one of the good friends of Chronscast, Tade Thompson, to discuss the great David Lynch's towering masterpiece, Mulholland Drive. Lynch is one of our favourite filmmakers, and his films continue to astound and bewilder like no other director's can. We wanted to do an episode to give our own small tribute to the great man, so you can imagine our delight when our old pal Tade told us of his own love for Lynch. We decided to talk about Mulholand Drive, as it is probably his greatest work, arguably his most successful and influential, and often cited as one of the greatest films of the 21st century. At once a poison-pen-cum-love-letter to Hollywood, the film reflects Lynch's own highly complicated relationship with the moviemaking machine in Los Angeles. It follows the story of Betty, whose own nightmarish descent through the Dante-like hellish circles of Hollywood, encompassing ambition, fame, envy, murder, corruption, glamour, sex, and betrayal is portrayed in an ever-expanding web of intrigue, (self)-deceit and guilt. The film mixes noir thriller with surreal horror, and finds time for some incredible set pieces, including one of the greatest sleights-of-hand in cinema during the scene at Club Silencio. We will be discussing spoilers as usual, but with a film like Mulholland Drive, spoilers arguably don't matter. What matters is that you go and watch it.Tade Thompson is the author of several modern science fiction hits, including the award-winning Rosewater trilogy, Far From The Light Of Heaven, and other works such as The Murders of Molly Southbourne, and Jackdaw, which itself is a nightmarish descent into madness worthy of Lynch himself.Join us in the next episode when Tade will continue to chat with us about the perils of AI technology in the writing and publishing industry, as well as his current screenwriting work.
Welcome to episode 77 of Cineflek with your host Ethan Colburn! This week I am joined by Austin to discuss Mulholland Dr.! We paired this movie with a Club Silencio. In this episode, Luke Annand and guest Dr. Philippe Mather journey through the filmography of Luke's favorite filmmaker, Stanley Kubrick. Along the way, they bring up the best "I'm Spartacus!" parody, compare the Stargate sequence to the Club Silencio scene in Mulholland Drive and do Cinema Inception with Twister, The Shining, Summer of '42 and Now, Voyager.Mark Ayres "March (From "A Clockwork Orange")
In honor of the late David Lynch we watched and reviewed Mulholland Dr. This neo-noir surreal film is surprisingly one of the weirder of Lynch's work but makes a lot of sense if you accept that ITS ALL A DREAM! Enjoy and see what we mean by listening now!! Also follow along with the ten rules of watching this film! Pay particular attention in the beginning of the film: At least two clues are revealed before the credits. Notice appearances of the red lampshade. Can you hear the title of the film that Adam Kesher is auditioning actresses for? Is it mentioned again? An accident is a terrible event—notice the location of the accident. Who gives a key, and why? Notice the robe, the ashtray, the coffee cup. What is felt, realized and gathered at the Club Silencio? Did talent alone help Camilla? Note the occurrences surrounding the man behind Winkie's. In the first lockdown of 2020, Juno Dawson's editor was expecting a YA thriller—but all she wanted to write was Desperate Housewives, with witches. We talk about organizing multiple storylines, plotting a trilogy, and the question of “At what point do you turn the card”—when do you reveal information to the reader? Plus the delightful idea that a story is like a VHS tape for your brain, the fact that the voice of Lady Whistledown narrates her audiobook, and how you can find YOUR story—and tell it best. Juno Dawson is a bestselling novelist, screenwriter, journalist, and a columnist for Attitude Magazine. Juno's books include the global bestsellers, THIS BOOK IS GAY and CLEAN. She won the 2020 YA Book Prize for MEAT MARKET. Her first adult fantasy trilogy HER MAJESTY'S ROYAL COVEN arrives in 2022. She also writes for television and has multiple shows in development both in the UK and US. Her debut short film was THE BIRTH OF VENUS (BBC 2020) and she created the first official Doctor Who scripted podcast DOCTOR WHO: REDACTED (BBC Sounds 2022). An occasional actress and model, Juno had a cameo in the BBC's I MAY DESTROY YOU (2020), a recurring role in HOLBY CITY (BBC 2021) and was the face of Jecca Cosmetics Play Pots campaign. Juno grew up in West Yorkshire, writing imaginary episodes of Doctor Who. She later turned her talent to journalism, interviewing luminaries such as Steps and Atomic Kitten, before writing a weekly serial in a Brighton newspaper. Her writing has appeared in Glamour, The Pool, Dazed and the Guardian. She has appeared on Pointless Celebrities, BBC Women's Hour, Front Row, ITV News, Channel 5 News, This Morning and Newsnight. Juno lives in Brighton. She is a part of the queer cabaret collective known as CLUB SILENCIO. In 2014, Juno became a School Role Model for the charity STONEWALL.
Lights! Camera! WTAF?!? This week, we follow our favorite mastermind on a dark and duplicative detour through Tinsel Town. We here at the 4-top thought—for a variety of reasons that we hope will become apparent—that this was the perfect moment to check out one of our favorite Lynch films, Mulholland Drive. Following our discussion of Episode 10, we jump back to 2001 to see what the director was up to in the period between “Fire Walk With Me” and Twin Peaks Season 3. In this very special special, Jennifer kicks us off by examining the resonances between the film and the show; Colin is seeing palimpsests everywhere; Damon is pondering the figure lurking behind Winkie's; and Jonathan gets a hand stamp for Club Silencio and the portals beyond. For our Hollywood Twist, we ask again if all of David Lynch's work unfurls in the same universe…LISTEN: Apple Podcasts | Google Podcasts | BuzzSprout | Spotify | RSS | and more!MULHOLLAND DRIVE NOTESDavid Lynch (writer and director)

Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle
Few films released in the 21st century have as universal a reputation as David Lynch's 2001 thriller Mulholland Drive. To that end, a celebration of the film and its 20th anniversary hardly qualifies as "the world of film from a fresh angle." Yet, the movie's surrealistic tone and multi-layered tale likely flew under the radar for some mainstream moviegoers. So listen in as returning guest Albert Lanier lays out what he believes to be the "Lynch pin" to understanding Mulholland Drive. In this episode, we'll compare interpretations of the film's final act, discuss its origin as a TV pilot, and attempt to decipher one of cinema's most inscrutable minds. "There is no band," at Club Silencio. But here is an entire discussion all about Lynch's critically lauded, Oscar-nominated masterpiece: Mulholland Drive. SYNOPSIS A dark-haired woman (Laura Elena Harring) is left amnesiac after a car crash. After wandering the streets of Los Angeles, she takes refuge in an apartment. There she is discovered by Betty (Naomi Watts), a wholesome Midwestern blonde who has come to the City of Angels seeking fame as an actress. Together, the two attempt to solve the mystery of Rita's true identity. SHOW NOTES Join the Crooked Table Patreon: Patreon.com/CrookedTable Subscribe to the Crooked Table Podcast on Apple Podcasts! The cows take a drive with Abe and Agnes Callard (Philosophy, U. Of Chicago) and Ryan Clark into David Lynch's fantastical and depraved version of Los Angeles. What mysteries will they find in Club Silencio, or on the set of the Sylvia North Story? What explains the continued appeal of Lynch's absurdist masterpiece? How does he deploy narrative and filmic tropes to subvert his audience's expectations and what are we to make of the often frustrating and contradictory results? It’s all a tape.
