Episode 54 | AI, CIO ChallengesThe Big Themes:Community Summit NA: Wayne talks about attending Community Summit and how the event stands out by offering user-driven insights that focus on real-world experiences with Microsoft ecosystems, rather than vendor-led marketing. The Summit provides a platform where users share practical, firsthand knowledge, allowing attendees to gain a deeper understanding of how Microsoft technologies work in real business settings. By fostering a community of real-world users, the Summit helps businesses navigate the complexities of implementing new technologies. The CIO's evolving role amid AI demands: There's growing pressure on CIOs to adopt AI-driven strategies, reflecting a shift where AI, in particular, generative AI, is no longer just an optional tool but an expectation from executives and boards. This trend is reshaping industries differently. While sectors like finance can afford significant R&D investments in AI, others, such as retail, face tighter budgets and must be more strategic.Balancing innovation with cost control in AI Investments: They discuss the growing complexity and cost of AI investments, with Wayne urging CIOs to carefully evaluate the financial implications of adopting AI technologies. He points out that as AI tools become more integrated into business operations, their costs, including ongoing subscription fees, are likely to rise. CIOs must be strategic about which AI tools and platforms they adopt, ensuring that they do not overcommit financially. The Big Quote: “We're drowning in information, we've got to move faster, and some of the GenAI and traditional AI stuff is taking a lot . . . away from us so we can move to operate at a higher level of reasoning, of thinking, of overseeing."

Mary and Sam update us on their preparations for Community Summit, running October 13 to 17 in San Antonio, and the types of conversations and connections the PayTrace team are planning for at the event at booth 1027. MSDW is previewing Community Summit North America 2024 with a new series of quick podcast episodes featuring exhibitors. In this episode, we speak with Joe Christensen, founder of Aqueducts Consulting. The team at Aqueducts thinks a lot about how to help Dynamics 365 F&O and AX customers find success in their reporting and data management efforts, Joe tells us. He has seen plenty of pain and frustration among customers over the years, and there are many good reasons why, from the technology to project planning to user adoption and organizational change. Reporting challenges often come down to a solution's reliability, Joe explains. When there's no reliability, a company's reporting system often reverts to becoming little more than key people and tools, rather than something designed to deliver reports to everyone. We also discuss the evolution of the Dynamics 365 F&O data strategy, first with the introduction of Export to Data Lake and now Synapse Link. The Aqueducts Consulting booth at Summit will give attendees as unique "data factory" experience, and Joe explains what that will look like, blending concepts, technology, and operational process. More information: See the Aqueducts Consulting teaw at Booth 1817 Partner Solution Showcase: Tuesday October 15th, 10:45-11:45 AM Come by to cover reporting out of D365F&O. Hear from your peers on how they designed their reporting out of F&O, with a special focus on Synapse Link, and the lakehouse/data warehouse approaches. And ask me about Report Factory! It's our new way of making sure your team can survive when any of your key people leave the BI / reporting team. In this episode, we speak with Fauwaz Hussain, Senior Director of Strategy at Nodus Technologies. Nodus specializes in payment acceptance and accounts receivable automation solutions that integrate with all Microsoft Dynamics platforms, and Fauwaz tells us how that expertise aligns with some of the key themes that attendees can expect at Summit. AI conversations are increasingly important, he believes. And the future of Dynamics GP will continue to be a key talking point for users. Fauwaz is presenting with other GP experts on how to separate fact from fiction when it comes to the future of GP. One of the key themes that Nodus will communicate to Dynamics ERP users, especially those who still have on-premises ERPs, is that they can still modernize their tech stack in a variety of ways without moving their core ERP to the cloud. And Fauwaz's advice for a new show attendees: absorb as much information as you can from as many resources as possible. The Biz Apps Classroom travelled to Slovenia last week for DynamicsMinds 2024, the Dynamics and Power Platform community conference in its second year, and we caught up with Microsoft channel expert Joe Corigliano to talk partner training and skills. Joe wears several hats in the Microsoft channel community, helping build connections, plan events like the partner track at DynamicsMinds, and working with firms on their Microsoft strategy via his role at Ciellos. Joe talks with Julie and Jason about his work, his experiences at DynamicsMinds 2024, and his plans for future events and projects. He explained that partners face a range of challenges today in their Microsoft businesses, from administrative hurdles like optimizing the use of Partner Center to achieving the solution designations needed for maximum channel benefits. Certifications play an important role in those Microsoft designations, along with sales, utilization, and other metrics. We also discuss other ways that partner firms are findings success with non-traditional business models that don't involve the solution designations and may not align with Microsoft's incentives. Regardless of the strategy, relationships between firms will continue to drive a lot of the success partners achieve, Joe believs. Julie and Joe also talk about how community connections have evolved in the Microsoft biz apps channel. Developing a richer set of relationships will fall to people who work in this space directly, they believe, and it will require a range of efforts. Joe's outlook for the year includes his own podcast, organizing July's Biz Apps Partner Summit, and Community Summit. I was lucky enough to attend the very first PASS Summit in 1999. It was a brand new event, and while not overly large, it was busy and crowded in the basement of a Chicago Loop hotel. I had the chance to meet Kalen Delaney there and ask her a question. That was the highlight of the trip, but I also learned a lot about SQL Server 6.5 and 7 there, spending all the time I could in sessions and hanging out after each one listening to the questions others asked the speakers. Since then, I have been lucky enough to go to most of the Summits. The event has changed a bit, and I look forward to going to see friends each year and re-connect with them. I've also loved meeting new people, often those I've corresponded with online. Each event has been memorable and exhausting at the same time. It's a busy week, and I can sometimes feel overwhelmed. However, it's always felt like it was worth the trip. Read the rest of Looking Forward to the PASS Data Community Summit 2023

Matt Mullenweg held court at the annual State of the Word event on December 15. Several topics were touched, including the use of Gutenberg outside of WordPress, the return of in-person Meetups and WordCamps, and the announcement of a Community Summit set to take place in 2023. Mullenweg also detailed a change to the WordPress.org Plugin and Theme repositories. Taxonomies have been added that allow authors to categorize their products as “commercial” or “community” - among other labels. The goal is to help users better understand the purpose of and level of support provided by theme and plugin authors. The feature is opt-in, and it's already being put to use by some products. As usual, the event was packed with insight and information. The WP Minute has a handy summary of key moments, along with a full transcript. It's accompanied by a video highlight package that condenses the entire event down to just over 16 minutes. You'll also want to check out State of the Word recaps from both Sarah Gooding at WP Tavern and Courtney Robertson at GoDaddy. Links You Shouldn't Miss There's a new competitor in the WordPress email newsletter space. WordPress.com Newsletter was announced this week. The feature allows users to publish new posts as email newsletters, collect subscribers, and design a template. Monetization features are in the works with details forthcoming. Meanwhile, our own Matt Medeiros offers his analysis of the product via a new video. The subject of WordPress nostalgia seems to be popular these days. The WP Minute's Eric Karkovack looks at why that is and how it could help us shape the future of the community. Security firm Wordfence has released a free vulnerability database API. Hosting companies, security researchers, and individual users will have access to a continuously updated repository of vulnerabilities. The company hopes that the community “will turn this data into free and commercial security products that will improve the security of the WordPress community.” What does the future look like for ClassicPress? The open source project is a fork of WordPress that retains the TinyMCE-based Classic Editor. A new poll asks users whether the content management system should be “re-forked” to WordPress 6.0 or continue along its current path, based on WordPress 4.9. At this year's Data Community Summit 2022, I am a part of the day 2 keynote. I'm excited to deliver some thoughts and memories of the event. I'm mostly excited the Summit still exists, and I am looking forward to seeing many of you in Seattle in person again. If you haven't registered, think about it. This is the best place to meet other data professionals, network, and not only get knowledge from the experts, but ask them your question in person. Someone brought to my attention the original event from PASS wasn't the Summit, but was the Compass '99 conference. I saw a recap of the event on the ITProToday site, which brought back memories. I had attended the event early in my career, convincing my boss that this data specific event would be good for both them and me. It was, and it led me to unfathomable success throughout my time working with databases, along with great personal joy. Read the rest of From Compass '99 to Data Community Summit 2022

I went to the first Community Summit in 1999. This was one of the first conferences of my career, and I was excited to have one focused on SQL Server and data. I met Kalen Delaney and shook her hand after having her educate me about how tempdb worked in SQL Server 7. That event started a 20-year journey of traveling to subsequent Summits nearly every year since. Over the years, I have a lot of memories from Summits, mostly of people that I've met and talked with. Much of the time I've been at any of the Summits was spent on networking and business purposes more than learning, but I have picked up a few things along the way. Early on Brian Knight and I delivered a presentation in a debate format. We were talking about the pros and cons of using identities. It was an enjoyable session and one where we learned a few things. A developer from Microsoft was in the audience and helped clarify some of the specific numbers related to limitations and scaling issues with using the feature. The PASS Summit has been an annual event for a lot of my career. I attended the first one in 1999 and most of the rest through the years. After last year's virtual Summit, I was concerned that we wouldn't have an annual event where the most, brightest, and friendliest data platform people came together. I’ll be re-jiggering the podcast back end again, so expect some annoying weirdness (fireside.fm appears to be awesome, if expensive) So who’s buying Twitter? Tyler Cowe’s short term focus and going private escape hatch. VMware and AWS “VMware Cloud on AWS” “The service will be operated, sold and supported by VMware (not AWS) but integrate with the rest of AWS’ cloud portfolio (think storage, database, analytics and more).” https://medium.com/@cloud_opinion/aws-blinked–20cddbb537ed#.9cuvcp75o “these customers will go to Cloud, but its really a glorified co-lo.” “AWS should be encouraging customers to develop their workloads to take advantage of Cloud ( microservices, serverless etc ) and not delay it further.” InfoWorld piece: They keep talking about hybrid cloud, but what does that mean here? Just “we use multiple cloud types/providers,” or one application running across different clouds? “As part of the deal, VMware will be AWS’s preferred private cloud partner and Amazon will be VMware’s preferred partner in the public cloud.” Some MSP action: “One of the key differences between this deal and the one VMware announced with IBM in February is that this service is being offered and managed by VMware.” “Interested customers can request access to the service’s private beta starting Thursday, but VMware doesn’t expect the service to be live until early next year. General availability of VMware cloud on AWS will have to wait until even later in 2017.” Brief 451 note No data in DevOps Google Devices Roundup, and AI interlude Revisiting the Apple or Google ecosystem question. I hate having to think about ecosystems when buying electronics. And AI. Walt Mossberg Thinks Siri is Dumb Wired Interview with Obama - dude knows AI. BONUS LINKS, not covered in podcast Container Madness! Nothing much new, just content to riff on Microsoft shipping Commercially Supported (CS) Docker Engine Red Hat and containers - relabel, transitioned from originally a PaaS to CaaS. DockerCon coming to Austin Opentracing joins the Cloud Native Computing Foundation Announcement Open tracing Luke transitions to new Puppet CEO Luke’s announcement in Twitter Luke is one of the main people who started all this stuff, based on annoyance of BladeLogic, cfengine, etc. Did I ever tell the one of how I did a terrible sales job getting Reductive Labs signed up with RedMonk? The new dude looks like the real deal of enterprise infrastructure. Recommendations Matt: Warren Ellis’ Normal - From his latest newsletter “What science fiction, as a field, is good for, is looking at ten thousand possibilities at once," Zapp Branigan reading Trump quotes Brandon: Slate Plus. Also, Harry’s Blades. Coté: iPhone 7 Plus. Live Photos, Rotate mode, Bokeh stuff actually in beta, Home button takes getting used to, Two speakers is better?
Apple has put out three new things - the phone, the watch, and the OS - which we discuss. And then Oracle announced it's destroying Amazon, which is fun.
