Episode 367: Good vs. Evil: The Only Counterspells Worth Playing in Commander!
Join us as we dive into the mechanics and challenges of Counterspell across different editions of D&D and Pathfinder! We break down what works, what doesn't, and how it impacts gameplay. Whether you're a fan of the 2014 D&D rules or prefer Pathfinder's approach or looking forward to the 2024 D&D rules, this episode has something for every tabletop RPG enthusiast! Summary In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, we dive into the mechanics and challenges of the Counterspell ability across various editions of Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder. We discuss the complexities and limitations of Counterspell in the 2024 Edition D&D and Pathfinder 1e, such as the need to ready an action and the high DC for spellcraft checks. The conversation shifts to Pathfinder 2, where Counterspell is streamlined into a reaction-based feat with a DC tied to the caster's save DC, reflecting notable improvements. We compare Counterspell mechanics in Pathfinder 2nd Edition and D&D 5th Edition, examining the strengths and weaknesses of each system. Topics include spell preparation, action economy, and the overall impact of Counterspell on gameplay and player agency. We offer differing perspectives, with one favoring D&D 5th Edition's 2014 rules and another finding Pathfinder 2nd Edition's approach more appealing. This episode provides an in-depth look at Counterspell across RPG systems, touching on its impact on the player experience and exploring possible improvements. Takeaways Counterspell in 3rd edition and Pathfinder 1 has limitations and complexities, including the need to ready an action and the high DC for the spellcraft check. Counterspell in Pathfinder 2 is a feat that can be used as a reaction, and the DC is based on the caster's save DC. The hosts express frustration with the mechanics of Counterspell and suggest potential improvements. Identifying the spell being cast is an important factor in successfully countering a spell. The limitations of Counterspell make it a niche ability that is rarely used in gameplay. Counterspells in Pathfinder 2nd Edition require spellcasters to have the exact spell prepared or use the Clever Counterspell feat at level 12. In D&D 5th Edition, counterspells can be cast as a reaction and require an ability check or a successful saving throw against the caster's spell save DC. The effectiveness of counterspells in both systems depends on factors such as spell level, spellcasting ability, and the target's saving throw proficiency. The changes in Pathfinder 2nd Edition give the target of a counterspell more agency and allow for more strategic decision-making. The 2014 rules of D&D 5th Edition provide a simpler and more accessible approach to counterspells, but some players may find them less satisfying or balanced. Counterspell can be a divisive mechanic in tabletop RPGs, with some players finding it frustrating and others enjoying its strategic elements. The hosts discuss the mechanics of counterspell in Pathfinder and D&D, including the use of spell slots, ability checks, and critical success/failure. They explore potential improvements to counterspell, such as removing the requirement to have the same spell prepared or adding additional action costs. The conversation also touches on other dice systems, including the D10 pool system and the D100 system, and the hosts share their preferences. Ep 115 Community Spotlight: @MothershipGames - 5:37 @LennyWooley - 8:13 @MtgProphet - 20:04 @edhrec - 32:41 @TheTokenOtaku - 46:59 Main Topic - A Case for Blue Disclaimer: There is no right or wrong here. Everyone has feelings, and all feelings are valid. This is an attempt to encourage discussion. Lenny - It feels like blue players always have a trick up their sleeve. And this is one of the most legitimate criticisms of Blue, I've ever heard, and it's also one of the reasons I love blue! With so many cards available at instant speed, Blue gets the longest amount of time to make decisions, and gets to have the most information available when they make said decisions. I think this one is somewhat related to the point above. Specifically, that Blue players can leave up interaction mana, and then if nothing needs interacting, they can draw some cards, or with a lot of things having flash, they can commit resources to the board, and then untap with protection, and the creatures have pseudo-haste. I think this is one of the things that gets people to say “Kill the blue mage first”, and maybe that's valid. It's also a real point that blue players can often “not look too scary until it's too late” This is kind of a good reason to play Blue :) Blue decks tend to sneak by and win out of nowhere. This one upsets people a lot, and I definitely understand it sometimes, like in the case of Blatant Thievery and Expropriate, where the opposing players have invested cards and mana into the permanent. Something like Thada Adel, Acquisitor often gets the same type of reactions, and that one feels less true to me. I think I'd rather clone than steal Thievery feel bad and can cause people to feel afraid to make big plays I've heard of playgroups that rule 0 ban ALL counterspells Don't get me started on Brawl on Arena, in 1-1 counterspells do feel pretty bad :( Sometimes a combo would be able to win at “instant speed” and so even normal removal won't cut it. Prophet's example of Craterhoof and Dockside Have much stricter timing when compared to traditional removal You need to know when a creature is going to be pointed at you when it's on the stack, with traditional removal, you can wait until someone *actually* attacks you. 1-for-1 cards don't scale in Commander. A deck with 30 counterspells in it is probably NOT very good. I honestly think Propaganda is much more annoying than Counterspells. Counterspells can be teamed up on. Although this does kinda stink for the person to the left of the Counterspeller. (But it's also much more tempting for a Blue mage to let spells of player on their left resolve). I think Counterspells are actually kinda bad in Commander (Free ones are the exception here). My Blue Braid's deck has 6 counterspells, but 2 are situational My Morph deck has 2 counterspells Nymris deck has 9, that might be too many… (Many of them cost 5 or more mana) Mono blue wizards has 5, but they are pretty situational and/or versatile, Kheru Spellsnatcher, Mystic Confluence Counterspells in my decks (I do love Draining Whelk) This is tricky, because Counterspells can certainly cause feel bads, but they can also be heroes Counterspells 32/100 cards are blue (or have blue in their color identity). This is roughly ⅓ when it, if everything was equal, it should be ⅕ or less (due to artifacts and lands), so the math definitely points to blue being Salt inducing. Yeah, these can be rage-inducing. Also, these are the kinda effects that lead people to team up on a player, and I tend not to run them too too often (I am guilty of Expropriate AND Time Stretch in the same deck though) Comparison to Sword of Feast and Famine Extra turns Blue wincons can be salt inducing. (iw. Control, combo, or extra turns) It feels like we've been hearing more and more players say they don't care to play or play against blue, so we took to our patrons to find out some reasons people aren't down with one of our favorite colors. White - Stax / MLD Green - Ramp Black - Tutors and discard effects Red - Wheels and other chaos type effects Basically, the rule zero talk needs to be in full-effect here. It really matters when you're BUILDING the deck. Thinking about the given answers playing blue seems like it could be a feels bad, but when you look at the other colors they have mechanics that can cause the same kind of feelings Fact or Fiction Illusionist's Gambit and Aetherize - Protection from being attacked Wrong Turn Plagiarize These are sooo blue, and soooo fun, and perfect 75% cards Clones - Phantasmal Image Can change color, land words, and creature types Supplant Form Spellweaver Volute Sudden Substitution Rite of Replication Clone Legion Faerie Artisans Bident of Thassa Does blue have things other to offer than counters, combos, or extra turns that aren't oppressive? Zack Artifact synergies! Zack wings it Blue lets me feel smart. People like to feel smart. I like having as much info as possible when making a decision, and Blue let's me do that. I mean, come on, Flash! Blue can “Fly under the Radar”. At the same time, when someone attacks you or messes with your stuff, you as a blue player should try and understand this, and take it as the compliment it is (and yeah, be honest with yourself). Also, realize that sometimes you won't have anything going on, but THEY don't know that, and so you might have some unfun games when that happens. Ryan Why do we like blue? You guys! Counterspells in Standard don't have to suck! And actually, this one hasn't sucked for a while, but the meta finally gave it big stuff to counter. Overthinking MTG is a daily podcast where our host, HamHocks42, takes a look at a random card from Magic: the Gathering and talks about it for at least 10 minutes. Often, though, he ends up yammering about whatever's on the top of his mind that the card reminds him of and a half hours passes and it turns out all he's done is share his thoughts on recent news related to Commander, Magic: the Gathering Arena, Modern, Pioneer, Standard, or humorous anecdotes from his kitchen table jank days. If you want to get involved, you can absolutely join the conversation or request specific cards over on Discord: https://discord.gg/yefBNBu Also, our host live streams on Twitch every weekday morning: https://www.twitch.tv/hamhocks42

This is the first in my "Designing [Blank]" series where I talk about how to design basic Magic effects.
Episode 74 is here with a look at how to play with and against counterspells in limited in general, as well as specifically in GRN. With over 190 GRN drafts between them, your hosts break down specific scenarios from some of their GRN games. Additionally, they take a quick check-in on how to crush the Modern Cube on MTGO! 4 Counterspells In Modern That Need To See More Play
Counterspells Against Bullshit and Jive by Brightmoments on Mixcloud Light My Fire: A Counterspell Against Bullshit and Jive Shadow and Light. Shadow and Act. Faulkner and Ellison. Shade Tree and Time to Face the Sun. The rugged elegance of fame and fortune the hood rich way can lure anyone through the nondescript back door of his wildest dreams come true, toward rituals so sordid and raw he wonders if it was curiosity or a brisk curse that brought him there. But everything’s groovy for a while. Wine, weed, and women are flowing and you learn to make music on the monkey’s back, on that high ‘ocean-style’ wave. That’s where Lee Perry sat or huddled or flew or dove in from; in the proud/prowed heart of Kingston, Jamaica’s finest recording studio, just before he torched it, set unapologetic fire to his own creation, the renown Black Ark. He was seated g-like, at the mouth of the fountain in audiocolor, quenched, shunning the show-tunes and battle hymns and monkeys on his mind, (by monkeys I mean anxieties, or the fear of fulfilling the white man’s onerous stereo/and radio/ types of the black man) so he sat there as a king and god and champion of black dignity, in a most plush and throne-like chair he could see, surrounded by such lucky machines and admirers and mirrors from dusk until dawn they were shoving songs into his heart like daggers and dragging his mind into the hive. It could all be so much simpler, he realized, as he burnt the whole thing down that lucky day. Every record, every vibration, every burden disguised as relief or comfort, every perfect circle of wax and wane we call a LongPlay: all into cinders and smoke until broken was the curse and revolving door of a life course superimposed on him by ambition, until he could make healing music again. This emission of the Feed comprises pieces that Lee Perry rescued from the rubble and reassembled. He brought the Ark out of the rouge and into the rain or reign (see also reine) where it is rendered an agent of hope and deliverance. Most basically, he cleared the party of bullshit and jive, he acted like a true Black Cop, and when the unwanted presences turned the quiet corner, he started the music again. He proved that we don’t always need electricity for black music, for we are electricity. So, here we enter his self-made universe in its Era of Good Feelings, in the rejuvenating discomfort of themes such as: How to celebrate a loss, how to eliminate the semantic structure that inverts loss and gain, how to be your own forest, how destruction is a myth or just a flipside of creation, positive, a pause/reset just when things get too theatrical or ridiculous, how to catch on fire and use the rising tempo to access a higher vibration until you’re a bundle of interdependent elements rolling across an omniscient void that is your total mind, how that changes the meaning of end of Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing which I like to call by its nickname Do the Riot Thing, how misconstrued archetypes such as the diva (or the divine) and the collective (check out the Emerald Tablet) are meant to interact, how collectivity defragments (in and of and as) the black imagination, how that collectivity manifests today in both the ‘real’ and ‘cyber’ worlds, how they are different worlds, acting co-dependant though in need of behavior that honors their interdependency, how what they share is a commons, how their whole body is an ear, how to reread Gwendolyn Brooks’ The Preacher Ruminates Behind the Sermon in that context, how the diva takes one for the team by showing up in the places where gathering, especially gathering to listen to things together, feels most ominous, locations such as, in the fire, in the water, in the poem, in the music, in the moment, in the white man, as Frank O’Hara, or Kennedy, or King, or half-breed between these things, or their shared fantasy, which doubles as their shared fear, or All of these at once.
This week on Limited Resources episode #45, Ryan and Marshall cover a range of topics: Counterspells in Limited, Cube Drafting, MTGO on a Mac, Draw or Play decisions, M11 sealed, Red and Black sweepers, and do a Crack-a-Pack! Thanks for listening!
