The 1820 U.S. Census rolled out during what historians often call the "Era of Good Feelings"—a peaceful name for a time that was anything but simple. The War of 1812 had ended just a few years earlier. James Monroe was president, and the country was pushing its borders westward at full speed. Tensions over slavery, expansion, and power were beginning to heat up, even though the surface looked calm. The 1820 census is a small turning point for those tracing family histories. It's still far from perfect—only the head of household is named—but it gives us more than the earlier counts. And if you know how to read between the lines and pair it with other records, it can open up many doors... Kyle Finnegan returned to the Nationals (1 year/ $6M) after originally not being tendered by the team last November. It has been quite the adventure in the past few months for Finnegan, who also surprisingly was not dealt at last summer's trade deadline. Al & Mark (From West Palm Beach) dive into the move as it seems probable that he will slide back into the role of closer. (23:45) Robert Hassell III homered this week and has stood out so far in Grapefruit League play. Hassell was one of the highly touted prospects that was part of the Juan Soto trade, but has dealt with injuries and has yet to make it the Majors. Where does he fit into the crowded outfield? (33:30) Mark's shares his observations from the team first four Spring Training games that included Jake Irvin tossing a scoreless inning in his first outing of 2025. This also includes a handicap of who will earn the 5th Starter's role for the beginning of the season. (40:00) The Nats & Orioles announced they will conclude Spring Training against each other at Nationals Park on Monday March 24th at 1PM. This seems like a sign we are headed to an "Era of Good Feelings" between the two teams. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

In this bonus episode, I share a story from my commute to the British Library last week. In a fleeting moment, I had two choices: to walk the escalator or stand to the right! And instead of thinking what I "should" do, I thought about how each decision would make me feel, and how that feeling would impact the rest of my day and habits. The feeling of accomplishment meant I went on to walk home (instead of get the bus) and enter into my busy high-energy household feeling calm and proud. You probably know this already but it's designed to be a helpful reminder of an effective filter to help you with making supportive decisions that will create the outcomes you want.sallywebstercoaching.com

The conclusion of the War of 1812 elevated America's naval reputation and marked the start of the "Era of Good Feelings," a period of national pride. With peace restored, President Madison redirected attention to the Barbary pirates, who had exploited American merchant ships during the war. Furious at the enslavement of American sailors, Madison secured Congressional approval to wage war against Algiers in early 1815. Naval leaders like Stephen Decatur achieved swift victories, leveraging military strength to negotiate treaties that ended tribute payments and secured favorable terms for the U.S. Decatur's diplomacy extended to Tunis and Tripoli, compelling restitution for captured ships and releasing enslaved Europeans, bolstering America's global standing. The Second Barbary War showcased the growing might of the U.S. Navy, earning respect from European powers and silencing earlier British doubts about American resilience. Celebrations of naval triumphs at home solidified national identity, while the treaties reflected America's emergence as a formidable maritime force.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to another special episode of The Georgia Politics Podcast! In this episode, we turn our focus to the storied history of the Speakers of the House, a pivotal and often unsung role in the world of politics. Craig and Professor Stone cover the early days of the United States, with the first Speaker of the House, Frederick Muhlenberg, whose gavel-wielding presence in Congress laid the foundation for this prestigious office. We'll delve into the dynamic personalities and pivotal moments that have defined the role throughout history. From Henry Clay's legendary tenure during the "Era of Good Feelings" to Sam Rayburn's unmatched leadership during turbulent times, we'll explore the key figures who have shaped the Speakership and, by extension, the nation itself. But it's not just about politics; the Speakers of the House have been at the forefront of major historical milestones. Discover how Joseph Gurney Cannon, with his iron grip on power, changed the rules of Congress, and how Tip O'Neill's legendary camaraderie with President Ronald Reagan transcended partisan politics. Our journey through history wouldn't be complete without exploring the groundbreaking moments led by groundbreaking individuals. What impact did Nancy Pelosi, the first female Speaker of the House, have during her tenure? How did John Boehner navigate the tumultuous waters of the Tea Party movement, and what can we learn from his leadership style? Join us as we examine the power, influence, and challenges faced by these remarkable men and women who have held the Speaker's gavel. "glimmers" are beacons of hope for our mental health. identifying your glimmers is possibly more important than identifying your triggers. having hope for the future is crucial in our mental health journey. let's talk about it!
I start with an analogy; The going thought is an adult should drink about a half gallon of water per day. But if you drink it all at once first thing in the morning, you'll feel bloated, you'll pee most of it out, and if you don't have anymore the rest of the day you'll be completely dehydrated by evening. You need to be drinking water throughout the day to stay well and hydrated. Now think of meditating, which at the core is an attempt to be present, center yourself, and bring about positive feelings. If you do your 5 minutes or 55 minutes in the morning, and then go about the grind for the rest of the day, you'll end up depleted. Instead, or in addition to this, new research shows the vast benefit of taking just 5 or 15 seconds here and there throughout the day, to “microdose mindfulness.” This is more than just thinking of something you're grateful for, but to stop and focus on something positive and really feel it, whether it's something you can actually see like a mountain or a flower, or it's something you close your eyes to envision. My guest is Jake Eagle, who along with Michael Amster recently released their book, THE POWER OF AWE: Overcome Burnout & Anxiety, Ease Chronic Pain, Find Clarity & Purpose—In Less Than 1 Minute Per Day, where they explain the why and how of this method for a five to fifteen-second, three-step process for “micro-dosing mindfulness,” where they discovered a clinically proven way to reduce inflammation, stress, loneliness, and burnout while improving overall well-being. Just hours before our recording, Jake sent me a scientific report that published earlier that morning. But along with this focus on awe and microdosing mindfulness, I also wanted Jake on the show because this was his response to my request to have him on the show - “I am 67, semi-retired, and wrestling with the reality that my old values no longer fit this stage of my life. I find semi-retirement to be quite a challenge and have not yet sorted myself out. I imagine a conversation with me may be potentially unsettling and raise more questions than it answers. Also, after having been a therapist for thirty years, I'm rather skeptical about many forms of therapy, because when I look at how people are doing—overall—I don't think the trajectory is very positive.” Stay tuned for a very deep and candid conversation. Clients often say, "OK, I understand the Principles: Mind, Consciousness and Thought. We create our own thinking and then see it as real via Consciousness because of the formless power of Mind. But I still don't feel any better." The Principles are words, metaphors that explain the logic of how human beings come to experience reality. "Learning" that intellectually does not in any way change people's experience. UNDERSTANDING the Principles at work arises from finding the deeply spiritual feelings of contentment and love. Then we REALIZE the Principles at work, and see for ourselves the power of creating our realities. That's why Sydney Banks always urges us to "listen for the feeling." Support the show

Who defines good? Us or God? In this sermon series “Somehow God is Good,” we will examine our definition of good and what the Scriptures teach us about God's version of good. Throughout this sermon, Pastor Dave focuses on Romans 8:28 according to our feelings and Scripture. When feelings become our determiner of truth, we are asking to be deceived. But when all of Scripture is our lens, good is determined by the one promising it, not receiving it.
This week, Clay Jenkinson has a conversation with Dr. Kevin Gutzman, Professor of History at Western Connecticut State University and author of The Jeffersonians: The Visionary Presidencies of Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe. Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe held the presidency between 1800 and 1824. These three close friends and Virginia neighbors pursued a common set of public holidays. They managed to extinguish the Federalist Party and by the time Monroe began his second term, a Boston newspaper called it The Era of Good Feelings. Clay and Dr. Gutzman explore the friendship and political collaboration between Jefferson and the greatest of his proteges, James Madison, and the ways in which poor Mr. Madison had to talk Jefferson off the ledge of some of his wilder ideas about America. Support the show by joining the 1776 Club or by donating to the Thomas Jefferson Hour, Inc. You can learn more about Clay's cultural tours and retreats at jeffersonhour.com/tours.
