A year and a half in the making, the time has finally come for Terminus to reconvene with the members of Mormegil, formed from the ashes of the late Cromlech. What ensues: a rollicking conversation covering Cromlech's "Ascent of Kings," songwriting techniques on an epic scale, the ambitions of continuing band Mormegil, and how the ghost of AFI haunts us all. Break out the mead, boys: it's time for another hangout with our favorite Canadians. 0:00:00 - Interview 1:43:15 - Cromlech - "Turambar (Master of Doom/By Doom Mastered) fr. We sit down with Kevin, Jacob, Brandon and Roman from Canadian epic doom/heavy metal act Cromlech and blackened death metal act Into Oblivion. We talk about Cromlech's new album Ascent of Kings, working with Hessian Firm, the band's musical and lyrical inspiration and their love for Conan the Barbarian. We go down a rabbit hole of talking all things craft brewing and Toronto cuisine. We also discuss Greek black metal, 90s Metallica, the negative reputation of Australian wildlife and more. Mom and dad are fighting again. It's been a tough time on the Terminus homestead with regards to scheduling, TDMG waylaid from recording earlier by the insidious trickery of budget airlines. Perhaps a cooling-off period was needed, though, before recording what is perhaps the most contentious episode in Terminus history. Blood must be shed. There is no other path forward. The cause of such discord within the family? The long-awaited return of Cromlech, epic doom purveyors with close ties to the podcast. "Ascent of Kings," a record a decade in the making, is without question one of the single most ambitious albums we've ever covered on the show. Epic in scope, scale, and concept, Cromlech pulls on threads of epic doom, traditional heavy metal, and those genres' progressive rock ancestors to make a record as unwieldy as it is grandiose. The question is simple: does Cromlech stick the landing, or is the sheer weight of compositional intricacy too much to bear? The battle lines are drawn and the positions the hosts take may surprise you, but one thing is clear once the dust has settled: "Ascent of Kings" will undoubtedly be a cult smash hit for a certain audience, and it is a record which necessitates tremendous discussion, whatever your position might be. Following this is another album with tremendous ambitions, albeit in a radically different direction: the debut full-length by Haxprocess, Jacksonville progressive death metal band and friends of The Death Metal Guy. Haxprocess sets its sights on recreating the style of late 90s progressive death metal, closely hewing to the structural rigor of deathrash while also heavily invested in the psych and prog rock of yesteryear. Through careful recreation of that era's stylistic features but with a genuine charge of youthful spirit and creativity, this is a record which could easily have emerged from '98, but with an energy and soul all its own. 0:00:00 - Intro 0:07:12 - Cromlech - Ascent of Kings (Hessian Firm) 1:51:24 - Virgin Steele - “Through the Ring of Fire” fr. A few months ago, out of the blue, Terminus received a bold and brazen email to the effect that we would interview Cromlech. What had we done to deserve this? Cromlech is the brother-band of Into Oblivion, whose Winds of Serpentine Ascension placed #1 on the Terminus Aggregate Top 10 for 2020. The Norns ordained our paths would cross, and so they did. Cromlech plays Epic Doom, forged from the same mythril as Solstice and Candlemass, but steeped in the dragon's blood of black and death. In this freewheeling juggernaut of an interview, The Black Metal Guy speaks with every member of Cromlech (except Kevin) about writing and recording their forthcoming record, Ascent of Kings (Hessian Firm), oppressing the peasantry of ironic retro-metal, and sacrificing to the shade of Robert E. Howard. Plus a whole bunch of other stuff. What emerges, over the course of the conversation, is a band whose swaggering pride is backed by serious artistry, loyal comradery, relentless shit-giving, and remorseless shitposting. This is as close as it gets to being in the practice room with Cromlech. Gird thy loins. 00:00 - Cromlech - Origin and destiny 10:41 - "Every week for seven years" - Writing and recording Ascent of Kings 16:30 - Crossbridge of the helix - Brandon, Jake, et. al. on the Cromlech rhythm section 21:27 - "Riff Tyrants" - Baron and Roman on collaborative guitar work 28:30 - The Ritual Airing of Grievances / a digression on Emperor / a further digression on the noble art of shitposting 36:42 - Spotlight on Kevin - Kevin as frontman and lyricist / Roman on collaborative vocals 40:36 - Cimmerian Codex - Conan The Barbarian, Celtic Frost, and some surprising links to classic 80s heavy metal 45:35 - Extreme heavy metal Pt.
Chapelizod only appears in documentary sources from around the early 13th century CE, but the archaeological remains of the area point to human activity in the Liffey Valley from the depths of Irish prehistory. The most significant – and earliest – archaeological site in the area of Chapelizod is the Knockmary Cist or Knockmary Cromlech, located at the summit of Knockmary Hill where it holds a commanding view of the village and surrounding landscape. You can find the site by entering the Phoenix Park through the turnstile at the top of Park Lane. Continuing straight ahead, you follow the narrow path to the top of the hill. Cross the road, and continue up the driveway. Go right along the hedge at the top, and you will come upon the remains of the cromlech (pictured above). Today, all that can be seen at this site on the small hill above Chapelizod are five upright stones supporting a large capstone. Once upon a time this assemblage of stones served as the rock chamber of the tomb – the remains of which are often known as a dolmen or cromlech. They would have been covered in a mound of earth; some accounts describe the original mound at Knockmary to have had a height of 15 feet and a diameter of 120 feet (Borlase, 1897).The largest stone measures roughly six foot six inches at its longest point. This capstone is made of calp, also known as “black quarry stone”. Later in time, this type of rock was commonly used for building works, and can be found incorporated into many of Dublin’s buildings; but this particular example is believed to have been dredged from the bed of the Liffey and brought up to this hill overlooking the valley (Borlase, 1897). It is supported by five smaller upright stones, creating a hollow void in which human remains and grave goods were deposited. The remains of three men were found inside this chamber when the mound was excavated in 1838. Numerous artefacts were also recovered: a small flint knife and a necklace of small sea-shells, perforated with small holes and strung together with a vegetal fibre that may have been seaweed. Four highly ornamented ceramic urns were also discovered in the mound, placed individually in their own small stone-lined chambers. These date to a later period in Irish prehistory – the Bronze Age. Whereas the bodies placed within the main cist at the center of the monument were buried whole, the urns contained the ashes of burned human bone. This represents a shift of not only technology, but also burial practices and perhaps religion between the Neolithic and the Bronze Age.The story of the Knockmary Cist’s discovery is closely tied to the emergence of archaeology from antiquarianism in the 19th century. Even up to the 1960s the site was associated with the semi-mythical earliest colonists of Ireland, the so-called Fir Bolgs:“The first people assumed to have dwelt in this country are the Firboigs, a pasture loving race, who inhabited Ireland about two thousand years ago. This deduction was made from the discovery of two Cromlechs in the nineteenth century, one on Knockmary Hill, overlooking Chapelizod, and the second in a sandpit near the village.” (McAsey, 1962, 37)Two centuries earlier the interpretations were a lot more fanciful, based on the theory that stones such as this served as the altars or temples of Druids. This idea was only challenged in the mid-1800s, when empirical evidence was being sought to discover the true function of these mysterious monuments. In 1837 a man named George Petrie pioneered this work at the archaeological landscape at Carrowmore, County Sligo – the largest cemetery of megalithic tombs in Ireland. The results of this were presented to the Royal Irish Academy in 1838; the same year that Thomas Larcom, then director of the Ordnance Survey of Ireland, wrote to Petrie notifying him of the newly discovered site in the Phoenix Park. Full details on the context surrounding Petrie’s work in Carrowmore, the excavation of the Knockmary cist and the shift towards archaeological methods in Ireland can be found in the excellent article by David McGuinness (2010).The remains of a second dolmen, originally located close to that on Knockmary Hill, can today be found in the tapir enclosure of Dublin Zoo.Further Reading:David McGuinness (2010) "Druids' altars, Carrowmore and the birth of Irish archaeology."
