Greg Brady (@GregBradyTO) focuses in on  the federal government stepping in, after less than a full day of a rail stoppage, ordering CN Rail and CPKC, and the union to binding arbitration. Everyone thought this was great news – and that meant the rails would start rolling – but, late Thursday – the Teamsters union issued a statement via X, disputing the government's decision – meaning the stoppage is still on. How long will it take to get the issue resolved? We ask John Corey, President of the Freight Management Association of Canada. Next,  Mike Van Soelen, a crisis communications expert with Oyster Group. We talked about CUPE Ontario President Fred Hahn – his union has called for his resignation due to an antisemitic social media post, but Hahn says he won't back down and What's the move here? How can Hahn win this battle? Lastly, Sean O'Shea, Global News Consumer and Investigative Reporter and we were talking about a devastating ending to the story of a missing Ontario real estate agent. A Markham woman named Yuk-Ying Anita Mui, 56, was reported missing by her family on August 9th. York Regional Police say the burned human remains that were found in Parry Sound have been identified as those from a missing Ontario real estate agent. On Oct. 8, 2023, one day after the Hamas terror attack on Israel, Fred Hahn—the president of Ontario's chapter of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE)—wrote a tweet on his social media account: “I'm thankful for the power of workers, the power of resistance around the globe. Because #Resistance is fruitful and no matter what some might say, #Resistance brings progress, and for that, I'm thankful.” It was a controversial post, due to the timing, though Hahn denies he was referring to Oct. 7—even though the longtime labour leader has a history of pro-Palestinian activism, and CUPE Ontario has long come under fire for years for harbouring antisemitic sentiments. For Carrie Silverberg, it was the last straw. The Vaughan, Ont. woman–who is a CUPE member as required by her job in a public school board–decided to take Hahn, and the union to court. The education worker is the lead plaintiff in a human rights complaint filed with Ontario's Human Rights Tribunal. Her case was also joined by nearly 80 other union members. For years, Silverberg has fought to change her union's anti-Israel policies; it makes her sick that CUPE uses her mandatory membership dues to support anti-Israel boycotts, calls to renew UNRWA funding, and standing with the recent encampments on university grounds. On today's episode of The CJN Daily, Carrie Silverberg joins to explain why she's in for a long legal fight. Reading Robert DiNiro's words about Donald Trump...I need to share. One of the greatest actors ever says I've spent a lot of time studying bad men. I've examined their characteristics, their mannerisms, the utter banality of their cruelty. Yet there's something different about Donald Trump. When I look at him, I don't see a bad man. Truly.  I see an evil one. Over the years, I've met gangsters here and there. This guy tries to be one, but he can't quite pull it off. There's such a thing as “honor among thieves.” Yes, even criminals usually have a sense of right and wrong. Whether they do the right thing or not is a different story — but — they have a moral code, however warped. Donald Trump does not. He's a wannabe tough guy with no morals or ethics. No sense of right or wrong. No regard for anyone but himself — not the people he was supposed to lead and protect, not the people he does business with, not the people who follow him, blindly and loyally, not even the people who consider themselves his “friends.” He has contempt for all of them. Confirmed by the Ministry of Defence in Israel. Israeli children we don't yet know precisely how many, were handcuffed, tortured and then slaughtered, some burned alive by Hamas terrorists. Question: what does one say when a father finds his 8 year old daughter, murdered by Hamas and is relieved to know she wasn't taken hostage by Hamas, to Gaza. That's how eight year old Emily's father feels about having lost Emily to terrorism  For the last few years I have focused on how many on the right have polluted their minds - lost their way. Little did I know that one day Hamas would be burning & beheading Jewish children. Many on the left choose not to respond with empathy & indignation. They prefer Antisemitism. I don't have to tell them who they are. And then there are the enablers of Hamas propaganda, like the leader of CUPE Ontario. I'm looking at you - ashamed of you and your enthusiastic willingness to be a useful idiot for Hamas by playing this sophomoric game where ends justify means, when they just don't.  Germany's Chancellor Olaf Scholz says “At this moment, there is only one place for Germany — the place at Israel's side. Our own history, our responsibility arising from the Holocaust, makes it a perpetual task for us to stand up for the security of the State of Israel.” Thank you very much German Chancellor Scholz. Dankeschön

This week on rabble radio, editor Nick Seebruch sits down with CUPE Ontario president Fred Hahn to discuss the recent momentum in the labour movement in Canada.  Hahn last joined rabble radio in November last year when CUPE Ontario's negotiations with the Doug Ford government were stalling. CUPE Ontario was demanding better wages, more support services – and the Ford government wasn't budging. Instead, Ford invoked the notwithstanding clause to force a contract on the union and effectively wipe away its bargaining rights.  In the days that followed Hahn's interview on rabble radio, CUPE Ontario's 55,000 education workers as well as some local chapters of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation (OSSTF) and the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO) all went on strike. In the end, Ford blinked, and labour won. Today, Hahn reflects on the impact of this historic labour action from last November, why it's so important for the labour movement to be at the forefront of social justice issues, and what CUPE Ontario is focused on today.  If you like the show please consider subscribing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you find your podcasts. If it's the end of April, then it's time for the Workers' Day of Mourning. For 40 years, workers across the country have stopped to remember those who lost their lives on the job and to inspire workers to fight to prevent further tragedies. It's widely considered a rare opportunity to make a point that only sometimes penetrates our common narrative: Are all workplaces as healthy and safe as they could be, and are they equally safe for everyone? According to the WSIB Ontario, the number one workplace injury in 2021 and 2022 was sprains and strains. The second? COVID-19. CUPE Ontario notes that workers are “facing increased pressure to ‘get back to normal'”, and interestingly, workers have gotten “back to normal” in one very specific and disappointing way according to the WSIB... There were 255,318 claims in 2022, which is about 2,000 short of the 10-year high in 2019, right before the start of COVID. In the wake of the pandemic, which despite what you may have heard is still not technically over, the pressure on workers, and the pressure to look out for their own health and safety, is immense. Staffing pressures are forcing workers to put in more hours, and increased workloads make it harder to focus on the so-called little things, like whether the work your doing is dangerous, or even if you're qualified to do it. And what ever happened to 10 sick days? This week, we will examine that and other questions with the President of CUPE Ontario Fred Hahn, and co-chair of CUPE's Health and Safety Committee Brittany Nesbitt. They will talk about their personal thoughts on this year's Day of Mourning, what health and safety issues they're seeing right now, and the ongoing health and safety impacts from COVID-19. Plus, they will talk about empowering workers to look out for their rights and their concerns about the relaxing of child labour laws in some U.S. states. So let's talk health and safety on this week's edition of the Guelph Politicast! The Workers' Day of Mourning is this Friday April 28. The Guelph commemoration hosted by the Guelph & District Labour Council takes place at Goldie Mill Park at 5:30 pm with local labour historian Bonnie Durtnall as the special guest speaker. Well folks, another year has come and gone!  As we reflect on the year that's passed, we here at rabble radio are remembering some of our favourite interview moments on the show this year. We had so many wonderful guests — ranging from activists, to professors, to filmmakers, economists, healthcare workers, poets and writers — the list goes on.  In today's episode, we'll be sharing a few of our personal favourite interview clips of this year. (Which was no easy task for a 28 minute show, I'll tell you that!)  Here are some of our top rabble radio episodes of the year…  In February of this year, Paul Taylor, executive director of FoodShare Toronto and a lifelong anti-poverty activist joined rabble radio to speak with Libby Davies about the impact the pandemic had on FoodShare. And how activists should allow for room for fatigue and frustration during difficult times.  No one felt the COVID-19 pandemic harder than our health care workers in Canada. In early 2022, rabble partnered with the Canadian Federation of Nurses' Unions. Together, we developed the Nurses' Voices: Stories of courage and determination in the face of COVID-19 book. It highlights over 20 interviews from health care professionals across Canada. The book illustrates how the pandemic upended nurses' lives – and how, despite it all, their commitment to their patients remained unwavering. On June 24, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. This piece of legislation made abortion access a federal right in the United States. The decision sent a shockwave through the States which was felt in Canada. That week, Stephen Wentzell interviewed writer and registered nurse Martha Paynter for rabble radio. They spoke about the misconceptions people have about access to abortion in Canada and the other threats facing reproductive justice in the country.  As part of rabble's Boiling Point series, Stephen Wentzell spoke to Dr. Melissa Lem, to talk about how recent extreme weather events are affecting the physical and mental health of Canadians.  Also a part of our Boiling Point series, Jillian Piper spoke to Breanne Lavallee-Heckert, the research manager at Indigenous Climate Action. Breanne explained the work she does at the organization, and the importance of Indigenous stewardship in regard to the climate crisis.  The labour movement in Canada grabbed the attention of the nation in late autumn this year, when CUPE Ontario went to war with Premier Doug Ford's Progressive Conservative government over fair wages and  for education support workers. In November, CUPE Ontario President Fred Hahn joined rabble radio to speak with Nick Seebruch about what was at stake in this labour dispute. Another huge story of 2022, was, of course, rising inflation. In November, economist Jim Stanford sat down with editor Nick Seebruch to discuss the state of Canada's economy. The two also talked about how progressive organizations, activists, and groups must band together as we move forward into what's sure to be a tough year economically and politically.  Did we miss a favourite interview of yours from 2022? Let us know in the comments below!  Thank you for listening to rabble radio  Our show would not be possible without listeners like you. So thank you!  From all of us here at rabble, we want to wish you and your communities a safe and happy new year!  If you're in the giving mood and would like to support our show today, please visit rabble.ca/donate. Has the Ford government declared a class war? Why Ontario education workers are taking to the streets

rabble radio

This week on rabble radio, we're sharing an interview between CUPE Ontario President Fred Hahn and rabble editor Nick Seebruch. The two spoke on Nov. 2 to explain what's at stake in the labour dispute in Ontario.  At the time of this episode's posting, CUPE has announced that it will strike on Friday, Nov. 4 and OPSEU – the Ontario Public Services Employees Union – says its 8000 education workers will join them. The Ontario Federation of Labour has also taken to social media to share their support for CUPE.  But how did we get here?  To recap, CUPE Ontario has been negotiating with the Ford government, trying to secure better pay for its educational support workers. As Marc Belanger explained on a special RadioLabour episode this week, when inflation is taken into account, the lowest paid educational worker in Ontario has seen their wages effectively cut by 11 per cent since 2012.  CUPE has been seeking a wage increase of $3.25 per hour in each year of a three year collective agreement.  On Sunday, October 30th, 97% of CUPE Ontario's 55,000 education workers voted to give the Ford government the legally necessary five day notice of a potential provincial-wide strike should their wage demands not be met.  Despite a long week at the bargaining table, the Ford government was not to be persuaded.  On Thursday evening, the Ford government passed Bill 28 which imposes a new work contract on educational support workers with a pay increase of 2.5 per cent, well below the rate of inflation.  Ford invoked the Constitution's notwithstanding clause which allows the provincial government to override part of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and bypass the union's right to bargain and strike. The use of the notwithstanding clause means that Bill 28 cannot be challenged in court. In doing so, Judy Rebick says the Ford government has effectively called a “class war against unions.” CUPE president Laura Walton has pledged that their members will strike on Friday, November 4 and that the strike will continue "for as long as it takes." The Ontario Federation of Labour took to social media saying: “Doug Ford and Stephen Lecce have declared war on 1 million union members, 7 milllion workers, 14 million Ontarians. Get ready to fight.”  This is a developing story. Join in the conversation on our discussion board, babble.   Photo: Courtesy of CUPE  If you like the show please consider subscribing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you find your podcasts.
