Each episode we bring you the best music of all genres from throughout the world, and this week we'll be speaking with an old friend of the show - singer, songwriter Roger Silverberg. Roger has long been a fixture on the Long Island music scene for years - writing carefully crafted, thought-provoking songs that he has performed and recorded both on his own, and with some of the best musicians on Long Island. He's also recently added another dimension to his musical palette as a member of the group Lipstick, a female fronted 80s influenced pop and rock band, who will be performing at Finley's of Greene Street in Huntington, NY on October 5th. The main event remains Rogers own music, which he'll be performing with a group of excellent musicians on December 13th at Bartini Bar in Babylon, NY. It wasn't that Kroll enjoyed watching the traitors broken in body and spirit. But why did they keep insisting they were innocent before—The Inquisitor. By Robert Silverberg, that's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.Science Fiction Grand Master Robert Silverberg has been on the podcast many times with The Mystery of Deneb IV, Never Trust a Thief, Planet of the Angry Giants, Monsters that Once Were Men and several others. He returns today with a short story from December 1956 that appeared in Imagination Stories of Science and Fantasy. We often hear from listeners who say they don't understand why authors use pen names. This issue is a great example. Robert Silverberg actually wrote three stories that appeared in this issue. No magazine editor wanted one author to appear multiple times in a single magazine, readers might not like it. So the solution was simple, use a different name, or in this case names. The Alien Dies at Dawn, which you will hear on the podcast in the not too distant future, was credited to Alexander Blade but was written by Silverberg, as was Lair of the Dragonbird. On page 106 of the December 1956 of Imagination Stories of Science and Fantasy we will find today's story, The Inquisitor By Robert Silverberg…Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, Orthedrin, maxiton and glutamic acid—they were the prescription that made him king of his world! "We always recommend that people do not memorize their presentations verbatim. That results in just acting a little bit too robotic. Your audience can tell, and that's just not the best way to go." - Eric SilverbergThis week, Grant sat down with Eli and Eric, some of our friends from Speaker Labs (not to be confused with The Speaker Lab). Eli and Eric help speakers master the four pillars of becoming a world class speaker — content, delivery, visuals, and mindset — so that they can become exceptional communicators."When you share your idea, even if it's a known idea in the world, but you share it your way through your stories, your experiences, your unique creative analogies and metaphors, and interesting ways to package that idea, the audience may not have heard it your way, and that allows you to feel confident, to show up and say, I may tell you something you already know, but I'm certainly going to tell it to you in a way that you haven't heard it before, because I'm telling it to you my unique way." - Eli GladstoneIn this episode we cover: 05:12 How Eli and Eric built this business06:21 What Speaker Labs does 10:28 The difference in good and great speakers 15:02 What makes a great presentation18:41 How to improve confidence as a speaker 21:53 Understanding the E's of engagement23:52 How to read the audience and develop a knack for making last minute tweaks 26:59 Let's talk about slides and visual aids28:51 How to think about slides + some tips and tricks 34:06 The importance of mindset in public speaking 38:05 How to confront and overcome fears39:11 Tips to overcome impostor syndrome as a speaker 42:32 The most important question to ask yourself about your message"Eli came up with an amazing analogy once that has to do with the GPS systems. You know, when you're in your car and you're using waze or Google Maps or whatever, and then there's a voice that speaks to you, and they tell you what to do. They tell you, in 400, you know, or in 4 miles, turn left, and in 3 miles, turn right. But here's what the GPS doesn't do. The GPS does not say, turn left, go straight, go straight, go straight, go straight, go straight, go straight, go straight, go straight, go straight, turn right, go straight, go straight, go straight, go straight. That's way too much, right?" - Eric Silverberg "I try to get them to think about playing with the levels of altitude of that idea. You may not change your message, this is your message. But once you understand the most abstracted version of that idea, you now understand the language that could speak to the most people." - Eli Gladstone Episode Resources:Connect with the Speaker LabsFollow Speaker Labs on InstagramFollow Speaker Labs on LinkedInGet Free Speaker ResourcesBook a Call with The Speaker LabCalculate Your Speaking FeeJoin The Speaker Lab Community on FacebookSubscribe on Apple PodcastsSubscribe on SpotifySee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Suing her CUPE union over systemic antisemitism

On Oct. 8, 2023, one day after the Hamas terror attack on Israel, Fred Hahn—the president of Ontario's chapter of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE)—wrote a tweet on his social media account: “I'm thankful for the power of workers, the power of resistance around the globe. Because #Resistance is fruitful and no matter what some might say, #Resistance brings progress, and for that, I'm thankful.” It was a controversial post, due to the timing, though Hahn denies he was referring to Oct. 7—even though the longtime labour leader has a history of pro-Palestinian activism, and CUPE Ontario has long come under fire for years for harbouring antisemitic sentiments. For Carrie Silverberg, it was the last straw. The Vaughan, Ont. woman–who is a CUPE member as required by her job in a public school board–decided to take Hahn, and the union to court. The education worker is the lead plaintiff in a human rights complaint filed with Ontario's Human Rights Tribunal. Her case was also joined by nearly 80 other union members. For years, Silverberg has fought to change her union's anti-Israel policies; it makes her sick that CUPE uses her mandatory membership dues to support anti-Israel boycotts, calls to renew UNRWA funding, and standing with the recent encampments on university grounds. On today's episode of The CJN Daily, Carrie Silverberg joins to explain why she's in for a long legal fight. What we talked about: Read more about CUPE Ontario's adoption of a pro-Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions policy in 2006, in The CJN Learn about the time a CUPE local at the University of Toronto hosted a speaker who had been ordered to be deported from Canada because of his ties to the PFLP terrorist organization, in The CJN CUPE members supported and participated in the U of T encampment in May, in The CJN.  **Credits: ** The CJN Daily is written and hosted by Ellin Bessner (@ebessner on Twitter). But what about their staffs, and what does that mean for national security? This week, Margaret Taylor sat down with seemingly unlikely partners: Luke Murry, National Security Advisor to Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, and Daniel Silverberg, National Security Advisor to Democratic House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer. They spoke about security issues facing this Congress, what staffers do on a day-to-day basis, and how the two of them actually work together.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. Robert Silverberg, born in Brooklyn, New York, on January 15, 1935, is a highly esteemed author known for his significant contributions to the world of speculative fiction. With a career spanning several decades, Silverberg's journey into the literary world began in his early teenage years when he started submitting stories to science fiction magazines. He graduated from Columbia University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature in 1956, all while crafting stories that would earn him recognition as the "best new writer" with his first Hugo Award that same year. Notably, Silverberg's prolific output during the 1950s and 1960s, with an average of five published stories per month, established him as a prominent figure in the genre. However, in the late 1950s, Silverberg diversified his writing efforts to other genres due to changes in the science fiction market. This period saw him prolifically producing works under various pseudonyms, including a substantial collection of erotic novels published as "Don Elliott." His transition to exploring more literary themes began in the 1960s, a shift marked by his association with the "New Wave" movement and a renewed focus on character development and social depth. Later in his life, after experiencing personal challenges, he retired from writing in 1975 but returned with renewed vigor in 1980 with the acclaimed "Lord Valentine's Castle." In 2005, he received the prestigious title of SFWA Grand Master from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, cementing his legacy in the genre.During this period, Silverberg produced a string of critically acclaimed novels, including "To Open the Sky," "Downward to the Earth," "To Live Again," "The World Inside," and "Dying Inside." These works showcased his ability to merge profound themes with gripping narratives and garnered him multiple Hugo and Nebula Award nominations and wins. His return to writing in 1980 with "Lord Valentine's Castle" marked the beginning of the beloved Majipoor series, known for its intricate world-building and rich character development.New Patreon RequestBuzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! Okay maybe I went a bit too far looking for words that started with S. So sorry. In the early 1950s, Robert Silverberg was a young science fiction fan who was eager to break into the field as a writer. He started submitting stories to various magazines but was repeatedly rejected.Undeterred, Silverberg wrote a story called "Gorgon Planet" and it appeared in “Nebula”, Scotland's first science fiction magazine under the name Bob Silverberg in 1954. It was the first of more than 600 paid short stories. As was the case with many sci-fi stories back then, "Gorgon Planet" appeared again. It was published in “Super-Science Fiction” magazine 4 ½ years later with the title “The Fight With The Gorgon.” Same story, different title.Silverberg's career took off in 1956 when he sold more than 50 short stories.Today's story comes from Super-Science Fiction Magazine in August 1959. The story is credited to one of Silverberg's pen names, Eric Rodman. Our story can be found on page 18, Monsters That Once Were Men by Robert Silverberg …Next week on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast…The men of the Norgan System had a tough decision to make concerning the planet in A93. When Cory Silverberg was 17 years old growing up in Canada, there simply weren't many resources available for a teenager confused about gender. But Silverberg - who uses they pronouns, and doesn't identify as a man - found surprising solace in the form of a retail job at a local sex shop, and discovered a rare super power that would shape their life. “Other people's sex stuff didn't freak me out,” Silverberg says, “and I knew how to show that it didn't freak me out.” Decades later Silverberg is a celebrated sex educator, public speaker, and the author of three acclaimed books aimed at teaching kids how to talk about sex and gender, and how to think of sex as a path to understanding their place in the world. On this episode of Paternal, Silverberg discusses when to talk to kids about sex and gender, why some of those conversations can be triggering for parents, and why kids engaged in these candid conversations wait longer to have sex. Here is that rare voice that can talk about the hardest things kids go through in ways that are thoughtful, lighthearted and always respectful of their intelligence." Ali and Cory talk about all of it, including how You Know, Sex is the first thoroughly modern sex education book for every body, covering not only the big three of puberty—hormones, reproduction, and development—but also power, pleasure, and how to be a decent human being. How do you teach your child about sex? It's a perennial question that has spawned hundreds of illustrated books meant to demystify sexual intercourse. But for the Canadian author Cory Silverberg, there was something lacking. Silverberg, who uses they/them pronouns, felt that books on sex aimed at children often omitted mention of intimacy in the context of disability or gender nonconformity. And so they set about making a book of their own. They wanted to tell a story of how babies are made that would apply to all kinds of children, whether they were conceived the traditional way or through reproductive technologies, whether they live with adoptive or biological parents, and no matter their family configuration. The book critic Elaine Blair, who had also felt that children's literature on sex was a little thin on inclusivity, recalls being drawn in by the fact that Silverberg's “Sex is a Funny Word” is one of few children's books that contend with the fact that children encounter representations of sexuality in the media.Ms. Blair met up with Silverberg in Houston to understand the germ of the idea and the editorial process of delivering the book, from conception to print. This story was written by Elaine Blair and recorded by Audm.
