Host Jesse Jackson kicks off Pride in Bruce Month on Set Lusting Bruce with guest Niko Stratis, a Toronto-based writer originally from Canada's Yukon. Niko describes growing up in a music- and book-filled home, later leaving construction work after coming out as trans, and building a writing career through online essays, including an early op-ed that prompted an attempted libel threat. Niko recounts discovering Bruce Springsteen later in life—initially misreading Born in the U.S.A.—and connecting deeply to Bruce's earnestness, storytelling, and songs like “Dancing in the Dark,” “Thunder Road,” “Drive All Night,” and Nebraska tracks. This week's data offered a mixed but telling picture of the American economy, spanning the Beige Book, fresh readings on inflation and housing, and a further climb in equity markets. Housing, often a bellwether of cyclical momentum, continued to soften. Existing home sales fell short of expectations, while the Housing Market Index also declined, underscoring waning confidence among builders. Inflation, as measured by the Producer Price Index, surprised to the downside on the headline figure, though recent month over month gains suggest underlying pressures remain uncomfortably firm. The Beige Book, drawing on regional Federal Reserve surveys, described an economy marked by subdued growth, rising inflation expectations, and elevated uncertainty linked in part to the war in Iran. Against this backdrop, equity markets have staged a relief rally, pushing major indices to fresh highs. Yet the character of the advance is notable. Unlike earlier phases of recovery, leadership has not come from cyclically sensitive or higher risk assets, but from companies perceived as higher quality and more resilient, often benefiting from structural tail winds. The shift points to a market that is advancing, but with caution, as investors seek shelter even while bidding prices higher, betraying a lingering unease about the durability of the expansion and the path ahead.

How did Bruce become The Boss, and what did it cost him to get there? Laura Barton explores the extraordinary life story of Bruce Springsteen, taking a front-row seat at five important gigs to reveal the life behind the legend.Bruce's story continues in rural Holmdel, New Jersey, alone with a four-track tape recorder. He goes back into his childhood, drives the streets of his early years, searching for answers. Looking for meaning. The seminal album, Nebraska, is what comes out. What happens next is an unravelling. And then a rebuilding. The Bruce who returns is unrecognisable. "He's got muscles now. Does that mean we have to get muscles now?!" - Warren Zanes. The album Born In The USA, with the anthemic album track and hit single Dancing In The Dark, takes Bruce stratospheric. In October, 1985, after two years and 156 shows, the Born In The USA tour comes to a close at the Coliseum Los Angeles. Four sold out nights of 80,000 people. The final night is one of melancholy and of joy. And a foreboding of change to come. ~~~“I'm here tonight to provide proof of life to that ever elusive, never completely believable, particularly these days, us. That's my magic trick.”In Legend: The Bruce Springsteen Story, we uncover the magic trick to discover how a scrawny, long-haired introvert from small-town New Jersey became the iconic, muscular, and oft-misunderstood rock star of the 1980s, to the eloquent elder statesmen he is now. What can his story tell us about America today? In each episode, Laura takes us to the front row of a live performance that reveals a different side of The Boss, and hears him across the decades in his own words from the archive. We'll also hear from fellow worshippers in the Church of Springsteen, and disciples from the E Street Band, including drummer Max Weinberg, tributes from those influenced by Bruce, such as Bryce Dessner from The National, as well as Freehold town historian Kevin Coyne and music critics and biographers such as Richard Williams, Eric Alterman, Steven Hyden, Warren Zanes and Diane H. In the sixth episode of “Notes on a Native Son,” writer Caryl Phillips shares the experience of getting to know James Baldwin beyond the pages of his work. Phillips not only respected Baldwin as a writer, but regarded him as a friend and perhaps a mentor, too. Phillips was born on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts, and moved to Leeds, in northern England, when he was just 4 months old. It was as a student at Oxford where he first encountered the work of Baldwin. He tells host Razia Iqbal that meeting Baldwin was the first time he'd ever met a writer, something he knew he wanted to be.Caryl Phillips was on the 1993 Granta list of Best of Young British Writers. His literary awards include Britain's oldest literary award, the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, for “Crossing the River,” which was also shortlisted for the 1993 Booker Prize. “A Distant Shore" was longlisted for the 2003 Booker Prize, and won the 2004 Commonwealth Writers Prize. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and the Royal Society of the Arts, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He currently teaches English at Yale University. Happy 4th Of July! We're celebrating ironically with Born In The U.S.A., the legendary seventh studio album by the pride of New Jersey, the Boss himself! The history books forgot about the 1944 radio adaptation of Wake Up and Live, a bizarre and disastrous production in which a fascist self-help book adapted into a comedy movie about duelling radio shows is adapted back into a radio show in which several other radio shows exist within the world of this radio show, and characters with real people playing themselves are altered back into fictional characters again. And THIS was Sinatra's second ever acting role of any kind, fresh off the back of the similary convoluted film Higher and Higher. On top of that, this was also the first time he recorded both "Embraceable You" and "Dancing in the Dark" and he delivers show-stopping performances of both, truly making this a historic moment in time. Yet all of this has essentially gone undocumented. This week on SUDDENLY, you'll hear the original radio broadcast in full as we try to make sense of what this all is - and we're not even done with Wake Up and Live yet. contact: suddenlypod at gmail dot com website: suddenlypod.gay donate: ko-fi.com/suddenlypod
When Rose finds a man who makes her heart sing and her feet swing, she's as giddy as a school girl. Or maybe I should say as giddy as a college student - because her new beau Miles is a college professor! As impressive as that is, the intelligence difference has Rose feeling self-conscious and unlovable. Even when Blanche and Dorothy try to help, it doesn't and Rose gives up on finding love. It will take persistence from Miles and support from her friends for Rose to finally understand how unique and lovable she really is. So join us as we talk Shostakovich, Miles, and the disappearance of Glen Miller in today's episode, Dancing In The Dark.
Everyone's in the mood for love but nobody seems to be able to make a connection in this week's episode, “Dancing in the Dark,” with Angela longing for a kiss from Jordan, Patty hoping Graham will sweep her off her feet, and Brian hoping against hope to get some extra credit (and not just the academic kind). I'll be talking to the delightful Michael Hobbes (Maintenance Phase, If Books Could Kill, You're Wrong About), a first-time viewer whose opinion of the show is starting to change; and also the delightful Terrence Moss, who knows everything there is to know about television and has a few critiques of my fashion choices. And as always, James is here to share his insights — including a shocking comparison of My So-Called Life to the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion and the Christopher Isherwood novel on which Cabaret is based. I promise it'll all make sense.Join me on Patreon at patreon.com/mattbaume.Music by Caleb Martin - www.MartinMusicMedia.com
