His acclaimed television productions include Sherwood and Quiz, based on the story of the so-called coughing Major Charles Ingram who was found guilty of cheating on the game show Who Wants to be a Millionaire? James was born in Kirkby-in-Ashfield in Nottinghamshire in 1982. He was a shy boy who was encouraged to perform in school plays by his teachers. He went on to study drama at Hull University where he wrote his first play Coal Not Dole! He took the play to the Edinburgh fringe and the reception it received from audiences encouraged him to carry on writing.After graduating he worked as a stage doorkeeper at the Theatre Royal in Nottingham where one of his personal highlights was looking after Danny La Rue, the star of the Christmas panto. His first London premiere came in 2005 at the Finborough Theatre in London with Albert's Boy, which explored the arguments for and against nuclear weapons. In 2020 James was awarded an OBE for services to drama and young people in British theatre. Along the way he worked with artists such as The Andrews Sisters, Petula Clarke, Tommy Cooper, Danny La Rue and Tessie O'Shea. He moved to Australia in 1963 and soon found himself employed as a male dancer in the famous Les Girls show in King's Cross, Sydney. Working with the Drag Artistes of the day ignited Stan's boyhood infatuation and he quickly joined the girls with his own blend of glamour and comedy. So much so that he was eventually appointed MC of the iconic revue. An extended season with the show followed at The Ritz, in St Kilda, Melbourne. It has been a career in heels since, as Stan has delighted, confused and amused audiences around the globe. He has a fascinating story and an engaging take on life. At 17 she won Talentville USA, a nationwide talent contest sponsored by Coca Cola - the equivalent today to America's/Britain's Got Talent - culminating in finals in New York, but she chose instead to go to Indiana University to study for a degree in music before joining the Metropolitan Opera National Company and subsequently touring all over the United States and Canada. However, her love for Musical Theatre totally overwhelmed that of her love for opera…and a very happy career in musicals has followed. She arrived in London in 1971 to star as Magnolia in SHOW BOAT with Dame Cleo Laine at the Adelphi Theatre - the show was such a smash-hit that it ran for a then-record 2 years and 3 months. The production was recorded and presented on the Tony Awards as the best International production of that season. Lorna fell in love with London, staying in the UK to star in many musicals (SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM, HELLO DOLLY! RICK KENT joins me in The Engine Room to discuss his musical journey which began in Adelaide during the 60s Rock 'N' Roll days with The Firebirds who became The Vibrants. The Vibrants moved to Melbourne in 1966, and had several charting hits, "Something About You, Baby", "My Prayer", "Don't Let Your Left Hand Know", and "How Sweet It Is". After leaving the band Rick went on to run his own music schools in Perth, The Perth Jingle Workshop. He then lived in England for two years, and joined popular London band "The Basic Truth". The highlight of his time in England was a world tour with The Osmond Bros, which culminated in a concert at Madison Square Gardens in New York. Rick returned to Australia in the mid seventies and became involved in the recording side of music, setting up a studio in Adelaide with mobile recording facilities, while playing in a band six nights a week. Some of the artists he recorded during this period were Christie Allen and Men at Work. Rick also did ads for radio and TV, and film scores for the South Australian Film Corp. Rick worked with Lisa Edwards in a band called "Night Shift", the support band for the great Roy Orbison at the Festival Theatre. Rick moved back to Melbourne with singer Lisa Edwards under his management, Lisa later went on to join the Farnham Band. He then spent 2 years with the Channel 9 Band, Brisbane, on the popular "Conway Country" in the early 80's. During this time he also worked major Leagues Clubs and RSL's on the Gold Coast with various other bands. By the middle of the eighties and through most of the nineties, Rick was located in the Byron Bay area, where he taught drums, both privately and in local schools, played with various bands from the area, and worked on several recording projects in different studios, including Big Toe, Music Farm, Star Sound, Ch9, and Suite 16. Rick has played rock, jazz, country, showroom cabaret, backing many famous Australian and International acts including: Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Roy Orbison, Osmond Bros, Del Shannon, Andy Stewart, and Danny La Rue. Rick keeps his hand in playing with country rock band "Deep Creek", and showband "Forever Everly", as well as freelancing with various other acts. The Engine Room Guest: Laurie Kennedy, has been mentioned in many of my previous interviews due to him having been an in-demand drum teacher and player in South Australia for 40 years. His playing career began in NSW when families gathered together and listened to music shows, drama serials, light entertainment and quiz programs on the radio, Rock 'n' roll was popular in dance halls, and Jazz and Coffee Lounges were The Scene! He has worked with the 'who's who' of the entertainment industry, working in Television, Radio, Musical Theatre, Cabaret, Jazz, Rock, and Orchestral. He has had a truly remarkable musical journey and it was an honour to have him share his story with me. If you enjoy historical stories about the Australian Music Industry, then this episode is definitely for you! The first professional band that he joined was the 'Warren LeRoy Trio', playing at the El Rocco followed by the 'Macambo Quartet' who were very popular at the Macambo Coffee Lounge, where they had a stint of around 4 years during the early 1960s. Late in 1965 he joined his one and only Pop Group called The Grape Escape with Brian Godden, Chris Bonett, and singer/songwriter Norma Stoneman. The Grape Escape signed to RCA Records and released a couple of singles with ''The Easy Life'' (Feb 25th 1967) being the most successful, he returned to NSW when the band called it a day. Laurie worked as a studio drummer at TCN-9 on the Desmond Tester Children's Television show the 'Channel 9- Pins', prior to moving to Adelaide in 1968. In Adelaide he played with the Borodin Quartet at the Paprika Nightclub for 5 years, the band worked 6 nights a week, 7 hours a night! His first teaching job was at Pulteney Grammar School, followed by Blackfriars Priory School, and St Peter's College. In addition, Laurie was an in-demand lecturer in drum, percussion, and rhythm at the Elder Conservatorium, University of Adelaide for 32 years, and lecturer at Noarlunga TAFE for 10 years. He wrote ‘A Guide to Exploring Rhythm - All Instruments and Voice', among other teaching materials. Laurie lived, played and taught in Adelaide for half his lifetime, returning to live in NSW to be closer to his sons when he retired. He has accompanied international Jazz and Variety Artists, did many concerts tours and recordings with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, as well as concerts with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. Recorded with Don Burroughs, James Morrison, George Golla, Errol Buddle, Ted Nettelbeck, Schmoe (Sylvan Elhay), Andy Sugg, and many others. Backing for local variety acts such as Barry Crocker, Julie Anthony, Ricky May, Glenn Shorrock, Kamal, Judith Durham, and many more. International variety artists include Harry Secombe, Platters, Eartha Kitt, Dick Emery, Cilla Black, Ronnie Corbett, Danny La Rue, and so many more that It is impossible for me to list them all. In today’s episode I am speaking to Candy Warhol. Born and raised in Cork, Candy has been one of Ireland's leading drag acts for a decade and is a descendant of Irish drag royalty Danny La Rue. Making her mark in the UK, Candy is currently the host of Dragony Aunts - The Series and Dragony Aunts - The Podcast, both on Comedy Central UK. She is also the host and producer of Friends Of Dorothy podcast which is currently climbing the charts worldwide and boasts a glittering lineup that includes Rose McGowan, Sandra Bernhard, The Veronicas and the an array of Drag Race winners.  In 2019 Candy was selected by the Irish embassy in Poland to lead a parade of 50,000 at Warsaw Pride and later appeared in Vogue Poland. Candy and I had the most wonderful, moving and insightful conversation about what it was like for her growing up in Ireland struggling with her sexuality, school and family expectations, who had rarely been exposed to the struggles Candy was having to try and overcome and navigate. Clive Rowe is an actor who has played the pantomime dame at the Hackney Empire on many occasions. In 2010 he appeared as Dame Daisy in Jack and the Beanstalk. In 1997 he won an Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for Guys and Dolls. He is playing King Darius in The Light Princess at The National Theatre. Jo Brand is a BAFTA-winning comedian, actor and writer. She is appearing in her first pantomime as the Genie of the Ring in Aladdin. A former psychiatric nurse, she made her name as a stand-up comic and is a regular panel member on QI and occasional presenter of Have I Got News for You. Aladdin is at New Wimbledon Theatre. Henry Winkler OBE is an American actor, director and children's author, best known for playing The Fonz in the television series Happy Days. He is currently reprising his role as Captain Hook in Peter Pan at Richmond Theatre. His Hank Zipzer stories focus on a 10-year-old boy with dyslexia and are based on his own experiences. Peter Pan is at Richmond Theatre. Richard Mawbey is a wig designer who produces a wide range of work for pantomime, theatre, television and film. His commissions range from Lily Savage as Widow Twankey to the cast of From Here to Eternity. He spent 10 years on the road with the legendary Danny La Rue as his hairdresser and wig designer. Richard has just produced 35 wigs for a production of White Christmas at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre. Producer: Paula McGinley.
