At 36 years old Roger realized he no longer wanted to be a senior executive of a fortune 500 company so he resigned and pursued a career in wildlife filmmaking.   Roger Horrocks is a wildlife cinematographer with 15 years of experience filming behavioural sequences for the BBC, Netflix, Disney and National Geographic. Roger has worked from the frozen poles to the tropical equator and is experienced in documenting both open-water and benthic-based stories and behaviours. Roger developed his underwater field craft as a competitive spear fisherman while studying for an Honours Degree from the University of Natal in South Africa. He continued to dive while working in the digital and financial services sectors, and furthered his management training at the UCT Graduate School of Business and the London Business School. In 2007 he began working for the BBC Natural History on the Nature's Great Events series directed by Hugh Pearson, and began his apprenticeship under cameramen Didier Noirot and Doug Anderson. During this period he narrated and co-directed three documentaries with Craig and Damon Foster. The first of these "Into the Dragon's Lair", was nominated for an Emmy for best Cinematography in 2010, and the sequel, 'Touching the Dragon" was selected as one of the feature shows for National Geographic's 125th centenary year celebrations. Roger was also nominated for Best Narration at Jackson Hole . In 2011 he shot his first blue chip sequence for John Downer's "Earthflight", for producer Rob Pilley. This was followed by a long term assignment from John Downer to film bottle-nose dolphins for the "Spy in the Pod" series which aired on BBC One in 2013, and two sequences on the BBC Atlantic series for producer Ted Giffords 2010. In 2015 and 2016 he spent 110 days filming for Silverback Films on Disneynature's "Blue", for director Keith Scholey and worked as a second unit DOP on the National Geographic "Into the Okavango" feature directed by Neil Gelinas. In 2017 Roger was appointed as the underwater DOP on the National Geographic Pristine Seas Expedition to Tristan da Cunha, led by Paul Rose, working for producer Alex Verville. For Blue Planet 2, released in October 2017, Horrocks received cinematography credits on four of the six main episodes, shooting for producers Jonathan Smith, Katheryn Jeffs and Joe Steven. For his contribution to the series has was awarded a BAFTA for Outstanding Cinematography in 2018. Between 2015 and 2018 Roger worked for producer Hugh Pearson on the Coastal Seas and High Seas episodes of the Netflix original series “Our Planet”, produced by Silverback Films. He won a nomination alongside cameraman Jamie McPherson for Outstanding Cinematography for a Nonfiction Program at the 2019 Prime Time Emmy Awards on Los Angeles. In 2019 Roger was one of two Underwater DOPs hired by Jonathan Smith of the BBC Natural History Unit to shoot underwater screensavers for Apple TV. He also began initial work on the oceans episode of Planet Earth 3, produced by BBC Studios. In 2020 Roger contributed two sequences to the Animal series on Netflix, produced by Plimsoll Productions., and worked on a sequence for Silverback TV for a new series to be released in 2023. Coming up after the summer pause there will be special episodes about the Danish Bedside sex comedies and vintage British smut from Screenbound - with guests!Cultpix kicked off the partnership with Ukraine's Dovzhenko Centre that will see us release old and more recent cult films from the country in the news, partly as a Fuck You to Putin for trying to wipe out Ukrainian culture. Slava Ukraini! Return to Treasure Island (1988) - Zany and wacky award-winning animated adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic about the hunt for a buried treasure, with English dub dialogue. Nordisk ToneFilm was an unusual film producer and distributor that made 58 feature film. It started out supporting community cinemas in Sweden, but branched out quickly to a broad offering of comedies, drama, children's films and more. "One Summer of Happiness" (1958), the first Swedish global nudie export success was one of theirs, as too was the "Lille Fridolf" comedy series. [NB: The below films all lack English subtitles as-of-yet. We promise that we are working on it.]Stora Hoparegränd och himmelriket /The Inventor's Dilemma (1949) - A sort of Swedish Film Noir about an inventor lives in Stockholm's old town in a building for all derelict, drunkards, hobos, prostitutes... and a midget. A melodrama but with beautiful vistas of a lost Stockholm. Bröllopsdagen/The Wedding Day (1960) - Star-studded urban comedy about runaway bride/runaway groom. Director Kenne Fant would go onto greater things. Flygplan saknas/An Aeroplane is Missing (1965) - Possibly made just to show how a sea rescue at sea would be executed and how it looks with as much realism as possible. Two pilots who can't stand each other but have to fly together and crash. Top Gun without the aerial dogfights. Kvinnan gör mig galen/Woman Drives Me Crazy (1948) - Mistaken identity comedy with wealthy aunt plot device, called a "light, elegant, half-crazy Swedish comedy". Music by Boogie-woogie piano player Charlie Norman. Det var en gång/Once Upon a Time (1945) - Anthology children's film that partly feels like a folk horror when watched today. The Christmas film with the Wise owl, Pappa Bear and Little Troll feels very folklory weird.  Goda vänner trogna grannar/Good Friends and Faithful Neighbours (1960) - Father and husband who makes life misery for those around him get his comeuppance; a theme also found in  "Morianna" (1965) and "Jokerfejs" (1983).Vildmarkssommar/Matty (1957) - Strange hybrid of drama and nature documentary in the style of old Disney Nature film, that fits in most of the fauna of northern Sweden. We will be back in late August/early September with more cult films, guests and the returns of Kitty Lash.

We all know the anti-drug propaganda, and we've all heard about “bad trips,” but how much of that is actually true? Today's guest made the Netflix Documentary “Fantastic Fungi” and has a different viewpoint on psychedelics. In this episode, Louie Schwartzberg explains how many psychedelics, like "magic mushrooms," were never considered illegal until the drug war was ramped up in the 1970s. Before that, they had been used for thousands of years in various cultures around the world. Now that society is having a “psychedelic renaissance,” learn how these drugs — or “sacred medicines” — have found new applications in mental health. To learn more -- or read the transcript -- please visit the official episode page here. Guest Bio Louie Schwartzberg is an award-winning cinematographer, director, and producer who has spent his notable career providing breathtaking imagery using his time-lapse, high-speed, and macro cinematography techniques. Schwartzberg is a visual artist who breaks barriers, connects with audiences, and tells stories that celebrate life and reveal the mysteries and wisdom of nature, people, and places.  Louie's theatrical releases include the 3D IMAX film “Mysteries of the Unseen World” with National Geographic, narrated by Forest Whitaker; the theatrical feature, “Wings of Life” for Disneynature, narrated by Meryl Streep, and “America's Heart and Soul” for Walt Disney Studios, and his TED talks have over 60 million views on YouTube. Louie's most recent feature film, “Fantastic Fungi,” is now playing in local theaters throughout the U.S. to rave reviews. Louie has also directed “Soarin' Around the World;” the most popular motion simulator ride film now playing at Disney Theme Parks globally. Season 3 of his series, Moving Art, is now streaming on Netflix. For Schwartzberg, the greatest satisfaction is creating works that can have a positive effect on the future of the planet, by protecting what we love. Pleased to have Harry Gregson-Williams (Shrek, Mulan, The Chronicles of Narnia) join me for a quick chat. We primarily focus on his scores for the two new Ridley Scott films The Last Duel and House of Gucci, as well as his score for the upcoming Disneynature film Polar Bear. Along the way we talk about distraction in film music and some recent scores that Harry's been enjoying. Although it's a quick chat - Harry originally only had twenty minutes, though we stretched it to just over half an hour - we managed to cover a great amount!   These two films do a fantastic job of showing Harry's range. While The Last Duel is an often somber, heavily thematic and semi-period specific score (late 14th century), House of Gucci sees Harry jump into a much more stylized, nearly-contemporary sound.   The Last Duel is now available to rent while House of Gucci is currently in theaters, while many of Harry's scores are available on all major platforms. Although House of Gucci didn't end up having a full score from Harry, the film's soundtrack release does include his score suite.
