On Sunday, June 17, 2001—Father's Day—FDNY members in Queens responded to a telephone alarm reporting a fire in a hardware store at 12-20 Astoria Boulevard. What initially appeared to be a routine cellar fire in a small, two-story commercial occupancy quickly escalated into one of the most tragic fires in FDNY history. At approximately 1447 hours, a powerful explosion tore through the building. The large bearing wall and portions of the roof on the 14th Street side of the building sustained a total collapse, and portions of the front wall collapsed as well. Firefighter Harry Ford of Rescue Company 4 and Firefighter John Downing of Ladder Company 163 were buried in the collapse, and Firefighter Brian Fahey of Rescue Company 4 fell through an opening into the cellar and became trapped beneath heavy debris. FDNY members mounted an historic rescue effort to remove the three trapped firefighters. But tragically, all three succumbed to their injuries.As we mark 25 years since the Father's Day Fire, host Battalion Chief Jason Cascone is joined by Assistant Chief Michael Meyers, the FDNY Chief of Training, and Captain Liam Flaherty, the company commander of Rescue Company 2. At the time of the Father's Day Fire, Captain Flaherty was assigned as a firefighter in Rescue Company 4, and Chief Meyers had recently been promoted from Rescue 4. Together, they discuss this devastating historic fire, the lessons learned from it, and the remarkable resilience of the companies and members that suffered heartbreaking losses.

In today's sermon, we explored the urgency and significance of heeding God's warnings, drawing parallels between the days of Noah and our current times. We began by reflecting on how moments of global crisis often drive people to seek solace and answers in the church, much like the packed congregations during the Gulf War. This led us to the story of Noah, emphasizing that the real narrative is far from the sanitized Sunday school version. The world was filled with wickedness and violence, and despite repeated warnings, people ignored Noah's message until it was too late. We then transitioned to the New Testament, focusing on Jesus' words in Matthew 24. Jesus likened His second coming to the days of Noah, where people were caught off guard despite clear signs and warnings. The coming of the Son of Man will be sudden and unexpected for those who are not vigilant. We discussed the predictability of certain signs, such as the darkening of the sun and the falling of stars, which will precede His return. However, the exact day and hour remain unknown, emphasizing the need for constant readiness. The sermon also touched on the dual aspects of Jesus' return: the rapture of the church and His subsequent return to establish His kingdom. We are living in a time where normalcy can be deceptive, and the urgency to be spiritually prepared cannot be overstated. The message concluded with a call to action for believers to stay vigilant, stir up their faith, and be ready for the imminent return of Christ.

It’s been three years since the Labor Day fires burned more than 4,000 homes and about a million acres of land across Oregon. Since then, fire investigators have only publicly released the cause of one of the nine major fires. Zach Urness is the outdoor editor for the Statesman Journal and the host of the “Explore Oregon” podcast. This week Clint and Dawson sit down with Cassandra Riddle. Cassandra's list of accomplishments, talants, and hobbies is impressive. Yet she also has suffered from Cystic Fibrosis all her life but wasn't diagnosed until last year. Cassandra was an international opera singer and performed all over the world. She was based out of NYC in the 90's and early 2000's, and in 1997 won an Emmy award. At the height of her career, she retired for new challenges and began to run marathons, triathlons and became a talented rock climber. She has climbed both here in the United States as well as internationally. In fact, she just returned from a climbing trip in Greece. She also owned a business that focused on private sport-specific training. She has been a music director for a private school and even taught motorcycle safety. Recently she received a Masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and now works as a Mental Health Counselor at UTC. Dawson and Clint wanted to share a few stories that they liked and feel you may like to - just in case you missed them! Story 1 - Pete Ripmaster Episode 169. Pete won the 2018 Iditarod Trail Invitational - which is a race where participants navigate the 1000 mile trail on foot. In his 2016 attempt; while in one of the most isolated areas and crossing a frozen lake, he broke through the ice pulling him and his sled into the frigid water! Story 2 - Same episode with Pete Ripmaster - 169! One morning Pete woke up and had some guests - wolves! Yes, wolves! Enjoy! Story 3 - On episode 165 Spencer Whittier joined us! He is a real-life mountain biking badass! However, the story he shared with us at the end of our podcast made Dawson and Clint both shake their heads! Give it a listen and you will understand why! Story 4 - From episode 143 - Lauren Templeton! Lauren comes from a very adventurous family and she shares family stories going back to her Grandmother's climbing and rafting trips. She shared with us a story about her grandmother - a trip out west - and a hearse! Yep....enjoy!!! Story 5 - In episode 172 we had Tom Rowland back on the podcast. As most know Tom is a TV and Podcast host with millions of downloads. Tom has been a fishing guide, a tv host and starred in countless TV fishing shows. This time they talked with Nancy about her Backpacking 101 workshops she is leading through the Blue Ridge Hiking Company! Answering questions that a lot of beginners may have about hiking and camping. What to take - where to go - when to go - safety - animal encounters - expectations - gear considerations - and much more! PLUS - they shared a few stories and laughs along the way. Who is Nancy East? She is the author of; 'Chasing the Smokies Moon' - she is a member of the Haywood County's Search and Rescue Team, a founding board member of the WNC Wilderness Safety Fund, a Gossamer Gear Ambassador, and a Southern Appalachian Naturalist. In 2019, she and her good friend, Chris Ford, set the fastest known time (FKT) for a mixed-gender team on the Tour de LeConte Challenge. In 2020, they set the overall FKT for the Smokies 900 Challenge. Nancy has hiked all the trails in the Smoky Mountains National Park four times, and she continues to go back for more.
