POPULARITY
On 4th December 1994 Jonathan Ross hosted the British Comedy Awards in front of an invited audience of the great and the good and Noel Edmonds. It was a good year for the likes of Steve Coogan, Michael Barrymore and the Drop the Dead Donkey team but almost from the off Ross was beset by problems, including announcing the winner of the wrong award, having to deal with an out-of-control Meatloaf whose sole intention, it seemed, was to reduce Wossy to a quivering mess, and, most notably, attempting to wrest back control of the room in the wake of Spike Milligan calling the future King of England a 'little grovelling bastard'. The reaction and fallout was to dominate the redtops for days and raised Spike's profile so sufficiently that his chatshow bookings and requests for interviews quadrupled overnight. Joining Tyler to talk about all that and examine the winners (and losers) of the evening are co-host of The Sitcom Club podcast Gary Rodger and the man behind Behind The Stunts, Jon Auty. There's clips aplenty and personal reminiscences from Clive Anderson and Jane Milligan. It's a fun stroll down memory lane and a useful reminder that there was a time when Michael Barrymore was the biggest name in showbiz and the likes of Armando Iannucci and Chris Morris were still considered 'the new boys'.

review A News Huddlines reunion celebrating the life and comedy of Roy Hudd OBE. The Roy Huddlines was staged on Sunday 14th May 2023 at the Sondheim Theatre in London's West End. The cast, writers and producers of BBC Radio's longest-running audience comedy programme, The News Huddlines, gathered to celebrate the life, love and laughter of Roy Hudd OBE. Roy had a profound effect on all who worked with him - he was a unique combination of comedy genius, wise mentor and cheeky uncle. The cast reunited here for one joyous hurrah in his honour are Huddlines originals Chris Emmett, Alison Steadman, Nichola McAuliffe and announcer Richard Clegg, plus Kate Harbour and the brilliant Jon Culshaw who took Roy's centre microphone with the blessing of Roy's widow, Debbie Hudd. Also assembled for this gala event were the writers who cut their comedy teeth working on The News Huddlines and went on to create some of the finest British comedy from the 1980s to the present day. Not the Nine O'Clock News, Spitting Image, Drop the Dead Donkey and One Foot in the Grave were all created by Huddlines alumni, and the legacy continues. Written by Starring

This week we review Drop The Dead Donkey (Series 1 Episode 5)Topical sitcom set in the production office of GlobeLink News, a television news company undergoing transformation under the hand of unscrupulous new owner Sir Royston Merchant. Having recently acquired the company, the multi-millionaire media tycoon and business tyrant orders that the staff should start taking a more sensationalist, tabloid stance in its reporting.Yuppie Gus Hedges (who speaks in a myriad of boardroom 'buzzwords' and clichés) is in charge of the transformation. Nervous news editor George Dent is too weak to stand up to Gus so it is left to his second in command Alex, to try and stop Gus ruining the station entirely.Written by Andy Hamilton & Guy JenkinProduced by Andy Hamilton, Guy Jenkin and Denise O'DonoghueDirected by Liddy OldroydA Hat Trick production for Channel 4.Drop The Dead Donkey is available here: https://bit.ly/3tqQ1ZB The Comedy Slab Podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spreaker, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, Spotify and Youtube. Andy Hamilton is a comedian, game show panellist, television director, comedy screenwriter, radio dramatist, novelist and actor and you have probably seen and/or heard him on Have I Got News For You, The News Quiz, QI or I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue. He's written for television shows including Drop the Dead Donkey and Outnumbered and is currently working on Kate & Koji for ITV with regular writing partner Guy Jenkin. Simon talks to Andy about his novels, specifically his latest Longhand, which is an especially unique book in that the entire thing is handwritten, perfectly reproducing Andy's original longhand manuscript. The story is of Malcolm George Galbraith, a Scotsman who is writing a letter to his wife - hence the longhand - to explain why he has to leave and never return. The explanation involves a vast, surprising, moving and funny dive into mythology. Simon chats with Andy about finding a publisher who was willing to reproduce his handwriting, how the unusual form supports and enhances the story being told and why it's probably a one-off.
