Welcome to Episode 25 of the HECHO Podcast, the podcast featuring the Coastal Bend's creators, makers, doers, and builders. If you've attended school in the Coastal Bend at any time over the past 40 years, it's entirely possible that our guest on this episode, or his father, designed your school. On this episode, we visit with Nick Gignac from Gignac Architects in Downtown Corpus Christi. Nick is a second-generation architect, born and raised here in Corpus but with experience from around the state and the world. His dad Raymond, started the firm about 40 years ago, and after growing up in and around the office, Nick joined Raymond and the team of architects, designers, and other professionals and has been designing public and private buildings and homes around the Coastal Bend and across the state. Some of their notable projects here in South Texas include the American Bank Center, Veterans Memorial High School, Carroll High School, and the to-be-built convention center on South Padre Island, and some 600 other schools here and around the state. I always envy those who get to leave their stamp on a community for 50 years like Nick discussed. What an honor! If you're curious about some of Gignac Architects' current projects here in the Coastal Bend, you can check out the new Fire and EMS station in Port Aransas, currently being built with Victory Building Team, the Education Service Center in downtown, being built with South Texas Building Partners, and Hamlin Middle School on Staples with PBK and Fulton Construction. Thank you, Nick, for coming on the show. Thank you to our infrastructure partners, Clint Tucker Homes and Sawyer Audiology. And thank you for taking time to listen!

Dan is a national educational consultant who provides staff development and consultative services to educators K-12. Dan is passionate about helping individuals shift their perspective on behavior, understanding the best ways to provide support given the challenges posed in today's society. He regularly presents on topics impacting school climate, brain-based instruction, developmentally appropriate educational practices and presentation skills. Dan's overwhelming strength is his skill as a presenter. Although his sessions are exceedingly interactive and engaging, his greatest asset lies in his ability to offer participants rich insight into the connectedness between educational practices and student behavior. After receiving his master's degree in education, Dan worked in both private residential and public school settings. His work as a self-contained behavior unit teacher, Educational Diagnostician, and Director of a Learning Resource Center afforded him experience at all levels, in both general and special education settings. Dan's consultative experience comes from his work as an Educational Specialist for the Education Service Center in San Antonio, Texas. While there, he designed a three-year program certifying individuals to serve as behavior specialists throughout the region. He also regularly provided technical assistance in the areas of behavior, special education, dropout prevention, school climate and developmentally appropriate practices. After working at the Education Service Center, Dan sought out a job returning to the school setting allowing him to work directly with children. For seventeen years, Dan was a behavior consultant for the Alamo Heights Independent School District in San Antonio, Texas. Though he provided support for all schools, his primary responsibilities were at the Howard Early Childhood Center working with the district's youngest learners. While there, he provided in class lessons, small group and individual support, as well as presentations to staff and parents. Dan retired from the school system in May of 2020 after thirty years of work in education. Though he is now slowing down, working to have a better balance between his work and home life, he still provides presentation and consultative support as an independent consultant. https://danstromain.com Author of two books Teach Skills and Break Habits: Growth Mindsets for Better Behavior in the Classroom Dan published this book in 2018. It is designed for PK-5 grade teachers to help them move away from a model of rewarding and punishing towards a model of teaching and practicing behaviors. Positive Behavior Principles: Shifting Perspectives and Aligning Practices in Schools This new book, just released, is designed for PK-12 grade educators and features nine principles for positively shaping behaviors in the school setting. The book also has Graphic Summary Sheets that can be purchased to complement the principles. Note: Dan has NOT presented in Halifax, even though I said it at least three times in the interview! :-)

Kim Gilson has had a "long and winding road" in her educational career. She began as a high school band director (just ask her about the prop that ate the marching band!) and moved on to be a math teacher after having her first child. This led to a 5-year stint as a high school assistant principal, followed by a central office position where she worked with curriculum, data, and accountability. On July 1st, 2014, she began working at the Region 10 Education Service Center in Richardson, Texas, a 45-mile commute through the heart of Dallas. The very next day, her husband died of a blood clot. Kim powered through the grief process while commuting up Central Expressway for 5 years and currently works as the Chief Academic Officer at Advantage Academy. Kim is a certified Zig Ziglar trainer and coach. Her passion is encouraging women to pursue their giftings with courage and purpose, while making them laugh in the process. You might see her at church, and Kroger afterwards, wearing a tiara to signify she IS a daughter of the King. Kim has 2 grown sons, Trent and Cade, and 4-legged canine children, Duchess and Cosmo. Her life motto is, "Go Big or Go Home." Kim is available for leadership coaching and can be reached on FaceBook by searching Kim Stephenson Gilson or Atomic Joy. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/aneducatorslegacy/support

Welcome back to the show ya’ll! Today I’m talking with another amazing student guest about coding, art, and student-led innovation. Ainsley McClard is going into the 7th grade next year and she chats about some amazing projects she’s been involved in, what she thinks about the grading system, and why she started her own business! Ainsley loves to learn and create. Her favorite classes involve art and creation and she has used this passion to create inventions with coding! She also creates bracelets (that you can buy to help her fund her Washington D.C. field trip) and she’s learning to sew. Sometimes she gets bored when they aren’t moving quickly enough through the material. She also shares her thoughts on grading and why there should be a way for students to obtain feedback and correct their mistakes prior to receiving a final grade. That’s not all she shares on the grading issue, listen in to learn more. Ainsley was unbelievably transparent about her thoughts on her classrooms, her projects, and her feelings toward school. This is definitely an episode that would inspire many to either continue working on technology-driven projects in their classrooms or start implementing them! Chris Everett is Culture Design Strategist for Engage2Learn (www.engage2learn.org), has been a Texas educator for 20 years, serving at multiple levels within the school structure including as a classroom teacher, a coach, a campus administrator, a district administrator, and a director at a regional Education Service Center. I got to know Chris nearly a year ago at a Rex Miller MindShift gathering in Los Angeles where we discovered many of the same interests in how schools fit into a larger ecosystem. We had a fun conversation about his title, which is where we start the podcast conversation; however, the fun part of this podcast is in his experiences with catalyzing culture change in the learner experience through work with schools, building new facilities, and bringing about a sense of how what the future of learning looks like is even uncertain.
Janet Thornton is an education specialist for the Region 17 Education Service Center and has lived on the South Plains her entire life. We talked about the challenges that rural school districts face, how small communities can retain teachers, opportunities for young people back in their small communities, and similarities between farming and teaching.
