Welcome to Episode 25 of the HECHO Podcast, the podcast featuring the Coastal Bend's creators, makers, doers, and builders. If you've attended school in the Coastal Bend at any time over the past 40 years, it's entirely possible that our guest on this episode, or his father, designed your school. On this episode, we visit with Nick Gignac from Gignac Architects in Downtown Corpus Christi. Nick is a second-generation architect, born and raised here in Corpus but with experience from around the state and the world. His dad Raymond, started the firm about 40 years ago, and after growing up in and around the office, Nick joined Raymond and the team of architects, designers, and other professionals and has been designing public and private buildings and homes around the Coastal Bend and across the state. Some of their notable projects here in South Texas include the American Bank Center, Veterans Memorial High School, Carroll High School, and the to-be-built convention center on South Padre Island, and some 600 other schools here and around the state.   I always envy those who get to leave their stamp on a community for 50 years like Nick discussed. What an honor! If you're curious about some of Gignac Architects' current projects here in the Coastal Bend, you can check out the new Fire and EMS station in Port Aransas, currently being built with Victory Building Team, the Education Service Center in downtown, being built with South Texas Building Partners, and Hamlin Middle School on Staples with PBK and Fulton Construction. Thank you, Nick, for coming on the show. Thank you to our infrastructure partners, Clint Tucker Homes and Sawyer Audiology. And thank you for taking time to listen!

The fight over diversity in Southlake's Carroll Independent School District is back in the headlines and has a new focus — books. Teachers are worried about a new Texas law that limits instruction on contentious topics, and one of them secretly records a meeting in which a Carroll administrator offers an unexpected piece of advice: If teachers share books about the Holocaust with students, the administrator says, then they should also offer books on “opposing perspectives.” Teachers are incredulous, and the recording sets off an international backlash. In this special bonus episode, we speak with a former librarian at Carroll Senior High School, who retired early instead of continuing to navigate the battle over books, as well as a 12-year-old student whose mother pulled him out of the district after he faced severe bullying over his sexuality. And we have new details on what could be a game-changing development in Southlake: a federal civil rights investigation into students' complaints of discrimination. If you or someone in your life is in distress, you can always call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Five months after the high-stakes local election in Southlake, the city is gearing up for yet another contentious vote. One of the school board members who supported the diversity plan, retired Air Force Col. Dave Almand, is stepping down, and the battle over diversity programs is at the center of the fight to replace him. But he's far from the only leader to leave a role in public schools this year following attacks from parents opposed to what they see as the quiet creep critical race theory. For this special bonus episode, we sit down with a panel of four educators from across the country who've come under fire, including James Whitfield, the first Black principal at a high school a town over from Southlake, whose school board has begun a formal process that could lead to his termination. The educators discuss how the anti-CRT movement is driving them out of their careers—and away from their students.

It's Election Day in Southlake, Texas — time to see if all the fighting over the school district's Cultural Competence Action Plan translates into votes. A handful of candidates and supporters who want to see new diversity programs rally in Town Square, across from a much larger, rowdier crowd of those backing the conservative slate. “It's a great town,” one voter shouts over her shoulder. “We want to keep it that way.” After the votes are counted, Southlake becomes a national poster child in the movement to redefine and root out critical race theory. Stuck in the middle is Lane Ledbetter, Carroll's new school superintendent, who is tasked with bringing the community together — but in a rare interview, he struggles to answer questions about racism in Southlake. On graduation day, Nikki Olaleye says she hopes Southlake's future doesn't mirror its past.

The election to fill two school board seats takes center stage—and becomes a referendum on the school district's diversity plan. At a secretly recorded meeting, members of Southlake Families PAC grill a prospective candidate about conservative political causes, from opposition to Black Lives Matter to abortion. As school board candidates debate whether Carroll's code of conduct is enough to protect students, a queer 16-year-old takes a complaint of harassment to Carroll Senior High School's principal — and the response leaves her feeling even less safe at school. Kimberlé Crenshaw, one of the founding scholars of CRT, sheds light on the national battle over the theory, warning of dire consequences. Southlake, Texas, is an immaculate, largely white suburb 30 minutes from Dallas. It's a magnet for well-off parents looking for public schools that will get their kids into top-tier universities — and it doesn't hurt that the town's Carroll High School Dragons routinely compete for the state football championship. Frank and Robin Cornish, a Black couple, moved to Southlake in the 1990s after Frank fell in love with the place, and he soon recruited fellow Dallas Cowboys to join them. But then the Cornish family suffered a tragedy, and gradually they began to see a different side of their town. In 2018, a viral video of students yelling the N-word brought their concerns to the surface — and exposed racism in Southlake's schools. Last Friday night, the Chargers took one on the chin with a 41-21 loss to Northrop on my 50th birthday. After drawing to within 6 at halftime, two turnovers and a blocked punt in the third quarter created a deficit too large for Carroll to overcome. This week's OPS Optimum Performance of the Game provided by SummitCitySports.com is wide receiver Camdyn Childers' diving catch on the second play of the game. In this episode, Coach Dinan and I break down the game against Northrop, and then Coach Dinan gives a preview of what to expect from undefeated Bishop Dwenger when they visit Carroll High School this coming Friday. This week's player interview is senior defensive back and co-captain Collin Beeks. Special thanks to SummitCitySports.com for the use of their audio clips. Wright State University Newsroom

http://wright.edu/news When Jillian Milano trains with her professional tennis coach, it sounds different than the other players there. Her pink tennis shoes squeak louder and when the tennis ball makes contact with her racquet it sounds like an explosion. "We knew at a young age she had a special talent," said Greg Milano, Jillian’s father. Greg should know. He was on the Wright State tennis team in the early 1980s and graduated with a degree in communication. "They would’ve been happy for me no matter where I went, but I think they were happy I chose Wright State," said Jillian. Jillian will graduate from Carroll High School this spring and follow in her parent’s footsteps. She will attend Wright State this fall and is undecided on her major, but like her father she will play tennis for the Raiders. "We feel very confident that Jillian will be very successful at Wright State," said Fran Milano, Jillian's mother. Fran, who is the owner of Frances Milano & Associates, a financial advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services, is confident that her daughter will receive a quality education. Milano received a graduate Bachelor of Science in Financial Planning Services and has hired several graduates from the same program. "Being a student at Wright state has really helped support that whole idea of we want to reach out and help people," said Fran. Wright State isn’t the only team that the Milanos cheer for. Jillian’s older sister Carli is a sophomore tennis player at Wittenberg University. “If they ever play each other no rooting is allowed. We will be happy for both of them,” said Greg. The Wright State tennis team will host the Wittenberg Tigers on April 9. More at wright.edu
