The Secret to Making Sticker Charts Work

Good Enough Parenting

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 26, 2025 19:02

The number one question I get from parents is... How do I get my kid to just… DO the things I need them to do ??And if you've been with me for a long time, you know my usual answer: Don't start a sticker chart! It's a short term solution that usually leads to more stress than success. BUT (get ready for it)… today I'm going to tell you that when done right sometimes sticker charts can workYep. Messy Mixed Messages. On this month's Good Enough Parenting episode I'm sharing  the key ingredients for sticker chart success:✅ Your relationship is the real motivator. Kids don't listen to charts—they listen to people they feel seen and valued by.✅ The goal has to be clear. No vague “be good” nonsense. Try “Put Your Shoes on When Asked”✅ Short time frames = success. No “be kind all week.” More like “use gentle hands in the car on the way to school”✅ Earn, don't punish. Losing stickers for every slip-up just makes kids quit. Focus on building success.✅ Motivators matter. Yes, some experts say “no sweets or screens” as rewards but I once bribed my kid with cans of soda to get them hooked on reading. No regrets. Most importantly—reward charts are a jumpstart, not a forever plan. The goal isn't stickers, it's habits. If it's working, great. If it's stressing everyone out? Ditch it.Because at the end of the day, connecting with your kid is the best way to get cooperative behavior—not some piece of paper covered in Paw Patrol stickers. And even if your junk drawer is basically a graveyard for half-finished “stay in bed” and “clear your plate” charts, don't worry. That's still good enough. With love,Carley

About the Talk In this episode of the Governance Podcast Associate Director Sam DeCanio, Dr. Jonny Benson, and Professor Jason Brennan discusses the relationship between knowledge, expertise and democracy.  The conversation discusses whether democracy should be understood primarily as a system involving electoral choice, or whether democracy is a type of political system incorporating additional elements such as deliberation and the rule of law. We also discuss questions regarding voter knowledge and political accountability, democracy versus rule by knowledgeable experts or the administrative state, and the types of information markets and democracy require to function effectively. The Guest Jonny Benson is a Lecturer at University of Manchester whose research examines democratic theory with a strong connection to the interdisciplinary tradition of politics, philosophy, and economics (PPE). He is particularly interested in contemporary challenges to democracy, including the rise of anti-democratic thought, the relationship to the market economy, and issues of voter knowledge, misinformation, and political polarization. Benson's first book, Intelligent Democracy: Answering the New Democratic Skepticism was published in 2024 by Oxford University Press. His articles have appeared in journals such as the American Political Science Review, Political Studies, Politics, Philosophy & Economics, Synthese, and Economics and Philosophy.   Jason Brennan (Ph.D., 2007, University of Arizona) is the Robert J. and Elizabeth Flanagan Family Professor of Strategy, Economics, Ethics, and Public Policy at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University. Send us a textWelcome to today's episode, where I dive deep into the power of self-confrontation and the often-ignored voice of reason within us. I read something from Tolstoy this morning that perfectly captures this struggle. He wrote, "Reason tells people how much they're at odds with how they should live." It's a profound thought. This passage is not just a quick read; it's a call to action, urging us to reflect and realign with our true selves. In this episode, I'll unpack the conflict between our inner voice of reason and our everyday actions, which often contradict each other. The more we find ourselves reasoning or justifying behaviors that don't align with our best selves, the more we drift away from the life we aspire to live. It's about recognizing those moments when we silence our inner critic to maintain comfort but at the cost of our true potential.Join me as I explore how confronting these truths about ourselves isn't just about making better choices tonight or tomorrow but setting a direction for life that truly reflects who we are and want to be. From reasoning with ourselves about why it's okay "just this once" to turn a critical eye on our daily decisions, this discussion is all about how real change starts with facing the hard truths and making one right decision at a time. So, tune in, reflect, and maybe even challenge yourself to face what you've been avoiding. It's tough, but the path to self-realization is worth every step. Thanks for joining me on this journey. Keep it simple, keep it moving, never settle, stay tough. Peace.

Want a better behaved kid? Begin by teaching them about their brain. This helps your kid externalize their struggles – they go from feeling shame (I'm a bad kid for acting this way) to self-compassion (sometimes I have a hard time and my downstairs brain takes over). Reducing shame, reduces challenging behavior. As childhood expert Pam Leo reminds us,“You can't teach children to behave better by making them feel worse. When children feel better, they behave better.” When we teach kids about their brains and help them understand what triggers them, it normalizes their feelings. We still set limits on behavior, but it comes from a place of compassion rather than control. These are big concepts for little brains. And it can feel a little intimidating to talk to your five year old about neurobiology. But just remember – you don't have to get these talks perfect. You just need to make them good enough. To get Carley's free video teaching you 4 play therapy techniques you can use TODAY to calm your emotional child and bring joy and freedom back to family life click here!http://www.paceparent.com/play And follow her @CarleyCounsels on FB & IG!

What about strong-willed children? Why do we need to be parent-centric in how we approach behavior, rather than trying to modify our children's behavior? What does that look like? What about when peaceful discipline is hard for us? Do we have to parent this way ALL the time? What if parenting this way doesn't come naturally? What is story teaching? Does it work for all ages? What if I'm not creative? When do we use it?Episode Links:Purchase Sarah's book Peaceful Discipline from Booktopia here.Sarah will be offering parent support sessions soon - join her mailing list to be included and get a discount.Follow Sarah on Instagram here.

We discuss what peaceful discipline means, why empathy in parenting is more important than people realize, and why brain science tells us that punishments or punitive leadership fails or backfires and doesn't help you achieve your goals. We also talk about the power of vulnerability and why it may look very different from what you may think. Throughout, we talk about the parallels between applying these principles as parents and as organizational leaders. To access the episode transcript, please click on the episode title at www.TheEmpathyEdge.com Key Takeaways:For children and adults, it is only possible to learn when there is a sense of emotional safety in the body. There are ways to set our children and employees up for success with empathy, no matter what age they are. Speaking with curiosity and neutrality rather than accusation can help to foster the feeling of safety. Every human on the planet wants to be viewed positively and have a sense of belonging and community. Story can give people a sense of safety, even in business. And everyone can tell those stories, even if they don't feel creative or like they're good at it. "If we lead with punishment, the learning part of the brain shuts off. So (they) might be able to go through the motions in the moment, but there's not going to be any lasting change in behavior because they're literally not in a place where they can assimilate new information." — Sarah R. I have recently been reading the book "How to talk so your child will listen & how to listen so your child will talk" and one of the concepts I discovered was the thought that punishment is a distraction.   As I was reflecting on it, I realized I couldn't agree more.   So often we are using punishment because we don't know what else to do, it's how we were raised, or we just don't want our kids to turn out "bad".   But, what is often actually happening is our child is not thinking about how sorry he/she is. The child is usually upset, thinking about how to get revenge, how not to get caught next time, or even that they aren't a "good" kid because they messed up.   Tune in as I share 6 simple strategy shifts you can make to avoid punishment while still getting better behavior!   Want more info on your own customized Behavior Blueprint? When it comes to parenting, there are plenty of dos and don'ts experts will give you. But one thing most experts will agree on, including my guest for this week's episode Sarah R Moore, is that discipline should be used sparingly, and only to teach. Letting children learn from their mistakes whilst getting them to move forward, and test their limits are things many parents struggle to ensure happen. Sarah, the author of Peaceful Discipline: Story Teaching, Brain Science & Better Behavior and an expert in gentle parenting joined us to discuss how parents can delicately, and with kindness, get their children to become self-disciplined whilst contributing to a peaceful and strong family connection.[01:40] Introduction of our guest Sarah R Moore.[06:05] The importance of being consistent and predictable with children.[08:10] Negotiating as a part of any relationship. When Sarah R. Moore hears someone bemoaning a toddler's tantrum with, “Oh, he just wants attention,” she's likely to respond with, “Yes, and?” It's a term she learned from an improv class but one she frequently applies to parenting. And in terms of tantrums—be it from a toddler or teen—she believes the cry for attention is due to an unmet need. Sarah joins Dr. Amy and Sandy on the Brainy Moms podcast to talk about a variety of tools she believes can be beneficial in helping children, teens, and us feel seen, safe, soothed, and secure...including story teaching, connection, and co-creating boundaries. I also think that you have had some initial negative thoughts spouting off in your mind when you're witnessing that poor behavior, just like I have. Rest assured that I am here to share some mindset goodness in this episode by sharing a story that had one mama asking me "what about rewarding negative behavior? I feel like I need to have consequences and make threats in order to see good behavior." I love that question, so let's dive in to what I do! In this episode we will unpack: -behavior is a symptom, so what is the root cause? -Yes, we have initial negative thoughts sometimes. What do we do next? -Providing better opportunities for better behavior. -Doing what we want to do with our kids! -Ensuring that hard moment doesn't drag into a hard day... and of course, being the mom you want to be because you CAN do that and it is very much up to you to do so! This can create a lot of pain and difficulties in the lives of parents (and children), to the point where the disorders and challenges can take over the family. My guest this week is Sarah Moore. In this episode, Sarah and I discuss discipline and kids. Now the word discipline can bring up all kinds of thoughts and feelings for parents, often based on our own childhood experiences, beliefs, or things we've read about kids and parenting. The reality is, that all kids need discipline. It's important to understand that discipline really means teaching and guiding, not punishment, spanking, etc., which we often associate with the word. So to help us think about discipline in a developmentally supportive, appropriate, helpful way, I've invited expert Sarah Moore back on the show to share about her new book and more of her wisdom around conscious parenting; to help shift our approach and mindset around discipline so that we able to practice it in ways that are healthier for us, our relationships, and our kids' development. Sarah Moore is the founder of Dandelion Seeds Positive Parenting, and the author of Peaceful Discipline, Story Teaching, Brain Science and Better Behavior. Chaos to Connected - behavior management, parent coach, connected parenting, pediatric occupational therapy

Have you ever typed in a google search bar…”how do I get my child to stop crying?” or “why is my child crying so much?”   Today we are diving into the crying. What it means, why it's beneficial, and how you can support your child through it to build your connection. And if you're new, or you've forgotten, more connection = better behavior.   Here are a few key takeaways to help you understand more about your child as they work through a meltdown/tantrum/emotional expression… Their prefrontal cortex detaches when they are upset and therefore they truly can't rationalize with you during these times. An emotional expression generally is a way to signal you as their caregiver that they are in need of someone to listen and support them. An emotional expression signifies that your child feels safe to share his/her feelings with you.  If we squash a child's ability to express emotion we are hindering their learning process.   So how do you actually help through this process?? With a strategy called Stay Listening.    It is very simple, but that doesn't necessarily mean easy. Tune in as we talk more specifically about how to actually do it AND get results.   If you are struggling to find strategies that help correct the challenging behaviors you are walking through and are ready to establish a Behavior Blueprint with a step by step plan of what to do, then head here for all the details. https://view.flodesk.com/emhttps://dawn-term-318.myflodesk.comails/62c479aee3f481bcc48af99d   Free Special Time e-guide: the #1 Strategy for Transforming Behavior: https://view.flodesk.com/pages/621850e5a41d78f73c5012d8   Connect with me here: https://www.instagram.com/kailijozeiher/   Chaos to Calm Course waitlist: https://view.flodesk.com/pages/621850e5a41d78f73c5012d8   I would love to connect with you and hear more about your journey! This weeks question is from Priscilla, “I have two daughters, ages 9 and 12, and both are begging to get an iPhone for Christmas this year. My husband and I have somewhat different opinions on this. I'm less comfortable with it than he is. I know there are lots of concerns with kids having their own phones, and honestly, it just feels like one more major thing that's going to be left for me to manage. I'm wondering your opinion on smartphones for kids and when is the right age to get them.”                                           In this episode, I will address age-appropriate smartphones.  At some point, all parents will have to deal with deciding when it is appropriate to buy a smartphone for their child.  Although there are no hard and fast rules for when it is appropriate, there are many things to consider. Let's discuss the pros and cons of smartphones, criteria, and questions to help you decide when your child may be developmentally ready to handle the responsibilities of a phone, and once that is decided, how to set expectations, boundaries, and monitoring of the devices. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. This well-known saying is known as the “Golden Rule. Simply put, it means to treat others the way you want to be treated. The moral principle behind the Golden Rule is admirable, but it's not always how things happen in the real world. It if were, there would be less crime and fewer conflicts. But what if you were visiting a virtual world? Might it be possible to experience the harmful actions you take from the perspective of the victim? Could these VR experiences help us live by the Golden Rule? Here is a question I get all the time from my listeners: "Help, my kids are out of control! What can I do?"Now this is something every early childhood teacher has had to deal with in their career. It's no secret that young children are not all angels. It's normal, they're kids, and they don't have as much impulse control as we do. Plus, they're at that age when they're starting to feel like their own person and want to express themselves. So, how do you make them behave in the classroom?Well, what if teaching kids to behave wasn't about controlling their behavior, but instead about teaching them the skills they need to express their feelings and emotions? This is exactly what I discuss in today's episode of Elevating Early Childhood, so, if this sounds like your cup of tea (and I know it does), tune in now! Key Takeaways:What is our goal with behavior in the classroom? Dan is a national educational consultant who provides staff development and consultative services to educators K-12. Dan is passionate about helping individuals shift their perspective on behavior, understanding the best ways to provide support given the challenges posed in today's society. He regularly presents on topics impacting school climate, brain-based instruction, developmentally appropriate educational practices and presentation skills. Dan's overwhelming strength is his skill as a presenter. Although his sessions are exceedingly interactive and engaging, his greatest asset lies in his ability to offer participants rich insight into the connectedness between educational practices and student behavior. After receiving his master's degree in education, Dan worked in both private residential and public school settings. His work as a self-contained behavior unit teacher, Educational Diagnostician, and Director of a Learning Resource Center afforded him experience at all levels, in both general and special education settings. Dan's consultative experience comes from his work as an Educational Specialist for the Education Service Center in San Antonio, Texas. While there, he designed a three-year program certifying individuals to serve as behavior specialists throughout the region. He also regularly provided technical assistance in the areas of behavior, special education, dropout prevention, school climate and developmentally appropriate practices. After working at the Education Service Center, Dan sought out a job returning to the school setting allowing him to work directly with children. For seventeen years, Dan was a behavior consultant for the Alamo Heights Independent School District in San Antonio, Texas. Though he provided support for all schools, his primary responsibilities were at the Howard Early Childhood Center working with the district's youngest learners. While there, he provided in class lessons, small group and individual support, as well as presentations to staff and parents. Dan retired from the school system in May of 2020 after thirty years of work in education. Though he is now slowing down, working to have a better balance between his work and home life, he still provides presentation and consultative support as an independent consultant. https://danstromain.com Author of two books Teach Skills and Break Habits: Growth Mindsets for Better Behavior in the Classroom Dan published this book in 2018. It is designed for PK-5 grade teachers to help them move away from a model of rewarding and punishing towards a model of teaching and practicing behaviors. Positive Behavior Principles: Shifting Perspectives and Aligning Practices in Schools This new book, just released, is designed for PK-12 grade educators and features nine principles for positively shaping behaviors in the school setting. The book also has Graphic Summary Sheets that can be purchased to complement the principles. Note: Dan has NOT presented in Halifax, even though I said it at least three times in the interview! :-)
