How often have you stopped, I mean really stopped, to take a moment out of your day to contemplate what really matters to you? Perhaps you meditate, perhaps you journal. And yes, those things do allow us to pause, but often during that time our mind is still occupied with other thoughts.   I want to know if you actually take time to ponder what brings you nourishment in your life? I am not just talking about food here, and yes of course that is important and we talk about that all the time. Just as important as food are the other ways in which we nourish our minds our bodies and our souls. Today in my conversation with Elyse Wagner, we dive into this area of self-nourishment and how to do it.   How to ask the important questions and why it really matters in the long run. If we just move from one task to the next does that nourish us?  If we are just crossing things off of our to do list, while yes, it might be productive, does it contribute to our overall sense of wellbeing? Take a listen to this podcast to find out the many pearls of wisdom that Elyse has to share. In this episode, I chat with a new friend Elyse Wagner on functional medicine coaching and mindset!   What is her story and why? "I've been shaped by both the Standard American Diet and the Functional Medicine Lifestyle. When I was a kid, I endured taunts like "Obese Elyse" due to my weight. It was clear to me that I needed to begin with my diet. After consulting with a nutritionist, I made a complete 180 in my eating habits. In just two months, I shed 50 pounds, my skin cleared up, my hair started to flourish, and I had an epiphany: Food Is Medicine! This epiphany set me on my life's path and purpose. Armed with an undergraduate degree in Nutrition and Dietetics, I came to realize that what I was learning in school didn't quite align with my values or personal journey. It always baffled me why, in this age of readily available information, we struggle to make necessary changes. As it turns out, food, nutrition, and eating are only a part of the puzzle when it comes to overall well-being. My journey continued as I pursued dual master's degrees in nutrition and clinical health psychology. Along the way, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, and it became apparent how challenging it can be to make meaningful health changes. However, I firmly believed that it shouldn't be this hard. I made a commitment to heal myself through nourishing whole foods and a positive mindset, with the intention of then helping others do the same. Fast forward 15 years, and I've played a pivotal role in creating the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy. Our one-year, online program equips health coaches to bridge the gap between healthcare providers and patients, empowering people to improve their health and well-being. My passion lies in empowering individuals to take charge of their health, nurturing a world where everyone becomes the CEO of their own well-being."   Instagram:  @functionalmedcoach and @elyse_wagner Linkedin:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/elyse-wagner-ms-cn-lmhca-80370419/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/functional-medicine-coaching-academy-inc-/ YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/c/FunctionalMedicineCoachingAcademy

Join our Business Ninja Kelsey, together with the Co-Founder and Chief Wellness Officer of Functional Medicine Coaching Academy, Elyse Wagner, as they talk about the importance of Health and Wellness Coaching. What is it like to be helped by a Health Coach? The conventional system has grown so dependent on pharma, on prescribing away every symptom, that some may have forgotten how to restore health: by addressing and resolving the root cause of illness, not just the symptoms. Led by their partner, The Institute for Functional Medicine—the global leaders in Functional Medicine—this revolution is about reorienting the healthcare system toward identifying the complexity of disease. Functional Medicine is an individualized, patient-centered, science-based approach to healthcare that looks beyond symptom resolution to identify why illness occurs and address those root causes to restore health. While conventional medicine focuses on using medication to reduce symptoms, Functional Medicine empowers patients and practitioners to work together to resolve the complex underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness through diet and lifestyle change. Welcome to the SYNC Your Life podcast episode #85! On this podcast, we will be diving into all things women's hormones to help you learn how to live in alignment with your female physiology. Too many women are living with their check engine lights flashing. You know you feel "off" but no matter what you do, you can't seem to have the energy, or lose the weight, or feel your best. This podcast exists to shed light on the important topic of healthy hormones and cycle syncing, to help you gain maximum energy in your life.  In today's episode, I'm interviewing Elyse Wagner. Elyse has always been a questioner, motivated to discover what's possible when you're really, truly in your soul purpose. For her, that purpose is to help others take ownership of their health. She first embraced this calling while in graduate school at Bastyr University, when she was diagnosed with celiac disease. In struggling with her diagnosis, she realized that she had always known, intuitively, that certain foods were creating “brain fog,” bloating, and mood swings. So she made the empowering decision to become the CEO of her health and tapped into the motivation to change her lifestyle. Elyse healed her mind and body by applying the knowledge she was learning in her master's program: that food and a positive mindset are the most powerful medicine. It became clear to her that she was called to empower others to choose health and educate them on how to achieve wellness. After earning a dual master's degree in holistic nutrition and clinical psychology, Elyse began practicing as a certified nutritionist and licensed mental health counselor. In 2013, she founded My Kitchen Shrink, Inc. and joined Dr. Scheinbaum at Feed Your Mind Wellness, LLC as a Health Coach, where they connected over their shared belief in the transformative power of Functional Medicine coaching. Elyse always hoped to make a powerful impact on the world through health education. Founding FMCA and serving thousands of students as part of the Functional Medicine movement is the manifestation of a lifelong dream. “Sandi and I share a passion for teaching, inspiring, and empowering like-minded professionals to become effective coaches. FMCA provides an educational framework that embodies the perfect blend of mind, body, and spirit. It's not just a program, it's a movement, and I'm honored to have the opportunity to guide your personal and professional growth. This is what I'm here to do, what I need to do. We discuss the importance of food on our overall wellness, mind/body connection, and how each body needs an individual approach to live a healthy, quality life. Elyse shared her personal story of health and what helped her make the change necessary to lead a healthy lifestyle and how she now helps others do the same! This was a very insightful discussion and I think it can add value to anyone who is on the journey of understanding their bodies more, leading an overall healthier lifestyle and just generally wanting to be better. About Elyse: Elyse Wagner has always been a questioner, motivated to discover what's possible when you're really, truly in your soul purpose. This is my purpose.” Elyse is the author of Smoothie Secrets Revealed: A Guide to Enhance Your Health and co-author of Functional Medicine Coaching: How to Be Part of the Movement That's Transforming Healthcare. As a global leader in health coaching, Elyse has a mission to make a powerful impact on the world through health education. She strongly believes her purpose is to help individuals become the best version of themselves by creating optimal health that is sustainable for a lifetime. Dr. Sandra Scheinbaum and Elyse founded the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy (FMCA) after noticing a gap in the healthcare system: more doctors were prescribing diet and lifestyle changes to patients with chronic conditions, but patients struggled to implement and sustain their new routines. They needed the support of trained, certified health coaches skilled in Functional Medicine and behavior-change techniques to achieve optimal health. Founded in 2014 as the only Health Coach Certification Program in collaboration with The Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) and fully approved by the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC), Functional Medicine Coaching Academy trains health coaches in an innovative coaching model which blends Functional Medicine principles with positive psychology coaching. The one-year, online learning program teaches students how to partner with clients, collaborate with practitioners and launch into a growing career that's transforming healthcare. FMCA provides an educational framework that embodies the perfect blend of mind, body, and spirit. It's not just a program, it's a movement, and Elyse Wagner is honored to have the opportunity to help guide you through your personal and professional growth. This is what She is here to do. Sandi, working closely with the Institute for Functional Medicine along with their partner, Elyse Wagner, actually founded the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy in 2014 as an educator and a licensed clinical psychologist for over 35 years. Sandra and Elyse saw a need to support both consumers as well as traditional physicians. As a healthcare system is continuing to change. Boy, isn't that true, making it harder and harder for physicians to provide those high touch services without putting even greater financial pressure on an already struggling medical practice. Sandra is the author of three books including Functional Medicine Coaching: How to be Part of the Movement That's Transforming Healthcare. Sandi, welcome to the Mindshare Mindcast.

As healthcare continues to evolve, the role that functional medicine plays is increasingly important. Individuals are feeling empowered to take a more active role in their own health and health coaches are a rapidly growing segment of the industry. Dr. Sandra Scheinbaum recognized the vital role that coaches play while earning her certification as a functional medicine practitioner. She saw an opportunity to expand the health coaching practice to embrace functional medicine. Dr. Scheinbaum partnered with certified nutritionist and licensed mental health counselor, Elyse Wagner, while working together as mental health professionals in Chicago. The two women connected over their shared belief in the transformative power of functional medicine and decided to fill the gap by launching the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy to train coaches in a broader set of skills that support a holistic treatment plan. The program is a collaboration with The Institute for Functional Medicine and its core mission is to deliver a lifelong dedication to excellence in functional medicine and health coaching education. I believe that Functional Medicine coaches are uniquely suited to help people take charge of their health. Greetings, SuperFriends! Today we are joined by Elyse Wagner. Elyse is another person that I met through Genius Network (it seems like my entire network is now becoming wonderful people from Genius Network)! Elyse has a passion for educating & empowering others to become the CEO of their health, and, for that reason, she is the proud co-founder of FMCA, the global leader in health coaching. Their innovative training courses are making personalized healthcare a reality for the world. While that's just the bio that I wanted to give for Elyse, I think that it perfectly lines up with what we talked about in the episode. Because we've talked about functional medicine a lot in the past, as we've had incredible guests, from Mark Hyman to Sachin Patel, we've learned a lot about what functional medicine is. What we haven't actually learned, though, is how we can start applying and approaching it from a way that's practical and affordable in our own lives. Having a functional medicine doctor can cost tens of thousands of dollars a year, and that's not realistic for a lot of people. Personally, I really loved my biggest takeaway from the episode, which was that you don't have to completely jump ship to benefit from the things that functional medicine is discovering and teaching. You can work with your doctor in a different way, you can be an educated consumer of medicine, and you can always find a functional medicine coach - Elyse will share with you how to do that. I really enjoyed chatting with Elyse. She has an incredible energy and vibrancy, and it is, as you'll find out, only because of functional medicine. We really hear a lot in this episode about her journey to health and wellness, both emotionally and physically. I really believe that you will enjoy this episode, too! -Jonathan Levi

I first found out about Elyse on an online search on meal planning, and I found her blog "5 Good Reasons Why Meal Planning Doesn't Work", and I was smitten.  This girl gets it!  In the blog she plays out a conversation between a client and her client's friend about weight loss:“So…. Have you lost any weight,” asks the friend?Linda (client): “Nope… but I'm not counting. I have gained A LOT however!”Friend: “What do you mean you've gained – when you go to a nutritionist you're supposed to lose!”Linda: “Not the case – always. Elyse has taught me skills for life and that's what I've gained. I'm able to make choices and decisions about my food and how I eat so I don't binge anymore, eat emotionally or deny myself of food which often triggers me to overeat and ultimately gain weight.”Here's what we talk about:    Elyse's personal story that starts with being 200 pounds at the age of 13- an the one piece of advice given to her by a nutritionist that completely changed her life    Why she consciously decided NOT to go on to become a Registered Dietitian, and what she did instead    Why she loves smoothies (plus some awesome recipes for you to try at home!)For the show notes and to download our fave smoothie recipes go to www.tanjashaw.com/14
