Have you ever witnessed a youth hockey game where the parents seemed more intense than the players? This episode of Our Kids Play Hockey tackles the pressing issue of inappropriate parent behavior at games, where cursing at referees and yelling at children can become all too common. This episode explores the ripple effects of such negativity, from driving referees away and causing shortages to impacting the overall experience for young players. The hosts highlight the crucial role of organizational culture in setting the tone for positive behavior, emphasizing the need for education and clear communication among coaches, parents, and players. They also remind listeners of practical strategies, like the "24-hour rule" for parent-coach interactions, to curb problematic conduct. By focusing on positive reinforcement and respect, the discussion aims to shift the narrative towards celebrating the majority of uplifting experiences in youth hockey.--00:00:08: Introduction00:01:18: Lee's Story: Inappropriate Parent Behavior at Youth Hockey00:03:35: Discussion on Parental Behavior and Challenges00:05:07: Education and Culture in Youth Sports00:08:20: Importance of Culture and Education in Teams00:11:56: Addressing Inappropriate Behavior and Teaching Moments00:14:58: Impact of Parental Behavior on Kids00:20:20: Referee Shortage and Parental Impact00:24:36: Role of Coaches and Referees in Youth Hockey00:28:44: Addressing Parental Behavior and Culture00:32:32: Establishing Team Culture and Rules00:37:17: Personal Responsibility and Addressing Inappropriate Behavior00:44:42: Challenges in Addressing Inappropriate Behavior00:49:55: Positive Influence and Culture in Youth Hockey00:54:31: Final Thoughts and Closing RemarksText The Our Kids Play Hockey Team! My guest today is my returning friend, Yolanda Williams! We're getting a little meta this week as we focus on what white parent educators can be doing better, but believe me, this episode is full of great content for all parents. After catching-up on how Yolanda, Parenting Decolonized, and her daughter are doing, Yolanda jumps in and explains who takes on the emotional, physical, and spiritual labor of what's going on in our world and why it's such a huge deal for white parent educators to choose silence in order to not offend their clients. The labor, racism, and speaking out about hot topics that parent educators who are people of color are doing take so much time and effort that white parent educators may not even think of. I get vulnerable with Yolanda and ask about what I can do when I feel uninformed and uncomfortable about topics that I know are important to call out (spoiler: you don't need to have all the answers to start speaking out). I ask Yolanda specifically what I can do to make Joyful Courage a more equitable podcast & platform and what I can be teaching new, fresh parent educators. Takeaways from the show The roots of traditional parenting in our country is uncomfortable and rooted in racism, sexism, & capitalism What's the responsibility of white parent educators around race? Where can we grow? What's completely missing? Who is taking on the spiritual, physical, and emotional labor of what's going on in the world right now? How can we weigh in and stand-up for people when we don't know or understand enough information to feel confident about doing so? Asking yourself what you're scared of that's keeping you from speaking out? Sit with it, and do it anyway Centering what our most marginalized children need - everything that they need to be liberated will liberate us, too Using media as a starting point for these conversations For more show notes, including transcripts, visit our website here. This is part 2 of a 2-part special guest episode with Christopher Trizzino. In part 1 Chris shared his fearless journey of how he started tennis very late at the age of 13, fell in love with coaching but had no idea how to succeed with it, and now runs one of the best academies in the entire region. This episode is a great reminder that you don't need to plan every step of your journey in order to succeed. In this episode, Chris discusses the importance he places on parent education, being present at tournaments, and creating a team atmosphere in an individual sport.

Today on the A Pinch of Magick podcast, we're weaving a tapestry of tales and truths with Bridget Supple, an antenatal teacher with a heart full of stories and the author of the enchanting 'The Birthkeeper of Bethlehem - A Midwife's Tale'. We kick off with the sheer joy that non-fiction books bring into our lives, especially those brimming with stories. Bridget shares her insights on how these tales are not just narratives but pathways to deeper understanding and learning. Then, we dive into the profound world of rites of passage. It's a conversation that unfolds layers of meaning and significance, revealing how these milestones shape us. Bridget and I then get personal, sharing our own stories of pregnancy and the profound experiences of birth. She opens up about how her own C-section became a turning point, fuelling her desire to support others through this transformative journey. We discuss the idea or birth not just as a process but as a ritual, a rite of passage that alters you in ways you can't imagine. It's about the transformative power of bringing life into the world. The topic then shifts to the importance of choice in birthing, a critical aspect often overlooked. We explore the historical and current dangers associated with birth, shedding light on the wisdom that once thrived in our communities. We delve into the midwife of Jesus and Mary, unearthing tales and wisdom long buried. It leads us to discuss the demonisation of women throughout history and how their power and knowledge were systematically suppressed. What happens when you write women out of stories and history? We explore this, understanding the gravity of erasing such vital narratives. But it's not all about looking back. We talk about how people are now reclaiming this power, reconnecting to the seasons and cycles, and remembering the wisdom of their bodies. The conversation rounds off with the importance of support, friendship, and connection. It's a reminder of the power that resides within us and the strength we garner from those around us. So, settle in, get comfortable, and let's embark on this journey of rediscovery and empowerment together. About Bridget Supple Bridget has spent the last twenty years supporting women and birthing people through all stages of pregnancy, labour, and parenting. A mother of four herself, she works as an antenatal teacher for a UK Birth and Parenting charity, as well as the National Health Service, both in a major UK Maternity Hospital and as an antenatal teacher for a number of maternity units across the country. For new parents, this condition can be overwhelming and confusing, but with the right knowledge and support, it is possible to manage and alleviate the symptoms of GoR. Whether you are a parent struggling to understand your baby's behaviour or a healthcare provider looking to deepen your understanding of this condition, we hope this podcast will provide you with valuable information and insights to help you navigate the challenges of GoR. So tune in, and let's explore the world of gastro-oesophageal reflux in infants. To get in touch email info@babytribe.ie or follow us on Instagram @afif.elkhuffash & @nursingmama.ie
Beginning with one of the most foundational ingredients available for this brew, Mike and Dan lean on hearty handfuls of Diana Baumrind's nominal research on parenting styles from back in the 1960s. Fresh off a healthy pour on 'Parent Education,' it makes perfect sense for the behavioral brew to examine styles of parenting. Many new flavors and 'hints' of different aromas have surfaced over the years---including terms like 'collaborative parenting', or the seemingly harsher but likely misconstrued 'commando parenting.' At the end of the day, Mike and Dan make a case for the basic four styles--authoritarian, authoritative, permissive and negligent--as first outlined by Baumrind, then renovated by Macoby and Martin in the 1980s. Research on parenting styles is robust and reliable, and a very useful tool in effective parent education on how to best employ ABA procedures and strategies. Be aware, this is a very tall pour, much more than a pint. But it's classic, cold and very refreshing--ENJOY!AND--if you are ready to enjoy the benefits of Magic Mind and boost your brain performance, please use the following link and use the discount code ABAONTAP20 to receive 20% off your purchase:https://www.magicmind.co/ABAONTAP

This can probably be said for most individual sports as well. Team sports have the advantage of having everything organized for the players. There's a coach. A season. A set schedule. Set practice times. Uniforms. Etc.. Sure, there's still a cost to all that, but all the information is put together, and handed out to the parents. They know what to expect, what their schedule is, and then put on their uber hat and drive the kids everywhere. That doesn't exist in junior tennis. www.aubonetennis.com

Parents are an integral part of any successful ABA-based intervention protocol. The simple fact is, given a least restrictive level of services, parents should be enjoying a much greater amount of time with their children than the ABA provider is spending. Historically, this has seen a very necessary and natural evolution, moving from the idea of parent 'training' in ABA methods, to the more modern inception discussed here--parent education about ABA principles as they are actively included in all aspects of so-called intervention. More importantly, a constant flow of information on a variety of techniques, strategies and approaches, promoting a variety of actively desired contingencies, all supporting socially-significant behavior, should be ever present. All this is discussed in this installment of ABA on Tap. Sit back and enjoy--and feel grateful for parents all around who strive to offer their children the best available in all aspects of life. Cheers!*Please note we encountered some line 'noise' in this recording affecting the audio a bit--we apologize for this and will address the matter for future recordings. Often we forget to recognize our teachers, especially in middle and high school. They work long hours grading, planning, and providing academic and emotional support. They also do not receive the compensation they deserve. So, we need to ensure they feel validated and appreciated for their dedication to our children. In this edu-sode we discuss five ways your child can show their appreciation to their teacher without spending a lot of money. Actually, many of them are free! Here are two, but you'll have to listen to hear the rest. Create a book or journal of the teacher's favorite sayings/quotesBake them a treatWant to learn more? And, in what ways are we the ones contributing to their anxiety? This episode is an important one. Today's guest is a force in the special education space and her journey began as a parent of a special needs child. Raja Marhaba joins the conversation today to tell you about her traumatic experiences navigating the special education system and how her journey led her to create The Jonathan Foundation. The Jonathan Foundation for Children With Learning Disabilities is a non-profit organization that raises funds for parents who can't afford assessments for their children. In many unfortunate situations, a child's struggles go unnoticed, undiagnosed, and without support for too long and that wasted time impacts their education and their future. This conversation with Raja will put you in her shoes as a parent who has learned through the eyes of her own children. She hopes that, through the work she does with The Jonathan Foundation, fewer families will experience the challenges she faced and more families will get the support they need. Show Notes: [1:50] - Welcome to the show, Raja! [3:15] - Raja's experience began 26 years ago and she has a parent's perspective. [5:27] - As a new mom, she didn't know how to navigate the special education process. But, she knew her child better than anyone and she learned to be her child's best advocate. [7:16] - At the time, Raja found that not every piece of information was given to her. [8:15] - Raja realized that not everything that was suggested was happening at school to help her son, Jonathan. [9:57] - Raja describes the journey of learning her son has dyslexia. [11:37] - He lost a lot of confidence, but acting classes helped to build it back up. [12:42] - Raja had a lot of questions and lost faith in the school system. [14:54] - This experience set Raja on a new path. She knew she needed to fight and advocate for her children. She sees this as a turning point in her life. [16:35] - Back then, there was no Google. Raja's resources for information were limited, but many of the same problems exist today. [19:38] - This process and the lack of understanding leads to wasted time. [20:53] - Because a psychologist took the time to explain and answer her questions, Raja understood the data from assessments. [21:57] - The assessments could cost a family up to $15,000. [23:55] - It is important for parents to have a professional in their corner. Raja describes some situations where advocacy was crucial. [25:57] - Raja focused on assessments with The Jonathan Foundation because of her experience with the huge cost of assessments for her sons. [27:23] - This experience hurt her family and her own mental health. [28:20] - Raja describes what she learned about her children and what she learned from them. [30:11] - Understanding her children opened up the world for her. [32:05] - Having one child who took so much of her attention, Raja's youngest son was impacted. [34:51] - The sooner the better when it comes to an assessment. [36:29] - If you feel that your child is struggling and the school has said that their evaluation revealed no difficulties, you can request another assessment. [39:02] - The data from an assessment tells a story. [40:41] - Donations can be made to the Jonathan Foundation to help children and families without the funds to afford a quality assessment. [43:29] - Sometimes schools are missing a piece to the puzzle without an assessment. [44:27] - Raja is currently writing a book and she provides a sneak peek. [49:57] - Raja's book will connect you with her story; she hopes that others can learn from her experience. About Our Guest: Raja B. Marhaba is the Founder and President of The Jonathan Foundation for Children with Learning Disabilities, Inc. The motivation for establishing The Jonathan Foundation was driven by her personal struggles with having two children with disabilities and the multiple battles she endured to obtain appropriate special education and related services from their school district over a period of eight years. The result: eight due process complaint filings, including a hearing; an appeal to the Federal Ninth Circuit District Court; as well as periods of extreme financial hardship from the cost of paying for private assessments, specialized interventions, and placements, retaining legal representation, and witness fees. Thus, Raja envisioned The Jonathan Foundation to be the vehicle she would use to assist families, like her own, in dealing with a "broken" special education system, "one child at a time". Since its inception in 2001, The Jonathan Foundation has provided families of children and adolescents with various types of disabilities with information, resources, referrals, and direct advocacy services by Raja in both special education and regional center matters. Let's face it. Teachers are the most underappreciated group of professionals in our country. They are continuously scrutinized, overworked, and bombarded from all sides. Yet, they are the most resilient, caring, and empathetic people who deeply care about the future of our society. So, as the mass exodus of teachers is occurring nationwide, how do we keep them motivated and in their classrooms?Florida 2017 Teacher of the Year, Jessica Solano, joins us in the studio to discuss the innovative, exciting ways Polk County, Florida is retaining their teachers through their Ambassador program, listening to their teachers' needs, and how parents can also lend a hand in helping teachers. Jessica was the very first guest on edu-Me back in October 2019. Since then, she has grown her Teacher Recruitment and Retention division into a model that is being sought after around the country. Parents have learned a lot about how to best meet their children's educational needs over the past few years. What is the best environment. What is the best time of day for maximizing comprehension. What are the resources that best equip their child. Regardless of what type of school your child is in, there are more options today than ever. Brent Goldman, CEO of Xceed Preparatory Academy, joins us this week to discuss a flexible personalized learning model that he created that addresses learning and student success in a way that is counter-intuitive to many of us but necessary for some students who need and crave a different model that focuses more on achieving the ultimate goal of learning through the child's best academic and personal schedule. So often we look at a child who is misbehaving and immediately think, "Wow, they need some help, maybe even medication." Or, "Surely they know better."It's an unfortunate part of how we make assumptions about people and their actions. Dr. Hokehe Eko, a Board Certified Pediatrician and Holistic ADHD Consultant, joins us this week to discuss how we need to do a deeper dive into a child's life, experiences, and trauma to determine whether the behavior is because of their environment or a chemical imbalance that needs to be addressed by medication. She shares that, in order to understand the child, physicians need to inquire about their home life and any experiences that could have led to this behavior. Dr. Eko even shares that a mother's trauma prior to pregnancy can affect a child's behavior. Tess Connolly LCSW talks with Lalaine Frankel about how to manage sibling rivalry especially with tweens and teens. Things shift at this time and we have to look at different ways to manage the changes in how we handle situations we are faced with when this happens. Lalaine offers us some tips and strategies on how we can manage sibling rivalry in our homes as our children reach the tween and teen age. Lalaine shares with us about the work she does with parents and how she helps support them on their parenting journey. She tells us about her six step process C.R.E.A.T.E. that she uses within her 1-1 coaching program for coping with sibling rivalry. Tess and Lalaine talk about the concept that fighting can be a good thing within a family as it creates an opportunity for them to learn how to deal with conflict and gain skills that they benefit from by resolving the conflicts that come up with their siblings. Lalaine shares some of the common struggles that tweens and teens face around sibling rivalry. Tess and Lalaine discuss how tweens and teens are still looking for approval from their parents at this age and also the conflict that comes from boundaries and respecting each other's space and belongings through this developmental time. Lalaine shares with us some ways that parents can manage sibling rivalry through the tween and teen stage. Lalaine talks about the importance of having a plan of how you face sibling rivalry within your family and the importance of talking about it and discussing how you are going to resolve conflicts as a whole family so everyone is on the same page. Lalaine tells us that it is never too late to make the changes within our families. Lalaine is most grateful for all the squabbles that her children had as that has given her the experience that has helped her help other parents. ⭐️Join Tess' weekly parenting journal here: Mindful Kids and Families Journal (Get ready for lessons, podcast leads, offers for parents and ways to win free parent coaching or masterclasses)
