Guest: Dan Panetti, Director of Parent Engagement & Ministry, PCA Plano campus If you'd like to watch this podcast, check out the PCA YouTube page. If you've heard my story, you know that my wife Tricia and I were huge public school advocates - Tricia was teaching in PISD and we wanted to be “salt and light” in the public school system. God had different plans for our family. Twenty-two years ago, I started volunteering at PCA helping out with the Student Leadership Institute (SLI) and then a couple years later, I started a new role as the Worldview Director for PCA. After fifteen years of legal and public policy in the nonprofit world, we had no concept of what the private Christian school was or how we could afford to send four kids to PCA - but God knew, so we trusted Him. Now as we look back at those 20 years at PCA, we are amazed how God provided over and over again, more than we could ask or imagine - our fourth child, Campbell, is graduating from PCA and the blessings from our time at PCA and the friends and community we've done life with has been remarkable! I hope you enjoy some personal and professional reflections and are encouraged that God has you here at PCA for His purposes - so enjoy the ride, it goes by way too fast!
Guest: Stephen Wooten, ResearcherAs a parent, there's nothing more important than making sure your child is safe—especially when severe weather threatens their school day. Whether it's the decision to delay, dismiss early, or shelter in place, we rely on school officials to make the right call. But as any parent knows, those decisions aren't always black and white. Should schools be more cautious, or are they sometimes too quick to pull the trigger? And how much say should parents have in the process, if at all? Today on the show, we're chatting with Stephen Wooten, a researcher who has been studying how parents feel about the tough calls schools have to make. As both a Weather Geek and a parent, this conversation hits close to home.Chapters00:00 The Importance of Weather Decisions for Schools02:49 Understanding Parental Perspectives on School Weather Protocols06:07 Research Methodology: Gathering Insights from Parents08:59 Key Findings: Preferences for Early Dismissals11:54 Infrastructure and Safety: Parents' Concerns14:51 Communication: Building Trust Between Schools and Parents17:57 The Role of Social Media in Weather Communication20:55 Future Directions: Enhancing School Weather Protocols23:57 Conclusion: Balancing Safety and Parental PreferencesSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

My guest today is Skye Eddy, the founder and CEO of Soccer Parenting Association. Sports are in Skye's DNA. She is an experienced coach and former professional player with a long and impressive resume. Today, Skye is tirelessly working to bridge the gap between parents and coaches to create a stronger, more holistic foundation of support for young athletes. As a professional athlete-turned-soccer mom, Skye knew there was a need for better parent/coach collaboration in youth sports, but didn't realize just how much work needed to be done until she experienced being a parent on the sidelines. She saw a pattern: Coaches were defensive towards parents and quick to put them in the “crazy sports parent” category. While parents were too afraid to speak up for fear of being thought of as a “crazy sports parent”. So, she set out to build an educational framework to help coaches and parents learn to communicate, collaborate, and support one another. The work Skye has done through Soccer Parenting Association has changed the game for coaches, parents, and most importantly, athletes. In this episode, you'll learn: How the research and science supports parent/coach collaboration Actionable ways coaches can cultivate a positive parent/coach relationship How lack of education causes stress in parents, and creates a ripple effect The “crazy sports parent” dilemma (and how to break the cycle) How to create a future where sports are really designed for kids Skye is incredible at stating simple concepts in new ways, and shedding light on the sociology of sports. The work she is doing is incredibly important. With every course, presentation, and student, Skye is creating a better sports experience for the next generation of athletes, parents, and coaches. Talk about giving back to the game! I'm thrilled ot help Skye spread the word about Soccer Parenting Association and all her incredible resources for parents and coaches. In this episode of the Play Therapy Podcast, we dive into the practical application of understanding and using play therapy themes, which have been a hot topic in the therapy community. Recognizing and documenting themes in therapy sessions is not just for the therapist's clinical understanding but primarily for communicating with parents. Parents often want tangible and measurable outcomes from therapy, and discussing themes in the context of how they lead to the desired after state for the child can help parents understand the value of play therapy. Themes also provide a framework for the child-centered model, offering a way to track progress in therapy and demonstrate its effectiveness to skeptics. While mastering themes is important, it's okay if it takes time to recognize them during sessions, as long as therapists can reflect on them later. Guest: Dr. Mike Goddard, Superintendent, Prestonwood System of Schools Be the Light Matthew 5:14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16 Dan's new role at PCA is now the Director of Parent Engagement & Ministry - we'll be discovering more about this in upcoming podcasts! Two Things to Consider from This Year's Theme: God wants us to shine brightly for Him! How are you doing as a reflection of God's glory to a dark and dying world? Light exposes what is in the darkness - in the world and in my own heart and life! Dr. Goddard - the Word of God is our “lightsaber”! Dr. Goddard - we need more than a “firework” faith that shines brightly…then fades away quickly. We need to develop a sustaining faith that burns brightly by the power of the Holy Spirit! Parents, you need to be plugged into the Word of God with the people of God (church) so that you can grow into the men and women of God! And what you have been given freely (God's grace), give to others freely! Parents, check out this and future episodes of The Journey on PCA's YouTube channel as well. Please share this podcast and the YouTube video with your friends - it's a great marketing tool for PCA and an excellent equipping opportunity from a Biblical worldview for others! Dr. Goddard - prayer life has changed from “Lord let them have a great day” to “Lord, as we face adversity, let us bring glory to you.” Lean into the difficult and not on your own understanding…but in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths (Proverbs 3:5-6). This episode will get you thinking. In the best possible way. You may be reminiscing about your college experience or feeling pride for your home town school after listening to this week's Episode 38: The University. We've known we would have an episode on Linfield at some point, and the summer seemed like the perfect time to chat with our friends from the University before the new school year begins. We're so thankful we had a chance to spend some time with Professor David Sumner, who has been an English and Environmental Studies at Linfield for 20 years and Debbie Harmon Ferry who is the Director of Alumni and Parent Engagement at the school. Both of these professionals are passionate about their school and it was very easy to hear their dedication to the student's experience. Chelsey had a great time reflecting a bit on her experience attending Linfield as well. It is great to hear that the benefits she gained while a student are still there for new students to explore. We are thankful to have received quality college educations, and whether you go to a large public school or a small private university, if you lean in and take what is provided you really can leave with an amazing gift. We hope you find some renewed connection to Linfield University after listening this week, there's always room in the bleachers for more fans!

This week John shares his thoughts after two weeks on the road visiting college teams and conducting some parent and coach workshops on some topics that have come up a lot recently. Quite a few coaches have asked about parent engagement and how to work with those parents who just don't get it, and John shares his ideas around building trust, and making deposits in the trust bank so you can make withdrawals at a later date when you do screw up, or have to be a bit more demanding. He discusses his thoughts on communication, some tools to get parents, athletes and coaches more aligned, and then the concept of accountability being a two way street, something that takes great courage, and also something that should not be viewed as a negative. He mentions the work of a group called The Program, you can learn more about them here. REGISTER NOW!
