In this episode, host Sarah Cunningham sits down with two inspiring leaders in the world of workplace wellbeing: Jen Fisher and KeyAnna Schmiedl. They share their personal and professional journeys, offering a refreshing perspective on what it means to create workplaces which truly put people first. Jen Fisher is a best-selling author, award-winning podcaster and influential speaker. Formerly Deloitte US's first Chief Wellbeing Officer, she is a preeminent expert on work wellbeing, and we are thrilled that she has recently joined the World Wellbeing Movement as our US Brand Ambassador. KeyAnna is Workhuman's Chief Human Experience Officer, and a leading voice on bringing human connection, belonging, and recognition to work wellbeing. She has also featured on Fortune's 40 Under 40 list and was named a DEI Trailblazer by Business Insider. This episode tackles a pressing question: how can organisations prevent employee burnout and instead promote human sustainability and wellbeing? Together, we unpack the organisational barriers that stand in the way of progress, uncovering some of the root causes of poor workplace wellbeing, and urging leaders to stop over relying on individual level interventions that add more to an employees' (already very long) to-do lists. We discuss the essential ‘wellbeing leadership skillset' - skills that can be taught to leaders so that they are properly equipped to foster wellbeing and build happy and productive teams. Whether you're leading a team or advocating for change within your organisation, this conversation offers actionable insights to help workplaces move toward healthier, happier, and more sustainable futures. *** We are all Working on our Wellbeing daily, but not everyone has access to the latest cutting-edge research into the science of wellbeing … until now. In S5 E4 I am delighted to welcome Dr Anna Baverstock to the podcast, Anna is a consultant in community child health looking after children with complex neurodisability and their families. She has been an educational supervisor and Associate DME for support and wellbeing. She was invited to be a member of the NHS Staff and Learners' Mental Wellbeing Commission in 2019 (Mental Wellbeing Report | Health Education England (hee.nhs.uk)). Currently she is lead for senior doctor wellbeing and leadership within Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. Anna is a trained coach, mediator and Schwartz round facilitator. Her philosophy is how do we ensure the first patient of the shift and the last get the same kind, safe care? We must look after ourselves and our teams during our working day. A big part of this is how we connect to self and others especially when under pressure. Can we form brave spaces to enable honest conversation that enable growth and change? When not talking she loves to run, do yoga, read, draw and doodle often inspired by quotes or poems that resonate. In this wonderful conversation we discuss Anna's wellbeing leadership, mediation and coaching work. Key themes discussed here include : Deep listening - to understand and connect, not reply or control.Brave conversations- how can we lean into the challenging conversations including where there is conflict or we need to give or receive difficult feedback. As Anna tells it "Difficult conversations don't get easier, but we get braver" with practice.Connection- in her work to empower and support core work-unit leaders in healthcare and build kind, inclusive cultures where high challenge comes with high support, psychological safety is the means and the goal is connection and creating space for deep listening. Today I interview Nicholas Whitaker who shares his journey of finding his place in the world. He felt out of place in his hometown and decided to leave, which led him to Baltimore where he struggled with poverty and lived with a woman that was not a good fit. For years, he lived in unstable housing, including his car and squat buildings, while working in restaurants and coffee shops to make ends meet. During this period, he often turned to partying to escape reality. However, his perspective changed after experiencing hallucinogens, which sparked his interest in exploring consciousness and understanding his place in the world. Following his time in Baltimore, Nicholas moved to New York City to attend film school, where he discovered that he was more passionate about telling other people's stories than his own. This led him to become a documentary filmmaker, instructor, and teacher, working with various industries such as business, government, nonprofits, advocacy groups, universities, and even the Occupy Wall Street movement. Through his work, he aimed to give people a voice and help them tell their stories in a way that resonates with others. After meeting his partner, Nicholas relocated to Colorado to be closer to nature and have more space to process and deal with his experiences. Since 2013, he has been on a journey of self-discovery, learning how to help others through the experiences he has overcome and the things he has learned along the way. He describes his experience with hallucinogens as a catalyst moment for him to explore consciousness and better understand the world, which he has been investigating and discovering ever since. ________________________Nicholas is a Chief Wellbeing Officer and Coach helping tech workers and founders thrive in ambiguity. The role of the manager has evolved dramatically since the days of barking orders and closed doors. But with modern managers being tasked with managing productivity, morale, development…are we asking too much? Today's debate digs into how responsible managers should be for the emotional wellbeing of their team members.Arguing in favor of managers taking on this emotional labor is debater Eli Mishkin, joined by workplace wellness consultant Laura Putnam who shares just how much your manager already affects your wellbeing (…and even your heart health!). Debating against this responsibility is Marshall Walker Lee with support from Dr. Mahreen Khan, a Senior Researcher in the People Insights Team at Atlassian, who explains the risks of putting too much on managers.

In these unprecedented times, well-being isn’t something we can outsource. We all have the power to prioritize our mental and physical health. It goes without saying that this has been a stressful year for everybody. We all have our unique challenges, and we all react to stress differently — but we can all benefit from strategies that make it easier to prioritize our well-being. think everyone needs to take on this same leadership role when it comes to their own lives. So what is well-being? For me, it means taking a holistic approach, focusing on body, mind, purpose, and financial health. The truth is, although we generally know what we should be doing to take care of ourselves, we often don’t do it. And that’s because we’re not strategic; we’re not intentional about it. But the problem is that with the pace of our modern lives, day after day gets away from us and we fall to the bottom of our priority list. Our tendency as human beings is to take care of everything and everyone else before taking care of ourselves. And when we allow that to happen, we can pay a heavy price. Daily stress can become chronic stress, and before you know it, that can lead to burnout. But your path to realizing you need to nurture your own well-being doesn’t have to involve burning out first. The key is to create a mindful and intentional system for being in charge of your well-being. WIHI - A Podcast from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement
Date: March 8, 2018 Featuring: Kate FitzPatrick, DNP, RN, ACNP, NEA-BC, FAAN, Chief Nursing Officer, University of Vermont Medical Center Teri Pipe, PhD, RN, Dean, College of Nursing & Health Innovation and Chief Wellbeing Officer, Arizona State University Part of the appeal of mindfulness is the simplicity of its central tenet: bringing awareness and focused attention to the present moment. Mindfulness also offers a measure of control when everything else feels out of control. As stress-reduction and other health benefits of mindfulness become better known, clinicians are discovering that they, too, need new ways to deal with stress…often on the fly. Practicing mindfulness can be restorative in the middle of a hectic day, create mental space to be more tuned into patients, and reduce the likelihood of medical errors. So, what does practicing mindfulness look like, in practice? On the March 8 episode of WIHI, Mindfulness and Patient Safety, we learned from two leading experts on how mindfulness can intersect with the health care workforce, their tasks, and their interactions with patients.
Recorded in July 2017 and just before writing Chief Wellbeing Officer in August and September, Steven and Rory discuss their inspiration the past several years and what they hope to achieve in the book. They discuss Universitas Telefónica, business today and how to create a more human-centric future of work.
