Previously on faculty with the University of Guelph, Christensen Hughes has 25 years of progressive academic leadership experience, first as a professor, then as the Founding Dean of the Gordon S. Canadian culture is a culture of comfort. It's being sold to us everywhere we look. We're encouraged to do what we want, when we want, with whomever we want. If something is uncomfortable, we want to avoid it at all costs. The Christian faith, though, is just that: uncomfortable. This week we begin a four-part series called Uncomfortable: The Awkward and Essential Challenge of Christian Community. We were built for community, but our desire for comfort often leads us to distance ourselves from one another. Could it be that your dream of church is the very thing that is keeping you from experiencing the joy and blessings of church?

The Awkward and Essential Challenge of Christian Community Love = Sacrifice Jesus will lead you through the discomforts of growing in generosity. Jesus will lead you through the discomforts of facing your fears. Mark 8:31–38 (NIV) He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.” Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels.” 1 John 4:10 (ESV) In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Romans 5:6–10 (NIV) You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him! For if, while we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! “The Cross was the place where God and sinful man merged with a tremendous collision and where the way to life was opened. But all the cost and pain of the collision was absorbed by the heart of God.” ― Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for His Highest 1 John 3:16–18 (NIV) This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. 2 Corinthians 5:15 (NIV) And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.

The Awkward and Essential Challenge of Christian Community: Understand the requirement. Count the Cost "Jesus, I am yours totally, whatever that means." Embrace the Uncomfortable Luke 14:25–33 (ESV) "Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them, “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.' Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace. So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple." “I didn't go to religion to make me happy. I always knew a bottle of Port would do that. If you want a religion to make you feel really comfortable, I certainly don't recommend Christianity.” - CS Lewis John 4:14 (NIV) "But whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life." "Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you get neither." – CS Lewis

The Wisdom Pyramid: Feeding Your Soul in a Post-Truth World is a plan for stabilizing a sick society by making us wiser. The online world is a disaster of untrustworthy information. The glut, the speed, the orientation of digital information all lead to epistemological chaos. How can we know anything?  Short answer: We don’t need more information. We need more wisdom. We need a diet built around knowledge-intake that actually cultivates wisdom. We need for our mental and spiritual health what the Food Pyramid was for our physical health: guidance for what to eat and what not to eat and in what proportions, so we can become healthier and wiser. Brett McCracken is a senior editor and director of communications for The Gospel Coalition. He is the author of The Wisdom Pyramid: Feeding Your Soul in a Post-Truth World(Crossway, 2021), Uncomfortable: The Awkward and Essential Challenge of Christian Community (Crossway, 2017), Hipster Christianity: When Church & Cool Collide (Baker, 2010), and Gray Matters: Navigating the Space Between Legalism & Liberty (Baker, 2013). He has written for The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Huffington Post, CNN.com, Christianity Today, and many other publications. A graduate of Wheaton College and UCLA (M.A. in Cinema & Media Studies), Brett lives in Santa Ana, California with his wife Kira and two sons, Chet and Ira. He is an elder at Southlands Church Santa Ana. Brett loves movies, particularly those by Terrence Malick (or those with a Malickean sensibility). Other things Brett enjoys: Marilynne Robinson, the Inklings, Friday Night Lights, autumn, all things Kansas City (where he grew up), reading and writing in coffeeshops, history, art museums, food, hiking, traveling, planning trip itineraries, curating music playlists, and making things better by editing. What is the true source of wisdom?Today's world has more and more information readily available, but less and less wisdom. Many people seek to acquire wisdom from easily accessible sources such as social media and popular culture but are often misled. How should Christians acquire wisdom in today's media-saturated culture?Inspired by the concept of the food pyramid, Brett McCracken presents a biblical paradigm for wisdom in today's distracted age, illustrating his argument through a “wisdom pyramid.” McCracken suggests a balanced, healthy diet of information from sources ranked in order of importance—the Bible, the church, nature, books, beauty, and lastly, the Internet and social media. Solomon prayed for wisdom, and the Lord granted his request. Oh, how we need more Solomons in our day! At least the early Solomon, before all the foreign wives.Brett McCracken is here to help with his new book, The Wisdom Pyramid: Feeding Your Soul in a Post-Truth World, published by Crossway. Brett works as director of communications and senior editor for arts and culture with The Gospel Coalition. You may also know him from his excellent earlier books, especially Uncomfortable: The Awkward and Essential Challenge of Christian Community, which I strongly recommend. The Wisdom Pyramid is like the food pyramid, only for the health of our souls when it comes to our media diet. I have a hard time thinking of anything more urgently needed for the church than men and women saturated in Scripture, rooted in their local church, and amazed by the wonder of God’s creation. This is the lean protein we need in a world pushing Skittles and Doritos. Brett joins me on Gospelbound to discuss social media, books we disagree with, what makes the internet different, and more. This episode of Gospelbound is sponsored by The Good Book Company, publisher of The God Contest by Carl Laferton. This storybook will help children see how the God of the Bible proved himself to be the one true God. More information at thegoodbook.com.

Does your church make you uncomfortable? It’s easy to dream about the “perfect” church―a church that sings just the right songs set to just the right music before the pastor preaches just the right sermon to a room filled with just the right mix of people who happen to agree with you on just about everything. Chances are your church doesn’t quite look like that. But what if instead of searching for a church that makes us comfortable, we learned to love our church, even when it’s challenging? What if some of the discomfort that we often experience is actually good for us? This book is a call to embrace the uncomfortable aspects of Christian community, whether that means believing difficult truths, pursuing difficult holiness, or loving difficult people―all for the sake of the gospel, God’s glory, and our joy. Uncomfortable: The Awkward and Essential Challenge of Christian Community calls for Christians to embrace, rather than avoid, the necessity of grounding their faith in a local church context, however uncomfortable/awkward/frustrating it may be. What if we learned to love churches even when—or perhaps because—they challenge us and stretch us out of our comfort zones?  This book argues that believers who accept the uncomfortable and even awkward aspects of Christianity in the context of the local church—believing difficult truths, embracing sacrifice, pursuing holiness, and loving the people around them—are the ones who will see the church grow most significantly and the gospel advance most powerfully. Brett McCracken is a senior editor for The Gospel Coalition and author of Hipster Christianity: When Church & Cool Collide (Baker, 2010), Gray Matters: Navigating the Space Between Legalism & Liberty (Baker, 2013), and Uncomfortable: The Awkward and Essential Challenge of Christian Community (Crossway, 2017). He has written for The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Huffington Post, CNN.com, The Princeton Theological Review, Mediascape, Books & Culture, Christianity Today, The Gospel Coalition, Relevant, IMAGE Journal, Converge, Mere Orthodoxy, ERLC, Canon & Culture and Q Ideas. He speaks and lectures frequently at universities, churches, and conferences. A graduate of Wheaton College and UCLA (M.A. in Cinema & Media Studies), Brett is currently pursuing a master’s in theology at Talbot School of Theology. Brett and his wife Kira live in Santa Ana, California and are active in their local church, Southlands, where Brett serves as a pastor/elder. Brett loves movies, particularly those by Terrence Malick (or those with a Malickean sensibility). Other things Brett enjoys: Marilynne Robinson, the Inklings, Kansas Jayhawk basketball, the Kansas City Royals, reading and writing in coffeeshops, history, art museums, food, hiking, traveling, planning trip itineraries and making things better by editing.

Sometimes it feels like “mom world” is another planet. A nursing shield? An all-terrain stroller? Funny-shaped food? It seems easier to build friendships with women in our season of life, but the gospel gives us a bigger picture of community. In this episode, Emily and Laura interview Elizabeth Woodson about building flourishing friendships with women in other seasons of life—particularly singles. Elizabeth is a Bible teacher who writes, teaches, and helps to develop leaders at The Village Church and serves as the Director of Resources for the Sparrow Conference. Christian moms and singles can have the most important thing in common: our faith in Christ. So press in a little deeper with a woman in a different season and enjoy God’s gift of community.   VIEW TRANSCRIPT   MENTIONED ON THE SHOW: Elizabeth Woodson’s website Elizabeth on Instagram & Twitter The Village Church Sparrow Conference 2019 RELATED ARTICLES, RESOURCES, AND CONTENT: Related R|M resources: “God’s Grace Beyond our ‘Mom Tribes,’" - Abby Hummel, Risen Motherhood “The Gospel Comes with a House Key,” - Rosaria Butterfield, Risen Motherhood “When We’re Offended: The Cost of Being a Peacemaker,” - Lauren Weir, Risen Motherhood “Members, Not Measures: A Call to Own One Another’s Joys and Sorrows,” Abbey Wedgeworth, Risen Motherhood “Moms Make Peace Through Christ,” - Emily Jensen, Risen Motherhood Ep. 38, Friendship & Motherhood - Risen Motherhood Ep. 43, Serving Others Right Where You’re At - Risen Motherhood Ep. 55, Hospitality in the Little Years - Risen Motherhood Ep. 65, Finding Your Tribe: Momma, Who is Your Primary Community? - Risen Motherhood Around the internet: Messy Beautiful Friendships: Finding and Nurturing Deep and Lasting Relationships, - Christine Hoover Life Together, - Dietrich Bonhoeffer Uncomfortable: The Awkward and Essential Challenge of Christian Community, - Brett McCracken “6 Costs of Real Friendship,” - Jen Thorn, Christianity Today “Loneliness, Friendship, and the Goodness of God,” - Melissa Kruger, TGC “Woman Enough for Friendship,” - Jasmine Holmes, Fathom Magazine Ep. 17, By Faith with Christine Hoover: On Friendships for Moms with Emily & Laura - By Faith RM APPLY QUESTIONS It’s great to have a close group of mom friends, but God also designed Christian community to include a variety of ages, experiences, and gifts. Women in different seasons of life can have flourishing friendships if we’re willing to find common interests, have honest conversations, and build on our shared love of Christ. We’re made to be in community and to encourage our sisters-in-Christ, and that happens across every season of life. Do you have friendships with women who are in different seasons of life than you? If so, how can you further invest in these friendships? If not, can you think of any women who share similar interests with you in other areas? Consider inviting one of them to join you for coffee, bread baking, running, etc. There are common threads in all our lives. We all experience pain, loss, and difficulty; and we all experience joy, thankfulness, and hope. The gospel meets us where we are in our different situations and enables us to mourn and rejoice with one another. How is a shared love of Christ the foundation for friendship? How does it connect you to other sisters-in-Christ who may be experiencing different life events than you? Moms and singles can be tempted to run away from hard relationships, but God calls us to consider one another as more important than ourselves. What would it look like to approach a difficult friend with grace? How can you find out how to love that person well? If we want to be true friends, we have to open up our lives to others—which means opening our homes too. What are your expectations for the “right conditions” to be hospitable? Are these biblical requirements or heart idols? How can you open up space this week to invite a single woman over? All women are told to have spiritual children in the faith regardless of our life seasons. We’re to steward the information God gives us by pouring into a younger sister-in-Christ. Is discipleship a regular part of your life? How can you make time for it and who might you “do life” with? FOR MORE: To subscribe: on iOS, go to our iTunes page and subscribe.
