Hosting in-person events that offer value creates meaningful connections on a personal level. Quotes [06:39] - "One of the biggest ways any firm can become a trusted source, where someone will take the phone call or the sales meeting first, is to give something of value away before you ask. I always say give, give, give, then ask." ~ Samantha Russell [09:45] - "AI has completely changed the game of how people get information. SEO is probably the thing that's Wild West the most, more than anything else." ~ Samantha Russell [28:33] - "Content is going to become even crazier, and the tools that we use to service clients are going to become so hyper-productive. We are going to go back to thinking about experiences because so many other things are going to become commodities, and the experiences are going to become crucial." ~ Samantha Russell Links Samantha Russell on LinkedIn FMG Suite Salesforce Wealthbox Redtail Technology Rubin Miller Peltoma Capital Partners How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk Connect with our hosts Milemarker.co Kyle on LinkedIn Jud on LinkedIn Subscribe and stay in touch Apple Podcasts Spotify YouTube Produce game-changing content with Turncast Turncast helps your company grow by producing top-quality content and fostering transformative conversations. In today's episode of “The Runway Decade Podcast”, hosts Bill Bush and Pete Bush, advisors at Horizon Financial Group, talk with guest, Susan Theder - Chief Marketing and Experience Officer at FMG Suite. She talks about how she is helping financial advisors who are in their 50s and marketing their businesses and how she is helping the advisors build their brand. Episode Highlights 01:59 –Pete enquires, what Susan was thinking when she was going for a History degree at that time. 03:08 – What was your sport as you were an athlete, enquires Bill. 04:03 – Bill asks, what stood out and made Susan take the path. 06:15 – One of her greatest successes started as one of her greatest failures, states Susan. 08:08 – Everybody's going to be wrong at some point, just don't stay wrong. 09:40 - What ways have you changed since your 30s and 40s? 11:38 – Pete enquires, when we turn in our 50s, all of a sudden retirement starts to come into the picture, did you have any of those thoughts? 14:40 – Susan states, all these things make you worried but also a reason to work with a financial advisor who can help us think and model out a different scenario. 16:01 – Susan is currently on the boards of two companies and it is one of the biggest accomplishments in her life and she'd love to do more of that. 19:48 – The guest discusses the challenges of learning new marketing techniques, and how they are going about resolving that. 21:14 – Susan points out, we play a pretty meaningful role in helping advisors build that digital brand and market effectively. Three Key Points Those are hard moments when we know we've made a mistake and we're going to get, we have to just kind of think put a stake in the ground and say we made a mistake, those are going to be behind us and we're going to look forward and try something else. Susan shares in what ways she has changed since her 30s or 40s. Now she is more confident than what other people think. She is more able to make choices based on happiness versus money. She just makes more decisions based on what she wants. The vast majority of financial advisors would rather have somebody do the marketing for them. They just want somebody to take it off their plate and do it effectively. Tweetable Quotes “I started in commercial lending and corporate finance and it was okay.” – Susan Theder “My favorite part of everyday was thinking about how to market and it is a big part of any financial advisor's business which is why I've now ended up where I am”. - Susan Theder “Our executive team and I changed vendors to FMG and it ended up being one of the best solutions that I think Advisor Group is delivered to its advisors.” – Susan Theder “Another question that I asked, would I do the same when I make the same decision today?” – Susan Theder “I can't imagine how anybody could reach retirement and successfully get through it without a financial advisor.' – Susan Theder “Now financial advisors are going to have Google reviews.” – Susan Theder Resources Mentioned Horizon Financial Group Website Contact Information Bill Bush Pete Bush Susan Theder Email: susan.theder@fmgsuite.com Podcast Editing

In this episode, Jack Sharry talks with Samantha Russell, Chief Evangelist at FMG Suite, and Matt Nollman, VP of Marketing at LifeYield. The two share their expertise on all things digital communication. Six years ago, Samantha's husband stumbled upon a problem with seemingly no solution. Every advisor at a firm had an identical web presence. So he created Twenty Over Ten, an easy-to-use website platform for financial advisors. Sam hopped on board to lead sales and marketing and when Twenty Over Ten sold to FMG Suite, Sam shifted to Chief Evangelist, or, as she likes to think of it, Chief Educator. Matt began his career in tech startups before joining LifeYield and working to expand the company's digital reach and online presence. Matt also aligned LifeYield's marketing and sales with its strongest revenue stream and spearheaded LifeYield's shift into enterprise. Both Samantha and Matt understand the importance of reaching people through effective communication and taking digital risks. Samantha, Matt, and Jack discuss why advisors should become educators, why marketing can no longer be an afterthought, and the most impactful (and surprising) marketing strategy for firms, advisors, and beyond. "Digital marketing no longer should be a line item that kind of gets whatever is leftover in your budget. If you want to grow and grow intentionally and find the clients that will be the best fit for your business, you need to put your money where your mouth is. We see a lot of financial advisory firms, the average is spending 1 to 2 percent of revenue per year on their marketing budget. But the growth firms, the firms that are actually adding new clients more than they're losing them, they're spending about 5 to 10 percent.” ~ Samantha Russell Main takeaways Hiring a great copywriter is one of the best ways to improve your business's communication. In a world where everyone is always inundated with information, engaging people through text is invaluable. When it comes to digital channels and strategies, your firm doesn't need to be everywhere at once, especially if your marketing team is small and lean. Figure out a scalable way to communicate that works for your business. If you have multiple channels, make sure those channels work together to tell one cohesive story with complimentary messaging. Digital referrals are invaluable. If you don't have a strong web presence, you're out of the race for a client's attention before the race even begins. Even if you can't measure its success right away, explore new audiences and new channels. It may lead to insights and value that can't be quantified.
