Beyond Food Franchises: Exploring Non-Food Opportunities While food franchises are undeniably our most popular category, franchising extends far beyond the realm of food. Over the years, we've featured numerous exceptional franchises in the service industry. These businesses, though often highly profitable, present unique marketing challenges. Our podcast begins with a discussion inspired by Dr. Martin J. McDermott's LinkedIn article, "You Had Me at Hello: The Power of the Follow-Up." This piece highlights the critical role of post-service communication in fostering customer loyalty. Using compelling anecdotes—like a dentist's thoughtful follow-up call or a repairman's check-in after servicing a refrigerator—Dr. McDermott underscores how small gestures can leave a lasting impact. He also introduces the RATER model (Reliability, Assurance, Tangibles, Empathy, Responsiveness) as a framework for assessing service quality, emphasizing how even brief interactions can strengthen customer relationships. Drawing from his expertise as a marketing professor and franchising authority, he concludes by celebrating the often-overlooked importance of a simple greeting and timely follow-up. Next, we sit down with Jon Ostenson, a consultant, entrepreneur, and author specializing in non-food franchising. As a former Inc. 500 Franchise President and multi-brand franchisee, Jon offers invaluable perspectives on this sector. We explore insights from his latest book, Non-Food Franchising: The Better Path to Franchise Ownership. Finally, in the second segment of the episode, we feature an excerpt from our celebrated podcast series, Great Quotes in Franchising.

I recently discovered Google's latest AI innovation, NotebookLM. This new tool has generated a lot of excitement in both the tech and podcasting communities—and for good reason. Users can input any type of raw text, whether it's a short story or article. NotebookLM will transform it into a podcast. Each "podcast" features the same male and female voices, mimicking the tone and rhythm with natural-sounding filler words like “uhms” and “aahs” Occasionally, you might notice a glitch in the speech or repeated explanations from the virtual hosts. Curious about its capabilities, we decided to put NotebookLM to the test by inputting a recent article featuring Telephone Doctor Nancy Friedman and Dr. Martin J. McDermott. Give it a listen and ask yourself—if you weren't told this was AI-generated, would you have known? Today's podcast is a conversation of a podcast interview between Nancy Friedman, known as the "Telephone Doctor," and Dr. Martin J. McDermott, the owner of Franchise Interviews. The interview covers a wide range of topics, including their personal backgrounds, career paths, and insights into the fields of franchising, marketing, and customer service. The interview also touches upon the role of positive thinking, the importance of effective communication, and the impact of theater on personal development. The interview provides valuable insights into the lives and work of two successful professionals who are passionate about their respective areas of expertise. In Part Two, we play a clip from our popular Great Quotes in Franchising podcast. We are meeting with Ryan Sawchuk, founder of ReUp Living, to discuss how ReUp is disrupting the real estate market, expansion through franchising, and plans to open an experience center in Las Vegas this fall. ReUp is a pre-listing solution for homeowners, buyers, and real estate agents that increases a home's value by remodeling it with no risk or upfront costs before selling. Founded in 2021 by Ryan Sawchuk, ReUp began franchising in 2022 and has set out to transform the real estate process by updating tired homes with turnkey home improvements that require no upfront costs. Unlike traditional real estate transactions, ReUp covers the renovation costs and then splits the profit from increased home values, ensuring higher gains from real estate sales. The company can also simultaneously allow buyers to customize the new home while financing is closing. ReUp takes care of all renovation costs, sourcing, project management, and communication, while only using licensed and insured general contractors on all projects. ReUp is making home improvements accessible and stress-free so sellers can increase the value of their homes, buyers can customize and update the home of their dreams, and real estate agents can maximize their profitability through higher property values post-renovation. Did you know Franchise Interviews started off as a newsletter? Thanks to technology, the hosts at GoogleLM review one of our first newsletter interview with Roy Hibberd. The interview with franchise expert and attorney Roy Hibberd focuses on crucial advice for prospective franchisees. Hibberd emphasizes the importance of self-reflection to assess whether one is suited for entrepreneurship, noting that owning a franchise requires a 24/7 commitment. He also highlights that franchisees must often wear many hats, as they lack the same support found in corporate environments. Hibberd discusses franchise brokers, noting that while some brokers provide valuable guidance, others may push certain franchises due to commission incentives. He advises thorough research and diligence, encouraging prospective franchisees to speak with both current and former franchisees to gain insights into the system. Additionally, Hibberd stresses the value of the Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) as a critical tool for making informed decisions. He encourages franchisees to consult franchise experts for deeper evaluations of the systems they are considering. Finally, Hibberd explains that some elements of franchise agreements are negotiable, contrary to popular belief, particularly in smaller or newer franchise systems.

I am your host Marty McDermott and I am the president of Franchise Interviews. We have a great show. Well it seems like yesterday, but it was 17 years ago today that we launched our podcast Franchise Interviews. Don was calm and collected and brought a lot of knowledge and humor to the show. We will start off with a clip of an interview I did with Jaimie Jay of Stop Riding the Pine, which was one of my favorite podcasts. To date, Franchise Interviews has conducted over 800 interviews. Thanks everyone for your support and friendship.

We are meeting with Dan Doherty, Director of Operations and Vice President of Kelly's Roast Beef. Since Doherty could remember, he has always loved Kelly's Roast Beef. Their buttery roll filled with delicious roast beef, barbecue sauce, mayo, and cheese has been his go-to order since he was a boy. It was in the late 70s that he took his love for the brand and turned it into his summer job. From there, he learned valuable life lessons, such as the importance of a hard work ethic, that he has taken with him to the corporate side of the brand to extend its presence and make Kelly's a household name. Doherty, a Revere Beach native, says that in the brand's early days, Revere Beach was an amusement park, and Kelly's was the town's concession stand. Nobody was making or even thinking about a roast beef sandwich. Kelly's became a hub for Revere Beach and an integral part of the town as now prominent figures such as State Supreme Court Judges, Mayors of Revere, firefighters, police officers, and teachers have all worked at the beloved restaurant that has shaped many into outstanding members of the community. Doherty credits the brand and the hundreds of people he has worked with for over 40 years for his success. Since 1951, Kelly's Roast Beef has been delighting guests daily with our freshly prepared sandwiches, succulent seafood, crisp salads, fries, onion rings, and our legendary roast beef. With our flagship walk-up window still operating on the shores of Revere Beach, Massachusetts, Kelly's larger, suburban dine-in and drive-thru locations are reminiscent of our 1950s history, featuring carousel horses, colorful fish tanks, Revere Beach murals, and boardwalk nostalgia. Kelly's Roast Beef has been family-owned for over 60 years and operates five casual eateries in eastern Massachusetts. In Part two - Great Quotes in Franchising podcast.
Today's Great Quote in Franchising comes from Peter Baldine, the President of Moran Industries. Peter discusses some of the several advantages of franchising compared to non-franchise businesses are support and guidance.
Today's Great Quote in Franchising Comes from Mary Jane Riva, CEO of Pizza Factory. Mary Jane suggests aspiring entrepreneurs need to look under the hood before buying a franchise. Listen to this podcast to find out why. Partial Transcript Well, first, there are a couple of things. And one that as we're going through this journey ourselves from being a franchisee to the franchisor, it's understanding the roles of the franchisor versus the franchisee. That's important; what role are you playing versus the franchisor? And then, when you're looking at brands, the other thing for brands to me is really looking under the hood. Don't just look at all the stuff on the surface; dig down and see what extra charges there, you know, are they marking up stuff, you know, really evaluate a brand to a brand and not just the fluff kind of stuff you see on the top. And it's a lot of due diligence. But you know, ask the questions that will be once you're in there, you know, are they marking up the food product? Are they marking up advertising materials? You know, what are you paying? So, dig down and ask many more questions, and I would talk to many franchisees in the system and see how they feel about the franchisor and the brand itself. I would do a lot of due diligence with franchisees because they're the ones that are going to tell you.

Last month I posted on LinkedIn a conversation I had with my son titled “What is your favorite burger franchise?” I was surprised how many people enjoyed and responded to the post. It stated the following: Today my son Martin and I went hiking by the Delaware River. It is one of my favorite things to do in Lehigh Valley. My son caught me off guard today and said, “Dad, what is your favorite burger franchise?” I started our podcast Franchise Interviews before he was born. I never realized he took an interest or was paying attention all these years. It turned out to be a long and fun conversation. I never shared with everyone the results of our conversation. One of our favorites we shared in common is Jake's Wayback Burgers. Many years ago, we picked up Jake's Burgers for July 4th. Since that moment, it has kind of become a tradition to pick up Jake's on holidays like Memorial Day, which is four days away and July 4th. Of course, McDonald's was part of the conversation. In honor of Hamburger month, we are going to play our interview with Jake's and play a roundtable discussion on the movie called “The Founder”, the story of Ray Kroc and the McDonald brothers. Our next hike is scheduled for next week! Perhaps we will continue our conversation on franchising and podcasting. Have a happy Memorial Day weekend!
Did you miss our podcast with Tootl Transport Founder, President Michelle Dacy, and Steve Greenbaum, Board Member and Advisor? I was excited to have this opportunity to interview Michelle and Steve for several reasons. My dad suffered from Parkinson's disease. Getting him from Point A to Point B was complicated towards the end of this disease, so I think Tootl Transport is such an essential service. Next was my opportunity to interview Steve Greenbaum. I have been following Steve's career for a long time, and this was the first time I got to interview Steve. Tootl Transport has a strong advisory board. Besides Steve, other members include Brad Fishman, Debra Vilchis, and Jeff Matthews. As the nation's first special needs non-emergency transportation concept, Tootl is committed to providing individuals with temporary or permanent mobility and cognitive challenges with the reliable and comfortable rides they need. The brand has seen success with its two corporate locations in Milwaukee and Chicago and is looking to open 20 locations in 2023, choosing to focus on streamlining operations in its first year of franchising. Tootl approaches their business, employees, and customers through TREK, which stands for their core values of Trust, Respect, Empathy, and Kindness. According to the History Channel, Cinco de Mayo, is a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army's May 5, 1862, victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day, a popular misconception. Instead, it commemorates a single battle. The battle lasted from daybreak to early evening, and when the French finally retreated, they had lost nearly 500 soldiers. Cinco de Mayo is widely interpreted as celebrating Mexican culture and heritage in the United States, particularly in areas with substantial Mexican-American populations. We thought a great way to kick in Cinco de Mayo was to play our interviews with the Margaritas Mexican Restaurant franchise opportunity. Over the years, we had two chances to interview Margaritas Mexican Grill. Our first interview was with Bob Hofmeister, President and COO of Margaritas. Next, we will play a clip of our interview with John Pelletier, Founder and CEO of Margaritas. According to the Margaritas website, for over 40 years, Margaritas has built a cult following by staying focused and not chasing trends. Margaritas brings the spirit of Mexico to the U.S. through our scratch-made Mexican food, warm hospitality, celebratory environment, and of course - our world-famous Margaritas! While their decor and technology have changed over the decades - the big idea has always been the same. Deliver great Mexican food, fun, and the world's best Marg! https://www.history.com/topics/holidays/cinco-de-mayo Introduction Music Music by FreeGroove from Pixabay
