Government's Future Frontiers
How government and innovators are building community resilience in the face of climate change

Government's Future Frontiers

Today's guests: Michael Flynn, Global Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Government lead for Deloitte Ireland Jamie Sawchuk, national leader for Government and Public Services Alliances and Ecosystems for Deloitte Canada Carolyn Murnaghan, national leader for Climate Adaptation and Resilience for Deloitte Canada Christina Crue, emergency manager and advisory principal for Deloitte & Touche LLP Justin Dawe, founder and CEO of Earth Force Technologies   Communities across the world are feeling the effects of climate change. That's unlikely to change any time soon. According to the World Meteorological Organization, 2023 was the hottest year on record. The National Centers for Environmental Information estimates there's a 97% chance that 2024 will break that record. The result of this warming—an increasing number of extreme weather events. The world is seeing more of these events, and they are increasing in severity. Governments, private sector innovators, and communities are working together to respond to, track, and mitigate the effects of extreme weather events. Solutions range from the tried and tested, like levees and spillways, to new and emerging technology, like AI and advanced sensing technology. To discuss these solutions, Tanya Ott is joined by Michael Flynn, Global Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Government lead for Deloitte Ireland; Jamie Sawchuk, national leader for Government and Public Services Alliances and Ecosystems for Deloitte Canada; Carolyn Murnaghan, national leader for Climate Adaptation and Resilience for Deloitte Canada; Christina Crue, emergency manager and advisory principal for Deloitte & Touche LLP; and Justin Dawe, founder and CEO of Earth Force Technologies. They discuss the challenges communities face and the potential solutions that may make a difference. Perhaps more importantly, they focus on the mindset shift that this new weather reality is bringing to communities all over the world. “Traditionally. you buy insurance for something that might happen once every 30 years,” said Sawchuk. “But when it's happening once every other year, once every five years, we need to respond differently. We need to build differently. We need to plan differently. So, we're getting ahead of the risk versus just responding to the risk. And I think that's foundational. We need to mitigate the risk versus just buy insurance against it.”

Disrupting The Real Estate Market - Our Interview with Ryan Sawchuk of ReUp

We are meeting with Ryan Sawchuk, founder of ReUp Living, to discuss how ReUp is disrupting the real estate market, expansion through franchising, and plans to open an experience center in Las Vegas this fall. ReUp is a pre-listing solution for homeowners, buyers, and real estate agents that increases a home's value by remodeling it with no risk or upfront costs before selling. Founded in 2021 by Ryan Sawchuk, ReUp began franchising in 2022 and has set out to transform the real estate process by updating tired homes with turnkey home improvements that require no upfront costs. Unlike traditional real estate transactions, ReUp covers the renovation costs and then splits the profit from increased home values, ensuring higher gains from real estate sales. The company can also simultaneously allow buyers to customize the new home while financing is closing. ReUp takes care of all renovation costs, sourcing, project management, and communication, while only using licensed and insured general contractors on all projects. ReUp is making home improvements accessible and stress-free so sellers can increase the value of their homes, buyers can customize and update the home of their dreams, and real estate agents can maximize their profitability through higher property values post-renovation. In part two, we play a clip from our Great Quotes in Franchising podcast.

Grant was bored by the spring game while Lee explains why the spring game was pretty interesting to him (1:25). We get into the breakdown beginning with Jackson Arnold and his play (8:30). Lee wants to talk about Michael Hawkins because there was a spring narrative about him looking really good, yet we didn't see much evidence of that in the spring game (23:15). The offensive line with Jackson Arnold played really well. Overall we're encouraged by what we saw from the OL (25:35). Deion Burks was terrific, but no other pass catchers really stood out (33:20). Sawchuk, Hicks, and Franklin all looked good at running back. The room looks to be in better shape than last season. Have we seen the last of Jovantae Barnes in an OU uniform (43:30)? We switch over to the defense and begin with the defensive line. Lee liked a good amount of what he saw, while Grant is very skeptical of the interior part of the line. Can the Sooners pick up some of these big D-linemen in the portal (56:45)? Not much to say about the linebackers aside from Kobie McKinzie looked good. Grant is still high on Jaren Kanak. Was he at fault for the second Burks TD? Lee could not figure out what coverage OU was in on the two long TDs (1:08:00). Thoughts on the OU secondary. Lee thinks Dez Malone may be a starter at corner. Grant liked what he saw from RSJ, but overall the secondary was slightly disappointing (1:13:50). We read your "3 Word Reviews" from the WoE Facebook page (1:19:10). Final thoughts on who stood out on offense. Grant wants RPOs to be eliminated (1:23:15). Final thoughts on defensive standouts (1:29:50). The kicking game will continue to be a massive question mark. Are you interested in the Miami (OH) kicker in the portal? Plus we go over other final disappointing thoughts from the scrimmage (1:31:50). Shane Whitter and Justin Harrington recently entered the transfer portal (1:39:40). | Like the show on Facebook: @westofeverest | Follow Grant on Twitter: @GrantBenson25 | Follow Lee on Twitter: @LeeBensonTweets

“Given all the things procurement is doing, it does seem that a lot of their work tends to go unnoticed or be undervalued or is boiled down to that one bottom-line savings number. The truth is that procurement is involved with a lot.” - Vishal Patel, VP Product Marketing, Ivalua Even though big events like the pandemic, inflation, global supply chain disruptions, and geopolitical conflict have reminded everyone how relevant procurement is to the organization, the full value procurement offers is still often misunderstood and underestimated.  Why is procurement so frequently undervalued when their impact can be felt across the business, not just to cost or risk management but also sustainability, product innovation, supply continuity, and business strategy?  To understand how shifting mindsets around procurement's value contribution are redefining their role in the business, Philip Ideson and Kelly Barner spoke with Chris Sawchuk, Principal and Global Procurement Advisory Practice Leader at The Hackett Group, and Vishal Patel, Vice President of Product Marketing at Ivalua.  In the episode, Chris and Vishal discuss:  New opportunities and approaches to performance measurement for procurement's value contribution beyond cost The deepening value of risk management and the need for nuanced approaches to risk beyond traditional metrics The evolving role of generative AI and emerging technologies as procurement's “co-pilots” in delivering value   Links: Subscribe to This Week in Procurement Chris Sawchuk on LinkedIn Vishal Patel on LinkedIn Watch Again: Redefining Procurement's Value and Shifting Mindsets Read: Generative AI and the Future of Procurement Value Creation

In 2015, her life was forever changed when, while biking, she was hit by a car as she trained for a triathlon. Her new life in a wheelchair meant relearning so much of what she and most of us take for granted. Everything from having a shower, to cooking, to tucking her kids in at night ... to putting on her socks. The journey through that, hard to imagine darkness, led her to a place where she made the decision to shine light on it all. This week we're joined in the studio by a strong woman, wife, mother, friend and founder of Sawchuk Accessible Solutions, Julie Sawchuk.

No opening take as the guys begin their look back at OU's 38-24 Alamo Bowl loss to Arizona (01:25). Let's start from the very beginning with OU's defense coming out in a 3-3-5 and almost immediately giving up a big pass play. The pass defense is still very much a concern, but credit to OU for shutting down Arizona's running game (03:30). Jackson Arnold's start was very underwhelming. There was a little good, but mostly bad as he threw a couple of interceptions (15:15). OU's offense started moving it on its 4th series which ended with a Gavin Sawchuk TD run (27:45). Kani Walker's interception didn't lead to anything because unfortunately OU turned the ball over immediately after in what was the start of a rough night for Jalil Farooq (30:20). It was good to see Sawchuk get out and run for 63 yards. This was the drive that ended with Nic Anderson's excellent TD catch (34:20). OU seemed to be figuring it out on defense. R Mason Thomas had a nice sack. The offense got a chance to score before the end of the first half but failed (40:05). OU's offense started the 2nd half with a bang. We saw some small parts of Arnold's game that we liked (47:40). We talk a little about Tawee Walker transferring to Wisconsin (51:20). Drake Stoops picked up a bunch of yards on 3rd down to extend OU's drive before the Sooners started to show signs of faltering in the red zone (53:40). This is the drive that changed everything. It started rough with Sawchuk tweaking his hamstring, and it ended with a flukey Arizona defensive TD. Arnold and the offense struggled the rest of the way, turning it over two more times, and that was the ballgame (1:00:50). Final stats, overall thoughts on the game and what it means (1:19:45). We read some of your "3 Word Reviews" (1:24:40). Lee gives his overall takeaways from Jackson Arnold's game, before Grant looks ahead to the offseason and would prefer not to drive away Farooq (1:31:30). | Like the show on Facebook: @westofeverest | Follow Grant on Twitter: @GrantBenson25 | Follow Lee on Twitter: @LeeBensonTweets

“It's important for providers to understand it's not just about providing technology, but a solution that actually drives value. They have a responsibility to ensure that the implementation and adoption go well because it has a long-term effect.”  - Chris Sawchuk, Principal and Global Procurement Advisory Practice Leader at The Hackett Group Evaluating P2P solution providers can be challenging, but it is critical for procurement to tailor how they assess and select their solutions to the specific needs and expectations of their stakeholders. Procurement should look for solution providers that fit into ongoing transformation initiatives and align with their organization's maturity level while also relying on data-driven benchmarking to evaluate their best options. Philip Ideson recently spoke with Andy Warzecha, Principal and Chief Market Intelligence Officer, Christopher Sawchuk, Principal and Global Procurement Advisory Practice Leader, and Rick Gardner, Director, from The Hackett Group. In the opening take, Lee points out that Oklahoma has improved a very important statistic drastically through four games. Then Grant joins to talk about teammates celebrating each other, a brief NFL sidebar, and PFF College showing that they're not an outlet that has a whole lot of credibility (3:20). What do we make of Jeff Lebby and Ted Roof not having press conferences anymore? Lincoln Riley recently suspended a reporter, which we obviously have to rip Riley for (9:50). Let's talk about the OU RB situation-- it's still weird. Lee slightly amends his take on Marcus Major from the Cincinnati game (also some Dillon Gabriel zone read talk), and Brent Venables seems uncomfortable answering questions about Barnes and Sawchuk not playing much (17:10). Savion Byrd is good to go, and what's the deal with Reggie Pearson moving forward (30:45)? Grant provides an update on where OU stands in a lot of analytical rankings. The defense is much better, but is it all because of a soft schedule (35:00)? Grant was watching old OU-ISU games recently. We dig into this week's game by talking about the Cyclones truly terrible offense (47:50). Iowa State's defense seems to be very good again, although they haven't faced any good offenses yet. Even though on paper OU should win easily, will the Sooners be looking ahead to Texas (1:06:20)? We read a couple of comments from the WoE Facebook page (1:16:20). Let's take a look at the Big 12, beginning with a weird line in the Cin-BYU game. Texas Tech is in desperation mode. UCF is a double-digit favorite over Baylor and is WVU-TCU a trap (1:19:10)? Who plays Cheetah if those guys are unable to play? Gentry Williams is available this week. Lee shares some impressive 3rd down defense stats (9:25). Tulsa's offense has been operating without its starting QB. This is a game where OU's defense can have some fun. Will they (21:50)? Jeff Lebby says they want to get Jovantae Barnes and Gavin Sawchuk going this week. We got an answer as to why Jaquaize Pettaway didn't do anything against SMU. Marcus Major is what he is. Does Jeff Lebby know what he wants this OU offense to be (25:30)? Is there any reason to be concerned with OU's offensive line? We read a listener comment about J. Barnes vs. M. Major, and one listener tells us he's going to the Cincinnati game (36:30). We look around the Big 12. Grant thinks Cincinnati may be good. Can BYU score against Arkansas? Lee got a bad number in the Texas-Wyoming game, Houston may be the worst team in the Big 12, and could Kansas be one of the best teams in the Big 12 by season end (45:45)? We each went 3-2 last week making picks. This week's slate includes Penn State-Illinois/K-State-Missouri/Minnesota-UNC/Washington-Michigan St./Tennessee-Florida (56:20). |Like the show on Facebook: @westofeverest | Follow Grant on Twitter: @GrantBenson25 | Follow Lee on Twitter: @LeeBensonTweets
