Interview by Kris PetersAt the turn of the last century - around the same time the world was supposed to succumb to the flash in the pan that was the Y2K bug - a group of four Sydney punk reprobates called Frenzal Rhomb were plotting their own assault on the world.But instead of technology, this was a stealth attack by music.After previously making their name as carefree, wreckless, uncompromising punk rockers through albums Coughing Up A Storm, Not So Tough Now and Meet The Family, Frenzal Rhomb elected to go a little more mainstream on their fourth album, A Man's Not A Camel. So much so that the album contained a bona fide ballad - I Miss My Lung, and another on the cusp of being a ballad with You Are Not My Friend.Granted, A Man's Not A Camel provided some staple Frenzal moments with songs like It's Up To You, Do You Wanna Fight Me and the irresistible I Know Why Dinosaurs Became Extinct, and it also contained more than enough lashings of Frenzal humour, but it was also far enough on the right side of the musical ledger to have the song Never Had So Much Fun nominated for an ARIA Award in the Best Pop Release category.I shit you not. Thankfully a singing budgie by the name of Kylie Minogue pipped them at the post, otherwise who knows how far down the rabbit hole Frenzal Rhomb would have gone?And now, 26 years after it first came out, Frenzal Rhomb are celebrating the 25th (ish) Birthday of A Man's Not A Camel with an extensive Australian tour that will see the band travelling to places some of you might not even know exist.HEAVY tracked down Frenzal frontman Jason Whalley to take a trip down memory lane."That record seemed to resonate with people," Whalley nodded, stroking his chin. "It had all those songs on it like Never Had So Much Fun and You Are Not My Friend and I Miss My Lung and all that jazz. There's a lot of songs on there that, let's be honest, weren't very good. But it had a few songs on there that seemed to resonate with people. We are doing this tour where we're celebrating this record, but to be honest, we play all the good songs off that record every time we play anyway. We are pulling out some deep cuts too. I've had to relearn a lot of lyrics. I actually looked up the lyrics on the internet to try and figure out what they were, to try and relearn them."We ask if that means the whole of A Man's Not A Camel album will be played in full on tour."100% not," he countered. "We wouldn't do that to our audience. There's a few songs on there that just have not stood the test of time. I mean, even a week after it was released, we weren't playing them. When you see bands doing their whole album, I'm always like, come on, mate, they weren't all bangers."In the full interview, Jay discussed Frenzal Rhomb's upcoming shows in more detail, revealing the tour will include 25 shows in various locations that were missed during their last tour, allowing the band to reconnect with fans. Frenzal Rhomb are as reliable as Grandma's recipe for scones, and probably twice as durable.For more than 30 years now, Australia's masters of punk and ska have gone about their business unchecked, churning out consistently high-quality albums with tongue more than firmly planted in cheek.The lyrics - while relatively easy to digest - are also cutting, honest, raw and delivered with the spite of a rattlesnake yet still Frenzal Rhomb can seemingly do no wrong.After appearing at nearly every known Australian music festival in recent times, the Frenzal train was finally docked at an International festival in the form of Good Things 2023, and despite drawing the short straw and having to play at the same time as Limp Bizkit, still managed to draw plenty of punters to their corner of the arena over the three shows.Kris and Simon from HEAVY managed to catch frontman Jason Whalley not long before the third and final show, and he was in typically laconic form.NOTE - due to interviews being conducted backstage at a music festival the audio may not be 100% crisp at times

Interview by Kyra-Jade Coombs and Kris PetersSpring Loaded has come and gone for another year, and what a fun time it was!And how could it not be, with Spiderbait, Eskimo Joe, Frenzal Rhomb, Shihad, Magic Dirt, Ratcat, Bodyjar and Screamfeeder all on hand?This year HEAVY was granted exclusive backstage access to speak with the bands as their day progressed, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those involved Empire Touring, On The Map PR, the bands, their management, and, of course, the team of Neville Pearce (Everblack Media), Kyra-Jade Coombs, Cory Stevenson and Sam Totman.It was a fantastic day and getting the chance to chat with the bands at their own leisure in their own environment provided many highlights, but none more so than our chat with MC and Frenzal Rhomb guitarist Lindsay McDougall who joined us to talk about everything from his role as MC to Frenzal's new album The Cup Of Pestilence, their current tour for the album, their set on the day, coming up with consistently quality new material, having fun in general, and just about anything else that came to mind.

Interview by Erin EddyThere aren't too many bands that are as Australian as Frenzal Rhomb. The tongue-in-cheek humour, the larrikin antics, the accented vocals, and the disorderly, rowdy energy are all traits synonymous with the punk rockers, who have been spreading their infectious high jinks and raucous music for 31 years now.Here at HEAVY, we took advantage of a moment with guitarist Lindsay McDougall while he was on the job at ABC Radio, Illawarra.“I'm speaking to you on the ABC's dime; That's right, this is taxpayer funded right now!” Lindsay cheekily told us.The purpose of our chat was to speak about the upcoming Spring Loaded Festival, which Frenzal Rhomb is featured on, as well as Lindsay himself being the MC for the event. But it's hard to speak with someone like Lindsay, from a band with as much history as Frenzal, and not slide a little off track and reflect on days past, especially if you're a long-time fan.In the following interview you'll hear discussion on the 2001 Big Day Out, stealing Killing Heidi's vodka, their VHS The Travelling Flea Circus and anecdotes about past experiences touring overseas.When we did speak of Spring Loaded, Lindsay expressed that the familiarity of sharing the line up with old friends is a definite joy.“It's nice playing with a bunch of old pricks that have the same level of cynicism as us,” he jokes, “I do wonder where the high jinks on this tour will come from and from which bands will the nonsense originate from.”“I'm excited to see who in the Shihad camp gets unnecessarily drunk by the end of it!”Given that this festival is stacked with a line up to make any 90's kid froth, we asked Lindsay whether Frenzal Rhomb's set was likely to be more geared toward a nostalgic vibe.“Nah, fuck that!” He laughs, “We do a lot of new stuff. We love not relying on nostalgia. We use nostalgia, we'll pull it out, but we've just put a new album out and we've loved playing songs from the new album at the last couple of shows that we've done. So if you've come to see us play just songs from Not So Tough Now, bad luck!”The new album Lindsay speaks of is titled The Cup Of Pestilence. It was released only last month, and Lindsay says the songs are more involved and complex than ever.“We wrote really hard songs to play and to sing. They seem to be only getting more difficult, too. Frenzal Rhomb are like that petulant child you see at birthdays sticking all of the chocolates in his pocket and unwrapping all of the presents at somebody else's party.As in you don't know who the fuck invited them, but you are also glad they did!Since their formation in 1992 Frenzal Rhomb have been one of the finest punk exports to come out of this country, with a string of albums and songs that look at life and situations from every angle except straight on.They are notorious for their flippant sense of humour and ability to offend even themselves, with a musical outlook that is still as fresh and vibrant nearly three decades into their career with no sign of conforming just yet.Despite not releasing an album since 2017's awesome High Vis – High Tea, Frenzal Rhomb are front and centre on nearly every festival lineup that has happened between lockdowns this year and leading into 2022.They will perform at Spring Loaded, Full Tilt and Scene & Heard Festivals next year, and have also recently announced their own Gone To The Dogs tour that sees them playing from late December 2021 through to October next year.It's almost as if the band are going through a reverse midlife crisis where people are gravitating to their music more than ever, a point not lost on vocalist Jason Whalley."I know,” he nodded. “I know, right. Where were you 25 years ago? Actually, they were probably there, they were just younger. It's pretty wild how that music still resonates with people after all these years. It's pretty cool that people are still interested in it and want to pay us actual money to come and play in their town. It's good."When the conversation turns to the sheer volume of shows Frenzal Rhomb has committed to for the next ten months, Whalley's tone becomes more somber."We will build up some match fitness I'm sure, after we have a few goes at it,” he said, almost trying to convince himself. “Hopefully it will be second nature... I was talking to Gordy yesterday, our drummer, and I said gee, I don't think we're even going to have a chance to rehearse before this run of 40 shows or something and he said remember last time we played and I said yeah, and he's like yeah see, it's not hard (laughs). A dilemma is when the two choices in front of you are difficult. If you want to go spearfishing but you don’t have a dive buddy then your choices are; to dive alone or stay home. One choice involves a higher level of risk but also the possibility of fun, solitude and all the other wonders we experience when spearfishing. The other; less risk but a missed opportunity to spend the day out in the water. “Your spearfishing buddy is your only true piece of safety equipment when diving”. In spearfishing this inst just a figurative illustration though, it’s a reality especially chasing crayfish (lobster) or another hole dwelling tasty creature. And caves aren’t the only risk, not by a long shot. Let’s add shallow water blackout, boat/jetski traffic, cramp, current, sharks and all of the other less likely risks to the list. The fact is that having a buddy drastically reduces/mitigates every single one of these risks… BUT…. Let’s be honest. Some spearfishing buddies are so shit you might as well be diving by yourself anyway. AND… There are other appeals to diving alone despite the greatly increased risk of doing so. My latest guest is Frenzal Rhomb shredder, former Triple J radio broadcaster and self-confessed alcoholic vegan: Lindsay “The Doctor” McDougall!After famously “f***ing off” from his radio gig at the end of 2014, what makes this guy happy now? Playing music is still one of them, but the pressure of full time work is no longer a stress! We discuss much, including a few of the great people he spends time with that fill his life with joy. He’s passionate about good food and red wine (I mean, who isn’t? But do you marinate tofu??) There are some great anecdotes from the Frenzal days, too.We muse over how important it is to remember that everyone has different life experiences, everyone has different points of view, and basically at the end of the day it’s important to treat everyone with respect, regardless of whether or not you agree with their ideology. One example of this is a speech he once gave titled:“Really nice meat eaters VS arsehole vegetarians: understanding the former to avoid becoming the latter”.He does call me a “North Queensland prick”, but I’m not sure I’ll ever live up there again. I miss that place but “Inner-city prick” works fine for me just at the moment. If you’re offended by the word prick, don’t listen to the second half
