Last night saw six Australian acts join ARIA's Hall of Fame including 3-piece rockers Spiderbait. In this edition of The Conversation Hour Mary catches up with Janet English, the bands bassists and vocalist, to reflect on the band's legacy. Also in this edition, a new PFAS class action, plus the politics of The World Cup.
Interview by Ali WilliamsSpiderbait stands as one of Australia's most enduring alternative rock bands. Formed in 1989 in the small town of Finley, New South Wales, the trio comprises Janet English on bass and vocals, Whitt (Damian Whitty) on guitar, andKram (Mark Maher) on drums and vocals. The childhood friends began playing in a local tractor shed, forging a unique, high-energy sound that blended punk rock, thrash metal, and catchy pop sensibilities. Their tight-knit personal bond and minimal three-piece lineup became the foundation for a career spanning more than three decades. The band rose to national prominence through Australia's independent touring circuit and constant support from youth radio station Triple J. They achieved a historic milestone in 1996 when their frantic track Buy Me a Pony became the first Australian song to top the Triple J Hottest 100. This success catapulted their third studio album, Ivy & the Big Apples, into multi-platinum status. The album showcased their versatility, juxtaposing heavy guitar riffs with sweet, melodic vocals, exemplified by the chart-topping, acoustic-driven single Calypso.Spiderbait solidified their global and commercial legacy in 2004 with a blistering, hard-rock cover of the traditional folk song Black Betty. The track reached number one on the ARIA Singles Chart and gained massive international exposure through video games, television, and film soundtracks. Known for their explosive live performances, the band transitioned seamlessly from sweaty pub rock venues to headlining major festivals like the Big Day Out.Decades after their formation, Spiderbait remains highly relevant to the Australian music landscape. The group continues to tour to sold-out crowds, celebrating milestone anniversaries of their classic albums and introducing their raw, energetic catalog to new generations of fans. Their longevity, commercial triumphs, and fiercely independent spirit have earned them a permanent place among the legends of Australian rock music history.HEAVY'sAli Williams sat down for a nostalgic chat with Kram ahead of Spiderbait'sIvy & the Big Apples 30th anniversary tour.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

The story of Spiderbait is an unlikely but heart-warming one – three friends from a small Australian country town taking on the music scene, and emerging triumphantly thirty years later, friendship intact, and now one of the biggest and best rock bands on the national landscape. The trio's popularity spans three decades and shows no signs of abating. They've released seven acclaimed albums, all of which have racked up Gold, Platinum or Double Platinum status, and have combined Australian sales of over a million units. Spiderbait have also chalked up almost every Australian accolade possible, taking home multiple ARIA Awards, topping charts and becoming the first Australian band to take the crown in triple j's prestigious Hottest 100 of 1996 with Buy Me A Pony.Australian rock ‘n roll royalty, and with a catalogue of music that's distinctive and uncompromising, Spiderbait will be a part of The Croxton Block Party, a huge two-day festival celebrating 10 years of the venue, to be held in the carpark across from The Croxton Bandroom on November 1 and 2. The stacked line-up includes Tropical Fuck Storm, Cash Savage and the Last Drinks, Spiderbait, Ratcat, Floodlights, Party Dozen, Grace Cummings, and more.To celebrate the occasion, HEAVY sat down with Spiderbait's Kram to find out how more about the show."It's going to be great," he enthused "I think we've played at Croxton… I can't remember when we played it last. I know King Gizzard played there, and I remember getting up with Wolfmother as well. And yeah, it's just gonna be great for us to actually play there and be part of this great show. And there's a great line-up of acts over the two days."We ask if Spiderbait have any special plans to mark the occasion, to which Kram offered. "Well, we're just about to release the reissue of The Unfinished Spanish Galleon of Finley Lake, and we've pressed it on vinyl because I think it's the anniversary of that record's release. So we might try and do a fair few songs off that record for this show. It's gonna be sick. The Croxton Bandroom has been a great live music venue for the last 10 years, and it's such an iconic room. I'm happy that they're doing the show outdoors to make it like a block party, which obviously is what it's called. It's also celebrating that part of Melbourne, the North side. So many bands have come from there, including us."In the full interview, Kram further highlighted the significance of community support for live music venues and suggested that government incentives could help preserve these cultural spaces. He reflected on the transition of music from underground to mainstream, noting the enduring popularity of bands from his era and the challenges of replacing iconic venues. He announced the release of the 30th anniversary vinyl edition of The Unfinished Spanish Galleon of Finley Lake, highlighting its importance in marking Spiderbait's evolution and confirming that pre-sales will start on September 25 plus more.Tickets for The Croxton Block Party HEREBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Interview by Kris PetersGrinding Eyes craft a uniquely dark sonic landscape, fusing psychedelic shoegaze, drone rock, and ambient garage punk. The Sydney band released their third studio album, Out of Focus, last Friday, further capitalizing on the momentum built through their 2018 self-titled album and 2021's Taste the Monochrome.Known for their relentless touring, Grinding Eyes have shared stages with The Jesus and Mary Chain, Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats, Swervedriver, Graveyard, Moon Duo, Dinosaur Jr., Monkey Wrench, Superchunk, New Candys and Mudhoney, as well as Australian bands, Amyl and the Sniffers, Cosmic Psychos, Spiderbait, The Drones, Straight Arrows, DMA's, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, POND, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, and Tropical Fuck Storm. The band's line up also boasts members from past and present bands The Mess Hall, Treatment, The Laurels, Bliss and Kimono Drag Queens, further cementing their deep roots in Australia's underground music scene. But Grinding Eyes are more than just the sum of their past bands. They are a sonic extension into another realm of musical experimentation held back without boundaries or expectations.Vocalist Matt Wicks joined HEAVY to tell us more."With this album, I suppose we sort of concentrated a little bit more on the sounds where previously we've pretty much done everything live," he measured. "We would dive straight in, start recording, do a lot of long sessions and sort of see what comes out. On this one we tried to refine it a little bit more, do most of the songwriting and we actually played most of these songs live for a couple of months. So they became a life of their own. We wanted to really harness more of a tighter sound where we could mess with it more in the studio than just having the sort of raw organic rock and roll feel of it."In the full interview, HEAVY spoke with Matt about the release of Out Of Focus following a year of delays. Matt expressed his relief regarding the album's completion and highlighted the band's creative evolution, mentioning that they have already started writing new material. The album features a mix of musical styles, reflecting their organic songwriting process.During their forthcoming Australian tour, the band intends to perform a substantial portion of the new album alongside some older tracks. Furthermore, they will support Pig's Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs on their European tour later this year.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Interview by Kris PetersAustralian music was a melting pot of talent in the early 90s with bands like Tumbleweed, Regurgitator, Spiderbait, Magic Dirt and the Superjesus planting the initial seeds that would see them still knocking crowds dead to this day - some 30 years later.Punk upstarts the Hard-Ons were also a major player in the thriving scene, but it is an offshoot of that band - formed after internal bickering led to one of the band's many breakups - called Nunchukka Superfly who made perhaps the biggest impact of them all despite never releasing an album and disbanding after a few short years. In that time Nunchukka Superfly - Ray Ahn and Peter Black from Hard-Ons, Massappeal drummer Peter Allen and former Harpoon frontman and future Drones co-founder (and now JJ McCann Transmission main man) James McCann - earnt a fierce reputation as a must see live band, managing to record an albums worth of material that was seemingly lost to the ether and never to be seen or heard again.Until now.The masters of that album found their way back into the hands of McCann, who dutifully passed them along to the rest of the band, ensuring the collection of now timeless punk rock tunes would finally see the light of day.The band released Nunchukka Superfly 95 earlier this year and announced a run of shows in celebration, proving there's still life in the legs and lungs of this Australian musical enigma. And where there's life, there's hope, as evidenced by the fact Blackie and James reached out to us here at HEAVY to talk about the past, present and future of Nunchukka Superfly. We start with the album and ask how it felt to finally release it after so many years."I guess you could call it strange," Blackie mused, "but at the same time it felt really good, and I think we can thank James for that because I didn't even have a copy of the recordings. I forgot what it was like even. But James got in touch about a year and a half ago and said mate, have you heard that fucken thing we did all those many moons ago? It's really ferocious. We should release it and I remember thinking yeah, yeah, maybe one day. He sent me a copy, and I was like holy fuck he's right. This is mad.""I had it on cassette for years," James added. "And I think we all had a cassette copy initially, but I wore that out eventually. In Sydney Jason, who recorded it, was working across the road from where I lived at the Hopeton Hotel on the weekends, and he said I have that DAT tape of that Nunchukka Superfly recording, do you want a copy? I said yes, and I sat on that for years because I didn't have a DAT player (laughs). I had access to this old 90s DAT player about ten years ago at a friend's studio, so we plugged in the old player and put the cassette in and BAM, there it was loud and clear, and somehow I had stored it away well enough to obviously have not lost it. That was the start, then I got it digitized and sent it to Blackie and Ray."In the full interview, Blackie and James talk more about the release of their debut album, Nunchucka Superfly 95, after many years, and the upcoming reunion shows. They shared their memories of the band's formation, their last show in 1996, and their chemistry during the first jam session, expressing excitement about the reunion and the potential for future collaborations.Blackie and James also discussed the process of obtaining and digitizing the original recording of their debut album, emphasizing that no alterations were made to the original recording. They reflected on the quality of the music and the positive reactions on social media and strong initial sales, including overseas interest, and expressed pride and gratitude for the continued interest in their music after so many years.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

It's not overstating it to say that Spiderbait are one of Australia's most loved bands. For more than 30 years, this power trio have ripped it up on stages and albums alike, and held a tight bond of friendship the whole way through. Their latest venture is a compilation album celebrating their bassist and singer Janet English. It's called Sounds in the Key Of J, and off the back of it's release I asked the main character and her bandmate Kram to Take 5. This is one of the wildest collections of songs I've ever seen in a Take 5, and I'm here for it. It's also a beautiful reflection of friendship, curiosity, the genre bending they've done, and the foundations of where Spiderbait have come from. From The Go-Go's to the War of the Worlds album, jump in and take a trip through the foundations of Spiderbait with Janet and Kram. The Go Go's - We Got The Beat Marie Greene & Betty Wand - Dites-Moi (South Pacific Soundtrack) Jeff Wayne, Justin Hayward & Richard Burton - The Eve Of The War Talking Heads - Crosseyed And Painless The Primitives - Spacehead

I wonder: do you listen to mostly music by male artists or by female artists? We were inspired by the great Australian band Spiderbait and their recent compilation 'Sounds in the Key Of J' that celebrates all the best songs sung by their female vocalist Janet as opposed to the songs sung by their male vocalist Kram. In a band that has two lead singers, Kram, male, drums and singer AND Janet, female, bass player and singer, you get an incredible balance of both sounds. This compilation was conceived as a celebration and was driven by Kram who says: “Janet's talent is so undeniable, it's easy to forget that she was a bit of a trailblazer in the blokey 90s scene. "In the '90s, women songwriters were few and far between, and thankfully it's not that way anymore." Which brings us to this chat about female artists. We wanted to tackle the topic head on, chat about our favourite female artists, about some inconsistencies in the music industry, the imbalance toward male skewed artists, some startling statistics and our thoughts about unconscious bias and what we can do to address the situation. Of course we took on a challenge to share a favourite female artist album and get each others opinions upon our first listen. Spiderbait are no strangers to triple j and Double J. They're part of the fabric of Australian festival culture, they're Hottest 100 champions, and drummer Kram has recently popped up again on stage in our annual One Night Stand gig in Lucindale. In 2012, when Kram did the Take 5, Spiderbait were gearing up to play a greatest hits set at Splendour in the Grass. He took us on a trip down memory lane, through some of the band's most amazing moments.
