In this episode of the Beyond Jaws podcast, Dr. Alexandra McInturf shares her journey in shark science and conservation, highlighting her impressive academic and research background. Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, a landlocked state, Alexandra developed a passion for marine biology and sharks at a young age, inspired by a family trip to Florida and the influence of Shark Week. She graduated cum laude from Williams College with degrees in biology and English, later earning her PhD in animal behavior from the University of California, Davis. Her doctoral research focused on basking sharks and involved significant citizen science efforts. Despite challenges, including not seeing basking sharks during her fieldwork in Ireland, she pivoted her research to utilize existing data and collaborated with other researchers, including Dr. David Ebert. Currently, Alexandra is a research associate at Oregon State University's Big Fish Lab, where she examines the foraging ecology of salmon sharks and investigates the impacts of microplastics on marine life. She is also involved in community engagement and outreach, aiming to raise awareness about sharks in Oregon, a state often overlooked in shark research. One of her notable recent projects involved studying a ship strike incident involving a basking shark, which underscored the importance of understanding human impacts on marine species. Alexandra emphasizes the significance of mentorship and science communication in her work, striving to make shark science more inclusive and accessible to the public. Through her efforts, she aims to contribute to the conservation of threatened marine species and foster a greater understanding of their ecological roles. This week we talk with Dr. Haley Dolton about how she studied the physiology of basking sharks in Ireland! This is no small feat. We read Dr. Dolton's article, "Regional endothermic traits in planktivorous basking sharks Cetohinus maximus" Article Summary: The majority of sharks are classified as cold-blooded or ectotherms. Sharks are constantly battling heat loss to the surrounding water. To combat this, some fast-swimming apex species are classified as regional endotherms, having uncommon physiological traits such as elevated internal body temperatures, centralized red muscle, and thick-walled hearts. Within the order Lamniformes, housing the only regionally endothermic sharks, you can find the basking shark which is a large, filter-feeding planktivorous species. Previous research has led to the conclusion that basking sharks are ectothermic. To investigate this, Dolton et al. collected muscle samples and measured the internal temperature of basking sharks finding that they displayed the traits previously stated. Their research leads to the finding that basking sharks may not be correctly classified as an ectotherm, which is a surprising find! Yes they do! Rachel & Shane talk about the common question that we are asked. Do basking sharks breach? They are the biggest shark/fish in the world to do so and there has been a couple of recent studies that have measured speed and other parameters. The researchers found that the speed basking sharks attain when they breach is similar to that of white sharks. It is suggested that they breach for communication or courtship. Removal of parasites has also been suggested but perhaps more likely to be an ancillary benefit to the behavoir. Have you heard of the Carradale incident? Britain's only recorded death by (basking) shark attack. Listen to find out more!

Basking sharks on the West Coast USA?!?! Dr. Alex McInturf returns from season 1 and gives us a MASSIVE update about her career, basking shark populations, and the tea on basking shark conservation. Did you know basking sharks were along the West Coast USA?! Most don't, because these sightings are now extremely rare. This week we breakdown Dr. McInturf's article, "“Spatial Distribution, Temporal Changes, and Knowledge Gaps in Basking Shark (Cetorhinus maximus) Sightings in the California Current Ecosystem” McInturf et al. 2022 Article Summary: Basking sharks are the world's second largest fish, and one of the three filter-feeding shark species. Basking sharks are very slow growing, long-lived animals that have a 20-30 year generation time (meaning, there is 20-30 years between two consecutive generations). This species is found around the world and is capable of large-scale migrations. Basking sharks will aggregate during certain months, known as basking shark “hot spots”. Hotspots were observed Eastern North Pacific coastline and California Current Ecosystem, but are now rarely observed. McInturf et al. (2022) compiled recent and historical datasets to examine temporal patterns of basking shark sightings in the California Current Ecosystem, and determine the spatial, temporal, and environmental drivers that have affected basking shark presence and distribution for the last 50 years. Their research showed that there were nearly 4,000 sharks sighted per year until the 1990s, after which sightings are extremely rare. There was also a 50% decline in basking shark school size. In this episode we chat with the archaeological (Clare Henderson) and wildlife (Craig Nisbet) rangers of St Kilda, the island group which sits 100 miles away from mainland Scotland. This rugged and isolated location has both an amazing human history along with extraordinary wildlife. It's home to a million sea birds, the highest sea cliffs & sea stacks in the UK along with being a duel UNESCO world heritage site. The island archipelago sits right out in the North Atlantic so has a well respected reputation for fearsome weather, but it's location also means it's a magnet for a whole range of wildlife above and below the waves. Clare & Craig give us a glimpse into their lives on the island as they spend a summer season based out there. Tales of snedge the snowy owl, living in the luxury of the manse, commuting to work by helicopter, wild swimming, seabird surveys, weather, human history, penguins and of course the basking sharks, and specially the baby shark that was seen this summer past! It's a dream location to visit and one which is a difficult one to undertake with all the conditions required to come together. We are hoping to visit in May during a week based on Barra. Fancy joining us for a wild adventure! Check out our trip here. For more information on the islands check out the NTS website here (National Trust for Scotland).

If you're a fan of nature (of course you are) & you're on social media (very likely too) then you will know that within the conservation industry there often debates or dare I say battles between people or organisations with opposing views. For example the shooting industry & the RSPB. This got me thinking, how does this affect the progress & overall end result of projects or debates. To help teach me more about this I spoke with conservation scientist & ambassador for Save Our Seas Foundation, Isla Hodgson. Before we spoke about conservation conflicts I HAD to talk to Isla about another passion in her life, Basking Sharks. Isla has spent many hours in the presence of these wonderful animals & her love for them came across perfectly. In this poetically beautiful short film by Irish nature filmmaker and illustrator, Vincent Hyland, the plight of the Atlantic Salmon in Ireland is dramatically depicted from the Salmon's point of view. Recently, a ban on drift net fishing of these magnificent fish was enacted in Ireland. The drift net ban originated by pressure from the European Union which is taking the Irish Government to Court over non-implementation of laws to protect wildlife and habitats based on scientific research showing a near fatal collapse in Salmon stocks and a very persuasive game angling lobby - who are powerful, well-financed and organized. Their argument is that catchment management, conservation, bag limiting and catch and release are the best way to manage Salmon stocks. They also point out that a Salmon caught on rod and line bring far more revenue into the local community than those caught commercially. Even though the Government created a hardship fund (known as a net buyout fund) so that Salmon drift net fishermen would cease fishing and hand over their nets, to date no Salmon fishermen have received compensation due to the Government dragging the issue out. A number of Salmon Anglers in the Southwest of Ireland have threatened to defy the ban by putting nets back into the water. Recently a Basking Shark was washed ashore this month entangled in a drift net - the fishermen deny that the net is a drift net. So tensions remain high between Government and fishermen. And what is at stake is the very future of the Atlantic Salmon of Ireland. For more information on the wonderful work of Vincent Hyland, please visit his website at www.VincentHyland.com.
