From Heart of Texas to Heart of a Mission – Resilience, Family, and a Legacy of Giving Welcome to this week's Team Never Quit episode! Today, we Marcus and Melanie have an incredibly inspiring guest, Kristi Schiller, joining them. Kristi is a Texas philanthropist, entrepreneur, animal lover, and stroke survivor with an unwavering dedication to making the world a safer, kinder, and more compassionate place. Kristi shares her story of resilience, community impact, and love. Kristi's career started in broadcast journalism, with highlights that include being dubbed the “Queen of the Internet” by Forbes in 1997. But it's her charitable work, particularly as the founder of K9s4COPs that has been a true calling. This nonprofit organization provides highly trained K9 officers to law enforcement agencies across the U.S., supporting public safety in a unique way. Kristi's love for animals is evident in her life at Schiller Ranch, where her passion for horses also led her to create the Diamonds & Dirt Barrel Horse Classic, an event that celebrates barrel racing and benefits her nonprofit. In this episode, Kristi opens up about a life-altering experience in 2021. During a routine shopping trip, she suddenly became disoriented, forgetting her name and address—a frightening moment that eventually led to the diagnosis of multiple strokes. She discusses the unexpected struggles and humbling moments of recovery, from speech therapy to relearning simple phrases. Yet, through her journey, Kristi has remained resilient, now using her platform to advocate for stroke awareness, sharing critical insights on recognizing symptoms and prioritizing health. Kristi's message is clear: stay vigilant, cherish your support system, and never underestimate the power of resilience. Don't miss this moving, inspiring conversation with Kristi Schiller! In This Episode You Will Hear: • I saw all these people in front of the banks of TVs and they were crying. I asked “What's going on?” They said a gunman came into a school in Connecticut and shot children, Kindergarteners. (13:12) • [In an airport] So how he approaches that person [who looks like a potential threat] – that sets off the tone for the rest of [the encounter]. (15:01) • [Marcus] The coolest line up would be when those guys [retiring military] are getting out and you have a school where every bus driver is SF (Special Forces). (17:16) • For the most part, they [retired military] want to keep serving. They want to do something. (17:48) • I was like “Even if we just satisfied [the needs] in our area.” Within 3 or 4 months we were in Iowa, and now we're in 40 states, Europe and Africa. We have removed 8 Billion dollars in contraband, made over 200,000 felony arrests, and recovered 150,000 weapons. (26:28) • Everybody thinks that child abuse/molestation, they're gonna grab your kid and take ‘em. That would be a worst case scenario. But a lot of times, you're out and about, shopping, you're maybe at a fair or event. It's somebody just coming by touching, just to cop a feel. (42:38) • [The Amish] have no vaccines, they're not even wearing shoes. They have no TV and no media, and they're thriving. (48:13) • I was really sick during COVID. I didn't realize I'd had 6 strokes. (53:53) • A dog, when it comes in - people will think twice about messing with our nurses, or even doctors. (58:57) • Our government didn't get our hostages out of Iran. It was Oscar Wyatt and John Connally. How did we repay ‘em? We sent ‘em to prison. (63:28) • [Marcus] I tell you what, I wish I was half the man my dogs thought I was. (76:28) • [Marcus - My dog] taught me more about myself than I could've ever learned from a lot of grown men. (76:38) • Have you been to the capitol? They have a separate line. You have a gun on you? Oh, get to go to the front of the line. (83:50) • When you turn on the news and you see that your dog's gone in. A guy drove to Galveston and drove into Galveston Bay. They threw the dog in and he got him out of Galveston Bay. As we wrap up season 7, I was honoured to sit down for a conversation with the artist Kim McElroy. As you'll hear in this episode, I met Kim in 2007 through a series of synchronistic events, and was struck by her presence even then. I then had the opportunity to be inspired by her art as I regularly pulled cards from the Way of the Horse, her collaborative deck with Linda Kohanov.  In this episode, timed for the release of her newest collaboration with one of my mentors Sandra Wallin, the Council of Horses Oracle deck, you'll learn about the almost 20 year journey from first inspiration for this deck to this moment, how Kim and Sandra chose which mythical and modern-day horses to include, what it meant to create a lasting legacy for many of the horses and herds included in this deck, and how art can be the deepest expression of essence, energy and emotion. Kim also unveils one of her original works of arts included in the deck, the Mythic Horse, which I've shared on my main podcast page.  This chat was a walk through the past as it caught up with our present, and it was a chance for reflection on what a journey it has been for both of us! Definitely one of my favourite conversations to date, and as you can hear, I love the perks of this job, like being gifted a gorgeous horse oracle deck created by two women I hold very dear. I love the way this deck doesn't tip toe around the tough stuff - and the way Kim continues to be a fierce advocate for the horse.  Kim McElroy has been drawn to horses since childhood, and as soon as she could hold a crayon, this manifested as her art. For more than thirty years, she has been known for her intuitive understanding of the sentient nature of horses and her ability to infuse her art with their spiritual energy. She distills this energy into expressions of the horses' quintessential essence in ways that transcend how they are traditionally defined. Through her incredible mastery of pastels, and her talent in writing about her visionary insights, she conveys the power and beauty of the horse's form—yet more than that, she offers us a timeless glimpse of its soul. Kim is the co-author and illustrator of The Council of Horses, illustrator and co-creator of Way of the Horse: Equine Archetypes for Self-Discovery deck and guidebook by Linda Kohanov, the author and illustrator of the Way of the Horse Journal, and From Heart to Art: A Chronicle of the Experiences, Philosophies, and Inspirations behind the Artwork of Kim McElroy In 2000, Kim and her husband, Rod, created SkyeLandeSea sanctuary in Washington State, where they provided loving forever homes to rescued horses and a menagerie of other animals. Now that their beloved horses have joined the Council, their sanctuary is home to a resident herd of wild but well-fed deer, and two capricious housecats. Kim offers studio tours by appointment. Is it possible to prevent death if we had acted differently? How do we want to be remembered in our final days? These questions linger, challenging us to confront our own mortality and that of our loved ones with courage and compassion. So, Yvonne wondered, why do we avoid talking about the end of life until it's too late? It was during her time working in a retirement community that Yvonne discovered the Five Wishes®, sparking a courageous conversation with her father about his end-of-life wishes—a conversation that ultimately shaped the course of their journey together. From Heart-to-Heart: Yvonne's first book, "Flying with Dad," delves into her father's experiences in World War II, but it's the conversations about end-of-life wishes that resonate deeply with readers. In "Dying with Dad," she shares the joy of her father's passing on his own terms—a triumph born from heartfelt discussions and unwavering love."Dying with Dad" serves as a beacon of hope, inspiring us to embrace meaningful discussions about aging, death, and grief. Through Yvonne's guidance, we learn that these conversations aren't just about facing our mortality; they're about embracing life's final chapters with grace and dignity. As our conversation draws to a close, the echoes of Yvonne's wisdom linger, reminding us of the importance of embracing life in all its beauty and complexity. From Heart at War  To Peace: Transforming My Relationship With My FamilyToday, I will share my journey from conflict to peace. It started in the desert. When I think back to my time in the New Mexico Desert in 2019, I realize something important. I loved my children, but I didn't see them as individuals. Instead, I saw them as extensions of myself. In my journal, I realized that I had been trying to control and shape my children's lives to fit my idea of perfection. This realization hit me hard. How has this affected my children? How have I overshadowed their dreams and desires? These questions bothered me deeply. But facing this discomfort head-on allowed me to grow and heal. It gave me the space to confront these truths honestly and openly. On this episode, we'll talk about:As a father and a busy executive who felt overwhelmed. I decided to go on a five-day retreat to a monastery for a break.Alex returned home from an equine therapy ranch and completed high school online. But he again, started exhibiting aggressive and threatening behavior. The family set rules, but he didn't follow them and left the house. Sawyer gained weight and Kaylee had chronic thumb pain. Our lives were demanding and filled with conflict.I spent time at a remote monastery in the US, engaging in various activities and finding silence. On the fourth day, I was reading a woman's story that she viewed her children as objects, causing me to question my perspective.A moment of self-realization, leading to intense emotions. Seeking forgiveness and deciding to make a change.Changing our perspective is crucial for relationships, as seeing others as objects hinders connection. We must see loved ones as human beings with dreams, desires, and fears equal to our own to have fulfilling relationships. The collusion diagram in Dr. Warner's book, "Bonds That Makes Us Free” and the Arbinger Institute's influence pyramind is a great tool for me.The importance of understanding and love in their relationship, rather than always trying to fix the teenager. The Anatomy of Peace as a tool to transform conflict into peace, is particularly useful for parents. The relational, leadership, or change pyramid is introduced, with understanding and love at the top and correction as the base.A personal story about my child with reactive attachment disorder and our perspective on parenting. My reflections on prioritizing our image to others over our child's well-being. The question posed is how to see children as human beings rather than objects. The importance of following our instincts to do the right thing in our interactions with others. Ignoring these instincts leads to self-justification and dehumanizing others. The views and opinions expressed on the “Life In Transition” podcast are solely those of the author and guests and should not be attributed to any other individual or entity. Tom has over 35 years of hospital leadership and is passionate about compassionate care and servant leadership. In our world right now we all need to take the time to see the perspectives of others and not judge. Compassion for others seems to be missing in so many areas right now in our society but one place it needs to be strongest is in healthcare. Tom shares why it's so important to engage the heart and why It's so important to engage the mind. It can't be either or it has to be both and we need to embody compassion, care, and love. It's not a weakness, to love, and it's not a weakness to be compassionate, it's not a weakness to be vulnerable and to open our hearts up. Because how many of us have been told, you know, man up or something like that when we're younger? Tom Dahlborg is all about helping others. He's gifted at taking what he's learned, capturing the lessons and then sharing them with others. In this week's podcast, Tom talks about his two books that captured some important take-aways during two really tough times in his life. In his first book, he talks about the experience of watching his son being bullied (mostly by adults) to the point where he tried to take his own life. In the Big Kid in Basketball…and The Lessons He Taught His Father and Coach, he talks about what parents and coaches should know about bullying, kids in trouble and how these adverse childhood experiences affect us as adults. In his second book, From Heart to Head & Back Again … a journey through the healthcare system, he takes us through his experiences as both a patient who was told he would never work again and get in line for a heart transplant ... and as a health leader with a mission to fix the brokenness of healthcare system. With more than 35 years in healthcare leadership, Tom brings a very unique perspective and is able to share stories and reflections that not only inspire us, but they show us what real caring looks like in action. His real gift is connecting the head to the heart. Tom says that by bringing “love in action” in all we do, we not only deliver better patient care, but it also keeps our flames of goodness burning bright as healthcare workers and leaders. In May, Tom will be presenting at The Gratitude Symposium, a free month-long series of online presentations from 43 well-known experts meant to thank, teach, and inspire those in healthcare.  His session is entitled “Gratitude in Action…a Foundation for HealthCARING.” All you have to do is register to view the material, and you can watch the videos on your schedule. It’s probably fair to say that most health leaders are genuinely concerned about making healthcare better. However, not all decisions coming from above translate well into practice from the patients’ perspective. Tom Dahlborg never realized this until he found himself on the other end of the stethoscope. When he became a patient, he saw how some of the decisions he once taught made things better didn’t make things better at all and sometimes even led to outright harm. Since then, he has become a huge advocate for patients’ welfare. In his second book, “From Heart to Head & Back Again,” he takes a walk along the memory corridors, back to the time when he was in the patient’s robe and shares how that experience impacted his view on what should be done to make the system become a better one for the patients. The task that Tom takes upon as his own is nothing short of herculean, but he believes it can be done if we go back to the core values of healthcare – which is the intrinsic motivation to care, love and be kind to one another. Listen in as he shares this powerful message with Patrick Veroneau. Love the show? Subscribe, rate, review, and share!
