The SPaMCAST is on summer holiday for the next two weeks (SPaMCAST 666 and SPaMCAST 667. Today we are featuring an interview released on December 27, 2015, with Gerald (Jerry) M. Weinberg. Gerald Weinberg is the author of more than 100 books, including the best-selling Secrets of Consulting, other non-fiction series, and the ever-popular Women of Power novels. He is a principal in the international consulting firm of Weinberg and Weinberg. The festschrift, The Gift of Time (Fiona Charles, ed.) honors his work for his 75th birthday. A website for Jerry's fans may be found at http://www.geraldmweinberg.com . A talk with Jerry was always profound, and I must admit that Jerry's humor caused me to laugh more times than I can count during our conversation. Mr. Weinberg died on August 7, 2018, I wish I had interviewed him more times for the podcast. Re-Read Saturday News The poll for the next book in the series has begun! Note there are two books in the list I have not read. I am planning to read them and have been highly recommended. Therefore I would be happy to read them with you rather than re-read them with you. Are you a serial multitasker? If so, you might be getting LESS done and losing MORE time. In today's episode, we dive into the science of context switching and how you can avoid it in your day. View the full shownotes and links to resources at artsintegration.com/sparkchasers What is Context Switching? So in computing, a context switch is when an operating system stores where you’re at so you can go back later. It essentially allows you to multitask. Now, multitasking can be great at certain times - like when your computer is trying to do multiple things for you at once. But it’s terrible for us as humans. Multitasking never allows you to fully focus on one thing. Your attention is pulled in so many different directions that you’re not able to do any one of them well. So here’s where this becomes important to us. Context switching in humans is when we’re jumping back and forth between tasks all day, every day. And according to research, it actually eats up almost 80% of your time. Here’s what that might look like: Working on 3-4 different projects on the same day Moving between tasks and never finishing any of them Writing an email, then working on curriculum, then grading a student assignment How Context Switching Holds You Back Now context switching might sound like a normal day for you. I know it did for me. But here’s where the research gets really interesting. When we context switch during our day, we lose momentum and focus. So everytime we start a new task, it takes our brains time to let go of what we were working on and switch over. That causes us to lose time. Which is why when we’re working on so many things during a day, it can sometimes feel like we haven’t accomplished anything at all. In fact, according to psychologist Gerald Weinberg, context switching can cost us anywhere from 40-80% of productivity time. Here’s how this breaks down in real life: Focusing on one task at a time = 100% of your productive time available Juggling two tasks at a time = 40% of your productive time for each and 20% lost to context switching Juggling three tasks at a time = 20% of your productive time for each and 40% lost to context switching How to Realign Your Work So what do you do instead? Todd Herman suggests something called the Block and Tackle method. Dan Tricarico talks about this on his blog, The Zen Teacher as well. In the Block and Tackle method, you’re going to block off sections of your day to work on a single task. Nothing else is able to happen during that time block - you’re just going to tackle that one task. You’ll work on it with total focus during that time and when the time is up, you’re able to move to the next block.

What has your business done for you lately? Is your business running you rather than you running your business? On today’s Profit By Design, Dr. Sabrina Starling hosts a special Ask Dr. Sabrina segment to answer an important question asked by a listener. You’re going to absolutely love this episode because Dr. Sabrina takes time to really dive deeply into answering the all-important question relevant and important to each of you: How do you actually start freeing up your time in your business to work toward that 4 Week Vacation? Show Highlights Dr. Sabrina discusses interrupting your patterns of behavior so that you can make well-thought-out decisions, rather than making decisions while in a fight or flight mode. It may feel awkward to put your phone down and step away from your business for even an hour, so expect it. Dr. Sabrina suggests it’s easy to just get into “busy mode” and solve problems rather than creating a system to take care of the problem if it should occur again. Remember why you began your business and the lifestyle you wanted to create? Dr. Sabrina says there are questions you need to ask yourself as to why you are not yet reaching your goals, and many are included on Dr. Sabrina’s webinar. What is Context Switching? Context switching deals with how unproductive it is to have multiple projects going simultaneously. Dr. Sabrina describes the process developed by Gerald Weinberg in the early 1990’s, and recently, Todd Herman created a fantastic YouTube video related to it. If you are working on 3 projects simultaneously, you will experience a 40% loss due to project switching. Context switching can help you realize that your projects are competing and that you really need to focus on the most important project in order to get you the most forward momentum. Dr. Sabrina discusses the $10,000.00 an Hour Webinar and how you take steps to work toward it. What areas of your business can you automate in order to free up your time? Dr. Sabrina suggests taking a long look at this and to put systems in place to automate what you can. Das erwähnte Buch von Donald Gause und Gerald Weinberg heißt "Are your lights on?"
Welcome to Episode 9 of Season 1 – 3 Principles For Success (Including Your Content Creation Schedule) Season 1 of the podcast is all about how you can start your first profitable online business. This season draws its shows from the free downloadable resource ‘The 13 Steps to Creating Your First Profitable Online Business.' In todays show we cover step 8 of the 13 steps to creating your first profitable online business: Your Content Creation Schedule: The 2 foundational pillars of business is to: Add value to your customers ahead of time To get them to know, like and trust you This is why having a content creation schedule is so important. Success Principal # 1: Consistency Consistency leads to success. When you produce consistent content you are training people to come back regularly. However, when your content creation is irregular, you are teaching people not to bother! Most people give up too soon because they are not seeing immediate results. "Success is inevitable if you are consistent." Clive Smit What medium are you going to create in? Written Audio Video A mix of all 3 I recommend making content in the form that you like to consume in. The great thing about making this content is that you can use it as the source or your social media content. And this brings us to the best part... Success Principal # 2: Delegation Get your VA (virtual assistant) to use the transcript of your content to post to your social media accounts. "Can I really do this?" I hear you ask. Not only can you, but you MUST! The two most important questions you need to ask about your business: What can only I do? Who else can do the rest? "But I can't afford..." "Scared money don't make money." Our next success principal will explain why delegation is an absolute must. Success Principal # 3: Focus Most people wear the ability to multitask as a badge of honour. But this simply means that you are NOT focused! Gerald Weinberg found that context switching is a productivity killer. Context switching is the time and energy that it takes to get re-associated and reacquainted to the other project you just moved away from and that you are now coming back to. So stop multitasking and focus! F. O. C. U. S. = follow one course until success. We can do this by batching our work. Take a day each month, fortnight or day to create your content. Calendar this is to your schedule now. Create as much as you can on this day so you can get ahead and have margin for times when emergencies or opportunities pop up on your calendar. What other regular tasks can you batch? Overview: Sean K. Murphy has an accomplished career in a variety of industries, including software engineering, project management and business development. In this episode we talk about leadership, resilience and reliability from an entrepreneurial standpoint. I am firmly convinced that all leaders need to understand something about entrepreneurism and how entrepreneurial skills may help leaders to develop more resilient organizations. Sean has some outstanding advice for leaders, regardless of their industry. Sean’s Biography: Sean Murphy has worked in a variety of roles in the last twenty-five years: software engineer, engineering manager, project manager, business development, product marketing, and customer support. Companies he has worked directly for include Cisco Systems, 3Com, AMD, MMC Networks, and VLSI Technology. He has a BS in Mathematical Sciences and an MS in Engineering-Economic Systems from Stanford. Show Notes: Changes make things obsolete so organizations need room to experiment in environments that are safe to fail in. A degree if failure has to be tolerated if organizations want to seek improvement and build resiliency. Organizations need to plan for iteration. Organizations should consider a stream of small failures and include resilience and recovery plans for overlapping repair. Startup organizations should have 2-3 backup plans ready. Leaders need to review and critique their own performance in order to improve. They also need to be willing to say, “I don’t know.” Sign up for our Newsletter here, or go to: www.v-speedsafety.com/email-subscription Time-Stamped Show Notes 0:35-Randy introduces Sean Murphy and describes who he is, including reading his biography. 3:30- Randy asks Sean, “Okay, we’ve heard your formal bio, but tell us what makes you tick, what motivates you, what inspires you, or generally why you do what you do?” 8:02-Randy and Sean discuss the concept of going all in with one course of action and having no backup options, and the potential dangers of not having backup plans. 18:00-Randy asks Sean about some of the reasons for business failure, such as giving up too early or scaling too quickly and Sean provides his perspective. 25:29-Randy asks Sean about an “Aha moment” that shaped his outlook on business and leadership. Sean describes the book The Inner Game of Tennis by Timothy Gallwey. 32:15-Randy describes Crew Resource Management training and the benefits. 33:40-Randy asks Sean, “What area(s) in leadership or organization development do you think needs disruption and why?” Resources: Article about avoiding backup plans: http://www.inc.com/deborah-petersen/elizabeth-holmes-avoid-backup-plans.html Book Recommendations: Secrets of Consulting by Gerald Weinberg, The E-Myth by Michael Gerber, and Effectual Entrepreneurship by Sara Sarasvathy Contact: Web: www.skmurphy.com (includes blog and contact info)
