When high school English teacher Dan Tricarico started taking photos of his colleagues, he didn't expect them to create new bonds among his staff. Teachers rarely get an opportunity to have their humanity and uniqueness showcased in this way, but these beautiful portraits do just that — and anyone with a smartphone can do the same thing for the teachers at their school. Teachers are (still!) not okay, and that's coming straight from the mouth of a teacher. The pandemic continues, and teachers continue to struggle with making the impact they went into the profession to make. The result is a lot of burnout and frustration, a lot of complaining (from teachers, students, administrators, parents), and a mass exodus of teachers leaving the profession. This week's guest is not one of those teachers. In fact, he's a teacher on a mission to help others get back to themselves and the impact they want to make. This is Dan Tricarico's second appearance on the podcast and it won't be his last. As a school administrator, it was helpful to hear Dan's perspective on what he's seeing and hearing from other teachers. And he shares what teachers, leaders, and parents can do to help support the wellbeing of their educators. It's an enlightening conversation that will leave you with a different perspective of what teaching and learning look like right now. About Dan Tricarico: After 30 years as a high school English teacher, Dan Tricarico found himself heading toward burnout and knew something had to change. Wanting to continue as a teacher, he cultivated strategies that helped him reclaim his control and stay in the classroom. Today, Tricarico is a national speaker who shares his expertise and insight to show teachers how to reduce their stress and improve their self-care, so they can thrive both inside and outside the classroom. THREE QUESTIONS WITH ROBYN HATCHER. . . Robyn Hatcher is a communication expert, professional speaker, coach, consultant, Neuro-Linguistic Programming Practitioner and “recovering” actor. Catch my conversation with Lindsay Titus, Dan Tricarico, and Dori Katsionis as we dig into all this and more. DAN TRICARICO recommends the 5 Ss: Stillness, Silence, Space, Subtraction, and Slowing Down. These are always free and always available! LINDSAY TITUS talks about the mindset of self-care: it's about defining what it looks like for YOU, your needs, and your identity. Lindsay points to the 4 As: Awareness (of self, environment), Acceptance (of where I'm at), Acknowledgment, and Action (move toward alignment). DORI KATSIONIS points toward the 3 Ms: Movement, Mindset, and Meditation. Getting outside is huge. Every YES requires a NO. What are some things that pandemic educators can be saying no to right now? As academic trailblazers, we take the current educational system on our shoulders and attempt to create lasting change for today’s young learners. Do you want to know a genuinely radical and revolutionary act that will deepen your impact and allow you to succeed beyond your current potential? Self-care. Today we are joined by educator, author, and Zen teacher Dan Tricarico, who reminds us that self-care is a necessity, not a luxury. Dan reminds us of the importance of creating an attitude of gratitude, trusting the moment, and combating burnout. Listen in as we talk about using Zen teaching to break through educational bureaucracy. If we can’t change the system, we have to change how we operate within the system and ourselves. About Dan Tricarico: After 30 years as a high school English teacher, Dan Tricarico found himself heading toward burnout and knew something had to change. Wanting to continue as a teacher, he cultivated strategies that helped him reclaim his control and stay in the classroom. Are you a serial multitasker? If so, you might be getting LESS done and losing MORE time. In today's episode, we dive into the science of context switching and how you can avoid it in your day. View the full shownotes and links to resources at artsintegration.com/sparkchasers What is Context Switching? So in computing, a context switch is when an operating system stores where you’re at so you can go back later. It essentially allows you to multitask. Now, multitasking can be great at certain times - like when your computer is trying to do multiple things for you at once. But it’s terrible for us as humans. Multitasking never allows you to fully focus on one thing. Your attention is pulled in so many different directions that you’re not able to do any one of them well. So here’s where this becomes important to us. Context switching in humans is when we’re jumping back and forth between tasks all day, every day. And according to research, it actually eats up almost 80% of your time. Here’s what that might look like: Working on 3-4 different projects on the same day Moving between tasks and never finishing any of them Writing an email, then working on curriculum, then grading a student assignment How Context Switching Holds You Back Now context switching might sound like a normal day for you. I know it did for me. But here’s where the research gets really interesting. When we context switch during our day, we lose momentum and focus. So everytime we start a new task, it takes our brains time to let go of what we were working on and switch over. That causes us to lose time. Which is why when we’re working on so many things during a day, it can sometimes feel like we haven’t accomplished anything at all. In fact, according to psychologist Gerald Weinberg, context switching can cost us anywhere from 40-80% of productivity time. Here’s how this breaks down in real life: Focusing on one task at a time = 100% of your productive time available Juggling two tasks at a time = 40% of your productive time for each and 20% lost to context switching Juggling three tasks at a time = 20% of your productive time for each and 40% lost to context switching How to Realign Your Work So what do you do instead? Todd Herman suggests something called the Block and Tackle method. Dan Tricarico talks about this on his blog, The Zen Teacher as well. In the Block and Tackle method, you’re going to block off sections of your day to work on a single task. Nothing else is able to happen during that time block - you’re just going to tackle that one task. You’ll work on it with total focus during that time and when the time is up, you’re able to move to the next block.

Got Stress? The Zen Teacher is On Call… A Conversation with Dan Tricarico A teacher for over 25 years, Dan Tricarico loves his work, even views his classroom as a sanctuary of sorts. Teachers like Dan are passionate people. He, like most of us, chose this career to positively impact the world. Think about it. All the students in our classrooms have their own “stories” as Dan calls them. They’ve got their stuff to deal with – family drama, pressure from grades, hurt feelings from a friend. We have our stuff – the car needs tires, stacks of papers to mark. Now, pile on innumerable tests, pacing guides, meetings, and even school safety. Dan’s two books and his professional development arose from his own experiences with work-related stress. This inspiring educator provides us with pragmatic strategies that help us stay relaxed, focused, and in the moment with our kids. Because teachers need to take care of themselves in order to take care of students. To keep the passion alive, a little self-care if needed…and Dan’s the perfect person to help us take a little weight off our shoulders. Yippee! This week we talk with Dan Tricarico, author of the Zen Teacher and Sanctuaries. Topics include practicing self-care for teachers, the current state of education and whether school districts should hire teachers that are looking for a job or a calling.
My guest is Dan Tricarico, author of "The Zen Teacher: Creating Focus, Simplicity, and Tranquility in the Classroom." Our discussion will give you some more ideas for staying happy and healthy. It's up to you whether you implement them during this busy season, or wait to use them to help you start the year anew in January.
We all know that teaching is more demanding than ever, and we rise every day giving all we have to the challenge. But if you ever feel like you are not good enough to do all that is expected of you, this is the episode you'll want to hear. During today's episode, I am excited to feature an interview with Dan Tricarico as part of my Truth for Teachers podcast. Dan and I met when we were both speaking at a conference a couple of years ago, and I remember walking away from the conversation with him thinking, “This guy is the real deal.” That’s the phrase that stuck in my head because he just came across to me as being so grounded and so sincere in everything he said -- he was truly passionate about everything we spoke on and had a pure heart for helping kids and teachers. Last February, I was out in San Diego for another conference, and he and I sat down together and hashed things out a bit. We’ve been working for the past 7-8 months on creating something together that addresses teacher anxiety. It’s called Finally Free: The teacher toolkit for conquering anxiety, overwhelm, and the pressure to do more. Today, we’re going to give you some of our favorite mindset shifts and advice from the toolkit and talk about some ideas that will really make a big difference in how you feel. Dan and I are making one of the modules in the Finally Free toolkit available to you for free. It’s Module 1: Freedom from Comparison, which is designed for you to listen to when you’re feeling not good enough and comparing yourself to others. You can go to finallyfreetoolkit.com to learn more about the toolkit, and scroll down to the preview where you can download the audio and PDF for that first module on comparison right now. In today’s episode, I’ll talk about 6 steps to stop worrying about problems before they happen. Teachers are faced with an enormous amount of stressors throughout their days, weeks, and school years. Just the possibility of being moved to another grade level or school (and in some cases having no position at all) will keep the teacher's lounge abuzz with nervous energy and speculation about who's retiring, who's taking leave, and what's going to happen to everyone else. You see, anxiety, worry, and apprehension are completely useless emotions because they're based on potential problems in the future. Unlike fear, which is a response to problems we're facing in the present moment, anxiety does not produce anything positive. And, anticipating problems is an especially dangerous habit in the field of education, where policies and procedures seem to change on a dime for no apparent reason and against all logic. Listen in today to discover ways to consciously set our minds on the present reality and remind ourselves that the majority of problems we anticipate never happen. If you struggle with teacher anxiety and found this episode helpful, I want to let you know about a new resource that you may want to check out. It’s the first new product I’ve made for teachers in three years. I’ve partnered with Dan Tricarico to create this toolkit which is a collection of audio resources called Finally Free: The teacher toolkit for conquering anxiety, overwhelm, and the pressure to do more.
