After over 50 years working as an actress, Maureen Beattie is about to make her Hampstead Theatre debut in The Lightest Element, a brand new play by Stella Feehily. At the centre of the play is Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin, one of 20th Century Science's most significant figures. Despite her great discoveries, she's remained a fairly elusive figure and this play sets out to give her the recognition that many of her male counterparts have since received. The show will be directed by Alice Hamilton, who Maureen describes fondly of as being the best type of director who listens to everyone in the room. We also hear her talk about her excitement around getting to perform in Hampstead Theatre, having been a regular theatregoer there since it's early beginnings. In this new interview, Maureen Beattie talks about this exciting new play, shining a light on a truly fascinating figure who has remained out of the social consciousness. As former President of Equity, she also talks to us about the changes that have taken place over the course of her career, providing more opportunities for women and the introduction of safe spaces in rehearsal rooms. Last year, Maureen also returned to the RSC to play Celia in a cast of veteran actors production of As You Like It, opposite the likes of Geraldine James and Malcolm Sinclair. A veteran actress herself, her career has taken her from the RSC to the National Theatre to the Old Vic and the Royal Court. The Lightest Element runs at Hampstead Theatre until 12 October.

VISION ON SOUND

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 27, 2022 59:09

First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on November 27th 2022 In the early 1980s, GRANADA TELEVISION produced what is widely considered to be one of the all-time masterpieces of British Television Drama series, much of it filmed on location in India, and which went on to be sold all around the world as an example of the very finest of the kind of television series that British television could produce, although, like many older programmes, it is a series that is often overlooked in more recent polls of the greatest television series ever made, partly because it is based in an era that history is turning out to be far less comfortable with than it used to be, and partly because more recent shows do have a habit of making the modern audience forget pretty much everything that preceded it ever existed. We've talked before about some of the notable absences on those kinds of lists on earlier editions of VISION ON SOUND, and I'm often reminded of the DVD packaging on a certain highly regarded and popular, but otherwise fairly average, TV series which claimed THIS IS ABOUT AS GOOD AS BRITISH TELEVISION GETS! and wickedly thinking to myself “Oh that's a shame!”, so here on VISION ON SOUND we like to think that we're doing our own little bit to restore the reputation of certain television gems, and just remind the viewing public of one or two excellent programmes that they might largely just have forgotten all about. First broadcast between January and April 1984 THE JEWEL IN THE CROWN tells the story of the last few years of British Rule in India, taking place both during, and just after the Second World War, and stars a whole host of then-emerging television talents including ART MALIK, GERALDINE JAMES, TIM PIGOTT-SMITH, and CHARLES DANCE, playing alongside such names as SAEED JAFFREY, ERIC PORTER and PEGGY ASHCROFT to create an epic fourteen-part, thirteen-and-a-half hour television series based upon the four books making up what is known as THE RAJ QUARTET which were written by PAUL SCOTT between 1965 and 1975. Because he very much enjoyed watching the series on its first transmission nearly four decades ago, my occasional co-host SANDY McGREGOR has recently been re-watching the series, and so, this week, he returns, for once just on his own, to VISION ON SOUND to share his thoughts and observations upon this acknowledged television classic. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

Malcolm Bradbury's 1975 novel was adapted for TV by Christopher Hampton in 1981 finding a 10pm slot on BBC2 where it shocked, provoked and possibly titillated a newly Conservative Britain. They find much to enjoy therein as they consider the fading socialist dream of the 70s, the lens of a 1981 perspective on a 1975 novel (which itself is a lens on a 1972-set narrative), its treatment of sexuality and gender politics, and the glorious accuracy of what might just be the most perfect committee meeting ever filmed, A fantastic supporting cast included Geraldine James, Sir Michael Hordern, Isla Blair, Paul Brooke and Miriam Margolyes. Peter Pan is a 1950 musical adaptation of J. M. Barrie's play Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up with music and lyrics by Leonard Bernstein; it opened on Broadway on April 24, 1950.[1] This version starred Jean Arthur as Peter Pan, Boris Karloff in the dual roles of George Darling and Captain Hook, and Marcia Henderson as Wendy. The show was orchestrated by Hershy Kay and conducted by Benjamin Steinberg. The show ran for 321 performances, closing on January 27, 1951. The production was initially intended as a full-blown musical, with Bernstein composing a complete score for it, but was staged with only five songs – "Who Am I?", "Pirate's Song", "Plank Round", "Build My House", and "Peter Peter" – to accommodate the limited vocal ranges of the principals. In 2000, conductor Alexander Frey learned about the full score, and restored the omitted material, which included almost an hour of previously unperformed Bernstein music. The restored songs included "Captain Hook Soliloquy" and "Dream With Me". The world premiere recording of Bernstein’s complete score was released on CD in 2005, conducted by Frey, and featuring Broadway star Linda Eder in the role of Wendy Darling, and baritone Daniel Narducci as Captain Hook, on the Koch International Classics label. In September 2008 the world premiere performance of the full Bernstein score was performed in concert with Alexander Frey conducting the Gulbenkian Orchestra, and dialogue adapted from the original J. M. Barrie play by Nina Bernstein Simmons. Three performances were given in Cascais, Portugal, for a combined audience of over 10,000 people, and featured Geraldine James (narrator), John Sackville-West (Peter Pan), Charlotte Ellett and Rachel Nicholls(Wendy) and Nicholas Lester (Captain Hook). The first stage production of the full Bernstein score was given by Santa Barbara Theater (California) in December 2008, directed by Albert Ihde and again conducted by Alexander Frey. A new chamber adaptation of the score will be produced at the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts in June 2018, directed by Christopher Alden.

Sue Lawley's castaway this week is one of Britain's best known actresses - Geraldine James. Geraldine James became a household name 20 years ago for her performance as Sarah Layton in the epic, lavish series The Jewel in the Crown. But she is also used to far more earthy roles - one of her first television performances was portraying the real-life story of a deaf/mute prostitute from Bradford for which she won a TV Critics' award. The TV role she took after Jewel in the Crown was as the redoubtable and beefy Lady Maud in Blott on the Landscape and, later, more northern prostitutes in Band of Gold. She is a well respected stage actress - key roles include Portia in the Merchant of Venice opposite Dustin Hoffman and When I Was a Girl I Used to Scream and Shout. Her most recent screen work was as the prim and disapproving Women's Institute leader in the hugely successful film Calendar Girls. After school she studied drama at the Drama Centre, London, and spent three years in repertory theatre and school theatre before embarking on her television career; most recently as Lady Rowley in Trollope's He Knew He was Right. She was made an OBE in 2003.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: In Tears of Grief, Dear Lord We Leave Thee by Johann Sebastian Bach Book: The Fatal Shore by Robert Hughes Luxury: iPod
