Welcome to an all-new bonus episode of Films for the Void! In this episode, Landon interviews Cheekface - Los Angeles indie rock band Cheekface. Formed in 2017, the band combine a penchant for lyrical quips and a dry-aged sense of humor with a sound often compared anywhere from Pavement to LCD Soundsystem. Releasing a consistent stream of new music and making waves in 2022 with their record Too Much to Ask, the band recently announced a full US tour with Yungatita, happening this spring. However, that's not all: Just three weeks into the New Year, the band surprised fans with a brand new full length record, It's Sorted, released independently on their label New Professor.Landon chats with vocalist/guitarist Greg Katz, bassist Amanda Tannen, and drummer Echo Edwards about It's Sorted, collaborating on lyrics, changes in the hardcore scene, being so uncool that it's cool again, and some of their favorite movies - all on the latest episode of Films for the Void!TIME STAMPS00:00:00 Interview w/ Cheekface00:30:03 Round Robin Movie DiscussionTWITTER: @films_void$3/MONTH PATREON: patreon.com/films_voidLANDON'S TWITTER @igotdefevermanLANDON'S INSTAGRAM @duhfeverLANDON'S LETTERBOXD @landondefeverERIC'S TWITTER @ericwiththehairERIC'S INSTAGRAM @ericwiththebeardERIC'S LETTERBOXD @ericwiththehairArtwork by Annie CurleTheme Music by Meghan Gove

In this indie illustration our heroes dive deep into a newly discovered band. With thanks to a spotify algorithm, Jake was turned onto the gloriously moderate world of Californian indie rockers Cheekface, and their 2022 release ‘Too Much to Ask'. Hooked in by the immediacy of the dry mix, staying for the lyrics and… cheek of the band (can you really blame me with that pun, I kind of had to), Cheekface are proving strong contenders for the ASoundPurchase awards of 2023. Of course throughout the episode, they bring their warped sense of humour and plenty of laughs. We are in a period of rebuilding/rebranding and have temporarily paused the Friends of the Show subscriptions. That being said, you can browse through our Mellowtron and Retro designs in the merch store. You can also witness the page so big that it slows the entire internet each time it is loaded, the top 10 page on our site as well as drop us a cheeky voicemail message to suggest an album to study/say g'day.Head over to www.asoundpurchase.com/shop to see our range of merchandise, we want to keep both the regular pod and bonus pods free of cost, and you can help that to continue by purchasing some of the mugs, hoodies or shirts we have on offer.

This week Oliver looks at the new record from Canadian Dream Pop group Alvvays, 'Blue Rev'. This album carries the typical bubbly Alvvays sound, but is more fierce and noisy than their previous two releases. Also featured is L.A. band Cheekface, a band who's songwriting process is described as the band members trying to make each other laugh, but this doesn't mean they don't create great music with significant lyrical themes.
Cheekface - I Feel So Weird! from the 2022 album Too Much To Ask on New Professor. In times like we've been living through the past handful of years, humor has become more and more tantamount to survival. Cheekface understands that and displays it with aplomb. The Los Angeles-based band made up of Greg Katz, Amanda Tannen, Mark “Echo” Edwards channels Lou Reed, Jonathan Richman, and Stephan Malkmus with their speak-singing but has plenty of wisdom behind their absurdist, critical, and, dare I say, cheeky lyricism. Our Song of the Day “I Feel So Weird!,” off the band's recently released third record Too Much To Ask, is an excellent example of Cheekface's ability to make you spit-take with laughter at the same time as saying to yourself, “I feel that.” Over a mellow, bass-heavy rhythm Katz spews goofy statements like, “The difference between me and a dog is I am taller /Think about it, just think about it” before getting into a pretty great allegory for the feelings that anxiety often riddles upon a body, which is also an allusion towards dogs. Plus the Das Racist reference of “I'm at the combination Jamba Juice and therapist” makes it the gold standard of satirical lyricism. While Cheekface isn't big on music videos currently, watch the lyric video for other Too Much To Ask highlight “Featured Singer” and read the full post at KEXP.org.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Cheekface - "Reward Points" from the 2021 Emphatically Mo' (b-sides) EP on New Professor Music. Los Angeles-based trio Cheekface specialize in quirky, upbeat songs with sharp-as-a-whip, sardonic lyrics delivered in talk-sing by frontman Greg Katz, seemingly (obviously?) influenced by Stephen Malkmus. (Sample line from a different track: "Life is long / like a CVS receipt.") But don't let their buoyant punk-pop and the colorful cover art by bassist/vocalist Amanda Tannen fool you. Cheekface was formed in the wake of the 2017 presidential inauguration, and lyrics touch on anxiety, political discourse, and protest culture. "It's a challenge to write something meaningful when our terrible fascist government is destroying people's lives," Katz toldThe Grey Estates. "Personally, part of why I wanted to start this project was the desire to create something while the government is so destructive. Obviously the lyrics go to political places, and hopefully they capture some of the moral confusion that intelligent people are facing right now. But I also don't want the lyrics to be heavy-handed – I like heavy-handed political lyrics a lot actually, but with so much darkness in the world, we're not trying to add any more darkness with this particular band. Today's Song of the Day — a catchy ode to consumption — comes from their latest EP Emphatically Mo', a collection of b-sides from their 2021 full-length Emphatically No. Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We had a really awesome interview with Greg and Amanda of Cheekface. They have been super busy this year by releasing an album "Emphatically No." and a single called "We need a Bigger Dumpster." We talked about the specific style of artwork that Amanda created for the album covers. For their music, Cheekface writes their honest reflection on the world and that continued during their most recent releases. They have a unique style where there are metaphors and creative one liners throughout. Greg tells us about when the idea of "talk singing" came. Also talk about picking songs that sounded right for the album. A cool conversation about letting the band grow organically. Greg and Amanda agreed when they started the band that it would be about the creative fulfillment and not about how much money they are making. It has grown into a fun creation that puts out music that makes others happy. Check out the band below!
