1. His Rebellion2. His Affliction3. His MissionToday's sermon explored the life of Jonah and the consequences of running from God's calling. Through Jonah's journey—from his rebellion and flight to Tarshish, through his affliction in the belly of the fish, to his eventual mission in Nineveh—we saw how sin always costs us more than we want to pay and takes us farther than we want to go. Yet we also witnessed God's incredible mercy, not only toward the wicked people of Nineveh, but also toward His rebellious servant. This message challenges us to examine our own lives: Are we sleeping while storms rage around us? Are we running from God's clear calling? And do we care more about our own comfort than the eternal destiny of lost souls?Takeaways:- God's call is clear and direct, but obedience is our choice. Just as God told Jonah to "Arise, go to Nineveh," He has called each of us with a higher purpose. We must ask ourselves: Who has chartered our course? Are we sailing toward God's priorities or our own?- Running from God always leads downward, and sin will cost us. Jonah paid the fare, went down into the ship, and descended into the belly of the fish. When we rebel against God's calling, we always go down—spiritually, emotionally, and relationally. The good news is that God's mercies are new every morning, and He is the God of second chances.- Our concern for souls should outweigh our concern for comfort. Jonah cared more about a plant that gave him shade than 120,000 people who escaped eternal judgment. We must examine our hearts: Do we have urgency to reach the lost and lonely with the message of hope, or are we more focused on our own convenience and comfort? As we move forward this week, let's commit to listening to God's voice, responding to His calling with urgency, and extending His love and mercy to those around us who desperately need to hear the Gospel.

Join hosts Rolf Jacobson, Karoline Lewis, and Matt Skinner for this Third Sunday of Advent episode as they explore John the Baptist's profound question from prison: "Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?" (Matthew 11:2-11) The hosts examine John's struggle with doubt and disappointment while imprisoned by Herod Antipas, offering a deeply human perspective on faith when reality doesn't match expectations. They explore how Jesus responds not with rebuke but with evidence of the kingdom unfolding: the blind see, the lame walk, the deaf hear, and the dead are raised. Karoline suggests building a sermon around John's central question, exploring themes of expectation, waiting, and what we're actually looking forward to in Jesus' coming. Matt highlights how Jesus' answer reveals kingdom work happening one person at a time rather than through dramatic displays of power, connecting this back to the vision of the Sermon on the Mount from just four chapters earlier. The conversation delves into the meaning of "blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me" and discusses how this might be a subtle correction to John's expectations about the pacing and style of messianic work. The hosts emphasize the importance of "go and tell what you hear and see" as an Advent practice of noticing where God is already at work. The James reading introduces patience as a necessary Advent practice, though the hosts humorously acknowledge how difficult it is to hear "just be patient" when you're suffering or waiting for change. They explore the tension between John's radical immediacy and James' call to patient endurance. Our year will be full of examples of leadership from Nehemiah's life. He not only organized and encouraged people (and artfully handled all opposition), but his greatest achievement may have been his loving leadership. Let's become the men God has called us to be — fully committed to Him, His Word, and His Mission.

Stephen's love for math developed through personal support from his mother during his struggles. The SAT Math Guy was born out of the need for digital resources during the pandemic. Creating a faceless YouTube channel allowed Stephen to overcome personal insecurities. Early video production was challenging, but commitment helped him improve over time. This morning, our Outreach Director, Drew Paulette, guided us through the third week of our Pentecost Moment series. We are living in the age of the Holy Spirit. From Pentecost to today, the Spirit — the third person of the Trinity — has come to dwell in us. And while it's easy to focus on what the Spirit means for us individually, Drew reminded us that God poured out His Spirit for His Church and for His Mission. Where the fire of God's presence was once distant and inaccessible, it now resides within each believer. That fire empowers us to carry God's mission into a dark world, lighting it up through the proclamation of the good news. This mission isn't just for pastors, evangelists, seminary grads, or those who seem naturally gifted — it's for all of us, empowered by the Spirit, called to carry the light of Christ into the world.

Have you ever had someone tell you that the motive behind their decision(s) was that God was leading them? Did you ever wonder how it was that they knew God was leading them? What if He is not leading you and you make that claim? On some level, does that make you guilty of breaking the 9th Commandment? In case you have forgotten what that commandment states, here it is: You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor (Exod. 20:16). Is it also possible that by using Gods name as an excuse for your choices in life, that you are also guilty of violating the 3rdcommandment, which states: You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain (Exod. 20:7). You need to understand that God is holy, and He is serious about how we treat His name and how we approach Him. So, how do you know what the will of God is and when is it okay to make the bold declaration that God is leading you...? Get some clue how to know Gods will from Proverbs 3:5-6, Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight (Prov. 3:56). But what do you do with all the factors that affect how we humans make decisions such as: Cognitive biases: What happens when our decisions are shaped by our biases and affirmed by information and media that confirms our existing beliefs. Emotional state: How we are feeling can have a tremendous effect on our ability to reason and make decisions. Cultural factors: The culture you grew up in or the one that surrounds you today can affect your perception of truth and how you make decisions. Situational factors: Your physical atmosphere, social environment, time constraints, and circumstances that have brought you to your decision all shape the decision-making process. We have so many things competing for our hearts and it can be very difficult to discern what part of the decision-making process is Gods will and leading, and what part is our feelings and wants. So, how can you decern what the will of God is for your life and choices? I believe Acts 20:17-38 is helpful in that it shows us five things Paul practiced that helped him understand what Gods will was for his life regardless of his feelings and the circumstances that surrounded him. Paul was Concerned About What Gods Word Said About Everything (vv. 20-21, 27). The reason why Paul spent over two years in Ephesus was for the same reason he completed three missionary journeys, and that was to declare, ...the whole purpose of God. Paul declared the full counsel of Gods Word while in Ephesus. Jesus commanded His followers: Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations... teaching them to follow all that I commanded you... (Matt. 28:19-20), and Paul took that command very seriously. All that Paul had to offer and give to the Ephesians was the Jesus of the Holy Scriptures. Listen, Paul did not just teach and preach the Bible, his life and choices were governed by the Word of God. How does one get to the place where he or she is able to declare all that is beneficial from the Word of God without first being in the Word of God privately? What is the goal of being in Gods word? Paul answered that question in his epistle to the Philippians: That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death; if somehow I may attain to the resurrection from the dead (Phil. 3:10-11). You will not get to know Jesus if you are not listening to His voice through His word, and if you are not listening to His voice, you will not know His will. Step #1 for knowing the will of God: What does the word of God say about it? Paul Made Sure His Choices Lined Up with the Mission of God (vv. 17-19, 24) What is the mission of God? For from the rising of the sun even to its setting, My name shall be great among the nations, and in every place frankincense is going to be offered to My name, and a grain offering that is pure; for My name shall be great among the nations, Declares the Lord (Mal. 1:11)! John piper wrote in his book, Let the Nations be Glad: Missions exist because worship doesnt and he was right! Paul came to Ephesus because the Ephesians worshiped all kinds of idols, but they did not worship God because they did not know Jesus. Paul entered Ephesus with a desire to serve the Lord with all humility and with tears and trials because his purpose in life was to make Jesus known first and foremost! Paul did not think he was better than the Ephesians, but because he had a great and accurate view of who God is, he was willing to die to self for the purpose of living for Jesus. This is what he said in verse 24, But I do not consider my life of any account as dear to myself, so that I may finish my course and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify solemnly of the gospel of Gods grace. For Paul, his mission would include bringing the gospel to the gentiles (see Acts 9:1-19). For you, Gods mission may look different, but the one thing that it does have in common with Pauls mission is to make Jesus known where He is not known. If you are a Christian, you have been called into the mission of God. That does not mean that you must become a missionary, although it may. What the mission of God means for you is simply this: God has called you to your world, which includes your family, neighborhood, work, and church to use your talents and gifts to reach the lost and partner with your local church to accomplish the mission Jesus gave His Church. Wherever you find yourself, Jesus said of your redeemed life: You are the salt of the earth.... you are the light of the world (Matt. 5:13-14). You are Jesus ambassador in your home, in your neighborhood, among your friends, where you work, and as a part of a community of Jesus followers within His Church. Step #2 for knowing the will of God: Will my decision allow me to continue to participate in Gods mission? Paul Was Sensitive to the Holy Spirits Leading (vv. 22-23) Paul was sensitive to the Holy Spirit for two primary reasons: His head and heart were affected by the time he spent in the Word of God, and he strived to walk in a manner worthy of his calling (Eph. 4:1). The fruit of listening to Gods word and obedience to it, is the filling of the Holy Spirit. From the moment you are born again, you are indwelt by the Holy Spirit (John 14:15-24; 16:7), you are sealed by the Holy Spirit (Eph. 1:13-14), and you are baptized by the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:5). But with the filling of the Holy Spirit comes power and a sensitivity to His leading; this is what Paul wrote to the Ephesian Church and practiced: Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. (Eph. 4:30) And do not get drunk with wine, in which there is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit... (Eph. 5:18) Jesus promised that to every true Christian who sets their hearts to follow Jesus in faith and trust will receive the Holy Spirit Whom He called, The Helper (John 14:16-17). Jesus promised that the ministry of the Holy Spirit will be to, guide you into all the truth... (John 16:13). This is exactly what Paul experienced throughout his lifetime even when others had a hard time understanding it (as we will see in Acts 21:7-14). This is why he called the elders together before he left Ephesus to tell them how the Holy Spirit was leading him: And now, behold, bound by the Spirit, I am on my way to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there, except that the Holy Spirit solemnly testifies to me in every city, saying that chains and afflictions await me (Acts 20:2223). For Paul, the compulsion he had from the Holy Spirit did not mean that he understood or was aware what the total outcome would be for choosing to leave Ephesus, but the call was clear, and he had to go. Paul also understood that he would not be able to come back: And now behold, I know that all of you, among whom I went about preaching the kingdom, will no longer see my face (v. 25). Sometimes the will of God is a call to leave what is stable and comfortable to a place of uncertainty and danger. Tony Merida, in his commentary on Acts, made the following observation: The goal of life is not to have a long life but a full life, one lived to the glory of Jesus Christ. For some Christians such faithfulness will involve hardship, persecution, and even martyrdom. Pauls example here shows how one can endure such experiences: We must value Jesus above everything, and we must rely on the Spirit.[1] Step #3 for knowing the will of God: Am I walking in step with the Holy Spirit and is He leading me in the decision-making process? Paul Understood God Was Greater than His Mission (vv. 32-34) Paul understood two critically important things that are worth considering regarding the will of God: First, God loved the Ephesian Christians infinitely more than Paul ever could. Second, God didnt need Paul but chose to use him and would use others in his place after he left. What was required of Paul and the elders of the Ephesian Church was to trust the God, Who does great and unsearchable things, wonders without number (Job 5:8-9). With Pauls departure there would be dangers for the Ephesian Christians, so he warned the elders; he warned them that savage wolves would creep in among them with the intent to destroy them (see vv. 28-31). Just because God was leading Paul into another season of life and ministry, did not mean that the ministry God used him to establish was safe. However, for three years, Paul was preparing the elders and the church for the day when God would lead him elsewhere. Paul also understood that God would provide the church what was needed in the wake of his departure, so he was confidently able to assure them: And now I entrust you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified (v. 32). What they needed most, Paul gave them... and that was God and His Word. Step #4 for knowing the will of God: Understand and trust that God is infinitely bigger than you are and is capable of doing great and unsearchable things... without your involvement. Paul Was Committed to Prayer (vv. 36-38) Paul and the elders did not end with hugs and handshakes, but fervent prayer together as brothers committed to the same mission! It is critically important to note that before there were any goodbyes, before the decision was official, before Paul got on the boat, he and the leaders of the church prayed. Verses 36-38 are such a touching conclusion to Acts 20 as it is a reminder that there is no point in going anywhere if God is not leading you and although He may be leading you, it does not mean that it will be easy; consider these verses again: When he had said these things, he knelt down and prayed with them all. And they all began to weep aloud and embraced Paul, and repeatedly kissed him, grieving especially over the word which he had spoken, that they would not see his face again. And they were accompanying him to the ship. This was not the first time Paul, and the elders, prayed about where God was leading, based on what we know of Pauls life, prayer was the culture of his life. Because it was the culture of his life, he was not getting on any boat before they prayed together! Ephesians 6:18-19 gives us a glimpse into the prayer life of the apostle: With every prayer and request, pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be alert with all perseverance and every request for all the saints... (Eph. 6:18). Regarding his departure, Paul prayed all the time, with all persistence, for the glory of God and the good of Christs Church! It is important to also understand that Paul did not pray alone but prayed with those his decision affected most. Step #5 for knowing the will of God: Bathe your life and choices with prayer with a willingness to die to what you want for the purpose of living for God and His mission for your life. Conclusion You should know that when you follow the will of God for your life, it may not always be easy, comfortable, or agreeable for those in your life and world. It will be hard on both those who love you and agitating for those who do not share your love for God and Christ-centered world view. The safest and most secure pathway forward is to follow Jesus. When Paul arrived at Ptolemais, he stayed with Philip and while with him, a prophet by the name Agabus took Pauls belt and bound his own feet and said, This is what the Holy Spirit says: In this ways the Jews in Jerusalem will bind the man who owns this belt and hand him over to the Gentiles (Acts 21:7-11). When everyone in the house heard what Agabus said to Paul, they begged him not to go up to Jerusalem because they loved him. Agabus did not say anything Paul did not already know, but it was painful for those who loved Paul to hear and accept. Pauls response was both tender and firm: What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus (Acts 21:13). At this point Pauls decision was affirmed by the Word of God, the mission of God for his life, the prompting and leading of the Holy Spirit, a confidence in Gods sovereignty and power, and a decision bathed in prayer, so he was sure of what Gods will was for his life and he could not be persuaded. Those who loved Paul saw this: And since he would not be persuaded, we became quiet, remarking, The will of the Lord be done! (v. 14). So, before you declare that God is leading you to take that new job, enter into a relationship or marriage, or to move from anywhere to anywhere be sure to check what you are considering against the same five checkpoints we see in Pauls life: What does the Word of God say about your decision? If Gods word speaks against it, then it is not Gods will for your life. Will my decision allow me to continue to participate in Gods mission? If your decision will further remove you from Gods mission and His people, then it may not be the will of God for your life. Are you sure the Holy Spirit is leading you? If you are not living in obedience to God, your perspective of what Gods will for your life may be severely perverted. Do you really believe that God can do great and unsearchable things... without your involvement but wants to use you anyway and that He is about His glory for your good? Did you pray with open hands before God almighty concerning His will for your life related to whatever is before you? Pauls decision to leave Ephesus ultimately resulted in his martyrdom in Rome, but if he did not leave, he would not have written Ephesians, Colossians, Philemon, Philippians, 1 and 2 Timothy, and Titus... and those glorious epistles would not have been included in our Bibles as holy Scripture. Welcome back podcast family and I hope you're ready to get fired-up today! I've got a “special” episode for you this week as I only get the opportunity to speak at Chapel at Christian Unified Schools 2x per year—and this is ONE of them. Before we tune-in “Live” to that chapel/keynote, I am going to spit some fire on 3 things:  One of my favorite quotes. A MINDSET reminder to make sure you are doing “it.” My thoughts on the Super Bowl, LEADERSHIP, & winning (even though I didn't know the winner when I recorded this). On the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, Fr. Joshua Fons speaks about expectations: the expectations the Jewish people had, and the expectations we have for how God will act. He invites us to consider how our own expectations, particularly the way our hearts break for the brokenness of the world around us, might be the very place that the Lord is inviting us into His Mission.

God has placed a burden on our pastors' hearts to go deeper in discipleship at The Rock Church, in response to Jesus' command to teach and make disciples. Together, we will explore what it means to be fully devoted to Christ, equipping ourselves not just for personal growth, but also as we lead, and our influence on others. This week we continue are journey to empower every member for ministry and get everyone engaged in the mission. Welcome to Run With Horses! My name is Norman and my goal is to help you thrive as a follower of Jesus. The spiritual life is both incredibly simple and potentially the most difficult part of your life. God invites you to live intentionally and on His mission. It's very cool that we can do that together! Thank you for joining me today! If you are new to the show, you can find our past shows on our website, runwithhorses.net. I have spent several weeks focusing on a definition of the church and the current discussion about a discipleship pathway is best understood in the context of our broader look at the church. If you have been enjoying the show, I would appreciate it if you would leave a review wherever you are listening! And as always, your questions, comments and feedback are welcome. Write me at norman@runwithhorses.net. And now, on with the show... (27:00) ******* (27:00) (end 23:00) Habits - Pursuing Community - some effort required! 1 Corinthians 1:10-11 Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. 11 For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe's household, that there are contentions among you. 1 Thessalonians 5:12-15 And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. Be at peace among yourselves. 14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. 15 See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all. Colossians 3:12-17 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. 14 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. (23:00) ****** (23:00) (end 0:00) MY WORKING DEFINITION OF CHURCH - Consider in Light of RELEASE A CHURCH is a group of followers of Jesus who worship Him in spirit and truth, humbly offering their lives as living sacrifices, together living out the MISSION of Jesus as His witnesses TO THE WORLD, by sharing the gospel and making disciples through teaching obedience to His commands as they edify and EQUIP OTHERS to join them on HIS MISSION. The discipleship pathway is an intentional plan to equip others to be on the mission of Jesus. We want to RELEASE people for ministry, the pathway is a plan to get the there with the support of the church! Think about the goals of the pathway. How do they fit in with the goal of RELEASING people for ministry? a. self-feeding Christians - you can't release immature believers, disciple to maturity and mission b. everyday missionaries – everyone on the mission of Jesus, people are released into their family and neighborhood first! c. disciple-makers - we want to release disciple makers, not church attenders or nominal believers or people with their own agenda. d. pastors, church planters, missionaries - result of God'd leading in the lives of the released! e. new churches - result of the church related in our communities and going to new communities. f. all members of the church, shepherded well - a byproduct of healthy disciple making We are on the Fourth step in the Pathway; RELEASE ENGAGE, CONNECT, EQUIP, RELEASE Last week I mentioned that We are over-programmed and under-discipled. And our Programs just aren't producing many mature disciple makers! For many of us programs have been a way to stay busy and feel good about ourselves without actually engaging in the mission of Jesus to make disciples who take the message of reconciliation to the world. ##Think about it. It is unfortunately possible to teach Sunday School and not be making disciples. It is possible to lead a children's ministry and not make disciples. Music ministry, be a deacon, be an elder and even be a pastor without making disciples? Too often true. To accomplish our purpose as we understand it from our definition of the church, we need to intentionally embrace the mission of Jesus and make practically real-world steps to change our habits and lifestyle to one that follows Jesus. Individually we can accept that and desire that kind of life change and spiritual growth, but what is the role of the church in this process? ##Can we reimagine how we DO church with disciple making as the goal AND process? What does a disciple making Sunday School look like? How do we encourage, train and release our church leaders at every level to be disciple makers? The Discipleship Pathway gives us steps to take that move us from where we are to active engagement in the mission, one step at a time. The church has a role in: 1.Education: teaching the truth of God's Word and what the Christian life looks like 2.Training: sharing the skills and tools that will help us use our gifts and get involved in the work of the ministry 3.Encouragement 4.Vision 5.Partnership 6.Ongoing support 7. Evangelism - but primarily supporting members in their outreach I feel like I am probably missing some things but you get the point, The church body corporately supports the individual disciple that make up the church in carrying out the work of the ministry. (00:00) END PART 1 ******** (27:00) BEGIN PART 2 (end 5:00) How do we RELEASE the church for ministry? The church leadership set the tone for the church. Maybe a good illustration is that the church leadership lets everyone know what STYLE, KEY and TEMPO we are playing the song in. God has given us the song of praise, the life of sacrificial worship to be carried out by disciple makers. As a local body, we need to figure out what that song sounds like in our current environment. Culture, people groups, sub-cultures, economy, politics, geography, and the like all influence the song. We must know our local culture. What issues are people dealing with and what are they concerned about? What does God have to say about these issues? We want to identify natural pain points in the community as well as natural connecting points. ###REF: https://research.lifeway.com/2020/08/26/4-steps-to-shepherding-your-church-through-community-engagement/ ___1. Lead people to engage in local cultural issues. KEY is LOCAL. What are people in your neighborhood talking about? Get to know individuals and talk to them! I'm not talking about standing in a peaceful protest line (though that is one way), but an even more personal connection—whether through helping a young mother see the truth of the gospel or coming alongside her decision to carry full term. Engagement might mean mentoring to that young man who is scared to death about being a single dad at such a young age. We want to be involved in a personal way. There are always cultural issues in our communities that you can begin to pray over to see where God is leading you and your church to be more involved. ___2. Provide for needs in your local community while sharing the gospel. There is a tendency for volunteers to merely invite to church those who come through the door and not necessarily engage with the gospel. Make it a practice to be present to pray for those with needs and as doors open to share the truth of the gospel. All church members need to be trained to do the same. Where can we be involved AS A CHURCH? Within that context, members should be encouraged and empowered to pursue individual relationships. ___3. Provide regular opportunities for evangelism training. Evangelism training on a regular basis isn't happening in many of our churches. I recommend at least once a year a church should provide opportunities for people who have a desire to learn how to better share their faith. There are a couple of kinds of training that should take place. First, Education - Why we need to share the Gospel, What is the Gospel? 1-2 simple clear methods to memorize so we can come back to them and build on them. Second, Practice - Role-playing, testimonies and the like give practice putting the truth into your own words. More time thinking and talking through the gospel make it easier to do when the opportunity arises out in public. Third, Evangelistic Bible Study - every member should learn how to lead the discussion through a chronological Bible study in a small group. ___4. Lead your church to participate in community events. Every community has events throughout the year. Some events would allow you to set up a booth alongside other vendors. Local farmers market, a business fair, 5k races, concerts in the park, etc. Have branded church materials available, business cards as well as flyers with links to the church website and information about who you are as a church. The more members you have participating the better! Be a church family enjoying life together! Think outside the box, but keep the need to share the gospel clearly in the forefront of the minds of your people. (5:00) ********* (5:00) (end 1:00) DOCTRINE September – Holy Spirit Renewing Work of the Spirit 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. Titus3:4-7 But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, 5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. **(1:00)** The church is an unstoppable force when it is united and on the mission of Jesus. Divisions, apathy, and distractions can pull us off the mission and into other pursuits that don't have eternal value. How can you stay on the journey together? How can you encourage others in your church when they are beat up by life? The life of following Jesus is an adventure that we undertake together. We need each other! And we all have to take it one day at a time. Let's commit to following Jesus today and giving Him the freedom to change us and use us on His mission. Thanks for joining me again today! Hebrews 10:24-25 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. What are the goals of a discipleship pathway? a. self-feeding Christians b. everyday missionaries – everyone on the mission of Jesus c. disciple-makers d. pastors e. new churches f. all members of the church, shepherded well We are still on the THIRD step in the Pathway; EQUIP ENGAGE, CONNECT, EQUIP, RELEASE What is equipping in the church? It is preparing each member of the church to use their talents, gifts, and abilities to carry out the work of the ministry throughout their lives. First, what is the WORK OF THE MINISTRY? The best simple definition I have heard is that it is the work of bringing God's message to people. We are all called and equipped, as members of the body of Christ, for this ministry. There is a further equipping, seen in Eph. 4 carried out corporately by the church as we build each other up and prepare members for ministry. Church leadership is given the responsibility of leading the way in equipping all members for service and engagement in the mission of Christ. Eph. 4:1-5 I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, 2 with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, 3 endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. (00:00) END PART 1 ******** (27:00) BEGIN PART 2 Eph. 4:11-16 11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ— 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love. Walk Worthy You are called Attitude matters – humble, loving Relationships Lead - who has God placed around you? Unity is Important The Church is key for maturity – seek, pursue Christ-likeness for everyone We all have gifts the church needs.Use yours to build up the church. The goal is maturity – Christ-likeness, nothing less We build each other up. **Be Intentional. As an Individual, and as a Church.** Pray for growth. Work toward growth. Growth/ Maturity means a life lived on the mission of Jesus. - Sharing the Good News - Teaching biblical truth - Practicing a lifestyle that puts Jesus and His mission first. Purpose and priorities! - Serve others – consider others interests and spiritual needs - Live out the one another's – you need the church - look for accountability – meet regularly with others who are on mission. - sacrifice of time and resources for the mission – live with eternal values - intentionally thinking about others. In your church, in your community. # Where are these relationships intentionally happening? Sunday School, small groups, homes of motivated disciples who constantly reach out to others to build them up, coffee shops, restaurants, etc. # Pastors – be visionary, help your people see the calling to be actively engaged in disciple making, make sure your church provides training and space to live out that calling! From the pulpit – vision, theology, motivation In the smaller groups – training, skills, encouragement In the smallest groups – support, accountability and personal direction, training as needed. (5:00) ********* (5:00) DOCTRINE August – Jesus September – Holy Spirit Jesus Intercessor intercede - to intervene between parties with a view to reconciling differences : mediate Romans 8:31-35 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? Hebrews 7:23-25 Also there were many priests, because they were prevented by death from continuing. 24 But He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. 25 Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. 1 John 2:1-2 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. **(1:00)** As a member of God's family you have a part to play in preparing God's people for ministry. Prayerfully consider how God wants to use you to build up you church family and strengthen them for service. And stop to think, what is your role in the mission of Jesus to the world? We considered that it must be relational and built on the foundation of God's Word. This week we look at the practical aspects of equipping in the church. What does that actually look like in the life of the church? (27:00) ******* (27:00) Habits - Meditating on Scripture Joshua 1:8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Psalm 1:1-3 1 Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; 2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. 3 He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. Meditation is like chewing. It is slow and thorough. Write notes about what you see in this passage. Make connections between the various sections. Ask yourself, “What do these words from God say?” “What do they mean?” Place who you are and what you do next to this passage and ask God to examine you. The discipleship pathway is an intentional plan to equip others to be on the mission of Jesus. Don't forget the goals of the pathway. What are the goals of a discipleship pathway?  a. self-feeding Christians  b. everyday missionaries – everyone on the mission of Jesus  c. disciple-makers  d. pastors  e. new churches  f. all members of the church, shepherded well We are still on the THIRD step in the Pathway;   EQUIP ENGAGE, CONNECT, EQUIP, RELEASE Merriam-Webster definition:  1: to furnish for service or action by appropriate provisioning Ie. equip an army 2:  to make ready : prepare What is equipping in the church?  It is preparing each member of the church to use their talents, gifts, and abilities to carry out the work of the ministry throughout their lives. It's answering the question.  If the church is made of the people and every member is responsible for the work of the ministry, how do we intentionally help each other prepare and carry out that work, inside and outside the four walls.  Last week we gave some guidelines. Equipping in it's best form is Relational. It is fundamentally Speaking the Truth. God's Word and the Holy Spirit supply the Wisdom that we need. But when we ended last week we still had the question, what does that look like in the local church. Equipping for the work of the ministry is actually a part of all that the church does, although we don't always do it intentionally. Consider our discipleship pathway.     • Engage: As the church talks about outreach and community connections, some members are just learning that we SHOULD be thinking about those outside the church. This is the beginning of equipping new members of the church. It shares the mission of Jesus to the world and the part the church plays in carrying it out.     • Connect: The church needs to teach foundational Biblical truth to new members as well as those who are considering what it might mean for them to follow Jesus. In this phase the church answers the questions, “What is the church and how do I become part of the church?  Consistent Bible teaching during this phase helps put down a firm foundation that a strong  Christian life and ministry can be built on. What is the biblical basis for service?     • Equip: Laying the foundation of a Biblical life should challenge believers to consider how God has gifted them to serve the church. Equipping often begins in a believers life as a time of discovery. Who am I, How has God designed me and what do I need to live my call as an everyday missionary in the world?        During the early life of a new believer, it is helpful to help them think through both corporate aspects of ministry in the church and the individual ministry that every believer has.  Equipping here helps answer the questions, “What ministry opportunities best fit my gifts and interests?” and “What training or skills could I get to help me serve better?”        Spiritual Growth: As a believer grows and connects with people and the ministries of the church, they should begin to get involved and see the need for further growth and skill training. Part of the Equipping ministry of the church is making it clear what training the church offers and how to take advantage of it. Training that the church recommends from other organizations, counseling centers, bible college, etc. are also kept available as part of helping every member grow in life and service. Equipping is answering the question, “How do I get ongoing training for ministry? “     • Release: Once individuals are fully engaged in the mission, both in edifying the church and in reaching out in the community, Equipping takes the form of helping workers sustain a life of purpose and ministry through the challenges that life brings. Ongoing support, counseling, refreshment through deep relationships and the ministry of God's Word help the church to sustain ministry and grow spiritually. Practically, Where and How does the church do all of this? 1. The Scriptural Foundation is taught through weekly sermons and Sunday school lessons. This is the part most churches do well. We are good at teaching Biblical truth. The theology behind what we do is taught week after week through expository messages that help us understand who God is and what He is doing in the world through His church. 2. Small groups are a place where a lot of equipping happens organically. In the midst of conversations and life challenges we have opportunities to help each other grow and learn to live out our faith in relationships. Leaders and hosts of small groups play a big part in the equipping ministry of the church as they model healthy, Jesus-centered relationships to the group. Here we talk about how our theology works itself out in our daily lives. Encouragement to act soon what we believe. Practical guidance on how to carry out ministry in the community and comfort when we struggle. 3. Individual relationships in the church are often a space where equipping takes place although some individuals are more intentional about it than others. 4. General ministry training and skill development (for SS teachers, deacons, sound booth workers, etc) are carried out either on an individual, as needed basis, or on a yearly schedule with a group. Depending on the focus this can range from a classroom setting to a more informal gathering where issues are talked through and modeled. 5. Specific ministry training is usually handled in a small group or individually as needed. Staff and pastoral training, etc. (00:00)  END PART 1 ******** (27:00)  BEGIN PART 2 (5:00) ********* (5:00) DOCTRINE August – Jesus September – Holy Spirit The Humility of Jesus Philippians 2:1-9 1 Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, 2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. 5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.  **(1:00)** Next week we will continue exploring how we, as a local church can work to equip each other for the work of the ministry. Practically, there are decisions we make about what, when and where that affects our ability to be disciple of Jesus who are equipping other disciples of Jesus.  When the church meets together and has discussion about what we do, we have to consider how we can best do the work of equipping people for ministry if we want to see spiritual growth in the church. There is a limit to how much we can grow without active engagement in the mission of Jesus. Thanks for joining me again today! He is also a podcaster, conducting teachings on these subject and the podcast has the same name, the “God Centered Concept Podcast.” AmenThe last time Scott was on, we discussed the “Fall of a Nation,” using Biblical examples of what has happened here, in the United States, when a nation turns from serving God. We left off with there being absolutely no doubt we have turned our backs on God and given him the infamous middle finger saluteIs there any wonder WHY things are going the way they are in this country right now? Many people, some in very influential ministry positions, claim “God will never forget the United States of America… He will preserve this nation… He will protect this nation…, etc.”WHY?If He didn't do it for Israel – what makes the United States any better than Israel when they turned their backs on God?Ok… Ok… so YOU say, you've chosen Christ. Ok. I get that…Do you know who He REALLY is?Do you know what His REAL MISSION is all about?Do you understand HOW He is planning on accomplishing His mission?Do you even know why the NUMBER 4 is so significant to His mission?Well, you are about to find the answers to these questions and more. Amen!Help me welcome back to the program, Scott Wright! Scott, it's great to talk to you again!Ok… We have a lot to talk about today and I could go off in any myriad numbers of directions. But let's try to stay focused today… amen?Ok, I gave a list of questions. Before we get to the first one, “Do you know who Christ really is?” – can you tell us WHY the answers to these questions we are about to go over are so significant to what we see happening right now, in this nation, the world and in Israel?First question, “Who is Christ?”What is so important about “His Mission” that we are not really aware of in our society today? How is He planning on accomplishing His mission and how far along on the plan is He now? What is so significant about the number “4” and why should we be aware of it today?Tie all of this up for us in a big, pretty bow and relate it to what the current events are telling us about to happen…Scott, as usual, you give us a lot to think about and pray about. If someone has a question or would like to reach out to you for more information, how can they do that?I'll put links to all of this in the show notes below…Folks, the information Scott Wright has shared with us today is vital for your life.
