1 Samuel 7: 1-11 // Tom Nelson The David and Goliath story is more than an underdog story, more than a big giant who is slain, rather it is a story about eyes that truly see. A story not so much about special courage as it is about spiritual insight. Not so much about an underdog who wins, but a shepherd boy who sees differently. Faith sees differently! Faith sight is different from eyesight. Through the eyes of faith, you can be confident that God is with you, God is ahead of you. Ultimately, the battle is the Lord's. That all things ultimately are worked out for good by a Sovereign God who loves us and wills the very best for us. When we get our eyes on God, the difficult circumstances, fearful obstacles, griefs, disappointments, and losses we face are put in a more hopeful perspective. Through the eyes of faith, even large giants look small. Secondly, even slim odds are God-sized opportunities. One of our greatest challenges to continue to walk by faith is that we tend to forget God's past faithfulness to us. Those victory moments when God has provided for us, protected us and his unmistakable presence has been there for us. We never outgrow the need to remember God's past faithfulness to us. So how are you remembering to remember? How are you tangibly remembering God's past faithfulness, his provision, his protection, and his unmistakable presence in your life?Sermon Notes: https://www.bible.com/events/49085483Prayer Requests: https://ccefc.ccbchurch.com/goto/forms/2509/responses/new23.06.04

1 Samuel 17:1-58 / Paul Brandes We all love a good underdog story, don't we? They uniquely capture our hearts, minds, and attention. Why is that? Is it maybe because we've all been the underdog? We've all been counted out, looked over, down on the mat while the judge is counting to 10. Except for One… Who is it? Who has never been an underdog? Reading Psalms 57:1-11 (NLT) ~ Scripture reading followed by discussion. When Saul wanted David dead, David calls out to God. David understanding that God was the one who could provide everything He needed. 1 Samuel 16. God has a plan for our lives. We have a call to reflect the life of our Servant King, Jesus, making disciples, being a royal priest hood, and we can trust God to fulfill the purpose of our lives when we face obstacles and opposition as we answer the call. Singing praises realigns your heart on God. When he faced Goliath David declared that the LORD would be exalted. David is an example of finding his confidence in God for his victory, using his victory to exalt God and not himself, and the joy that comes.
Sean continues the theme of the God of breakthrough and breakout this Sunday by focusing on having a breakthrough faith. We can only run the race of life and get over the obstacles in our way if we put our faith in the one who causes breakthrough. In Matthew 17, 14 onward, Jesus rebukes the disciples for their lack of faith before healing the boy who had seizures. If we have faith as small as a mustard seed we can move the mountains before us – fear, dread, trauma, worry and so on. If we have a greater level of faith we shall see miracles break out as ‘mountains' are moved in our lives. Sean quoted hearing Bill Johnson from Bethel church who stated that whatever we tolerate will dominate our lives…. But, God is the God of all things and is over and above all things and can break through all things. We've been made to put our faith and relationship in Christ, the one who breaks out, but it's faith that we must activate to see these things happen. Hebrews 11 defines faith – having confidence in what we hope for but can't see. The Breakthrough is not always instant, but God rewards those that diligently seek Him. Scripture has many stories of those who placed fervent faith in God and were rewarded with breakthrough and breakout…. Abraham and Isaac – Abraham told his son “The Lord will provide the sacrifice”, and He did! Joseph being sold into slavery by his brothers - the promise from God being fulfilled many years later David and Goliath - David said to the Philistine “you come against me with sword and spear and Javelin but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel. Whom you have defied this day, the Lord will deliver you into my hand and I will strike you down and cut off your head. This very day. I will give your carcasses to the Philistine Army to the birds and to the wild animals and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. And he did! The woman with the issue of blood who touched Jesus' cloak – Jesus told her “daughter, your faith has healed, go in peace”. Immediately she was healed. Maybe we need to do something that's different to what we normally do. Say, “God, I'm acting in faith right now. I'm trusting in what you're going to do in my life. I just believe that you are going to meet me where I am”. An act of faith leads to an obedient action, which then creates something. Let us believe breakout happens when we activate faith and walk with God.

It's perhaps the most familiar story in all of Scripture -- the epic clash between David and Goliath. But there's a third character that we often leave out - King Saul. In today's episode, we'll continue through Paul's sermon series on the life of David, and today, Paul juxtaposes the personal identities of David and Saul and reveals how they radically affect the way they face the opposition of the Philistine warrior. If you've been enjoying The Paul Tripp Podcast, please leave us a review! Most of us remember the life of King David in the Old Testament but few of us have ever studied the life of King Saul. Just as the life of King David is an example to us of great leadership, the life of King Saul can be seen as an example of what I call “Anti-Leadership.” In 1 Samuel 18 and 19, this anti leadership is on full display. Saul is not only afraid to fight Goliath but gets jealous of David. And his fear and jealousy have a lot to teach us about our own leadership today.

DAVID vs GOLIATH - David El Dib by Oase Church
Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the Lord says to you: “Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God's (2 Chr 20:15).” These were the words of the Lord given to Jehoshaphat king of Judah against whom the vast army of the Moabites and the Ammonites had come to make war. In his desperation of not knowing what to do, Jehoshaphat had turned to the Lord, and prayed before the above words were spoken through Jahaziel a Levite. The Lord further said: You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you (v. 17). Here is the key for us as we face various problems in this world. Victory is already ours as the Bible says, but it is still necessary that we stand firm in this truth—the spiritual reality—in order to make it real in this world through our faith. The truth we need to stand upon is expressed above as “For the battle is not yours, but God’s,” or “You will not have to fight this battle.” Having stood upon these words, Jehoshaphat was able to face this vast army, and the result was not only a great victory over the vast army, but also a vast amount of plunder that it took three days for his army to take. It is worth noting that he was desperate at the beginning not knowing what to do, but he quickly came to have faith in God, and at the end, the victory was realized. Try to see how his desperation turned into his faith so that he let his men to sing, “Give thanks to the Lord, for his love endures forever.” Look at carefully how he prayed, and you will observe how the change from desperation to faith occurred (vv. 6-12). When you think, in your mind, that the problem you face is “your” own problem, you will fail. If the problem is yours, you will need to fight, and when you think you are the one who fights, you are not submitting your way to the Lord: you are merely tiring yourself with all kinds of carnal calculations and efforts. You, being in that condition, are actually fighting against God with unbelief and doubts. God works only through your obedience—your submission to him, his words and promises. Then, you might ask, “How can I think of my problem as not my problem, but God’s?” The answer to this question lies in Jehoshaphat’s prayer. And the same truth, you will learn from the story of David and Goliath. David said, in his conversation with king Saul: Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God (1 Sam 17:36). Note the way he called Goliath—“the uncircumcised Philistine.” Read further the words he spoke to Goliath: David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will hand you over to me, and I'll strike you down and cut off your head. … and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give all of you into our hands (vv. 45-47)."
