It might be to begin a conference, open a board meeting, before introducing a main speaker, at the start of a big meeting, and more. However, so many people completely blow the point of a devotion that I wanted to share these reminders of how to make it memorable.  How to make your speech memorable: 1. Start with scripture. Focus their mind on God. 2. Don't preach. Make it conversational. Share from your heart. 3. Open with a personal story to build a stronger connection with your audience - but keep it short. 4. This is not your chance to pitch your project or brilliant ideas! The devotional time isn't about you, it's about focusing the audience on God or the conference theme. 5. Respect the schedule. Keep to your given time frame. Practice with the clock! You may not be the keynote or main speaker, but being asked to give a short devotional is an honor. Do it well and people will remember you for the rest of their lives. And don't forget a “byline” – which is essentially a one-sentence description of you.  5) A short, well-written introduction: You can't always depend on a conference host or MC to write a good introduction for you, so don't take chances.  6) Your online and social media links: Conferences often publish your social media and website links in the program or put them on the video screen while you speak.   Don't wait until you get asked to speak to prepare these items! It may take a while to pull all of this together, so do it now, and you'll always be ready. Now What?Resilience is the ability to come back from failure. If you've failed or been rejected, these five steps can be the key to help you move past failure and on to success: 1. Don't overthink it. Don't get obsessed thinking about what you could have done better. 2. Don't take it personally. It's easier said than done, but learn to separate criticism of the project from criticism of you. 3. Find objective advice. Find another experienced person that you trust and run the project by them for a second opinion. 4. Ask for constructive criticism. At the moment of failure or rejection, keep a cool head and ask for constructive criticism. 5. Don't let failures derail your dream. It happens! Keep moving forward. Don't be afraid to fail, especially if you're expanding your tent poles. If you're breaking new ground or trying new things – that's not the time to be timid! That's the time to try things, and if you fail, learn from your failures and move on. Here's five tips to help you get invited to speak:  1. Volunteer at conferences. Find the conferences you think you might like to speak at in the future and show up to help. You never know what could happen. 2. Become an expert. Find a niche in your field and become an expert. What have you done in your career that is unique? 3. Plan ahead. Most conferences are planned out a year in advance. Don't wait until the last minute to reach out. (And always be ready for last-minute changes!) 4. You don't need an agent. Don't feel like you need an agent to get invitations. They may be able to negotiate a deal but may not be the one to get you the job as a speaker. 5. Take the time to become a great speaker. Being an expert does not necessarily mean you'll be a great speaker. If you're incorporating software like Powerpoint or Keynote, learn to speak well first; then bring the Powerpoint into it. Become an amazing speaker! Incorporating these active listening skills into your communication strategy can help you become the kind of person people are drawn to. It's the best way to get your ideas heard. 1. Learn to speak in shorter chunks. Then stop and let the other person respond! Don't dominate the conversation. Stick to the topic. Keep it short, keep it relevant. Almost always, less is more. 2. Don't dominate the conversation. Conversation is a two-way street.  3. Don't lecture. Nobody wants to be lectured to! 4. Ask about them. People want to share about themselves! Use people's names and take opportunities to express interest in their lives when it's appropriate to establish a rapport. 5. Learn to read other people. Be aware of the response or reaction of the others in the room and change your strategy if the moment calls for it. Active listening and good people skills are just as important—if not more—than the skills it takes to do your job. Obsessing with analytics Analytics can be important, but it's also important to consider content quality. What's the story you're trying to tell? What's your message and the audience you're trying to reach?   2. Using social media as a megaphone Are you having a one-way conversation? Social media is social! It's a two-way conversation.   3. Not knowing how to tell a story Do you know how to tell an engaging story? As a social media creator, take the time to learn how to tell effective stories to better engage your audience.   4. Playing it too safe There is such a thing as confrontational creativity! We need to be more provocative about what we're posting. Ask tough questions that force people to think differently. Learn how to push the envelope just a little bit!   5. Not having a real, genuine, authentic, and unique voice Cut through the “noise” by having a unique and authentic voice. The more you narrow your niche down, the bigger the audience you have a potential of reaching.   What you post on social media matters. Your voice can impact today's culture in positive ways.   For more about social media, read “Should Christians be Snarky on Social Media?” here: https://www.philcooke.com/should-christians-be-snarky-on-social-media/

The Protestants brought in Willian Hays, the US Postmaster General and Presbyterian elder to watch over the Hays' Code. In the early days of cinema, churches made more movies than Hollywood. Here's 4 reasons Hollywood has always been engaged with the Bible: 1. The power of the Bible stories. 2. Audience awareness. There's a shorthand with the audience when drawing from Christian bestsellers (with the Bible being number one). 3. Bible stories transcend culture. 4. Christian audience size. Mel Gibson's “The Passion of the Christ” helped prove how huge of an audience there is who take their faith seriously.   Tips for Aspiring Filmmakers (or those who want to make an impact in today's media-driven culture) 1. Listen to the voices of pop culture. Don't live in a bubble. 2. Recognize the opportunity. There are so many ways to step into the creative space as a Christian in Hollywood. 3. Be real. This generation wants authenticity. 4. Engage with today's culture, even when it's uncomfortable. 5. Be a patron. As a creative person or a leader – your ability to be resilient and keep going in the face of failure can equal success in the long run. Here's 5 tips to help you succeed.   Don't overthink the failure. Whether you're an actor who didn't get the role you auditioned for or a filmmaker whose pitch fell flat, you may never know what went wrong. Don't overthink it; move on. Don't take it personally. Try to separate the failure of your project from who you are as a person.   Get objective advice. Get a third-party objective with the maturity and professionalism that you can trust.   At the moment of rejection, keep a cool head. If possible, see if you can ask questions about what you could have done better. That information you acquire can help set you up for future success.   Don't let rejection or failure derail your dream. Your career is much bigger than any single project. You never know when tweaking a concept could work for something else.   Bonus tips! Should I have a day job? You would be in good company with the many famous creative people who have had day jobs.   Create a daily ritual around your work. Find a place, schedule a time and get to work.   Understand the power of your story. Your failure does not define you.   Gain a Better Perspective on Failure: https://www.philcooke.com/failure/

He has operated as an activist towards the healing of the human heart, and strives to work his compositions for this seminal purpose. He is the composer and conductor of the Curse of the Vampire Orchestra, and features theatrical statements for: orchestral, choir, electronica, and industrial percussion, set to the classic silent films—Nosferatu (1922) & The Kid (1921).    Philip has traveled the world extensively while performing his toy marionette theatre, The Suitcase Sideshow.  He has performed in orphanages, refugee camps, prisons, sidewalks, and other unconventional venues—where he has learned a wide understanding of art, culture, and the human condition, which has been a significant influence on his music.   Here's Philip Shorey's Inspirational Takeaways for Christian Artists: The church is for you and not against you as a creative. Don't wait. Start with what you have and where you are. God uses little things to do a lot. Get connected. You need camaraderie, connection, accountability as a creative. My greatest asset apart from the Holy Spirit is the fellowship I have with other artists... Find community. Experience other things that get your mind thinking in new directions, that expand your creativity and challenge your thinking. There's nothing I can do that is because of me; it's hundreds of miracles... it's all because of Jesus. If we get that, if we're not seeing a breakthrough then maybe we need to start fasting and praying. Anytime you see something in the Bible – something radical happen – it took a step of faith that was very uncomfortable! Be willing to get uncomfortable and lay your reputation on the line. Trust Jesus because he loves you more than anything and won't let you down.   Find out more about the Curse of the Vampire: Curseofthevampire.com Find out more about Philip Shorey and the Suitcase Side Show: https://suitcasesideshow.org Go behind the scenes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZXdHRLV8y8   Follow the Curse of the Vampire Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/curseofthevampireorchestra/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/curseofthevampireorchestra Twitter: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/philipshorey Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/4SfkNLRoawA8dgF3sbLUCA   (As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.
