Jess On The Mountain: Yoga, Chakras & Becoming Your Own Guru
Our first guest of Season 2 is a fellow Austin-based yoga professional whom I've known for many years and have a ton of respect for. Ana Pilar Cruz has been teaching yoga since 2001 and, in the modalities of Hatha, Hatha Flow, and Ashtanga Yoga, has been training yoga teachers since 2006 at both 200 and 500-hour levels in the United States and abroad. As the current Director of Yoga Therapy at My Vinyasa Practice, she excels in teaching pranayama, mantra, and yogic philosophy & literature. Ana Pilar expands her teaching beyond the mat by bringing the history, philosophy, and mythology of yoga to communities and conferences across the United States. She's here with us today to talk about Chakra Seven, how it is the gateway to the Divine, and how we can embody the Divine in our everyday lives. Our conversation begins with the stages of life and how we embody them through the lens of the chakra system. From there we move into the practice of seeing the Divine in yourself and others, and then discuss different conditions that can create blocks in the seventh chakra and examples of how that shows up in world events. We also talk about the importance of ritual in accessing the Divine, and how boundaries are important in creating sacred connections. Ana Pilar then shares how the way she was raised to simply be curious about religion and her own relationship with the Divine kept her mind and heart open. This is such a juicy conversation and I could have talked with her for hours! We will have to have her back again. Enjoy this episode, and may it inspire you with a few ways you can find and sustain your own connection to the Divine. Hi everyone, I hope you are all staying well! I offer you here a 30 minute yoga class for those times when you need to move and you need to calm down too! It's not always the right moment for lying still and resting, so if you have energy to burn and still crave that centred peace that yoga brings - this one's for you. We move through a dynamic sequence using the breathing ratio 1:2, which means your exhale is twice as long as your inhale. It's the magic ratio for triggering the physiological responses that bring about a state of calm and initiate a greater sense of wellbeing

Mindful New Year is not OPEN for enrollment! Sign up at http://www.mindfulnewyear.com and join us live to review 2020, plan 2021 and apply the best teachings of Yoga, Ayurveda & Vedic Astrology to your daily habits and new years intentions. Vata dosha represents all things to do with movement, change, irregularity, roughness and dryness - like the wind and air elements it represents. This dosha becomes dominant in the Fall season though can become dominant in any of us based on our lifestyle and diet choices. In excess you may experience anxiety, worry, fear, dry skin, cold limbs, trouble sleeping, digestive issues and overwhelm. Balanced you may experience creativity, inspiration, clarity, a sense of ease, lightness and flexibility in your day to day life. This class will teach you more about how to increase or decrease vata dosha in your yoga practice. As Ayurveda teaches anything can be a poison or a medicine and Vata dosha is just one of many variables we can work with in yoga and in our daily lives. For this episode, I sat down with J.Brown. J is a yoga teacher, writer, and podcaster. He is at the forefront of a quiet yoga revolution, based in healing, that seeks to change the dialogue and direction of yoga practice in the west. His writing has been featured in Yoga Therapy Today, the International Journal of Yoga Therapy, and across the yoga blogosphere. His podcast is internationally renowned for raising the level of conversation around the practice.MY 5 BIGGEST TAKE-AWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE:1- The point to do one-on-one is to adapt the practice to the needs of the students. In a group class, if you use simplicity and repetition in the sequence, students get to know what is coming and if you offer tools so students learn how to individualize the practice, you can as a teacher walk around, and help in a way that the group practice becomes closer to a personal, one-on-one practice. 2- Less is more. Simple breathing and simple movement can have huge impact. They teach you sustained attention, and that connects you to how you feel, it builds your awareness and clears your perception of what is happening in your life.3- Sometimes we need to do something, so we can stop doing, and find wonder, awe and harmony. In there lies healing. 4- When you decide that your practice is not about the poses, the practice becomes about the breath. "Attention to breath and body to that" instead of making the breath follow the movements. When you loose the breath, pull back on the movement. Use the breath as a stabilizer in the movement, and operate form a place of awareness. Let the breath be your boundary. 5- The relationships teacher-student is at the core of the practice. Depth of relationship is better on many levels than wider reach. QUESTIONS HE ANSWERED DURING THIS EPISODE:Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your yoga journey? How do you bring the main principals of a personal practice into a group practice? What's the value of self-practice in your opinion? What is yoga for you? What's your experience of yoga? What do you wish teachers and students alike would understand better about the breath? How can more gentle be more advanced? Why did you start the podcast? Is there any episode that were particularly impactful to you?SUBSCRIBE, RATE & REVIEW!DONATE OR BECOME AN EXCLUSIVE MEMBER TODAY.Thank you so much for listening and being part of our 61th episode! For this episode, I sat down with Bethany C. Meyers. Bethany is the founder of the online sensation, the be.come project, is a master instructor and entrepreneur with a message known for inclusivity and body-neutrality. Their unique approach to movement awakens clients in profound ways. Meyers’ voice stands apart in the fitness world as a leader in dismantling beauty standards. They are also a champion of the LGBTQ+ community.MY 5 BIGGEST TAKE-AWAY FROM THIS EPISODE:1- Language affects the way we move. Use your words to honor where your bodies is, connect to how you feel and choose what serves you best, what is right for your body. Shame and punishment do not yield long term results.2- Body neutrality is respecting our bodies no matters how you feel about it that day.3- Ask yourself why you need to comment on someone else's body appearance and how often you do it, why you do it and how it might impact them. You have no idea about what they are going through. 4- Gender is more complicated than genitalia : There is the gender that is assigned to you at birth from genitalia , so your body (note that there's as many inner sex people as red hair), there's your identity (how do you identify) and your social expression of it (how to you dress, present yourself to the world).5- The use of new pronouns needs practice. It's like learning a new language. It's not about being perfect but making the effort to attempt to use them. Try reading a book out-loud and changing the pronouns to they/them, or write sentences and read them out-loud. If you're talking and struggle use the person's first name instead. If you make a mistake, correct and move-on.QUESTIONS THEY ANSWERED DURING THIS EPISODE:How can we approach fitness and yoga with a body-neutral way of cuing? How do move away from using shame and punishment as motivation? What's the difference about body positivity and body neutrality for you? What has did you time/recovery from ED taught you about your body and influences the way you teach? How do we move the society needle on fat-fobia? What can we do as individuals? You describe yourself as “queer-poly-married-non-binary-they/them” and say that scares you, I’ll make it not. Let’s talk about it.What do we need to know about gender? What about gender congruence, choice, and trends?Do you have tips to help people use they/them pronouns?Anything else you want to add before we finish?SUBSCRIBE, RATE & REVIEW!DONATE OR BECOME AN EXCLUSIVE MEMBER TODAY.Thank you so much for listening and being part of our 60th episode! Take a moment today to sign the petition at justiceforbigfloyd.com As millions mourn and process the grief of generations of injustice, I will do my best to continue to share helpful, healing practices I have learned from yoga and related teachings. Personally I will continue to support black rights and police reform and listen to voices of people who are living through these challenges for how I may continue to best offer support. I have continued to come back to yoga and meditation for 14+ years now because it just works. These teachings have stood the test of time and countless ups and downs of history for 3000+ years, and I'm incredibly grateful that we have access to them today. Today's practice is continuing to share from the Yoga Sutra - the 2000 year old teachings of yoga - with the practice of bringing attention back inward to recenter and reconnect to whats most important to you, so that the actions you take in the rest of your day come from that place. I hope you find this helpful. Hatha Flow Yoga This root chakra qigong inspired hatha yoga flow class will release the energy of fear from your body. Through qigong and hatha yoga fusion poses, we are going to focus on releasing the energy of fear. Instead of going into analysis of fear or all the stories of fear we are going to stay with the energy of the fear and focus on moving it down through our root chakra, into the earth to be transformed and transmuted. With the global pandemic of covid-19 right now many of you have requested classes for the fear of the unknown, fear of uncertainty, grounding and inner alignment. When we can release the frenetic, unconscious, mindless, scattered energy that accompanies fear, we can find the grounding and centering energy that is always available to us in our root chakras and through the earth. This inner stability will balance us and bring us a sense of inner peace. May this class be an energetic purge and detox and provide a gathering of inner strength that may be of benefit to all beings at this time. Namaste, Melissa

The glutes are meant to be the strongest muscle in the body. For many of us, the reality of sitting for several hours a day has made the glutes weaker than we’d probably like them to be. Sitting also tends to put a lot of stress on the shoulders. This practice works to alleviate shoulder tension and strengthen the glutes. The central nervous system plays a huge role in what we’re doing in yoga practice. It can essentially be in two different modes: either sympathetic response (fight, flight and freeze) or parasympathetic response (rest and digest). In yoga we learn to regulate this system to be able to access both as needed. Hatha Flow is essentially a Vinyasa yoga practice with some longer holds in poses. ****** Start Your Yoga Practice with 7 days of free Gentle Yoga at http://www.quietmind.yoga/ --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/quietmindyoga/support
Today I sit down with Scout Chavers to talk about her experience growing up as a black woman in the South, her work in the yoga and birth worlds, as well as what spiritual communities are missing. Scout has matriarchal healing in her blood and comes from a family of strong cultured mothers who advocate and help other women. As a 29 year old with no children, Scout has decided to dedicate her time and ultimately her life to supporting women in all stages of their personal journeys including but not limited to: puberty, discovering sexuality, conceiving a child, pregnancy and postpartum. Embracing her personal practices of spirituality, ritual and tradition, Scout enjoys cultivating and connecting communities of women and people of color through teaching yoga, self care modalities, childbirth preparation and intimacy classes. She enjoys helping women get in touch with their divine identities and step in to their feminine power. Hello! I had to share this practice as I loved doing it myself. It's a 50 min Hatha Flow yoga class. Suitable for high beginners and intermediate students. It's all about finding buoyancy through the spine, suspension from the core and ease in the shoulders and hips. The intention is to help you move with strength, grace and ease both on and off the mat. Props - just a brick/ block (optional) and a mat. Enjoy! With gratitude, Morven info@yogabynature.org - your feedback is always welcome. www.yogabynature.org - find out about yoga teacher training for cancer, retreats and holidays with me, weekly classes and regular workshops.

This is my final class at Bristol City Yoga. After 8 years of teaching Friday evenings I am moving on, to concentrate my energies in Weston Super Mare where I now live. This class is focused on finding space and ease in backbends and twists, opening the shoulders and experiencing the might of the lungs in mindful movement. You will need a yoga belt/ dressing gown belt/ cord/ scarf or similar. We practice dhanurasana, locust, cobra, ardha matsyendrasana, shoulder stand (sarvangasana), a warrior sequence, prasarita padottanasana with a difference and all the usual suspects plus some fun made-up things. This class is not for total beginners! Contact me Morven Hamilton: info@yogabynature or check out the website: www.yogabynature.org

Dear All, This class was recorded at Bristol City Yoga at the Yogatrail on the 13th Sept. A wonderful all-day event where studios across Bristol offered free classes to one and all. I was delighted to be able to take part and offer a restorative class as the last class of the day. We were packed to the rafters at the BCY studio, and had to turn some people away, so here is your opportunity to do the class at home. This is a good introduction to restorative yoga, and can also serve as a doorway into meditation. The BCY restorative class is every Friday 6.45 - 7.45pm £8 drop in. For more information about the classes, courses and workshops at Bristol City Yoga, you can visit their website here. I also teach Hatha beginners and Hatha Flow on Thrusday and Friday at the studio. If you'd like more information about my classes, workshops and retreats, please visit www.bristolcommunityyoga.co.uk.

Dear All, Thanks for listening. This class is a fun and flowy class designed to ease up those outer thigh muscles and hamstrings, we also do some poses that help to release the psoas muscle (you feel that one in your side belly and the top of your thigh). prepare to sweat a bit with this one, it's fairly high energy with a relaxing warm up and a guided relaxation at the end. If you're not sure about any of the poses, drop me a line at communityyogabristol@gmail.com and I'll post a photo on the Facebook page for you. The Urban retreat is approaching! 30th August at Wildgoose Space in St Werburghs, Bristol. For more information click here. You can also visit www.bristolcommunityyoga.co.uk for more information about upcoming retreats with Yoga by Nature. Love to you, Morven x

Dear all, thanks for listening. The following is a good, all-round flow yoga practice - it'll be easier to follow for those with some prior experience of yoga so I suggest going to some classes with a teacher before trying this at home. I have a bit of a cold in this one so please bear with the funny voice and the occasional cough! You don't need anything fancy, just your beautiful self and your mat will do. Blankets and eye pillows are always good for relaxation. If you'd like to spend longer doing yoga with me then come along to our May retreat 2md - 5th May with Yoga by Nature, or come to Andalucia, Spain for a week 10th - 17th May. Find out more about that, and about classes and workshops around Bristol at www.bristolcommunityyoga.co.uk. If you have any questions or comments I would really love to hear from you - you can get me on communityyogabristol@gmail.com. And finally, if you like the class then pleeeeeasegive me a review on iTunes - it helps us little podcasty people so so much. Thank you, Morven

Hello and welcome! This is a Hatha Flow practice - a bit of a departure from the usual classes that I publish. It was recorded at the Monday night Arnos Vale Spielman Centre class in Bristol. It's suitable for Level 1 practitioners but it's a little more dynamic than the usual gentle yoga classes in this series. We flow through poses using the basic Sun Salutation as a basis for the practice. There's no audio introduction as I am in between recording devices at the moment and my attempts to convert files of recordings on my phone ended in nada. So you may be pleased to hear that you don't have to listen to me nattering at the beginning and you can go straight into the class! Spaces on the January 4th Urban Retreat are filling up, so if you are nearabouts Bristol and you fancy a day of yoga to get you reenergised and lithe for the new year then come along. It's at Wildgoose Space and you can read more about it here. If you fancy an even bigger boost into 2014 then come to Dahab, Egypt for a week of yoga, sunshine and desert. We'll be doing twice-daily yoga, sunning ourselves, exploring desert and beach and perusing the markets. A fascinating culture to discover whilst getting in shape for all that 2014 may bring. Read more... Enjoy your practice! Morven x
