A truly inspiring woman, Jo Moseley shares her journey with me about how finding a new type of movement played a pivotal role in changing her life direction and helped her overcome sadness. We discuss the catalysts that led her to embrace stand-up paddle boarding, including perimenopause and personal loss.  Jo talks about the paddleboarding challenges she set herself, including a coast-to-coast journey and fundraising efforts. She emphasises the transformative power of movement on mental health and finding joy in the small things, as well as the support she received from friends and family. In our conversation, Jo also shares her passion for beach cleans and the positive impact they have on the environment and personal well-being. She emphasizes the sense of agency and purpose that comes from making a difference, meeting others, and being part of a community.  Jo is a truly relatable person who set challenges to move herself forward and in so doing, made a hugely positive change in her life.  About this week's guest: Jo Moseley is a 59 year old single Mum of two grown up sons from in Yorkshire. After a difficult perimenopause that left her crying in supermarket aisles and the grief of losing her Mum, Jo rowed a million metres and marathon for Macmillan Cancer Support in her memory in 2014. In 2016 she started paddleboarding having injured her knee earlier that year. She knew immediately it was something very special and for the first time in months she “felt like a warrior not a worrier.”  Three years later Jo became the first woman to paddleboard 162 miles coast to coast fundraising and picking up litter.  A film about that challenge called Brave Enough - A Journey Home to Joy has been screened to a great reception online and at prestigious adventure festivals, which is available to rent or buy.  Her first book SUP Great Britain (as above) was published by Vertebrate Publishing in June 2022 and was the first GB guide dedicated to paddleboarding. It soon became a bestseller. As a result she was invited to write a book about paddleboarding in the Lake District which will be published in spring 2024.  Jo is currently setting herself a #FeelGoodJoy challenge to do a Headstand a Day until she's 60 - which will be December 2024!  Instagram www.instagram.com/@jomoseley Website www.jomoseley.com Email healthyhappyfifty@yahoo.com Book: ‘Stand-up Paddleboarding in Great Britain: Beautiful places to SUP in England, Scotland & Wales' - on Amazon or on Adventure Books More about your host, Wendy Wendy (49) founded Reclaim Movement after a running injury at 40 turned into 4 years of chronic pain. In her search for answers and to reclaim her own movement again she discovered natural movement. The philosophy of training real life practical movements to be able to keep using them as we age, coupled with the benefit of using strengthening and mobilising whole-body movement patterns that are underused in today's modern world made her realise she had found a way to move for life. Wendy's aim is to help people embrace a movement-rich life, at any age, to improve mobility, strength and confidence to keep moving well and doing the things they love for as long as they want.  MovNat Level 1 certified & Functional Range Conditioning certified, she coaches online group classes live & by replay in the Reclaim Movement membership as well as online and in-person private coaching in Oxford.  Find out more how Reclaim Movement: Website Instagram: @reclaim.movement YouTube Facebook FREE E-BOOK - 'Making the Ground your Friend for Life!'  NEWSLETTER: Sign up for the monthly(ish) newsletter, 'Just.Move' RECLAIM MOVEMENT MONTHLY OR ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP - FREE 7-DAY TRIAL : includes LIVE (& by replay) natural movement classes, all replays, mini movement videos, tutorials, community support, movement prompts, and regular motivation. 8 weeks ago our son was born. 1 week after the c section, I've illegally started running again. Listening to my body, starting slow and for me only short distances. What a feeling, the first postpartum run felt like freedom! So incredible, all the senses involved in that very basic run. Yoga work outs were possible 10 days after c section delivery. Starting at home, then PT, followed by group training. Gaining confidence with every day and every movement, reconnecting with my body and mind. Yoga work outs to bring back balance, strength, and grace. The longer you stay active during pregnancy, the shorter, and smoother the recovery. Headstand and forearm stand stood highest on the priority list. Yoga teacher Jenni Rawlings and Exercise Science professor Travis Pollen discuss the widely varying viewpoints on headstand and shoulder stand in the yoga world. On the one hand, these two inversions are often proclaimed to be the “king and queen of yoga poses” and are therefore treated as almost essential yoga poses. On the other hand, there's a growing belief in the yoga world that these two poses are inherently injurious and should not be taught in yoga classes.Jenni and Travis examine both of these extreme points of view (and everywhere in between!) using the helpful tool of movement science.Points of discussion include:What are the 3 most common yoga poses associated with injury, according to scientific research? How prevalent are yoga injuries in general, according to scientific research? How safe or unsafe is headstand? How delicate is the human neck with regard to being loaded? Can we and should we strengthen our neck in a direct, targeted way?Does practicing headstand increase blood flow to the brain? How safe or unsafe is shoulder stand? Is practicing shoulder stand on blankets safer than practicing shoulder stand flat on the floor?Does practicing shoulder stand reverse one's cervical curve?Does shoulder stand stimulate the thyroid gland?Do headstand and shoulder stand confer any specific benefits for those who practice them? Are there contraindications we should be aware of for practicing either of these poses?…And much more!Enjoy this engaging and eye-opening discussion for yoga, movement, and fitness geeks!Resources mentioned in this episode:Blog post: How Common Are Yoga Injuries? by Jari KarppinenResearch article: Headstand (Sirshasana) Does Not Increase the Blood Flow to the BrainResearch article: Intraocular Pressure Changes and Ocular Biometry during Sirsasana (Headstand Posture) in Yoga PractitionersStrength for Yoga Remote Group Training – ongoing, interactive monthly strength program for yogis created by Jenni & TravisTo find out more about Travis Pollen: website / InstagramMusic used with generous permission from Dischord A Cappella.

I designed this series of pop-up classes to feed the hungry, dedicated, yogi that wants to go DEEP & get a little weird! These 90 minutes classes will be very similar to the style of classes I teach on my retreats. You can expect depth, creativity, meditation, intelligent sequences, a peak pose or theme, a fire playlist, community, etc.. There will be hands on assists (if you consent), occasional partner work, playtime & 1:1 time with me to work on big transitions/poses, etc.. I created this series with the yoga teacher in mind and/or the dedicated yogi with a few years of experience under their belt. These classes are for the people that want to learn, grow & have some fun while doing it. These classes are not designed to be a fitness class - however you will get sweaty.   The Schedule: February 7th: Handstand themed class February 14th: Partner Yoga & Thai Yoga Massage (come with your lover or BFF) February 21st: Forearm themed class February 28th: Headstand themed class   _________________________________   Sakara Life is my FAV delicious & nutritious meal delivery service EVER. Sure, this will keep me not busy for a few days or more; and perhaps it is a good time to practice my headstands, to see the world from a different angle. Headstand Without Wall Support Hi Friends, PLEASE NOTE: This is a live tutorial if you find it challenging to follow, please visit my YouTube Channel to follow the Tutorial Video. https://youtu.be/iRMqkRHaRrQ Welcome to this video on headstand without wall support also known as tripod headstand. This video requires you to have experience with the headstand already. We take all the weight onto the head, so the neck needs to be already strong and ready to attempt this pose. We use the arms to support the balance and come onto the head. Please make sure you have checked all precautions and prohibitions before trying this posture. I would HIGHLY recommend doing my headstand for beginners tutorial video below before doing this headstand without wall support and arm/hand support. If you have any weakness in the neck, shoulders or arms, I would suggest trying my previous headstand video first to build strength. If your ready to try it then have fun!
