Recently in one of my Postnatal Yoga classes a mom shared about her experience as the only parent who could successfully soothe her baby to sleep. This was leaving her feeling incredibly burnt out and exhausted. Her sentiment was shared by many members of the community.  On this episode of Yoga|Birth| Babies I'm speaking with Sarah Skiles, pediatric sleep consultant, doula, and advanced newborn care specialist. Sarah's personal experience with spiraling health and postpartum mood disorders due to sleep deprivation is her driving force behind the passionate way she serves, supports, and guides new parents. Sally began her journey in the health and fitness industry in 1998 after qualifying as a personal trainer and gaining a bachelor in Sport Science in the year 2001. Soon after, she experienced a deep calling to explore a more holistic approach to movement and breath, which led to Sally certifying as a yoga and paranayama teacher, training with Paul Dallaghan and Sri Tiwari at @centered-yoga in Thailand, in addition to studying at K Pattabhi Jois The Ashtanga Yoga Institute in Mysore. From teaching her female students however, Sally could see that if yoga asana and pranayama was applied in a more bespoke manner with regards to the natural womb cycles that most women experience on a regular basis, the application of yoga could be even more profound. This led her to studying for several years in earnest with leader and pioneer in this field; Uma Dinsmore-Tuli, with whom she gained qualifications in Pregnancy and Postnatal Yoga and a Well Woman Yoga Therapy Diploma. Since then, Sally has gone on to train as a Doula with Michele O'Dent and a Pilates teacher with A.P.P.I. (Australian Pilates Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute) and has established her own yoga teacher training school The Sally Parkes Yoga Academy in 2010, training over 1500 yoga teachers to date. Michelle has a conversation with Stephanie Smith, E-RYT, PRYT regarding the benefits of yoga for pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and beyond in this special replay episode. Stephanie explains how yoga not only prepares the physical body for the stress and rigors of birth but the emotional body as well. She explains the connection between our breath and the reduction of the flight/flight stress response. Stephanie shares how her yoga practice helped her to set healthy boundaries with others during her pregnancy and keep a sense of ease and calm when her plans for her daughter's birth did not go as she had envisioned. Together, they discuss how yoga can prepare, protect, and enhance the healing of our pelvic floor during the childbearing year. She also shares the benefits of a Yoga Nidra practice, which is especially vital after the baby's birth as it invokes the relaxation response and turns on the parasympathetic nervous system—the rest and restore part of our nervous system.“That is what the beauty of that yoga practice is, that deeper connection within, where you can just feel the experience, there's no thinking at all that is required.”  — Stephanie SmithIf you enjoyed this interview,  and want to hear more from Stephanie please go to episode 86  and learn more about breath and meditation, please go to my series on Calm Birth episodes 76- 80. Stephanie's and my episode is number 86. So much of what we are told is a normal part of pregnancy and postpartum is not normal.  It is simply common and there is help for leaking urine, low back pain, painful sex, a weakened core, and a too tight or too weak pelvic floor.  Stephanie offers private virtual yoga classes, so please find her information here in the show notes to work with her no matter where you are listening to this podcast from in the world.  About Stephanie Smith, E-RYT, PRYT:Stephanie is an Orlando based Yoga Instructor specializing in Pre and Postnatal Yoga. Restore Your Core: Diastasis Recti and Pelvic Floor Talks

Before you begin your exercise routine, it is important that you have received medical clearance by your doctor to exercise, practice patience with yourself and your body, and rest, lots of rest! I recommend waiting at least 8 weeks before beginning any strenuous exercises. After your recovery, yoga can be a relaxing and beneficial way to begin introducing exercise back into your daily regimen. Yoga can aid in healing your abdominal muscles, building pelvic floor and core strength, improve body and organ alignment, and your mental health. As you begin adding specific yoga poses back into your daily routine, you may begin experiencing relief from diastasis recti, pelvic floor issues, tight shoulders, chest, and hips, and help you feel more energized and relaxed while caring for your new child. In this article we hope to address any questions or concerns you may have regarding postpartum exercise. How Soon After Giving Birth Can I Do Yoga? We recommend taking your time to heal and bond with your baby before you start exercising. So often women struggle with feeling a need to get back into their normal regimen and daily activities without allowing proper time for rest and recovery. This can be especially true of postpartum people who experienced no pregnancy complications or delivered naturally. As stated above, allowing 8 weeks or so to begin yoga practice is important for your health and overall well-being. Postpartum Yoga After Normal Delivery If you had a normal delivery, you may begin feeling like yourself much sooner than other women who experienced either a c-section or complications during their delivery. However, it is still important to rest and to begin gradually introducing yoga poses into your daily routine. Make sure that you feel comfortable during your exercises and if you experience any pain or discomfort, to wait a few more days to a week before returning to your yoga practice. When Can You Do Yoga After C-Section? If you delivered via c-section, it may take longer for you to begin feeling yourself again. That’s okay! You experienced a lot of trauma and pain during your delivery and it is important for you to rest. We especially recommend a 5-5-5 step program during the first few weeks of your recovery – 5 days of rest, 5 days within reach of your bed, and 5 days within a short distance from your bed. Talk with your doctor before beginning any exercises or yoga poses that may affect your abdominal muscles and belly. Can Yoga Help You Lose Weight After Pregnancy? Although losing weight should never be the top priority in returning to yoga postpartum, yoga can help you lose some of the baby weight you’ve gained during your pregnancy. There are many other benefits to contributing yoga into your postpartum regimen: Body knowledge: Yoga can help you become familiar with vital parts of your body as you begin the restoration process. Body / Posture Alignment: Your body has undergone a lot of physical stress during your pregnancy and after your delivery. Many women experience shoulder, neck, bain, back, and hip pain due to delivering, carrying, and breastfeeding their child. It is also common for your organs to be displaced during your delivery. Yoga can help restore your body’s alignment and help loosen those tight muscles in your shoulders and chest! Mental Health: Participating in a postpartum yoga program can help you get to know other people, participate in relaxing and calming practices, and reduce stress and postpartum depression. What is Postnatal Yoga? Postpartum yoga is a one postpartum practice you can start a few weeks after your delivery. Not only can yoga help relieve symptoms of diastasis recti and a weakened pelvic floor, but it can also be a great way to relax and gradually regain your strength during your recovery. Below we have compiled a few yoga poses we believe are beneficial in your early recovery.

She has been practicing yoga since 1990 when she was introduced to Integral Yoga as a Physical Education credit as a Freshman in university. After her studies she traveled and lived all over the world, maintaining her own yoga practice and learning from different traditions. The turning point for her was 13 years after her first yoga experience, in Paris studying Integral Yoga once again. This was the moment that her yoga journey moved beyond a physical practice to a deeper exploration of all branches of yoga and I began studying and practicing at Yogaville, Virginia the teachings of Swami Sachidananda. It was during her training as a Pre and Postnatal Yoga teacher with Uma Dinsmore-Tuli that she truly understood that yoga for women is not modifications of the traditional practice. Instead, the true power of women's yoga is guided by the wisdom and energy in the natural female cycle. Delving deeper into these practices she also trained with Uma in Well Woman Yoga Therapy. Her practice follows the wisdom of the hidden voices of traditional yoga, the Mahavidyas, the female wisdom goddesses, grounding them with a sound understanding of female anatomy, pelvic floor function, and hormone health to create a yoga practice that embraces a woman's natural, cyclical power and energy flow. She draw from what she has learned in her studies, including teachings of Tammy Lynn Kent and Alexandra Pope, and training with Francoise Freedman in Fertility Yoga, and Leslie Howard in Pelvic Floor Yoga. She also followed her dharma to create practices centered around Well Woman Yoga Therapy. After all these experiences, Sharon decided to create her own Pre & Post Natal Yoga Teacher Training with EFV Lab, thanks yo her friend Amanda Dates. "Perhaps most of all, my work is empowering women to support other women." It's important for her practice to continue to study all branches of yoga, and all things related to women's pelvic health. In this fourth episode, Michelle has a conversation with Stephanie Smith, E-RYT, PRYT regarding the benefits of yoga for pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and beyond. Stephanie explains how yoga not only prepares the physical body for the stress and rigors of birth, but the emotional body as well. She explains the connection between our breath and reduction of the flight/flight stress response. Stephanie shares how her yoga practice helped her to set healthy boundaries with others during her pregnancy and keep a sense of ease and calm when her plans for daughter's birth did not go as she had envisioned. We discuss how yoga can prepare, protect, and enhance the healing of our pelvic floor during the childbearing year. She also shares the benefits of a yoga nidra practice, which is especially vital after the baby's birth as it invokes the relaxation response and turns on the parasympathetic nervous system—the rest and restore part of our nervous system. “That is what the beauty of that yoga practice is, that deeper connection within, where you can just feel the experience, there's no thinking at all that is required.” — Stephanie Smith   About Stephanie Smith, E-RYT, PRYT: Stephanie is an Orlando based Yoga Instructor specializing in Pre and Postnatal Yoga. For our 32nd episode, I sat down with Jane Austin. Since Jane is San Francisco based pre and post natal yoga teacher, I’ve never personally taken class with her, but I’ve heard numbers of fellow teachers raving about her, her classes and her trainings. When I saw she was also leading workshops on the pelvic floor, I thought we could make a great episode that anybody could relate to, mom to be or not.5 BIGGEST TAKEAWAYS OF THIS EPISODE1. Yoga gives you an opportunity to shift form all the external chatter (from what people think you should be doing) to the internal experience. When you understand that what you're experiencing is true for you, you can learn how to trust yourself.2. When you listen to your own truth, you will make choices and decision for yourself (and your baby) that are going to be appropriate. And what's true for one women is not true for an other. You know your body better than anybody else.3. You don't HAVE to go to a class to practice yoga. Roll out your mat and just commit to doing any amount everyday. Rolling out your mat is a way to set an intention to do some self-care.4. Holding Mula Bandha for a long time without releasing can be very detrimental for your health.5. Embracing yourself and loving yourself is the first step to reconnect to your pelvic floor. Then, when we have a relationship to it, visualizing muscle function, will create more activation and more receptivity.QUESTIONS SHE ANSWERED DURING THE EPISODE : Can you tell us about yourself, your yoga journey, and why you chose to dedicate yourself to pre and post natal yoga. What are the needs of pregnant women when it comes to yoga? And what are the benefits they get out of it?How important is the power of the group and the community? Do you have tips for self-care for newer and not so new moms out there? For teachers that teach regular class that are listening, what are some ways they can hold space or be supportive to a pregnant or postpartum mom coming to their regular class? For teachers that are interested to train in pre and post natal but have reservations because they are not moms, have never been pregnant, what do you say to them? Why is it important for you to teach about the wonders of the pelvic floor? How does a strong pelvic floor helps us be more stable and more powerful? What’s the link between the pelvic floor and our nervous system? What’s the biggest obstacle when it comes to pelvic floor health? Do you have an example of movement or breath technique that can help listeners to get started with building more awareness or vitality to the part of that body?SUBSCRIBE, RATE & REVIEW!GIVEAWAY WINNER. Today I sit down with Scout Chavers to talk about her experience growing up as a black woman in the South, her work in the yoga and birth worlds, as well as what spiritual communities are missing. Scout has matriarchal healing in her blood and comes from a family of strong cultured mothers who advocate and help other women.
