Avant le Covid-19 et la guerre à Gaza, Bethléem accueillait deux millions de pèlerins chaque année. C'est la ville où la tradition chrétienne situe la naissance de Jésus-Christ. Pour la première fois depuis le 7-Octobre, la municipalité a prévu un timide retour à la normale pour les festivités de Noël. Au programme, il y a la messe de minuit et le marché de Noël dans ce territoire occupé par Israël. Le cessez-le-feu à Gaza redonne un peu d'espoir aux habitants qui attendent que les touristes reviennent. De notre envoyée spéciale à Bethléem, La fanfare des scouts palestiniens accompagne l'illumination du sapin géant sur la Place de la Mangeoire, devant la Basilique de la nativité. La saison de Noël est lancée à Bethléem, où les dernières années ont été difficiles. La pandémie du Covid-19, les massacres du 7-Octobre et la guerre à Gaza ont coupé net l'afflux des touristes. On observe désormais un timide retour. « On m'a dit que cet évènement n'avait pas pu avoir lieu ces deux dernières années à cause de la guerre. Personne ne pouvait venir ici. C'est émouvant, la guerre n'est pas terminée, mais on ressent un peu d'espoir en étant ici », affirme Liu, une touriste chinoise de passage. Pour atteindre Bethléem en Cisjordanie occupée, Jawal, Palestinien de Jérusalem, a dû patienter aux points de contrôle avec sa famille. Sa femme est chrétienne et il tenait absolument à être présent. « C'est tellement important de revenir à une vie normale après deux années de guerre. Cela envoie le message que les choses vont aller mieux, ça nous rend optimistes », confie-t-il. « Bethléem, c'est une ville de tourisme » Ces deux dernières années, la municipalité de Bethléem avait annulé les festivités par solidarité avec les Palestiniens de Gaza. Mais aujourd'hui, le marché de Noël est de retour dans une ville où 80 % de la population se déclare de confession musulmane. Comme Sahida, tout sourire : « Bethléem était comme endormie depuis deux ans avec la guerre à Gaza et là, c'est très important. On aime Bethléem, nous sommes Palestiniens et c'est la ville de nos racines. C'est une ville importante pour les trois religions : les musulmans, les chrétiens et les juifs. Bethléem, c'est une ville de tourisme, mais c'est important pour les gens, pas seulement pour l'économie ». Pourtant, le taux de chômage a explosé jusqu'à 60 % de la population. Avant, Hazim travaillait dans une agence de voyage qui a fermé. Désormais, le jeune homme aide un peu dans l'épicerie de son grand-père, près de la vieille ville. Il est très ému de témoigner : « Regardez-moi bien. Je suis jeune et j'ai l'air d'avoir 50 ans. Je suis vraiment fatigué de cette situation. Il faut que j'en parle sinon je vais exploser. Nous n'avons pas la possibilité de vivre notre vie normalement. Nous souffrons beaucoup, la situation est mauvaise, c'est pourquoi nous espérons que les touristes vont revenir. » Hazim ravale ses larmes. Ce chrétien orthodoxe célèbrera Noël début janvier.
