Their conversation ranges from convention to the sound of disillusionment to lyrical density, meta-musical gesture, vocal quality, and how you can tell if and when something is beyond saving.

In addition to producing and being a 4th mic on Chapo, Chris also acts as a cohost of the “Hell On“ limited series, as well as his own podcast he cohosts with his wife, And Introducing. We get into the past, present, and future of podding, from Chris pivoting to podding after falling victim to the pivot to video in the early 2010's at Slate, to his experience joining the 3-headed beast that is Chapo, to what lies ahead for both his “Hell On” series at Chapo and a new push to grow And Introducing.  Skip ahead to about 17:00 to get straight into the interview and skip the Boyz Only chat, but if you are interested, we get into Alex's week on the ranch, why Montanans hate Californians, and mourn the loss of Aaron Rodgers' achilles tendon.

Resisting gender-specific compliments in print since 2014 (and probably before), producer, songwriter, badass, and musician Neko Case unleashed her record, Hell-On, into the world in 2018. She's written songs that traverse a lot of ground: folk ballads, radio pop, rock anthems, a little bit of goth moodiness, honky-tonk piano, and swagger of all kinds. Her exceptional and distinct voice, “like garotting wire,” delivers wordplay of the highest o, rder on this gorgeous, daring, won't-be-a-supplicant-ever record. Neko Case brings her touring band to play some of these new tunes in-studio, (from the Archives, 2018.)  Neko Case is on tour in 2022 with her career-spanning retrospective album, Wild Creatures.

It's the Witch Wave Season 5 premiere! We are honored to have Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Neko Case join us.Neko's seven solo albums include her 2006 breakthrough album Fox Confessor Brings the Flood, and her two Grammy-nominated albums, Middle Cyclone of 2009 and 2013's The Worse Things Get, the Harder I Fight, the Harder I Fight, the More I Love You. Her most recent album, Hell-On, is a gorgeous sonic tapestry of such tumultuous topics as climate change, twisted fate, and heartache. In 2016 she also released a collaborative album with musicians k.d. lang and Laura Veirs called CASE/LANG/VEIRS. She is also a member of the critically-acclaimed band, The New Pornographers.Neko's music has been described as everything from country noir to art rock, but it transcends genre and soundscape. What is consistent are her signature brilliant lyrics which are full of sharp metaphors and enchanting mythological fragments, as well as her spectacular voice which cuts the air like a diamond. It's no wonder her career has spanned over twenty years - her songs are the stuff of legend.Neko also has a newly-launched Substack newsletter called Entering the Lung. In it she writes lyrical essays about her relationship to the natural world. On this episode, Neko discusses the influence of wildness on her music, her relationship to magical monstresses, and why she identifies as "she/sir."Pam also talks about Witches' Thanksgiving and answers a listener question about how to make physical exercise a spiritual act.Our sponsors for this episode are That Witch Life Podcast, Temperance Home and Bar, Lindsay Mack's “Heart of Service” course, BetterHelp, Seagrape Apothecary, The Spiral Bookcase, and Jessica Globe Coaching.

People have problems. It is normal, natural, and psychologically healthy - to have and process them.It is absurd to need them for Identity. It feels like the world is growing where everyone needs to have problems, have them recognized, and even goes to the extent of encouraging them. Like, if you don't have a problem and are not sharing it there is something wrong with you. It's a reinforcing cycle of weakness and inevitable downfall.Isn't there room to just be and accept what is. To be able to give some feedback to someone that they are being a pussy - to help snap them out of it and march on. Room for tough love and reality.Hey, tact isn't hiding what you need to say to compensate for your personal weakness and discomfort to say what needs to be said under the guise of making it more palatable to be heard by someone who is being weak. Too much tact and not enough holding accountable these days.Hell - "On your last day on earth, the person you became will meet the person you could have become." ~Anonymous"A Christmas Carol" ~Charles Dickenshttps://www.gutenberg.org/files/46/46-h/46-h.htm

Neko Case’s nearly 20-year career has been marked by some of the best songs of that time frame, chronicles of a country and world that often seem to be plunging into chaos but always manage to just avoid doing so. Her solo albums, including the brand new Hell-On, have been a major part of that, but so has her work as a vocalist with the indie-pop group the New Pornographers and as part of a trio of singer-songwriter superstars with K.D. Lang and Laura Veirs. Case’s songs don’t always provide easy explanations or answers. They’re about what it means to find yourself caught between what you need and what the world needs, or between the expectations others have of you and the expectations you carry for yourself.  Case joined Todd in the studio this week to talk about crafting her career across those nearly two decades, the notion of writing timeless songs in a world that keeps rushing forward, and the idea of building a place within the music industry where women can feel supported. Super-talented singer-songwriter Neko Case is not immune to self-doubt. In the years before becoming “an adult,” she tells us she had a complicated relationship with ambition.  “I wanted to be in a band and I wanted to play music, but I couldn’t have even told you that then,” Case said. “I wouldn’t have even thought that I was capable of that, even though I was completely obsessed and had been my whole life.” Her work has gone on to receive a lot of critical acclaim over her 30-plus years of making music. Her newest album is called Hell-On. She stopped by WBEZ to tell us how she maintains her sanity while touring and how she’s not superstitious — even though she learned her house burned down on the same day she recorded the vocals for a song called “Bad Luck.”

Built on the literal ashes of a recent personal tragedy (her Vermont home/studio burned to the ground) and bursting with love over the joy found in even the darkest parts of our lives, Case's latest is a potent reminder of how deeply honest art can change the world, one listen at a time. PLUS! Kingsley Flood is back with Neighbors & Strangers, there most poignant LP to date, and we're spinning a new single from it to help you fall in love with this raucous Boston/DC band all over again!Show NotesGet reacquainted with Kingsley Flood!Official Site | Facebook | Twitter | InstagramIncidental music courtesy of Aquatic Gardener.
