Connection After Loss with Liz Brenner

This episode didn't go as planned, and I'm grateful it didn't. I invited Liz Brenner on the podcast to talk about the Family Process article on the family systems roots of IFS she co-authored with Dick Schwartz and Carol Becker in 2023. Instead, we found ourselves talking about grief. A month before we recorded, my dad died unexpectedly. Liz lost her partner, Dan, in 2018, just six weeks after his cancer diagnosis. We both came into the conversation still processing our losses, and grief was the conversation we needed to have.  Takeaways Grief can break you, and it can also heal you. Both can be true at once A felt connection to someone who has died can be a real and ongoing relationship When the spiritual dimension of Self gets left out, the Self-to-part relationship can feel smaller than it actually is Constraint release, an idea from family systems therapy, asks what pattern isn't working rather than what's broken Meaning-making is an often-overlooked stage of grief A part that's afraid of losing connection to someone you love can be asked to step back (Liz learned that during a session with Dick Schwartz) Family systems theory shaped IFS more than we realize We'll have Liz back on to finish the conversation about the family systems article.  About Liz Brenner Liz Brenner, LICSW, is the director of Therapy Training Boston, the continuing legacy of the Family Institute of Cambridge. She is the primary instructor of their Intensive Certification Program in Couples and Family Therapy and co-author, with Richard Schwartz and Carol Becker, of the 2023 Family Process article on the development of the IFS model (email Liz for access to the article). My guest on today's episode is Achara Tarfa. She is a certified IFS practitioner, co-founder of the Global Trauma Institute, and director of the PATH program. We talk about finding IFS, what trauma coaching offers that therapy often doesn't, and why she and her co-founders built GTI to create the spaces they needed but couldn't find. Takeaways IFS gave Achara language for her own anger for the first time When the people you turn to for help fail you, the harm compounds. Achara experienced this firsthand and it shaped everything she built Trauma coaching isn't replacing therapy. It's reaching people the system has missed Healing isn't just individual. It's about dismantling the systems, cultural, institutional, hierarchical, that created the harm  PATH meetings use IFS to address addiction and its underlying trauma together AA teaches you how to survive; PATH teaches you how to live. If you're in protection mode, there's no room to feel. That's not a flaw, it's survival Catch my extended interview with Achara and our Audio Guides meditations over on Substack.  About Achara Achara Tarfa is a certified IFS practitioner, co-founder of the Global Trauma Institute, and director of the PATH program. Connect with her on Substack and Instagram. Parts and Perimenopause with Melissa Monahan — IFS for the Transition Nobody Warned Us About

I didn't know frozen shoulder was a perimenopause symptom. Neither did Melissa Monahan, this week's podcast guest, and she's a therapist living through it herself. This week Melissa joins me on the podcast to talk about the mental health side of perimenopause and menopause, and what IFS can offer women going through it. She's an IFS Level 2 therapist and host of Mindfully Meni, a podcast and Substack for women in this chapter of life -- and the people who love them. In this episode we talk about the changes happening in our inner worlds during this transition, and how IFS can help us make sense of and befriend parts whose burdens we may be noticing for the first time.  Takeaways Perimenopause is as much an identity transition as a physical one.  As estrogen drops, the manager parts lose their primary tool. Anger, anxiety, and old wounds may surface. Parts that were managed and exiled for years may now need additional care and compassion I share about my angry part around hot flashes, and what happened when I got curious instead of contemptuous.  Anger in women going through this transition is often the first time they've allowed themselves to feel it.  The polarization between shrinking completely and blowing everything up is a parts pattern, not a personality flaw.  Melissa went to PT for weeks for a frozen shoulder that kept getting worse. A surgeon finally told her it was common in women her age. Nobody had connected it to perimenopause. That's the gap she's trying to close. Community is not optional. It is medicine. Be sure to check out my extended interview with Melissa over on The One Inside on Substack   About Melissa Melissa Monahan is a licensed mental health counselor and IFS Level 2 therapist specializing in perimenopause and menopause. She integrates IFS, EMDR, and Brainspotting to support women through the hormonal and emotional dimensions of this transition, with a focus on the mental health conversation perimenopause deserves. On today's episode I welcome Jessica Tomich Sorci to the podcast. She's a therapist, perinatal mental health specialist, and creator of the Mom Parts Method. She's spent 15 years working with moms and noticed the same parts showing up, so she began naming them, then created a methodology and a new book. Her Mom Parts Method is a five-step IFS-based process specifically for mothers. It starts with a meditation to connect with a triggering experience, then moves through naming which parts showed up, speaking truths on their behalf, noticing underlying shame or grief, and identifying what those parts actually need. She identified 29 mom parts that kept appearing across 15 years of practice--things like anger, resentment, anxiety, destroyer, blame--and named them so moms could recognize themselves without feeling alone in it. Her Mom Parts cards are a physical tool to support the process. Takeaways The parts that make us such attuned mothers are the same parts that make it hard to let go as kids grow Grief is a through line in motherhood, from the 12-month clothes replacing the 6-month ones all the way to high school graduation. We don't talk about it enough. The good mom/bad mom flip is parts thinking, not Self. It's black and white, and it's exhausting. Motherhood is as much your developmental journey as your child's. You have every right to grow, struggle, fail, and try again too Twenty percent of moms are diagnosed with a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder. Jessica's take: that's a cultural failure rate "I've never heard anyone say they're screwed up because their mom took such good care of herself" Team Kid and Team What About Mom are both in your system. Both are trying to help. Catch my extended interview with Jessica over on Substack. And while you're there, be sure to try one of our new Audio Guides meditations. About Jessica Jessica Tomich Sorci, LMFT is a Level 3 Certified Internal Family Systems Therapist, Certified Perinatal Mental Health Professional, and creator of the groundbreaking Mothercentered approach. She developed the innovative Mom Parts Method—a revolutionary application of IFS to motherhood that helps moms transform guilt, anxiety, and anger into self-compassion and confidence. Jessica's book When Good Moms Feel Bad: An Empowering Guide for Transforming Guilt, Anxiety and Anger into Compassion, Confidence and Connectedness presents her paradigm-shifting vision that reframes maternal mental health struggles not as disorders, but as natural responses to the profound transformation of matrescence, in a world that provides insufficient support. Through her training programs, she empowers therapists to understand mothers through a non-pathologizing lens that normalizes the full spectrum of maternal experience while accessing every mom's own Inner Mom wisdom. She's also someone who lost her father suddenly seven years ago and rebuilt her practice and her inner life from the ground up. Takeaways Grief doesn't disappear. Avoided, it piles up. You can negotiate with parts about how much grief feels manageable Every grief is different, and every system responds differently to the same loss Legacy burdens shape how we grieve Faith can support grief or be used to bypass it Parts that yearn for a person who's gone can be met by Self Avoiding grief work is felt as another abandonment for our parts The Book Grieving Wholeheartedly: Bringing Healing for Every Part of Your Soul  Find Audrey Instagram & Facebook: @DrAudreyD, Substack and website  About The One Inside I started this podcast to help spread IFS out into the world and make the model more accessible to everyone. People feel it Self-led action includes courage, clarity, and the ability to see danger clearly, not just softness and compassion Parts-led activism burns you out and widens division. Today I welcome to the podcast Drs. Risa Adams, Robin Beardsley, and Elizabeth Parsons. They are family physicians turned psychotherapists who came together during the pandemic to write, find community, and speak for their parts. What they found in that process and wrote about in their new book, It Doesn't Have To Be This Way: A Physician's Guide To Radical Self Care (by three physicians who've been there), is something most caregivers, doctors, healthcare workers, therapists, parents, partners, anyone who finds their worth in being needed, will recognize. In This Episode The parts that helped you survive by taking care of everyone else Why fear and shame rarely get spoken out loud in medicine, or anywhere caregiving happens What finally broke each of them, and what helped Writing as a way to let parts be witnessed for the first time Why belonging and helping got tangled together so early Takeaways Helper parts learned that helping was the price of belonging The parts that make you good at caring for others are often the same parts driving burnout Burnout is a signal that the strategy has run out of space Being witnessed by people who get it can reach parts that have never been spoken out loud The culture around caregiving, in medicine and elsewhere, rewards the helper and punishes the one who needs This episode is for anyone who has ever made themselves smaller so there would be room to help. She is a Certified IFS Therapist, Approved Clinical Consultant and Trainer with the IFS Institute. Through her own travels with mental health she has come to appreciate the complexity of being a human while being a physician, with a special interest in intergenerational trauma. Risa lives in Elora, Ontario, with her partner and two children, and hopes to help bring IFS to doctors, patients and her own communities. Robin Beardsley, MD, FCFP, a Family Physician with over 35 years' experience of comprehensive family medicine practice and psychotherapy with a focus on care for the caregiver. She also works with learners, as a faculty member of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Ottawa, and teaches Self Compassion for Health Care Communities. These experiences of working with and healing from empathic distress in medical communities with IFS and Self-Compassion, along with her own journey of being a caregiver, personally and professionally, has given her a greater understanding of the complexity and multiplicity of our systems. She lives in Ottawa, Ontario with her husband and adult children nearby.   Elizabeth Parsons, MD, FCFP, has been a physician for over 25 years, practicing psychotherapy since 2007. She is a Certified IFS therapist and an Approved Clinical Consultant with the IFS Institute. In addition to IFS, Elizabeth is trained in trauma therapy and has been facilitating psychotherapy groups since 2010. Her interest in physician well being goes back to residency, when she surveyed medical residents on their coping strategies. She has been closely involved with the Medical Psychotherapy Association Canada since 2007, launching a self-care retreat for physicians that has run annually since 2012. Elizabeth lives in Ottawa, Ontario, with her husband and 3 children. About The One Inside I started this podcast to help spread IFS out into the world and make the model more accessible to everyone. Today I welcome Irina Diyankova back to the podcast. Her last episode,  Is It Trauma or Neurodivergence?  was one of our most popular.  This time we explore what happens when "going inside" during an IFS session becomes hard for clients. She finds this is especially true with neurodivergent and C-PTSD clients.  Irina shares why externalization can be so helpful in these cases. Instead of relying only on what's happening internally, bringing things outside, like mapping, speaking out loud, connecting visually or relationally, really help. We also talk about how IFS isn't a cookie-cutter model. We all respond differently, and part of the work is noticing what helps you stay engaged and attuned to a particular client's system. One of my favorite segments was hearing her talk about building community inside with part-to-part relationships. This is where we help parts notice each other, listen, and begin to relate differently. These part-to-part connections are just as important in the healing process as Self-to-part. We also talk about slowing things down in session, and how that's a small-but-critical opportunity for healing. Saying, "what you just said is important," or "tell me more about that." For many people, that kind of attention wasn't there growing up. It can feel unfamiliar, and also really supportive. Later in the conversation, Irina shares about her experience with cancer, being in remission, and what it's been like to be with her system in the process. She talks about holding different parts at the same time, and relating to cancer not as something to fight, but something to understand. Don't miss my short extended interview with Irina over on Substack, where she shares what's giving her hope lately.  Takeaways from this episode: • Externalizing can make parts work more accessible when staying inside feels hard • IFS isn't one-size-fits-all; adjust based on what you need • Slowing down and naming something as important can help people feel seen • "Community inside" means parts noticing and relating to each other • When Self isn't available, part-to-part connection still helps • Orienting parts to the present can reduce overwhelm • What helps you stay engaged when going inside feels hard? On today's episode, I talk with Joanna Curry-Sartori, founder of the Self-Leadership Collaborative and author of The Self-Led Educator. We explore this idea of how to bring IFS into everyday life, to invite more Self Energy into our conversations and interactions.  Joanna teaches us her PAUSE model, a five-step process to help you slow things down and notice what's happening inside before you respond. Sometimes it's in moments where you can feel yourself starting to react, or a conversation begins to shift. Instead of pushing through, you pause, get curious about your parts, and then return to the interaction. In This Episode We Talk About: • How to bring IFS into everyday moments • PAUSE as a way to slow down and notice what's happening inside • Using IFS in relationships, parenting, and classrooms • How to stay with your parts instead of reacting • What do you notice in yourself right before you react? • What can change when you turn inward first About Joanna Curry-Sartori Joanna Curry-Sartori, LMFT, is the Founder and President of the Self-Leadership Collaborative. She leads work focused on bringing Internal Family Systems into everyday life—at home, at work, in schools, and in communities. With over twenty years of experience working with young people, educators, parents, and community leaders, her work centers on helping people access and live from Self leadership together. On today's episode I welcome Nitsan Joy Gordon, a dance movement therapist, IFS practitioner, and peacebuilder who lives in Israel. Nitsan shares about growing up in Israel, living near the border, and what it's like to live in a place where war and trauma have been part of daily life for generations. She also tells the story of how Internal Family Systems changed her own life. A powerful experience at Esalen with Dick Schwartz inspired her to use IFS in her work back home. Nitsan leads Together Beyond Words, an organization bringing Israelis and Palestinians together to transform pain through deep listening and connection. Her work is guided by the belief that pain that is not transformed is transmitted. After the attacks of October 7 and the immense grief and trauma that followed, Nitsan realized the need for healing had grown beyond what her organization had been doing. Today nearly 80 volunteers are offering ongoing support, and dozens of groups have been created where Israelis and Palestinians can process trauma, grief, and fear together. As you listen, I invite you to notice your own parts. What comes up for you as you hear these stories? What do you feel in your body? For me, this conversation was a reminder of the power of curiosity, one-on-one connection, and the courage it takes to stay present and open in our divided world. In This Episode We Talk About: • What it's like living in Israel today. • Nitsan's organization Together Beyond Words, which brings Israelis and Palestinians together to transform pain through shared healing. • The idea that "pain that is not transformed is transmitted." • A powerful IFS session she had with Dick Schwartz. • How the events of October 7 changed her work. • Why people need separate spaces to grieve before they can reunite. • When she realized the level of trauma requires an "army of healers." • How the Healing for Peace initiative grew from a handful of volunteers to nearly 80. • Why facilitators working in conflict zones are learning IFS tools like unblending and working with polarizations. About Nitsan Joy Gordon Nitsan Joy Gordon is a Dance/Movement Therapist, IFS therapist, and peacebuilder who has been working in Israel/Palestine for over three decades. Her work lives at the meeting point of movement, deep listening, and compassionate presence, creating spaces where pain shaped by conflict can be felt, witnessed, and transformed. She is the author of Together Beyond Words: Women on a Quest for Peace in the Middle East and the initiator of Army of Healers, an offering of safe spaces to feel and heal across deep divides. Learn more at: Together Beyond Words. On today's episode I welcome psychotherapist and author Meg Josephson to the podcast. Her book Are You Mad at Me? names something so many of us feel but rarely say out loud: Did I do something wrong? Are you mad at me? Meg and I talk about the fawn response, people-pleasing, and the parts of us that learned early on to stay ahead of conflict. We explore how "being nice" can disconnect us from ourselves, why grief and anger are essential to healing, and how mindfulness helps us slow down enough to notice what's really happening inside. If you've ever swallowed your needs to keep the peace, felt resentful after saying yes, or worried that one mistake could cost you connection, our conversation will resonate. We Explore: • Why "Are you mad at me?" isn't really a question, but a feeling. • The difference between being nice and being compassionate. • How grief challenges the hope that if we try harder, we'll finally be seen. • Small corrective experiences that help our parts learn we're actually safe. Here's a link to the workshop she mentioned in the episode. About Meg Josephson Meg Josephson, LCSW, is a licensed psychotherapist and the author of the New York Times bestselling book Are You Mad at Me?, which has been translated into over 20 languages. They joined me to share their beautiful, messy love story. We dive into the courage it takes to start over, the "trauma" of the dating apps, and how they've used Internal Family Systems (IFS) and psychedelics to navigate the "breakups, breakdowns, and breakthroughs" of their relationship . We discuss: Starting relationships with truth instead of performance. Radical transparency — "starting with the ending" — as a foundation for trust. Why telling the truth early can save a relationship later. Loving someone while still grieving a past life. Speaking for parts instead of from them in moments of conflict. Finding the courage to try again after loss and heartbreak. Dating is messy: Getting honest about the "thrift store shopping" energy of dating apps. The difference between loving someone and being "in love." IFS as "four-wheel drive": Turning toward the model when relationships get stuck. How psychedelic-assisted journeys helped unlock grief — and create space to love again. Extended Interview At the end of our chat, I asked them each for one piece of advice for couples. If you're looking for a way to stay connected to yourself in a chaotic world, this episode is a sacred reminder that your essence is always already okay. We Explore: Why David looks for the unbridled aliveness in every person he meets. Reimagining our parts as refractions of a primal, divine intelligence. Today's episode is a little different, in a really wonderful way. I sit down with Dick Schwartz and Jeanne Catanzaro, President and Vice President of the IFS Institute, and partners in both leadership and life. This isn't a traditional interview; it's more like listening in on friends and colleagues talking about the things they care about, the serious, the personal, and the very human. I've been feeling curious about what's happening inside IFS leadership right now. The model keeps growing, reaching more people, and carrying more responsibility with it. I wanted to hear directly from Dick and Jeanne about what that growth and momentum have been like for them, not just in terms of roles and plans, but personally and as partners. In this candid conversation, we explore questions many of you have been holding. What happens as the Institute grows? Is Dick going to retire? What does transition even look like? We talk about all of that, but in a funny, sometimes ridiculous, and very real way. What I hope you hear is the care, thoughtfulness, and humanity behind the scenes of both the IFS Institute and the IFS model. We talk about: Jeanne stepping into leadership and visibility over time What it means to steward a model that's bigger than any one person Succession, responsibility, and caring for the future of IFS Collaboration and "sharing the stage" Knowing when to take a break from "parts talk" Bringing IFS beyond the therapy room and into the wider world Holding research, spirituality, and accessibility at the same time Finding balance between work, partnership, family, and rest Favorite shows, hobbies, and Firefighter behaviors There's a lot of warmth here, some laughter, a little potty talk, and plenty of insight. In this episode I talk with Anna Christine "AC" Seiple about slowing down, embodiment, and what it means to listen to our bodies and our parts.  AC is a licensed counselor and the author of The Sacred Art of Slowing Down. She lives in St. Andrews, Scotland, where she's working on her PhD exploring the intersection of ancient contemplative practices and modern mindfulness.  She shares why she felt called to write her book, how slowing down was not something she chose at first but something life required of her, and how chronic pain, illness, and unexpected disruptions shaped her relationship with her body. She talks honestly about what it's like to move from living primarily in the head, to slowly rebuilding trust with the body. Takeaways from this episode: • why slowing down often happens through life events rather than choice • how disconnection from the body can begin as a survival strategy • the role of self compassion and curiosity when parts resist slowing down • how faith, culture, and early messages can shape our relationship with our bodies • the importance of establishing safety before forcing embodiment • how slowing down and embodiment support parts that have been neglected • what it means to build new "muscle memory" with our nervous systems and parts • how seasons, light, and cycles mirror internal emotional rhythms I loved how she normalized how hard this work can be, and how she reminded us that slowing down does not mean changing who we are or stopping our lives. This conversation felt especially timely as the year winds down, a time when slowing down can feel counterintuitive. We continue part of this conversation in an extended interview for our paid community over on Substack, where we talk more about hope, seasons, and what it looks like to live with greater acceptance of where we are. About Anna Christine Seipel Anna Christine ("AC") is a licensed counselor, retreat leader, and researcher. She loves cultivating healing spaces that honor the entirety of our embodied beings. She holds two master's degrees, one in clinical mental health counseling and a second in ancient languages and is currently working on a PhD at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, exploring conversations between ancient contemplative practices and mindfulness interventions. Kendhal is the author of Treating Trauma with EMDR and IFS, a new book that offers clinicians a practical and compassionate guide to integrating the two models. She shares openly about her recent autism diagnosis and how her neurodifferences shapes the way she understands, lives, and teaches Internal Family Systems. In this episode I talk with Ronda Bonfanti, an IFS client, memoirist, and self-described "IFS cheerleader," who reached out to me earlier this year to share her beautiful memoir, Talk to the Trees: From CPTSD to Loving Me. Ronda has been on a healing journey for more than 25 years. She's done "all the therapies," read over 250 self-help books, and spent years trying to understand why she felt so broken inside, even though her life looked beautiful on the outside. When she found IFS, something finally clicked. We explore: Her early years in therapy and why CBT helped a little but never stuck How discovering IFS gave her a whole new relationship with her inner world Writing her memoir with the support of Frank Anderson and Lissa Rankin The healing power of humor and why she sees it as medicine Journaling as a doorway into parts work What it means to write a letter to shame  Loneliness on the healing path, and her longing to build IFS-aligned community Her dream to combine IFS and pickleball  She also reads one of my favorite chapters from her memoir — a hilarious, moving piece about her early days in therapy, banana splits, and her first meeting with Dr. Frank Anderson.  Ronda is one of those guests who reminds me why we do this work. Max's new book, Internal Family Systems Therapy for Gay and Queer Men: A Companion for After Coming Out, launched the morning we recorded this conversation. His work centers on attachment, attunement, cultural burdens, and the relational impact of trauma — especially for gay and queer men who are still healing the parts shaped by growing up without safety, guidance, or representation. We talk about why this book matters, the parts that continue to carry burden even after coming out, and the places where Queer identity, family dynamics, and IFS meet.  "Unburdening offers an opportunity to reclaim a personal embodied sense of spirituality, one that honors our inherent worth and belonging." Max shares his own story of growing up without language for his identity, the isolation he felt as a teen, and how those experiences shaped his clinical work. He describes a part he calls "teen without guidance," and the insight that came from recognizing how much that part still needed care. Together, we explore: What coming out doesn't automatically heal The "teen without guidance" part and why it matters How cultural, religious, and family burdens live in the system The longing for belonging and its impact on relationships How IFS helps gay and queer men reclaim sexuality, connection, and choice The role of community, experimentation, and attunement in healing The challenge of navigating adulthood with fewer developmental and relational experiences than many same-aged peers received  Be sure to check out Max's blog that I keep hearing so much about.  And don't miss my extended interview with Max over on Substack for paid subscribers.  About Max Littman Max Littman is an IFS therapist, consultant, and writer based in Oakland. How can Internal Family Systems help us prepare for, experience, and integrate psychedelic journeys in a truly Self-led way? And what if Self itself can be the journey, without medicine at all? In this episode, I talk with Nick Brüss, an IFS practitioner and licensed marriage and family therapist who specializes in psychedelic-assisted therapy. What I loved about this conversation is how grounded and humble Nick is about the work. He reminds us that psychedelics can open the door, but Self is what does the healing.  Why listen: Many people are curious about how psychedelics and IFS intersect. This conversation goes deeper into integration, humility, and what it really means to let Self lead before, during, and after expanded states. In this conversation, we explore: How IFS can guide and ground psychedelic experiences through Self Energy Why integration, not the journey itself, is where true healing happens How to meet expanded states with curiosity, consent, and care for all parts How to partner with the medicine to turn toward what needs our attention, bringing the same kind of compassion and curiosity we bring to our parts The nervous system and trauma dynamics that often surface after psychedelic experiences How Self can open the same sense of connection and wonder that psychedelics reveal The risks of spiritual bypass and how to stay Self-led  What an ethical, Self-led approach to psychedelic healing looks like Favorite Quotes: “The real question is, are we partnering with the medicine, or are we giving it all the power?” — Nick Brüss “Psychedelics don't heal anyone. What heals is the relationship with Self.” — Nick Brüss Connect with Nick at www.apracticeoffreedom.com Episode Sponsor Pisgah Coaching Institute: Founded by IFS-trained master coach Brian Jaudon, a pioneer in the integration of IFS and coaching for more than two decades. In true synchronicity, we somehow kept signing up for the same seminars—without ever comparing notes beforehand. We talk about our parts, our paths, and maybe a touch of destiny. Tammy opens up about what it's like to be an “IFS celebrity” (yes, we said it!) and the part of her that found it difficult to fully surrender as a participant in sessions while being so publicly known in the community. I share about my socially anxious parts and how they showed up throughout the conference, and together we explore how our systems reacted to the intensity, the beauty, and the vulnerability of being surrounded by hundreds of other parts and protectors in one big IFS field. I also share some clairvoyant messages that came through for both of us — intuitive nudges about healing, alignment, and the unexpected ways our friendship continues to unfold inside and outside the IFS community. This episode is a blend of reflection, laughter, emotional honesty, and gentle self-discovery — just what you'd expect from two friends who speak IFS fluently and love exploring the edges between psychology and soul.   What We Talk About How we kept accidentally attending all the same IFS conference seminars Tammy's experience of being an “IFS celebrity” and the protector that kept her from full vulnerability as a participant My socially anxious parts and how they showed up in crowded conference spaces The parts of us that got activated during the conference — and how we worked with them Our individual experiences as presenters Tammy's real-time vulnerability: sharing about her romantic breakup in her presentation and how her system responded Clairvoyant messages and intuitive insights that came through for both of us Takeaways, integration, and how the IFS model continues to deepen our friendships and inner awareness   About Tammy Sollenberger Tammy Sollenberger is an author, podcaster, and psychotherapist. We discuss: What I discovered about numbness, embodiment, and grief this past year Numb parts are “invisible protectors” and why simply naming the numb matters The compounding opportunity costs of numbing and what we miss when we spend too much time checked out The grief of emerging from numbness How numbness shows up across generations and cultures The NUMB framework we created for reconnecting with Self I keep returning to this slide from our deck: Our protectors think they're saving our lives, but sometimes they're quietly stealing our vitality. I love how he's using IFS to help people with conflict. We talk about how IFS has shifted his focus from getting people to settle, to helping them make Self-led choices. We discuss: How does a lawyer and mediator bring the language of parts into a legal setting? What is the "reasonable reason" behind "unreasonable behavior" in conflict? How can we make decisions from a place of "Self-led" wisdom rather than from our "gladiator parts?" How can simply naming a part change the dynamic of a conversation? David shares an example of how saying "there's a greedy part" shifted a negotiation for the better. How does the IFS model help us understand ambivalence and the "negotiation within" that happens before we even enter a conflict? Can the concept of "Self Energy" connect with notions of divine presence? How does the idea of God resonate differently for various people and their inner parts? How can IFS be a deeply spiritual path without becoming dogmatic? What do we do when belief itself feels like a burden or triggers our inner system? Favorite Quotes: “When people bring in a spiritual experience or a spiritual concept, I don't want to assume that I know what that means for them.” —Bob Falconer “Sometimes in spiritual direction, a part is the one that's praying. And that prayer needs to be honored and held and heard.” —Chelsea Odhner Find their book here: Opening the Inner World  Episode Sponsor: This episode is sponsored by Pisgah Coaching Institute. We explore what manifestation really means through an IFS lens, how subconscious parts shape our experience, and why “feeling good” is a nervous system state we can track and train. Our conversation explores how IFS intersects with manifestation, nervous system states, and the beliefs our parts hold about what's possible. Key takeaways: How parts influence what we manifest Self Energy as a measurable frequency Why some protectors are allergic to “feeling good” How neurofeedback can support deeper IFS work Shifting vibration is getting curious about what's happening inside Michael is the founder of UpSpiral.Life, a program and community that helps people move from burnout and disconnection into greater flow, purpose, and alignment. In this week's episode, I sit down with my friend Julie Honeycutt, a licensed professional counselor, certified IFS therapist, and approved clinical consultant. Julie has been integrating faith and counseling for over 20 years, and in this conversation, we explore how our attachment styles, parts, Enneagram, and developmental stages all shape our prayer life and spiritual connection. Julie shares that our attachment patterns and spiritual experiences are deeply linked, and how IFS offers a pathway to spirituality and how our different parts, even those with doubts We explore the idea that prayer doesn't have to look a certain way. It can show up in movement, in gardening, in painting, or even in those “texting prayers” we send up throughout the day. As Julie says, “What would it be like if our prayer life could reflect the unique way that God made us?” Julie also introduces the idea of the “levels of faith” and how parts of us may sit at different levels. Some of our parts may still hold early beliefs that we've outgrown, but they are still worthy of attention and care.  We talk about: How our parts have different attachment styles in prayer Why anxious parts often get exiled in spirituality The connection between the Enneagram, personality, and prayer How our developmental stage impacts how we experience faith Why meeting ourselves in our prayer life without shame changes everything How gardening and movement can be a spiritual practice Julie reminds us that all parts are welcome: “Even that part is welcome.” About Julie: Julie Honeycutt is a licensed professional counselor, certified IFS therapist for over 15 years and an Approved Clinical Consultant for the IFS Institute. She's been practicing the integration of faith and counseling for over 20 years in her private practice as well as in workshops and retreats. On this week's episode I'm thrilled to have my friend and colleague, Dave Adamusko, join me to demystify "direct access"—a powerful technique that allows IFS practitioners to speak directly to a client's parts. Dave and I dive deep into why direct access is so essential, especially for clients with trauma histories or deeply blended parts who might struggle with more traditional "insight" methods. Dave leads me in a brief session to demonstrate explicit direct access, engaging with a part of me that was feeling annoyed and ignored, and we trace its origins back to a childhood experience. It was such a profound experience! In this episode, you'll discover: What "direct access" truly means, both for clinicians and for those of us simply navigating our inner worlds. How direct access facilitates quick unblending, befriending, and the gathering of powerful insights. Why practicing direct access, even with "easier" clients, is crucial for mastery (and something I'm always working on myself!). The fascinating connection between direct access and other experiential techniques like Gestalt empty chair and psychodrama. The important distinction between explicit and implicit direct access. And be sure to check out my extended interview with Dave exclusively on Substack.   About Dave Adamusko: Dave Adamusko, LMFT is a Certified Internal Family Systems Therapist, and approved IFS Consultant with a private practice in Mesa, AZ. He has been involved in the IFS community since 2015 and has had the privilege of being a Program Assistant for numerous Level 1 trainings as well as a frequent PA for Frank Anderson's L2 Trauma and Neuroscience training. In addition to his therapy private practice he also works as a Guide for Onsite Workshops where he combines his passion for IFS with experiential techniques to create dynamic personal growth workshops. What if the magic in parenting doesn't happen in the moment you get it right, but in the moment you come back and repair? This week, I talk with educator, children's book author, and Self-led parent Anna Purpero, and I just loved this conversation so much. Anna has two little boys and a big heart, and she shares so honestly about what happens when our protectors take over in parenting and how IFS helped her find a new way forward. We talk about: What happens in our bodies when our kids fight (and why we feel like we're in danger) Why repair — not perfection — is the real magic The power of separating “who I am” from “what I do” in parenting and beyond How Anna uses playful language like “my volcano's bubbling up” to talk to her kids about parts Why naming a part doesn't mean avoiding responsibility...it helps kids (and grownups) take more Why real apologies only come after shame has lifted How her creative work flowed from her own healing Anna's book My Friends Inside is just beautiful. It's one of those books that speaks to kids and to the little ones inside us. The language is simple, the illustrations are gorgeous, and the heart behind it? So, so good. Anna recorded a special reading of her book just for our community and Jeff added page spreads to create a whole little experience out of it. You can find that for free exclusively on Substack. Come meet your parts and maybe a few new friends inside. About Anna: Anna Purpero is an educator and children's book author based in Columbus, OH, where she lives with her partner, Jordan, and their two sons (ages 4 and 6). Britt Frank escaped a cult, rebuilt her life after addiction, and is one of the most grounded, funny, and inspiring IFS speakers and educators around. In this week's episode, we talk about her new book Align Your Mind, and how parts work helped her move from chaos to clarity. We get into all of it...motivation, procrastination, inner critics, cults, menopause, and what alignment looks like beyond the buzzwords. Britt shares how she uses parts language in her own life, how she reframes procrastination as protection, and why your most extreme parts might actually be your best coaches. She also opens up about what it's like to come out of systems of control and begin to trust your own experience again. As Britt says, “Our parts don't want us to feel better. They want us to feel safe.” If you've ever felt stuck or like your parts are pulling you in opposite directions, this conversation is for you. In this episode, we talk about: What alignment really means (hint: it's not a vibe) How procrastination isn't laziness; it's a protective part trying to help Why “Self Energy is not codependency in a pretty dress” Reframing the inner critic as your best coach What it means to “coach your parts like a team” How parts work can reframe midlife and menopause as meaningful transitions Parts work as a way to “rewrite the script” with compassion and clarity Favorite Quote: “I want to talk to the parts of you that are doing weird things and say, ‘You're not crazy. In this week's episode I welcome three guests--Robin Barre, Ann-Katrin Bockmann, and Kasra Mirzaie--to talk about IFS and working with teenagers. We explore how IFS often skips over this phase of life, both in how we work with clients and how we relate to our own inner adolescent parts. We tend to romanticize childhood or focus on early wounding, yet there's a lot of cringing and avoiding when it comes to the teenage years. Adolescence is where so much transformation happens. It's where meaning gets made. It's when parts start to emerge with passion, intensity, and voice. My guests are each doing beautiful work in the world to support teens. Our teens (and teen parts) need room to grow, roll their eyes, slam doors, and ask big existential questions. This episode makes space for and sense of it all. We talk about normalizing rebellion, exploring identity, meaning making, and listening deeply to the parts of ourselves and our teens who are still figuring it all out. We also talk how IFS can overlook the developmental and cultural realities of adolescence. This conversation left me feeling full of insight and hope. Speaking of hope, be sure to check out my extended interview with this trio over on The One Inside on Substack, where they each share what is giving them hope right now.  In this episode, we explore: Why adolescence often gets skipped over in parts work What we miss when we pathologize normal adolescent development and behavior The meaning crisis and mental health crisis we are currently experiencing The difference between burdens and suffering that transforms Why validation is essential for connecting with teens How Self-Led parenting looks different during the teen years Questions to carry with you: What would it be like to revisit your inner teenager with curiosity? Which of your parts “woke up” during adolescence? What did you need then, and how might you offer it now? About my guests: Ann-Katrin Bockmann, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist and speech therapist, certified IFS and Somatic IFS therapist, IFS approved clinical consultant and Co Lead Trainer for the IFS Institute. She works at the Institute of Psychology at Hildesheim University (Germany) and in private practice. Today, we explore the intersection between IFS and the plural community--those living with DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) and OSDD (Other Specified Dissociative Disorders). What's the difference between DI parts and the IFS parts many of us talk about? How can we bridge misunderstandings between the IFS community and those living with more distinct parts?  This conversation was deeply moving and healing. I'm so grateful to both Dick and Ocean for their honesty, wisdom, and compassion. In this episode, we explore: The differences and overlap between DI parts and IFS parts Why the plural community has sometimes felt unseen and misunderstood by IFS The harm in labeling parts as managers, firefightes and exiles The complicated relationship many survivors have with Self Energy Strategies for working with systems shaped by deep trauma Why trust, patience, and honoring every part is a prerequisite to healing   Be sure to watch the extended video interview with Dick and Ocean over on our Substack.    Favorite Quotes: “IFS was never meant to pathologize people. On today's episode I meet Jessica Laurel Kane, a writer, illustrator, and storyteller whose new book, Once Upon an Upset: Illustrated Stories, Insights, and Reflections to Help Parent Our Children While Re-Parenting Ourselves, captures the spirit of Internal Family Systems in such an authentic and creative way.  Jessica isn't formally trained in IFS, but she lives it and teaches it through her stories, illusrations, and books. She discovered IFS organically during a slient retreat and got to know her inner world by interviewing her parts--like characters in a story.  Her work shows how imagination can be a healing tool. She makes “being with your parts” feel accessible, visual, and real. This episode is about the power of healing through storytelling, and I think you're going to love hearing Jessica tell hers.   Key Takeaways: “I treated myself the way I was treated.” Jessica describes how growing up with neglect led to internal self-neglect and how getting to know her parts shifted that pattern. How a 10-day silent retreat helped her meet the younger selves she'd been avoiding, and why she started interviewing them like characters in a story. “Only you get to say when you'll give birth to your creative self.” Jessica shares how parts of us often hold the key to our creativity and our stuckness. Parenting as a mirror: how Jessica hears old internal voices while parenting her son, and how she learned to pause, check in, and choose a different path. “The glue is compassion.” A conversation about looping thoughts, panic attacks, and what it takes to rewire old stories with new ones. How her late mother planted the seeds for the parts work and self trust Jessica now uses to nurture herself and her son. Favorite Quote: "Sometimes I search desperately outside of myself for a place to rest and be still, forgetting that this place is inside of me."—Jessica Laurel Kane About Jessica Jessica Laurel Kane is the author of several books, most recently: Leaving Cleveland: A Memoir, The Boy with the Heavy Suitcase (a picture book) and Once Upon an Upset: Illustrated Stories, Insights and Reflections to Help Parent Our Children While Reparenting Ourselves. On today's podcast, I chat with Dr. Irina Diyankova, certified IFS therapist, IFS clinical consultant, and Lead Trainer with the IFS Institute. We explore the fascinating intersection of IFS and neurodivergence, a topic she knows intimately from both her lived and professional experience. We talk about time blindness, sensory sensitivities, what gets mistaken for trauma but might be hardwiring, and how IFS therapists can differentiate. We also get into self-accommodation, the limits of coping skills, and why healing through IFS is a lifelong journey. I loved my conversation with Irina and felt uplifted and inspired by her beautiful Self Energy. I'm excited to bring this episode to you.  ✨ Don't miss my extended video interview with Irina on The One Inside Substack. You'll also find a gentle, creative meditation Irina led designed especially for neurodiverse folks to connect with parts of their nervous system. Bring crayons and curiosity.   Key Takeaways: “Healing doesn't always bring rainbows and butterflies.” Irina talks about the moment she realized her nervous system challenges weren't just about unhealed trauma. How do you tell the difference between parts and hardwiring? Irina walks us through how she listens for what's left after unburdening and what that might mean. “Coping skills that work for others might not work for you—and that's not a failure.” Why traditional therapeutic approaches (like exposure therapy) can be harmful for neurodivergent clients—and what to do instead. “I have to accommodate myself.” Irina shares how self-acceptance and sensory regulation opened up a whole new window of tolerance. We also talk about Irina's upcoming book, Becoming an IFS Therapist: A Journey to One's Self, which offers practices and reflections for IFS therapists.   Mentioned In This Episode: The Science of Calm free online summit April 21 - May 4, 2025 “Applying IFS with autistic and ADHD adults through neurodiversity affirming lens” two-day workshop, May 30-31, 2025. On today's podcast, I chat with Ashley Booth, a psychedelic-assisted psychotherapist, trainer, researcher—and former oceanographer! Ashley's new book, Quieting the Storm Within: A Simple, Intuitive Guide to Your Inner World, is beautifully written and illustrated, accessible, and deeply rooted in IFS. We talk about why she chose to create a picture book for adults, how parts mapping can be playful and powerful, and how IFS and psychedelics both point us toward connection with our parts, with the natural world, and with something larger than ourselves. Ashley shares her journey from marine science to healing work, the grief that led her there, and the awe and Self Energy that keep her grounded in the work today. Key Takeaways: “IFS is such a visual model.” Ashley talks about why she chose to make a picture book for adults and how dyslexia, digital art, and parts mapping all played a role. What is the “parts unstack” exercise and how can it help externalize what's happening inside? “All parts are either the steward of a need or trying to get that need met.” Ashley walks us through her reframing of protectors as helpers and the importance of naming needs with compassion. How her own psychedelic experiences influenced the metaphors in the book, and how IFS supports integration and meaning-making. “Self is the conduit.” Ashley shares how visual reminders, art, and little moments of awe can help us reconnect to Self Energy in everyday life. Favorite Quote: "We all need to be able to connect with the love and the compassion that's available to all of us that doesn't judge. And our parts need to be held by that, right? And our Self is the conduit for that to happen." – Ashley Booth About Ashley Booth Ashley Booth, LCSW, is a psychedelic-assisted psychotherapist, IFS practitioner, researcher, and educator. She's the author of Quieting the Storm Within: A Simple, Intuitive Guide to Your Inner World, releasing in March 2025. Ashley is also the founder of IFS and Beyond, where she offers consultation, integration, and teaching at the intersection of Internal Family Systems and psychedelic therapy. On today's podcast, I chat with Tanis Allen, a certified IFS therapist and longtime member of the IFS community. Tanis has been around since the earliest days of the model, and she just released a new book called The Self-Led IFS Workbook: Learn IFS Skills to Understand and Love All Your Parts published by Penguin Random House. We talk about her early experiences learning IFS in the ‘90s, her work with clients struggling with suicidality and eating disorders, and what it was like to write a book that makes the model accessible to everyone. Tanis shares insights on how to begin IFS on your own, the challenge of translating an oral and experiential tradition into clear written steps, and her favorite exercise for working with stuck parts. Key Takeaways: “Your awareness is the beginning of Self.” Tanis explains how simply noticing what's happening in your body or mind is the first step into the IFS process. How do you know you're in a part? Tanis breaks down how to begin this work, even if you're doing it on your own. “IFS is such a strong community… we sit in circles together and learn this together.” Tanis reflects on the power of shared learning and the influence of the “wise women” who helped shape the model. Why she added her own transcripts of parts work to the book, and what she discovered about herself through writing them. Her favorite exercise (the Four Drawing Exercise) and why it's so transformational for working with stuck parts. Favorite Quote: “Clients will often ask me, you know, does this make me like a multiple personality person or something? And, you know, the answer is no, we're all made this way, actually. And it does feel kind of weird sometimes. But the more we do it, the more we practice it, the less weird it feels." -- Tanis Allen About Tanis Allen Tanis Allen, LMSW, ACSW, is the author of The Self-Led Internal Family Systems Workbook: Learn to Use IFS Skills to Understand and Love All Your Parts. A member of the IFS community for over 25 years, Tanis has spent her career practicing, teaching, and living the IFS model. She serves as a mentor and IFS clinical consultant for other therapists and is the founder and director of the IFS Great Lakes Retreat, a beloved annual gathering held each fall in northern Michigan. On today's podcast, I chat with two brilliant IFS lead trainers, Pam Krause and Crystal Jones. We learn about their journeys to becoming IFS lead trainers, the evolution of the model's cultural awareness and inclusivity, and what it's been like to co-lead the newly updated IFS Online Circle together. We also dip our toes into a little controversy—should we skip the 6Fs? I loved hearing from them what it means to stay grounded in the core of the model while continuing to expand and evolve with care, community, and curiosity. Key Takeaways: “The core of the model has not changed at all.” Pam and Crystal reflect on how the IFS model has stayed steady while the perspectives, voices, and applications have continued to expand. How do different cultures experience Self Energy? What happens when we listen for joy, dance, chi, and loyalty as expressions of Self? How the model is evolving as more identities enter the space, adding richness and context. The 6 F's: should we still teach them? Pam and Crystal give context, clarity, and some new language around how and why the F's are helpful—especially for beginners. How the model teaches the steps to reach clients' protectors. We also explore mentoring, teaching, and the beautiful full-circle (pun intended!) relationship Pam and Crystal have developed through years of working together. Favorite Quote: “People are saying how they want to see themselves in the model, right? They want to see how it applies to them. And if we are not aware of our clients' identities, then we might miss it if we're looking for the eight C's.” – Crystal Jones
