[10x6] We take our first step into animation and Japanese film with 1985's Vampire Hunter D from director Toyoo Ashida, which adapts the famous novels by Hideyuki Kikuchi about a half-human/half-vampire ridding the world of the undead in a post-apocalyptic future where the Earth's been overrun with monsters and mutants... To help us, making his debut on the show is comic-book writer Jared Wayne Gifford... Hosts: Dan Owen & Hugh McStay Guest: Jared Wayne Gifford Editor: Dan Owen "I have lived in this world for 10,0000 years, and yet you lack the capacity to understand what that truly means. When years cease to have meaning, boredom is a mortal foe. It is a war for constant stimulation, and if that means debasing our line with humans, then so be it." -- Count Magnus Lee Subscribe and leave a rating or review to support the show. What is a “ReView” episode, you might ask? Well, it's my highly-clever (ok not really) name for episodes where I go back and revisit an older title I haven't seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that some time's gone by. It's Halloween season once again, so for this month's ReView episode, let's revisit a more unconventional pick for a Halloween movie night: the 1994 anime OVA adaptation of Hideyuki Kikuchi's Darkside Blues! Will this dystopian cybergoth thriller make for some great vibes, or is it just not "all that jazz"? Let's revisit it and find out! The screenplay is based on the first in the long-running series of light novels written by Hideyuki Kikuchi.Billed by the Japanese producers as a "dark future science-fiction romance", the film, like the novel before it, is set in the year 12,090 AD, in a post-nuclear holocaust world where a young woman hires a mysterious half-vampire, half-human vampire hunter to protect her from a powerful vampire lord. On this episode, Cat and Joe welcome back guest host Vance Tucker to talk about another wild classic anime movie by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, based on the works of fantasy horror author Hideyuki Kikuchi. Demon City Shinjuku, released in Japan in 1988 and later in the US in 1994, is set in a distant future where there's one president of the world, amazing technology, very vague magic force-like powers, a lot exposition and demons about to pour out of the center of Tokyo to take it all over. Cat, Vance and Joe have a lot of questions about this truly ridiculous, but very fun film.

In the early days of anime OVAs, a movie based on one of Hideyuki Kikuchi's novel series released, and 35 years later we watched it. Both anime and OVAs have changed a lot since then - how does this early production, which pushed the violence and sexuality farther than it could if it were made to air on television, hold up in the year 2020? Also, since we're in the midst of our Halloween Spookaloo, how spooky is this thing? And finally, has an ending song ever slapped as hard as the one in this movie? Probably not. For the answers to the other questions, you'll have to give the episode a listen! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/howsitholdup/support

Who knew that when we surveyed our fans they would be so passionate about anime? We had no idea we would ever do an anime movie review and yet, in this episode we review two! The films are Vampire Hunter D and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. The films are based on a lonstanding series of Japanese novels written by Hideyuki Kikuchi and illustrated by Yoshitaka Amano. The first film was released in 1985 and directed by Toyoo Ashida. The second film, released in 2000, was directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri. The English dub on the films features some renowned voice actor, including most notably, John DiMaggio (Chowder, Futurama, Adventure Time). Both films center around a half-vampire, half-human hybrid, known only as D. This cloaked stranger has an odd, wisecracking face in his palm, which has all sorts of unexplained powers and is referred to either as a parasite or a symbiote. In the 1985 feature, he is avenging a young woman who was bitten by a powerful vampire noble. In the 2000 feature, our hero is tracking a vampire who has seemingly kidnapped a beautiful woman, only to find that blah blah something about love. This week's "Hidden Track" is by GORE. Their song Ashtray / Libido can be found here: https://borehardcore.bandcamp.com/album/bore. The band has a thriving instagram and facebook account, which you should probably like. In honor of this most wonderful time of the year (it's still Halloween somewhere, right?), the Hate Expectations team sinks its teeth into the anime classic, Vampire Hunter D. We drank in the English translation (2005) of the Hideyuki Kikuchi novel (1983), were hypnotized into a restless trance by the animated movie adaptation (dir. Toyoo Ashida, 1985), and finally fought through the whole rambling mess to hunt for a living pulse somewhere in it. We weren't entirely successful. It turns out that vampires aren't the only thing that suck with this title. Certainly, it's not all noxious fumes and ghastly ichor (spoiler: Lizzy liked the book). And even where it is, we do our best to make sense of it. Garlic lemonade, anyone?
Sully returns after many weeks to sit down with Austin and chat about the 1985 film, Vampire Hunter D! Directed by Toyoo Ashida, based on the light novel series by Hideyuki Kikuchi! DM and Vinnie really have a mostly themeless episodes. We talk about Darkside Blues, Ninja Scroll, and Fatal Fury the Movie.
So in our first personal pick, Vinnie went with 1987's Wicked City. Also Vinnie will be presenting a bunch in the next few weeks. At CloverCon in Bridgewater (May 19), NJ he will be presenting Must See Anime Openings at 11AM in the Green Room.At Anime Boston (May 24-26), he will be presenting Ponies! at 7PM on Friday, Science in Anime at 8PM on Saturday, and What is Anime? at 1:30 on Sunday.
I was at Border's tonight and picked up Zoo by Otsuichi. Now the only Haikasoru title I haven't bought is Usurper of the Sun. I haven't read any of the titles yet, but when I do, I'll be doing podcast reviews for sure. I knew about the Haikasoru books, but the real surprise tonight was finding a copy of Wicked City: Black Guard, a novel by Hideyuki Kikuchi, in the manga section. Kikuchi, of course is the author of the best-selling Vampire Hunter D series. It's being published by Seven Seas and goes for the nice price of $9.99. I didn't even know it was coming out. I'm walking into the franchise naked, having never seen the anime or the live action movie. But I like that. I'd rather read the novel first instead of seeing the usual crappy Japanese special effects in the live action version, or old school anime style. I'd much rather use my imagination to see Kikuchi's world.
